Is there any way to make the chat refresh faster?

For instance, it takes almost 10 seconds between someone posting before it actually posts so someone else can see it. Is there a way to make it almost instant like with MSN's chat? Or won't it work like that?

You don't want it to load faster, unless you like resources being sucked up :p

What type of impact would it have if the time was decreased to 1 second?

The default refresh rate is 8 seconds, putting it to 1 would multiply resource usage by 8. So if you want to kill your site feel free, otherwise i wouldn't change the settings.
