You know by either feedback from the thread, or after you install it yourself.

Supported means the author has agreeded to help when they can;

Beta modifications should work as the author is supposed to test them before they are posted, in some cases that dos'nt happen tho.

If you are un-sure you should scan the thread and see if others are having problems. If that dos'nt help install it on a test board and see if you think it will work on your live install.
