Just start modifing code or createing hacks on a trial bases.

Thats probley one of the cheapest ways to learn and how many have learned ;)

Write your own code. You'll be hopelessly confused by vB's code if you're just starting out. Get a PHP book--not websites--and take their examples and modify them. Don't do anything complex, and a hack that relies on vB2's or vB3's framework is complex, regardless of how they appear.
