guess what i broke today?

hi all...

was making a change to the functions.php, broke the board, uploaded the original functions.php from the backup and now am getting this header error:functions.php9^??̺??mBIN???
Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/elena/public_html/board/admin/functions.php:2) in /home/elena/public_html/board/showthread.php on line 116egads...does anyone have any idea what this could be caused by? i changed a single line of text and then overwrote it back with the original so i cannot imagine what i did wrong...

It says showthread.php, so upload an unhacked copy of that.

Are you uploading in Binary and not ASCII?

sorry...you are talking to a moron...if i knew the difference between binary and ascii, i probably would not have broke it to begin with...hahaha...sorry...

i am uploading the file from my desktop through the host server upload option, overwriting the extant file in the board folder...this is what i have always done and it has always worked fine...for some reason today it has decided to be persnickity...

is there another way that might help fix this? sorry to be such a dunce...

seems as when you were altering it there is code messed up. and i take it you dont have a backup of it so try undoing what you did

well i tried "undoing" it first and that did not work, so i restored it from the backup and it still refuses to fix, so i have no idea...

this is 2.2.9 so can i re-download it on the chance my backup is corrupted?

this is completely perplexing and because of this error, i cannot access the admin panel...

just for the fun of it, i tried a completely fresh install of the 2.3.0 board. guess what...the error is still there...

does anyone know of anything finky in the database that might cause this? a conflict on th host server end? i opened a ticket there as well...

Try turning off gzip compression.

i cannot turn off the gzip because i cannot access the admin panel as a result of the error...any ideas how to turn off the gzip any other way?

the error also occurs on the 2.3.0. install even though the gzip is off...

okay...fixed this mess by looking for other errors under "header errors"....thank you all...

now if i can figure out how to finish the upgrade to 2.3.0...
