HOW GOOD DOES THIS HACK WORK??? >>> Over 29,000 pages spidered since January 1st!!!!!!! Visit http://www3.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=Archive+SkuZZy+Xenon to see all the pages this script has helped get spidered into google!
Sub-Forums have been added!
Final Version Released - February 10th
I added sub-forums in this final version, one of the most requested features to be added... but, sad to say... this will be the final version. I never got a chance to add some of the cool features I said, but I feel this archive has served it's purpose and hopefully will continue to do so for all the die hard users who stick with vb 2.2.9. I decided to make this the final version because vb3 is coming out soon and I think this archive is the best archive currently out. Sure, there are more flashy ones, but this one gets the job done and gets results. Hopefully this hack will live on for a while.
Edit by Xenon: Whenever there is a problem, i'll take a look at it, and perhaps add a feature or two :)
About this hack
This hack will help get all your threads listed in google and other search engines and get your threads easily spidered! It works by creating an archive and turning all your posts into .html format. It doesn't actually create the .html files though, but google thinks they are real! It uses mod_Rewrite. If you don't have mod_Rewrite, you can't use the scripts (sorry).
What does it do?
The purpose of this hack are to get your keywords from your forums listed in google and get people visiting them! Since these are all pure text and don't use tables or excess font tags, they are very friendly on bandwidth! This will display all your files in a nice text format that google will absolutely love! Visit the online demo below to see it in action!

Requirements
Apache
vBulletin 2.x
mod_mime installed
.htaccess
5 minutes of your time...
Known Problems/Confusion
Mod_mime - You will NEED mod_mime to run these scripts. Mod_mime is a free module which enables a directive called "ForceType". This allows you to use the .htaccess file included to force your files into php mode, which allows simple URL's, without .php in them. If you can see the front page of your archive, but get an error page when you click on any links then this is your problem. To fix it, you will need to install mod_mime, or ask your host to do it. It's a FREE module. For more information, visit http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_mime.html
Private forums - Private forums are NOT shown and they will NOT be spidered. Some people say the private forums show up, that is because you are logged in as the admin and the archive uses permissions. So anyone who has permission to view the private forums on your forums, will beable to view them on the archives also. But if you log out of your account OR log into an account that doesn't have access to them, then you won't beable to view them :)
Credits
Biggest credit goes to Xenon who originally coded the scripts. He is the man! Also thanks to everyone who tested it out for me and kept bugging me about releasing it (when I was too lazy to).
Agreement
By using these scripts & installing them, you agree to leave the small (virtually unnoticable) copyright text and links at the bottom of all pages. You also agree to leave jelsoft's copyright there as well. You can modify the scripts much as you want, but this portion must remain intact (links must stay) and visible. This is all we ask :D
Download Final
To install, just download the file below and open the "_readme.txt" file. All is explained there. Installation should only take a couple of minutes. If you have problems with this script, post them in this thread and I will try and get around to answering them.

What would be the best solution for people who do not have mod_rewriting capabilities, like ensim users, and other users.
I know some people here do not have the luxury of mod_rewriting :p like me and Chris, and I think Teck too.
I have done something similar, but I am not satisified by the method I used, I am looking for a more organized way. I am open to your or anyone elses suggestions.
http://www.noxmedia.net/archive
(I have done massive editing to achieve the effect, and I added some extra stuff to mimic vB3 archive, but I am willing to give this ALL UP, for something that will do the same thing as mod rewrite)
I personally detest ensim, but I am stuck on it for awhile, and ensim does not allow mod_rewriting, there are always errors, like forbidden, and internal server errors. I either have to bug my host to add it, and even then its a pain.
Great job, and please suggest sume stuff :)

I will probably release a version that doesn't require mod_rewrite. I wouldn't beable to add the .html extensions to the pages though. However, it would be possible to remove the .php from the file names without using mod_rewrite (using .htaccess instead). So the URL's would look like http://www.battleforums.com/archive/topic/400 instead of http://www.battleforums.com/archive/topic/400.html ... not alot of difference, but google DOES like .html better I think. They suspicious when a site has thousands of different directories ;)

most hosts nowadays will load up any module/plugin/etc.. that you want, not all do, but the majority will do it at the request of the customer. unless you're on some $2.95 plan then they might not. If you pay good money for hosting then either make them do it or threaten that you will get a host that will :)
ask and see, if they say no then get a host that will. my host will install a virus if i tell them to, ;)

The way I have done it is, through htaccess, and htaccess only, and I was able to also acheive the .html effect, maybe if you are going to release one that uses a different method (and i think I know which) maybe we can work together to do that part.

Doesn't google already crawl query files unless you send it into a loop?
I can't get it to work :(
It just brings up a blank page. <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">

I'll be releasing a version TODAY that doesn't require mod_rewrite and will have all the same features. It will be version 2.0! ;)
It does however require .htaccess. But....... good news. Tommorow, I will be releasing a version that doesn't require mod_rewrite OR .htaccess ;)
The downside to that version will be that URL.s will look like http://www.whatever.com/archive/topic.php/400.html instead of just "topic/400.html". But it still works ;)

If you are using fastforwards hack (spider friendly URL's) and you want the links in this hack to display the friendly URL's in the topic views:
In the topic file around line 58 change:
showthread.php?s=&threadid=$thread[threadid]
to
t$thread[threadid].html

I don't get why it's working for some people and not for others. For some of you, it might just be that your path is wrong. So here is how to find out your absolute path (the easiest way I know). Just download this file (path.php) and [/b]upload it to the same directory as your global.php file[/b].
Now, open up path.php in your browser and it will look like this at http://www.battleforums.com/path.php
Parse error: parse error in /home/hsphere/local/home/battle/battleforums.com/path.php on line 5
Now, just copy the path and replace "path.php" with "global.php" and put that in the config.php file for the scripts. So my path would be:
/home/hsphere/local/home/battle/battleforums.com/global.php
... it's pretty simple.

Just installed this, and it works great! However, it's including private forums and the threads therein, and I'd prefer they not be archived. Is there any way to prevent this?
Also, how is it possible to have the archive pages display the standard site header and footer?

For those of you having chdir() problems, the only code you should need inside the chdir() is the following:
chdir("../forums");
require("global.php");
Given that your config.php is located in your public_html folder in a new directory (as the instructions say), but above your forums directory.
If you have the new directory located inside your forums directory, use this:
chdir("../");
require("global.php");

Heh, do as NTLDR said above also, removing chdir(".."); in topic and forum, since both files are located in the same directory anyway where config.php exists (meaning there shouldn't be a reason to switch directories). This will give you a blank page if not fixed..

Private forums are only shown to people who have access to view them. Try logging out of your account on the forums and then see if the private forums show up. The archive uses the same permissions system as your forums. As far as your header/footers, there isn't really a simple 1 click way to do your headers/footers the same as your forums. Just go to your forums source and copy the header/footer directory from the source of your forums. But I wouldn't make the archive too intensive. Part of the good thing about the archive is, it takes not alot of bandwidth. If you add images and alot of hits come in from google, then your bandwidth will go way up!

I released a 2.1 that fixes this small problems. The chdir is unneeded, as long as all files are put into the same directory. For those having the blank pages problem, download the newest version (2.1) updated in thread

Google will spider the archive page, but NOT the private forums. They will get an error saying they don't have access. As far as them spidering the original thread, there is no way to get them to spider the original thread unless you use a hack like fastforward's hack of filburt's hack, but they can be a bit messy. This one is good, because there is a link provided at the top of all pages "Click here to view the original thread" and people can click on it.

Messy is fine so long as it successfully spiders the original thread.

Yes, but experience has taught me that people online are inherently lazy, and 9 times out of 10 won't click the link. Is there any way for the archive hack to at least display any html code in the threads its archiving so that images will show up (in their correct places in the thread) as it's a security concern for me to have URLs displayed as text instead of as the links they're meant to be.

Submit the archive link http://www.macfora.com/forums/archive to google and then add a link to your archive from your main page or forums page. This will help your pages get a better PR given to them and thus help your archive pages rank higher in google! It will also help them get spidered faster

Just wanted to give a heads up to everyone. I'd recommend anyone planning on installing this hack does it immediately and puts a link to the archive on their main page (or a page that is frequently spidered by google) because... the google dance will be happening in the next 1-3 days. The "google dance" is when google updates all the links and adds new pages. So bottom line, if you get your archive up before the dance, then your archive pages will be in google NEXT dance (only 1 month) but if you miss this dance, then your archive pages might not be in google for 2 months.

Yeah, having .php in the URL affects how it's spidered I think. Once vb3 is released, i'll just use mod_rewrite to take the .php out of the vb3 archive, then I will strip the archive down and remove all the pointless javascript junk. Why waste bandwidth on an archive? ???

This is a great hack, Thanks for it i now have it working. I had to to put chdir() bit in the config file instead of the full path.

I just made a few changes.
I removed chdir(..) from topic and forum.
And I replaced the first line in the configuration file with these:
chdir("../vb");
require("global.php");
chdir("../history");
Nice script by the way, too bad I missed google by a day :(

I'm getting closer but still have a couple of problems. I get the following where the header and footer ought to go:
Warning: Failed opening 'http://64.224.111.213/forums/archive/header.php' for inclusion (include_path='.;c:\php4\pear') in D:\64.224.111.213\forums\archive\index.php on line 99
Also, the links to my forums don't work. I get a 404 error.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'd really like to get this hack working. Its a great idea!

You can't use URL's as paths, they must be the path to the file on the server, eg /home/site/public_html or C:/Apache/htdocs

Is there any way to get the hack to penetrate deeper into the forums? I have a ton of forums that are categorized and unless I want to subject the user to a mile long forum home page by specifying a depth of 2, the archive does not supply much as when the links are hit, I get no data.
Here is my site as an example: The 4 stroke forum is many levels deep....

Couple of things, as I'm new here, ... but first: great hack! Thank you!
I received an identical error as freeshares1 did (the global.php unable to access the admin/config.php file) and solved it the same way by changing the full server UNC path to:
chdir("../forums");
require("global.php");
Second item... and I don't know if this was something peculiar to just my server or not, but the archives were displaying uber slow. I tried changing the 'include' command for the header/footer lines from:
include "$archiveurl/footer.php";
to:
readfile("http://www.yoursite.com/archives/header.txt");
(notice that i renamed the actual header.php file to header.txt). And, all of a sudden the whole archives site display became lightning quick! Not sure what that was about, but I wasn't familiar with the include command and I was with the readfile command which allowed web URLs, which is why I tried it. Again, not sure if the massive difference in speed was unique to my site or not.
Third item is that I'd like the order of threads displayed sticky first followed by most recent and ending with the oldest thread instead of the other way around... Is this what I change in the forum file:
$getthreadids=$DB_site->query("
SELECT
thread.threadid,thread.title
FROM thread
WHERE thread.forumid = $forumid
AND thread.visible=1
ORDER BY sticky DESC, lastpost
");
?? Do I change the 'DESC' to 'ASC' or something? Or, is it more complicated than that?
The last question/issue I have is with the main index.php display of the forums table. The individual forums (forums that contain threads) link properly and perfectly. However, the forum Groups (the non-indented titles that have indented forums beneath them) link to a blank page containing only part of my header/footer and no data. Everything else links/works great. Is there any way to fix this or better yet have only Group titles be plain text instead of hyperlinked?
Thanks, SkuZZy!!

For the last item, I had to change the manner that my forums were displayed on the page and make a modification to the index.php file. My forum depth is set to one, but I have many subforums. I used to use a category-->Category-->forum format, but got blank paged like you. Now, I have a Forum-->Category-->Forums Hierarch where the catogories and the forums are subbed to only the top fourm. Here is an example:
Old Format:
4 Stoke Forum--> Used to be a category
Yamaha--Category
YZ426 Actual Forum.
In its original form, only the 4 stroke forum was listed and resulted in blank pages when clicked.
Here is the new format:
4 Stroke Forum-->Acts as a Forum
Yamaha--->Category
YZ 426--Acts as a forum. Note that this is NOT a sub of Yamaha any longer
Coupled with the following change to the index.php file, I have complete indexing of the site!
if ($depth<$forumhomedepth+1) {
echo "<ul>";
makeforumbit($forum['forumid'],$depth+3,$forumperms);
echo "</ul>";
Good Luck

The following link works: http://www.rcgroups.com/archive/forum.php/17.html
But this does not: http://www.rcgroups.com/archive/forum/17.html
So I think there must be some setting that governs what kinds of files are processed by the php engine. Can anyone help me with this?

It's an .htaccess problem.
Did you upload the included .htaccess file to the directory? That is what forces the "forum" file into php mode. If you're running apache, should be no problems. If you have uploaded the .htaccess file and it's still not working, then try uploading the .htaccess file into your root directory (lowest directory you can go to) being careful not to overwrite any existing .htaccess file. You may just want to append it to the exisiting one.

Hmmm...it's probably something simple, but I'm stumped.
The .htaccess file is in the proper place. I've played with the permissions and ownership of the file but haven't had any luck.

Ok, I figured it out.
The issue is that the directory has to have "AllowOverride" set for the archive directory. This needs to be done within the httpd.conf file.
Some people here are probably using virtual hosts and they tend to set up their servers so that users can override options in any directory. Apparently the default apache installation doesn't do this.
A couple of links I found helpful while researching this:

I'm using w2k & IIS. My archives show top level only, but when clicking on one of the links, I get a 404 file not found error, which I would assume has to do with the files with no extensions not executing as php (limitation due to .htaccess not working).

Perhaps too much javascript or something. Google didnt spider vbulletin.com's archive either, been 2 months now. So that says something :/ *cough* vb3s new archive is useless. If you copied their code, then maybe that's the reason why google isn't spidering your site too

It WILL eventually. Google doesn't deep spider until certain parts of the month. Just wait. Google usually deep spiders 5 days after the dance and it started on the 1st. So that says it all ;)

In my reading, I thought that matching your link color to the background was taboo and could result in them not indexing you if caught?? I kept it visible for that reason.

Google will ban you if you use invisible text or links. This means using text that is, in theory, "invisible". Just add a normal link to the archive. If you try and make it the same color as your background, you'll get banned

Yet a 4th day now of getting crawled! 50 Guests on our boards and they are all Google. (http://www.thrillnetwork.com/boards/online.php)
I submitted our main site, the archive and also have links to the archive in our main footers and in our main navigation off of the index page. I think this is why it worked.
A few questions:
When does Google add the crawl to their index?
How do I add a black border around the main table? I want the archive to match our site.
Thanks!

Nice job! It's good to submit your archive and add a link to it.
Google will add pages at the end of the month. The main spidering happens 5 days after the dance. The dance is when google updates all links and adds newly spidered pages. The dance this month was January 1st. So spidering happens between the 5th and 10th. All the pages spidered between the 5th and 10th will be added on the next dance, which will happen at the end of January or maybe very early febuary. So to answer your question, in about 3 weeks a ++++ load of your pages will be spidered.
On this note, i'd like to add one more thing. Not all your pages will be added to google at once. They only add a certain percentage per month to prevent spamming. I think it's like 2000 pages per month available to be added. (Each thread counts as 1 page). So about 2000 of your threads will get put in google the first month. Be patient though, the next month will get even more added!

If you really need to use a color similiar, then use one that is very light. For instance, use #111111 on a #000000 background and it will be hardly noticable. But don't make it like #000000 and #000001 .... cause even though google can't tell, if someone reports it to google you will get banned. It's up to you and the chances you want to take ;)

Thanks, I've changed it to the same colour as my footer text, while were on this kin d of subject, I modified the archive so that if it dedects MSIE or Mozilla in the User Agent then it redirects to the actual page (eg showthread.php?threadid=X), would you suggest that I remove that code? I'm not sure if google would look down on that too, I'm guessing they would.

mind sharing the code changes
I changed a line in topic from this
echo "<html><body><head><title>[$thread[title]] - $title</title></head><base href=\"$forumurl/\">";
to this
echo "<html><body><head><title>[$thread[title]] - $title</title>
<script>
var browser_type=navigator.appName
if (browser_type==\"Netscape\"||browser_type==\"Microsoft Internet Explorer\") {
window.location.replace(\"$forumurl/showthread.php?s=&threadid=$thread[threadid]\")

Google has been on my site browsing through the archive with no problems, its just the issue of wether or not they allow it. Heres the changes I made:
index.php right after you have required config.php add:
// check the browser and redirect if needed
if (eregi("MSIE",$HTTP_USER_AGENT)) { // browser is IE
header("Location: $forumurl");
} elseif (eregi("Mozilla/5.0",$HTTP_USER_AGENT)) { // browser is NS 6
header("Location: $forumurl");
} elseif (eregi("Mozilla/4.",$HTTP_USER_AGENT)) { // browser is NS4
header("Location: $forumurl");
}
topic again add after requiring config.php:
// check the browser and redirect if needed
if (eregi("MSIE",$HTTP_USER_AGENT)) { // browser is IE
header("Location: $forumurl/showthread.php?threadid=$threadid");
} elseif (eregi("Mozilla/5.0",$HTTP_USER_AGENT)) { // browser is NS 6
header("Location: $forumurl/showthread.php?threadid=$threadid");
} elseif (eregi("Mozilla/4.",$HTTP_USER_AGENT)) { // browser is NS4
header("Location: $forumurl/showthread.php?threadid=$threadid");
}
And forum (as above for code placement):
// check the browser and redirect if needed
if (eregi("MSIE",$HTTP_USER_AGENT)) { // browser is IE
header("Location: $forumurl/forumdisplay.php?forumid=$forumid");
} elseif (eregi("Mozilla/5.0",$HTTP_USER_AGENT)) { // browser is NS 6
header("Location: $forumurl/forumdisplay.php?forumid=$forumid");
} elseif (eregi("Mozilla/4.",$HTTP_USER_AGENT)) { // browser is NS4
header("Location: $forumurl/forumdisplay.php?forumid=$forumid");
}

Quality Guidelines - Specific recommendations:
Avoid hidden text or hidden links.
Don't employ cloaking or sneaky redirects.
Don't send automated queries to Google.
Don't load pages with irrelevant words.
Don't create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content.
Avoid "doorway" pages created just for search engines, or other "cookie cutter" approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content

I just started a few days ago with this new pop up program called http://popupsponsor.cjb.net. I just wanted to let you guys know, there is an easy way to make money using this archive. Not only is it good for getting more traffic to your forums, but making money with it too? :D Since all the traffic coming in is from search engines, most of it is unique and this pop up company pays $5.00 per 1000 unique visitors. Also, putting pop-up windows on your archive won't affect your actual forum. I said i'd never put pop ups on my forums, cause my loyal members shouldn't have to deal with them... so I put them on the archive instead. Right nowi 'm making like $10-15 a day. From everyone i've heard, they pay on time. They are pretty reputable.
You can sign up at http://popupsponsor.cjb.net (forwards straight to signup form)

Like NTLDR mentioned, it takes google a few weeks to update all pages. No pages should even be in google as of now and they will be gone with the next few days (what you're seeing is called everflux). At the end of the month however, there should be alot ;)

I'd like to address all the people reporting problems. It's obvious these scripts have certain problems with various server configurations. Thrillnetwork proves this even further, when after upgrading to Redhat 8.0, their archive won't work now. I really don't know what to say. I am trying to figure out what the problem is and i've even asked more l33t programmers and no one seems to know. So I guess, bottom line is, if you can get this hack to work for you (which it seems like most people can) then congrats. If not, please, keep posting your errors here and I AM working on fixing it, but for now i'd suggest looking over some of the tips already posted in this thread about things needed in httpd.conf - Also, if your archive isn't working, try changing the two file names (topic / forum) to "topic.php" and "forum.php" then see if the url will work like that (IE: http://www.blah.com/forum.php/100.html) .... if it works after you rename them to PHP, then that means it IS a .htaccess error. Make sure your server supports the .htaccess you're trying to use. I'm not a pro on this command, but it's ForceType application/x-httpd-php ... so obviously the httpd.conf file is required and perhaps some hosts have it disabled. I have a feeling this is the problem many are suffering from. I will look into it more.
SkuZZy
01-11-2003, 08:03 AM
Ok ladies and gentlemen. I've figured out what the problem is (now wasn't that quick?). If you are one of the people who have installed the hack and can see the front page of your archive, but the links don't work... here is the fix. You are missing a required directive from a module called "mod_mime". To fix this, ask your web host to install mod_mime (http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_mime.html). It includes the directive called ForceType (http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_mime.html#forcetype) which is used in the .htaccess file included with this script to flatten your URL's and take the .php out of them. Without mod_mime installed, the script basically won't work as described. For more information about Mod_mime, visit http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_mime.html

Yes it can. This is posted on my site:
GOOGLE FACTS
1. Google uses a crawler named Googlebot which crawls the web approximately every thirty days.
2. It is not necessary to submit any page to Google. If you do submit, submit only your most important page to this search engine.
3. Googlebot is a deep crawler and should crawl all of your pages.
4. Google supplies ranking results for placement in Netscape Search, the ODP, Anzwers, Yahoo! and Ilor.
5. Google can crawl pages in ASP, JSP, CFM, PHP, Excel, Microsoft Word, newsgroups, PDF and PostScript files, Power Point and Rich Text formats.
6. Google loves sites with a high number of legitimate, relevant incoming links.

Believe it or not, google isn't perfect. Yes, most of what they say is true, but still limited. Tbhey say they can spider PHP, so why don't they spider vbulletin then? Or thousands of other PHP scripts? Because google doesn't like the URL's that some of them use, they are too complex or google doesn't like the session hash, or many other reasons. Same thing goes with javascript. Google understands a VERY LIMITED amount of javascript. Google would be stupid to spider javascript, as it can cause so many problems and also manipulate googlebot into a loop. This is why websites put text links inside javascript when they don't want them to count as a link in google, cause they know google won't touch javascript. It's standard practice.

Please make 2 files: test.php and test.js
Include some code to display a readable text in each file, submit them to Google then let me know if they are indexed.
Google indexes all files that have an text readable output ONLY, as mentioned onto my GOOGLE FACTS, few posts above.
Before I made my own Archive system (http://www.teckwizards.com/archives.php) (almost identical to VB3 one), I did a research on several search engines, in order to optimize my code properly and avoid any Cloacking techniques.

I said above that google will spider some javascript. If you make a .js file with plain text or whatever then maybe google will spider it. But i'm talking about javascript embedded within' .html or .php files. For instance, for the popups to work, you put:
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JAVASCRIPT" SRC="http://view.popupsponsor.com/media/lx.js?a_id=10729&creative_type=1"></SCRIPT>
in your <head> tags. Google will NOT read this when it views the html page. It will see the javascript but it will ignore anything in between the <script> tags. In other words, it won't open the url http://view.popupsponsor.com/media/lx.js?a_id=10729&creative_type=1 ... therefore, putting popup windows won't effect google's spiderings, which was the original point. I'm sure google might spider some javascript or .js files, but not the types I use.
Ahaaaa, I got your point now. :D
You are totally right about those URL's. But that's not the case for vBulletin, right? If I understood correctly he was referring to the pm popup...
I might be wrong, but about those URL's listed above, you definitely don't want them, as you said. :)

will run correctly.
Here are our current server configs:
PHP Version 4.2.2
Red Hat Linux 8.0
Apache Version Apache 1.3.27
Loaded Modules: mod_php4, mod_setenvif, mod_so, mod_auth, mod_access, mod_rewrite, mod_alias, mod_userdir, mod_actions, mod_imap, mod_asis, mod_cgi, mod_dir, mod_autoindex, mod_include, mod_status, mod_negotiation, mod_mime, mod_log_config, mod_env, http_core
I hope this might help you try to figure out a more universal script. Since we've been very successful with it so far.

Like NTLDR mentioned, it takes google a few weeks to update all pages. No pages should even be in google as of now and they will be gone with the next few days (what you're seeing is called everflux). At the end of the month however, there should be alot ;)

I do like the way Teck's hack looks like the boards but really this archive is for the search engines and not the GP. right? So do looks matter? What I do like about Teck's is his latest suggestion modifing the meta tags to include keywords from the threads.

Question for anybody:
What system do you recommend I get for accurate traffic stats? I have a server with several sites but really only care about monitoring about 3 major domains. Secondly, when these folks say they can actually see the crawl from Google and Inktomi, are they just watching hits or what do they (you ) use to watch this?

for simple stats to see if google is crawling is look at /online.php :) if you are loged in to see the ips you can see which engines are on the site.

Well i finally have this KIND OF working (it did not work with the correct full path given, but then did work when i used the above trick of putting the change dir line above it....which is pretty weird).
However, now there is still a problem. It shows top level forums just fine, but my forums are listed on the main page by categories, which show the subforums for that area after you enter the category. Here, when entering a category, it shows only the footer....no body at all.
So it is apparently TRYING to do something with it...but the code here doesn't seem to have taken categories into consideration.

v2.3 has been released. The new version fixes the chdir problems that many were having. If you were stumped with the "blank page error", please download the latest 2.3 version. It fixes that problem. I am working on v3.0 and hopefully it will be done. New version will feature sub-forums displayed, as well as multiple pages (for large forums and threads).

Well, I think that the following page says it all! Ranked number 2 right out of the gate! When is the next Dance or major indexing/crawl?
SkuZZy
01-20-2003, 10:39 PM
The dance is usually at the end of the month, often between the 25th and 30th and the "major crawl" happens 5 days after the dance BEGINS (approximately). So if the dance started on January 28th, the major crawl would probaly begin around the 3rd.
SkuZZy
01-20-2003, 10:39 PM
Oh and just for refference, the dance is when google updates all their listings from their LAST major crawl. Those of you who installed my hack before the last "big crawl" should notice all your pages in google when the dance is done with.

HELP
So i got .htaccess issues.
What do I do about it?
I should go to the httpd conf file and change what exactly?
mod_mime and mod_rewrite are installed
with these commands:
LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so
AddModule mod_rewrite.c
duplicate for mod_mime
mod_mime_magic is disabled... Don't know could that be a problem?
#AddModule mod_mime_magic.c
I have my own server but I'm not totally familiar with it.
Can anybody step by step me through that?
Red Hat 6.1 running Apache.
Can someone show exactly what they changed to get it to work when they had .htaccess problems?
would leaving links like this:
forums.com/forum/archive/forum.php/7.html
hurt my chances with the googlebot?
Would someone uploading a working conf file for comparison be
against apache's rules?

Coasters: http://www.thrillnetwork.com/index....unc=allcoasters
Amusement parks: http://www.thrillnetwork.com/index....e&func=allparks
We have over 1700 Roller Coasters listed in our DB and over 500 amusement parks. Listing all sorts of information, histories and stats. It's been very frustrating that non of these pages are being indexed. At all. :( Please help.

I had this running on Apache/1.3.26 fine before, I've now switched to a dedicated server with Apache2, the archive wouldn't work at all, I allways got Error 404 for forums and topics, and I couldn't seem to protect directories either.
So I've removed Apache2 and installed Apache/1.3.27 and now I get No forum/thread specified. Again mod_mime is installed and everything else seems to work well.

Hey scuzzy.... Great hack! If you do a update tho, I suggest (a) changing to this
chdir("../");
require("global.php");
And (b)modifying it so it will display categories in multi-teir layouts, like mine and a few others here (DON"T YELL AT ME, I KNOW HOW I CAN DO IT ONE WAY, but i have co-admins who don't always pay that much attention)
Thanks :D

In showthread and forumdisplay change:

What you saw was everflux. Your site was never actually in good, they just spidered you and you showed up in their search for a week or so, then disappeared. It happens to all new sites being added. Wait until the end of the month (about one week or less) and all your pages should be added when the "google dance" happens. That is when good updates all their links and adds new pages they indexed throughout the month. It definately was not the archive that did this ;)
