I would love to have the archive working as for months:

August
September
October ...

Like a diary, get the point? Will somebody write it, I can't do it myself!!

anybody who can code and has time and want to do can write that for you.
you have to find a coder yourself

i get 404 errors and mod_rewrite and mod_mime are enabled in apache.

any clue on why ?

Xenon

hmm, no idea, if you followed the instructions exactly it should work ..

zajako
06-09-2003, 04:58 AM
i did follow the directions exactly.

Could it be a misconfguration of apache?

I run the server, and im still kinda new to apache, so it may be my error, but i did remove the comments on the module calling lines for apaches mod_rewrite and mod_mime .

it only does them on the forum and topic files.

What is the offending lines of code? Other than your errors, the archive appears to be working fine. Could these be errors from included php code? Post the lines that created the errors as they may shed more light.

cnczone
06-17-2003, 03:04 AM
The errors are different lines, their not the same ones. The hack has been working perfect for awhile than all of a sudden I get these warnings. Could my host have changed somthing on the servers or did I change a read write on a file?

Xenon
06-17-2003, 07:36 AM
hmm i don't know but i remember i got some errors on a special host where an old site of me was located, which occured in a warning if gzip was enabled.

so have you tried to use a complete unmodificated version of our hack?
if yes and the error occurs, it's most likely a hostissu

A few things I'd like to see added to this, or to the instructions anyway.
1) A few small details on how to make the archive look similar to your forums. I see many have done this. None have spoken up to help others. ie: header and footer
(I'm still tweaking mine so I can't comment on the best way to do this)

2) your on your archive main page ok, you click a forum. I want to center the "Pages: XXXXX" link. I can center Pages:1 ok, but 2345678 whatever, go back to the left side. I think across the top center for page links would be better. ;)

3) Your on a page of threads, or thread itself, it would be great to have a few more links up top, like, "Archive Home" or whatever, like the navbar on the actual forums.

I understand this is for google, but as someone else posted, some users are going to like using this if they are on dialup or just want to surf thru a bit faster.

Thanks for this, I think it's great. :)
It just needs a few more tweaks to be perfect IMHO.
Great job.

Here's link to add if you want.
(and for google to drop by our Joint after they hit this thread next dance LOL)

What about the same hack for vb3!?
The one in vb3 does not work on certain site because PHP is compiled in CGI.

The one you made worked fine with vb 2.9

what you need to do is go into every script index.php, forum, thread and find

include "$archiveurl/header.php";

and

include "$archiveurl/footer.php";

and make them

include "/home/cnczone/public_html/archive/header.php";

and

include "/home/cnczone/public_html/archive/footer.php";

i know it seams crazy but thats what i had to do to mine for that error to go away.

@Infopro: Neither Skuzzy or myself are adding Addons to this hack anymore...

@Aurore: hmm, normally it should work with vb3 also, just rename the functions into the new vb3 function equivalents, but maybe i'll port it over myself when i find the time :)

Just to let everyone know, the google update is all done. After an almost 3 month stint, google finally did a dance. So if you want to see how the archive has helped your site, just type in "site:www.yourdomain.com yourdomain". In other words, if my site was http://www.yahoo.com, I would type in:

site:www.yahoo.com yahoo

Yes, that was what happened. Google did a 2 month rollback temporarily so you lost some pages. It's all good now though, and google will be updating as normal.

I have a question:

If I/we upgrade to vB3 how will this effect all of our indexed pages in Google with this hack? Do we just leave this hack in place along with vB3's Archive? Will that work? Or do we just have to start over with vB3 and getting our Archives indexed again?

Well, THANKS for your help! :D

Just kidding. I fixed it and it now works with Apache2. You have to add this to your http.conf:

AcceptPathInfo On

Add this where you put all your AllowOverride stuff or in your VirtualHost paramaters. Enjoy folks.

http://www.mysticwicks.com/archive/

Now I just have to pretty it up.

CLicks INSTALL.

Please add me to the list, Xenon!

I have been trying to add the line AcceptPathInfo On, but can't find the correct place to put it! i have put it in incorrect place and http wouldn't run :(
Can anyone please help
btw, I am using Apache 1.3.27

I also tried to turn all allowoverride
but seems not working

I figured it out - in my httpd.conf file AllowOverride was set to none for my entire htdocs directory. All I had to do was turn on AllowOverride for that directory and it's working now.

I could still use help on how to have it pull the data from my slave server but look like it's coming from the main. TIA

thank you so much

I am using:

<?php
header("Location:http://www.mysite.com/forums");
?>

as an index.php so when typing my sites URL you are automatically forwarded right to the forum homepage.

Will this cause any interference with search engines out there being able to spider my site? I want to install this hack that makes it easy for Google to spider my site and index it, but I am worried if it will work the same since I am using the redirect.

Please help,
Thanks

You just need a machine with apache webserver.

So if you have a win server with apache there is no problem.

The only thing I recall changing for newer php versions is the includes in the index.php. They are old and call files with the file URL. Change the includes to server absolute paths.
ie. "/home/sitename/public_html/forums/archives/header.php" Instead of...
"http://www.sitename.com/forums/archives/header.php"

For online locations we use this code with this hack in online.php...

// is the user in the archives hack
$myfind='/\/forums\/archives/';
if( preg_match($myfind,$userinfo[location])){
$userinfo[where] = "Browsing the <A href=\"http://www.lakecs.com/forums/archives/\">Archives</A>";
}
// END is the user in the archives hack

This is placed at approx line 285 at the end of the switch statments default code. It works for us. It's not tested. It's not a released add-on hack.

Hi guys....

The forum archive software works well without glitches....

The only thing that I am a bit confused about is that although I have over 600 posts in my forum, Google has only indexed about 109 posts after 1 1/2 months on having the archive software installed.

In fact, Google has indexed only 109 posts in my forum steadily for about 3 or 4 weeks now.

Could there be any reason why Google is not spidering the other 500 posts in my forum?

Inktomi and altavista have been on my board for over a week now.

Inktomi is surfing the forums with as many as 40 bots at a time.

Altavista keeps appearing as browsing the archives.

Inktomi does hit the archives too, but the majority of the activity is on the regular forums.

PhoenixBB
08-21-2003, 12:20 AM
Yes, this is confusing me. Inktomi is currently browsing but the threads it's looking at are on the main board, there is no mention of the archives.

Also I noted it's looking at things which aren't part of the archive, like the calendar, journals, memberslist, and trying to register. I have a link back to the main index and portal on the archive page, but I made sure to put it in the footer. Would have expected if it was exploring that link it would have gone thru the archive ones first.

I definitely submitted the correct url for the archives, so does anyone know why they don't appear to be searching in there?

Thanx

there are certainly still different possibilities

This may be a stupid question but I want to make sure that I'm filling in the right information.

In the instructions it says to modify the config.php:

// Forums URL - Directory your vbulletin forums are in (NO TRAILING SLASH!)

$forumurl="http://www.importhookup.com";

I'm wondering if i need to add the "/forums" at the end of it because that's where my forum is located. Thank you guys for the great mod :)

Greetings all!

I've just finished moving my site from one server to another and now my archive page is no longer working. I thought perhaps the new server didnt have the mentioned "mod_mime & mod_rewrite" but the servers admin has verified that it does have those running.

I've gone thru all my archive files and all seems to be correct. What am I missing?

Here is all I see when a archive page tries to load.
"Warning: main(global.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/www/alfabb/bb/forums/archive/config.php on line 11"

smestas
09-24-2003, 09:35 PM
Got it fixed!

The issue was already discussed about previously in this same thread. All I had to do was to edit my path to "global.php" in the config file and it worked.

smestas
09-24-2003, 11:30 PM
OK,

Now I got a new problem which I didnt have before switching hosts. It seems that the initial archive page is loading but all of the links on the page produce a blank page. What gives?

I've went thru this thread to make sure that I'm not asking a question that has already been answered but so far none of the recomended fixes have worked. Im also running the latest version.

Regards,

Hey there SkuZZy, I just wanted to drop you a big thanks for this archive hack.

It installed in literally minutes, and our board's archive is now up and running.
Here's the example of our Archive section:

It's simple, loads super fast, and I'm sure our archive will be on Google in a bit.
Thanks for your work on this!

I'll be releasing a version TODAY that doesn't require mod_rewrite and will have all the same features. It will be version 2.0! ;)

It does however require .htaccess. But....... good news. Tommorow, I will be releasing a version that doesn't require mod_rewrite OR .htaccess ;)

The downside to that version will be that URL.s will look like http://www.whatever.com/archive/topic.php/400.html instead of just "topic/400.html". But it still works ;)

do you have a current google search hack?

Ok, so you get 1 zillion spots on google, whats that
mean? abosoulely nothing.. sure I am indexed on
google and some others, so? so far, the only way
they can find me is if the EXACT domain name is
entered, then big deal, your listing will come up,
what does that mean? that means that everyone has to
already know your exact domain to pull your listing,
but if thats the case, why even search it at all,
i have tried countless words that surround my
domain name, NOTHING, pulls everything ones and
his brothers site, but not mine... unless you can get
number 1 in all engines, you are nothing on the net.

so how come i can find my site only pulling my
domain name, but not with keywords, if you
cant find my site with keywords then you will
never be found but by accident.

I have had 1 domain for years, and it is just
now being indexed by some of the engines, last
but not least, if you do not enter the exact
domain name, you will never find me.

so what if you are indexed 1 million times...
it really means nothing if you cant be
found by keywords...

atomic fireball
11-24-2003, 05:39 PM
hvacr, what's your exact site and forum url?

Just because you can't find your site on google by doing keyword searches, doesn't mean others will have the same problem. There could be a few reasons:

1. You're not doing a proper keyword search
2. You're not giving google the proper amount of time to properly index your site

Again, post your site and forum, and let us see if we can get some searches to pop up on google.

Its from experiance, and knowing from being listed

although, this is the newest site that i am
using with this script, the funny thing is
that one listing has shown for the actual
site itself, but not from the script...

right now the only way that i have
found it is with direct domain search on google.

hvacr, I just checked your site, and you have a total of 8 posts for your entire forum. That's the answer. I'm guessing you simply don't have enough content to have your actual forum pages show up in google.

Google may spider your pages, but they don't always include all pages in their index. Only google really knows the true criteria as to what they use to have pages show up. With only 8 posts on your forum, most of which have less than 30 words or so, google probably just doesn't feel that it adds to their engine to have your forum listed at this time.

FlyBoy73
12-04-2003, 06:27 PM
I understand that, but if the links in the archive are different at all, wouldn't the Search Engine drop the then dead links and start re-indexing the new?

Does SkuZZy's archive hack archive the exact same way as Teck's and what vb3 is using?

It's the same thing. A subdomain merely points to another directory on a server. The forums subdomain is probably a directory off of the domain -- I think of it like an alias. I'm waiting to get bashed for my simple definition. :D

Okay - hope i get another opinion abt that !

This hack sounds very interesting than anyother similiar archiving hack, simply b'cos it doesn't have and url characters after a file extension like .php while other archiving hacks have directorues or files after a .php extension.

So, further to this...isn't it possible to have thread descriptions, posting date, number of posts and number of threads ( for forum home ) in the archive also. It would be much better.

Also, someone take a look at dbforums.com/archive. fastforward muct be coding a custom hack which is very very interesting. I wish, this particular hack also developes into one such !

Thanks much

This doesn't appear to have worked well for me, traffic-wise. :(

Everything installed fine and I first submitted to all the search engines in September. About a week later I did get a lot of bots online - most seemed to be Inktomi or AltaVista, I only saw Google a couple of times. I did notice that most of the time they didn't go into the archive even though I submitted that url (and have a link to it on my homepage and forum). However that was it really. I resubmitted over the next couple of months - and have just done so now - but only get a couple of bots (not google) come around.

I checked to find how many listings I got - a mere 32. This was about the same as I had before I installed this hack, and none are from the archive. Also like the guy above said, I have to type my url to get them. None of the keywords bring me up. If people know my url they ain't gonna look for me on the search engine, so I'm beginning to wonder what the point is.

On the rare occasions the bots appeared to look in the archive in the online.php I never saw a 'clean' url listed, but one with a session cookie in it. I thought it wasn't supposed to do that?

Anyway, it's been 3mths now and for whatever reason Google isn't archiving me. As my forum isn't doing brilliantly at the moment I was hoping for more traffic from the Search Engines, but that isn't happening. I've just submitted the archive url and the home page again, but I'm probably not gonna bother anymore.

Aside from the fact it got me no traffic, the archive is cool to read if my connection is ever sluggish. :)

Just make sure the archive is linked from the main pages of your site. I would recommend putting the link on the bottom of all your main forum pages. Look at http://www.battleforums.com for an example of this. At the bottom of all the forums pages, there is a "History" link, that links to the archive.

Mod_mime - You will NEED mod_mime to run these scripts. Mod_mime is a free module which enables a directive called "ForceType". This allows you to use the .htaccess file included to force your files into php mode, which allows simple URL's, without .php in them. If you can see the front page of your archive, but get an error page when you click on any links then this is your problem. To fix it, you will need to install mod_mime, or ask your host to do it. It's a FREE module. For more information, visit http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_mime.html

A word of advice.. I decided to switch to vb 3.0.1's included archive system and I have now gone from about 65,000! links/refs in Google to about 8,000, and have yet to see any return to the previous number yet.. I'm hoping that in the upcoming dance I will see some action/activity, but I haven't seen a Google Spider in the new archive system to date.

If you have a lot of links, it may be worth waiting for the port.

Thanks, Xenon, but it didn't work out. I copied that file to my root and nothing. Sure looks like a nice hack from how I've seen it work on other boards. For some reason my site doesn't really come up in google. I'd love to get google to spider my site and I thought this would have been the best way.

Well, although mod_mime is activated on my host, ForceType is disabled. They said they disabled it for security reasons?

They suggested that I use something like this:

RewriteEngine on
ReWriteBase /
RewriteRule (.*)articles(.*) $1index.php?articles$2
or
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^.+\.php$
RewriteRule ^products(.+)$ /products/index.php?dir=$1 [L]

This is an example these folks said helped them to get the short url names working. I'm not quite sure how to apply them to this utility though. Any assistance if anyone knows anything about this stuff would be greatly appreciated.

THanks

heh I kind of need help.

http://board.midibuddy.net/archive2/topic/69890.html

I want to make mine like that. You notice at the top how it shows the title of the thread in the title in the archive mine does not :( it just shows the title I put in for the config anyway I can make it so it's like the one above?

in archive_functions.php

replace the

function print_header()
{
global $archiveurl, $title;

echo "
<html>
<head><title>$title</title></head>
<base href=\"$archiveurl/\">
<body>
";
include "$archiveurl/header.php";
}

with
function print_header()
{
global $archiveurl, $title, $forum, $thread;

// Build Page Title
$pagetitle = $title;
if ($thread['title'] != '')
{
$pagetitle .= ' - ' . $thread['title'];
}
else if ($forum['title'] != '')
{
$pagetitle .= ' - ' . $forum['title'];
}

echo "
<html>
<head><title>$pagetitle</title></head>
<base href=\"$archiveurl/\">
<body>
";
include "$archiveurl/header.php";
}

that should work

Wow, Thank you that worked great. You are by far the smartest person ever. I appreciate that alot thanks again. Forum titles can be done the same way? That dosen't really matter tho the main thing I wanted was thread titles. Thank-you again you're great.

you're welcome :)

ah, i see i have used different variablenames in the two scripts (bad me (hey the script is very old ^^))

use this to get the forumtitles as well:

function print_header()
{
global $archiveurl, $title, $foruminfo, $thread;

// Build Page Title
$pagetitle = $title;
if ($thread['title'] != '')
{
$pagetitle .= ' - ' . $thread['title'];
}
else if ($foruminfo['title'] != '')
{
$pagetitle .= ' - ' . $foruminfo['title'];
}

echo "
<html>
<head><title>$pagetitle</title></head>
<base href=\"$archiveurl/\">
<body>
";
include "$archiveurl/header.php";
}

Hi, im trying to install this into vB2.3.0 and have a question about your instructions.

It says to load up the 7 files listed to the new Archive folder, but in your zip file there is an 8th file "archive_functions.php" should this be uploaded too?

Also, as recommended I have included a link to the archive in the footer using the link "./archive", but in the template preview mode it shows it linking to http://localhost/forum/admin/archive but in the IE or Firefox browser the link shows correctly as http://localhost/forum/archive

What is the best way to set this up correctly (the actual location of the archive folder is localhost/forum/archive)

thanks

I use vB Easy Archive Final on vBulletin 2.3.3

Currently we're working on making a site with the latest version of vBulletin on another server. Once it's finished we will change the DNS. What I'd like to know is if it's possible to copy the /forums/archive directory from the old site to the new site on the other server, so I won't lose the search enginge traffic.

I don't intend to move the actual threads to the new site with ImpEx, I'm affraid it will cause problems. Will copying the /forums/archive directory to the new site/server work if the actual threads will not be there?

Will I need to make any adjustments?
