Queries:
A nice feature of mYvBindex is that it performs only 11 queries with all the options turned off, no matter how many news articles or latest threads you choose to display. Some options will cause the script to perform extra queries, but even with all the options turned on it still performs only 29 queries at max.

Here is a list of each extra function that will cause extra queries: Poll - 2 queries
User's Avatar - 1 query
Private Messages - 1 query
Buddy List - 1 query
Online Users - 3 queries
Mini Calendar - 1 query
Weather - 2 queries
Poll and/or News Smilies - 1 query
Stats - 5 queries

Updates from version 3.2.1
After the release of v3.2.1 a couple of small bugs were found. They affected the ability to edit a news post from the link on the homepage, pulling the wrong post from a thread for the news section, and updating your most users ever online if a new record is set. The changes from v3.2 to 3.2.1 were minimal, so those should be the only bugs found. Upgrading once again is very easy. Just download the new files, change the path in the myvbindex.php file, and upload it over your existing one.

Updates from version 3.2
v3.2.1 is again just a small maintenance release. The main change in this version is the way the forum permissions are done. Before, the forum permissions would cause the latest threads query to take much longer than it should (mostly on larger forums). Now with the new permissions system in place, the query to pull the latest threads should take less than 0.01 seconds. Other than the permissions section, the only other changes were a few optimizations to the code syntax. Upgrading from v3.2 is simple - Just upload the new myvbindex.php file over your existing one and you're done.

Updates from version 3.1
v3.2 is mostly another maintenance release, and will hopefully be the last release for vBulletin 2.X (unless any bugs are found). Here are a list of all the changes.
Fixed a bug where setting the "Show Latest Threads Icon?" option to "No" could disable the latest threads section.
Fixed a bug where signatures with vBcode were not displayed properly in the news section.
Fixed a bug where the icons in the news and latest thread parts weren't displaying the right icon for some users.
Added an option to completely disable signatures in news posts.
Added an option to select a random poll from any forum for the poll part of the hack.
Further optimized parts of the code and slightly changed part of the structure.
Now shows "No Buddies Online" in the buddy list if no buddies are online.
Changed so it will no longer show a default icon for the news and latest threads unless your options are also set to show a default icon on the forumdisplay page.
Now shows the last poster and last post time when you hold your mouse over the title of a thread in the Latest Threads part.
The install script has been re-written so you can install, upgrade, uninstall, update your news posts (useful for first time installations where a news forum already exists), or install just the templates (useful after upgrading vBulletin to a new version) all from one file.
Significantly reduced the size of the weather_install.php file (from 3.0 MB to 1.25 MB) so it will not take so long to upload to your server.
Fixed a couple of small spacing issues in the poll templates.
Fixed a problem with JJR512's weather hack not pulling the weather forcast.
Added a FAQ section to the readme file to help common problems.

Upgrading should take no longer than 2 minutes and instructions can be found at the bottom of the readme file.

Updates from version 3.0
v3.1 is mostly a maintenance release to help cut down on first time installation problems. Other than that, the biggest difference you will notice is the template "style" has changed to mesh better with vBulletin (see screenshots above). You do not have to install the new templates as you will have the option to install the new templates or to skip that step in the install file. Other than the templates, here is a list of the other changes:
A few more "error checking" features have been added to ensure you won't get a nasty sql error if you leave your News or Poll Forum ID, or any of the other fields blank.
The problem some users were experiencing with the temperature for the weather part of the hack should be fixed for good.
The "Show Poll" option in the Admin CP is removed as this can now be disabled simply by leaving the "Poll Fourm ID" filed blank.
Fixed a small typo and optimized parts of the code a little further.
Slightly changed the position of the days and numbers in the calendar part.
Fixes a bug where the Today's Birthday part wouldn't point to the correct url.

Upgrading should take no longer than 2 minutes and instructions can be found at the bottom of the readme file.

Updates from version 2.0
Removed the option from the Admin CP to allow smilies in News posts as this can now be set per post just as you would when making a regular post.
Added a stats section with info such as total members, threads, posts, newest member, top poster, and today's birthdays.
Added a "Today's Events" section under the calendar that will display any events that are scheduled for the current day, and will only be visible if there are events listed for the current day.
Added an option to show the poster's avatar with the news post.
You can now have your signature displayed with the news post. This is controlled when posting the message just as you would with a regular post.
Added an option to display the news post's rating with the news.
Added options to show small icons to allow users to show a printable version of the news post and an option to allow users to email their friends a link to the news post.
Added an option to allow/disable HTML in news posts.
Added an option to allow/disable the [img] tag in news posts.
Shows the number of times a news post has been viewed.
Shows the number of new posts since the users last visit.
Shows the number of replies to the poll if poll discussions are allowed.
Fixed a bug where the search box would take you to the search page rather than displaying the results.
Fixed a bug where setting the News Posts Maximum to 0 would disable the news rather than giving it no limit.
Optimized the code a little more to increase performance.

Looks like a rip of of vBhome from the code, I hope you asked TECK's and everyone elses permission to distribute the code?

Origional name too :rolleyes:

I hate to say this. But to me. This is the best looking one I've seen yet. In my view...look's a little better than the one from php portals. I'll install sometime tomorrow.

As shown in the credits, the hack uses modified versions of Teck's "Latest XX Threads on Fourmshome" and Kurafire's Simple Newsportal" hack for the news section (with permission from both). It looks similar to vBhome because I was inspired from Teck's hack to make my own. vBhome is the best hack I've seen so far and has a lot of nice features, but it's not quite what I wanted... So I made my own. I thought others might like it and it's features, so I tweaked it up a bit and got it ready to release.
And I agree, the name mYvBindex isn't very original, but I'm not that creative and that's about the best I could think of. If anyone can think of a better name I'll gladly change it. :)

NTLDR

Also, you need to remove that huge chunk of origional vB code, you will find that your not allowed to include it in that file.

Tigga
10-17-2002, 08:59 AM
Ok, I wasn't really sure if that would be "excessive" vBcode or not. I'll upadate the files and re-upload in a minute.

when you will learn that beauty is not important while coding maybe you will understand something about PHP.
to people like you what is important is that it has nice boxes and colors, not that it's ruining your server.
did you know that 50% of the hacks here are just crap? from over 1500hacks released here, i could say that about 50-70 are written without any mistakes on it. not to count the security issues some of them pose, bad queries, terrible code skills, etc.

plurplanet, did you noticed how i did it me? i posted in my vbHome the links to the people who made the hacks to be added as addons to my original code. many people ripped my code and changed few variables, while "renaming it".
i got used to this, and moderators dont really care about it, so is ok.
throwing a bunch of hacks toghether, made by others and rename that to another name is not something to be proud of.

now, plur, if you want only (i dont force you), i want you to make me a favor. please remove the latest threads code and add instead instructions how to install the hack onto your portal. i looked at your code and it's identical to my hack, with the exception of some variable names.

i recommend you to take a look at my vbHome (lite) (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36756) aproach:
- i write my original code by myself (as i do in all my hacks)
- i place links for add-ons so people can install those addons onto their portal.

thanks for understanding.
all the best,
TECK.

Teck - I will replace the code if you really want me to. I PM'd you about this last week asking permission though so I wouldn't have to worry about something like this. If you would prefer that it wasn't in there then I will simply replace it with the Latest Threads part in KuraFire's Simple News Portal hack. I would just point people to your hack and let them make the modifications themselves, but I think most people would be annoyed by this. That's the main reason I included the Mini Calendar and Weather Mk hacks with the file too, so that people wouldn't have to spend too much time adding on everything.
As for your comment in your thread about the number of queries the weather install script does - Your right, the installation does make a lot of queries to your database, as it would if you were installing the original. That is why I made it as a seperate script and made notes to skip the steps to install it if you weren't planning on using it.

TECK
10-17-2002, 10:57 AM
is up to you. as i said before, i dont force you.
do it only if you find it ethical and fair.

about the queries, i didnt refer to your script.
i was simply pointing an issue to Preech that many people here neglect the code for the look, wich is totally wrong.

if i would be an admin here i would install a review system, so people can read the problems the hack generates in general and the coder to learn from his mistakes.

thanks.

Functionality beats visual any day in my book. :)

It's kind of like buying a used car, only there's no money transferred here.

You walk up to a beauty of a car and can't believe how shiny and new it looks on the outside, until you pop your head in under the hood or peek at the interior.

I'd rather have a pos jalopee that looks like it came out of a bad bladerunner parody, but it runs like a kitten. ;)

Hi Delmon. That error means you've got the path to your forums wrong in your myvbindex.php file. It should be set to "/home/delmon/public_html/forums". Also, your myvbindex file should be in your root directory instead of your forums directory, unless there's some particular reason you prefer to have it in your forums directory. If you do want to leave it in your forums directory you can simply delete that line and that should fix the problem too. ;)

I'm working on the next version of mYvBindex now too. The next version will include an option for polls plus a few other things, and the coding will be much cleaner. :)

when will the madness stop? you're so wrong. vbHome is the one and only original portal, coded entirely by me. the rest are all copycats, "improved" (actually deproved, since the no. of queries is doubled) with borrowed hacks from other people work.

if you look at the code everyone conviniently decided to use parts of my code, buddy.
not to talk that some of you are "amased" by nice html code but neglect the most important thing: the code.

FWIW, vBHome is almost entirely original. vBIndex "borrowed" a lot from vBPortal. mYvBIndex "borrows" from all the predecessors. :) From what I can see, vBHome has the most elegant code, with the least queries. That doesn't mean it's wrong, as long as credit is given where it's due.

That is true but from v2.1 I have re-written a majority of the PHP code for it and all credit has been given where its due. However vBindex will be repaced by a full portal written by scratch by me eventally anyway.

First of all "TECK" or should I call you nakkid, I never made any claim as to the nature or origin of any of these portals/front page hacks so I'm not sure where I am "wrong".

Second of all, I'm not your buddy TECK/nakkid. Hell I don't even know you and after this post, I don't think I want to either.

I don't care which one is the original, I don't care where the code was borrowed copied, and frankly, I could care less where even the most remote spark of creativity came from. The point is, instead of taking this attitude that your product is better, your code is better, all hail i'm the creator, bow before my l33tness, you should understand that while some of us enjoy the variety of hacks, we still reserve the right to pick and choose which hacks we want to install.

Your hack vbhome lite was Closed by request of nakkid.
on 5-28-02. 3 months later (08-27-02), when you decided to reopen it with the help of your friend James Tingle who wrote the commercial version, vbindex was already alive by 08-04-02 and I was all over it as an alternative to both vbportal and vbhome.

Maybe instead of spreading yourselves (plural for ALL hackers) thin, a joint effort on projects like this would yield some amazing results, since they are in fact meant for US, the community.

Just my $0.02, take it for what it's worth.

4. I never claimed that you were this type of person, the only thing you're doing here is drawing straws.

If you're going to attempt to continue this childish diatribe, then I suggest you and I take this offline. You started this meandering waffle, by misreading a post by someone you know nothing of. When you get your facts aligned, then maybe we can discuss them like adults.

So I go to the uninstall and there was a query missing index_news_readmore.
So I went in to the uninstall file and added it to it cause it was causing a mysql error, now the problem still exsist and I cannot get rid of it.
I am afraid I might have to totally delete my database just to fix this issue unless someone else has some idea on how to fix this.
With only 185 members some people might not think that its not that many, but there is also over 11,000 post on it so that makes a lil more differnce.
Can someone please help me out here cause I really dont want to redo my board from scratch!

Madhouse - What problem are you having exactly? The un-install script removes the database edits first, so a missing template shouldn't be a problem. If the problem your having is users can't post new threads, you should make sure you edited your newthread.php and newreply.php files to remove the modifications for mYvBindex. If that doesn't help or that's not the problem you're having please post more info and the exact error you're getting and I will help you to get things running again.

Plur, i think the weather is not in the template install....cause it didnt install the template for it.

Preech

I hope I don't get in any trouble for doing this.

Tigga

Madhouse - The templates for the weather is now installed with the weather_install.php script as it's kinda pointless for someone to install those templates if they're not using the weather. If you upgraded from 1.0 and didn't want to run the weather installer again I can attach just the templates here for you.

Preech - The path is your problem. It should be set to the path to your forums, not the url. If you're not sure what the path is, you can create a file with just this content:

<?php phpinfo(32); ?>

Save it as info.php and upload it into your forums folder.
Then go to that file in your browser and you will see a list of options that were set by your host. One of them is called:

_SERVER["PATH_TRANSLATED"]

Copy that path, paste it over what you currently have and it should work fine. :)

Here's a template install script for ya Madhouse. :)
Just upload it to your admin directory and run it from your browser. Before you run the script, check to see if your mYvBindex options in your Admin CP has an option to turn the weather on (it should be the 3rd from the last option). If not, run step 3 of this installer (where it asks if you want to log into your Admin CP or add the option to show the weather). If you already have the weather button under your options you can skip that step and just log into your Admin CP.

Hmmm... That looks like you put in the wrong info for the News ID under your mYvBindex options. Judging by the error, it looks like you have http://www.4u-servers.net/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=5, when all you should have in there is the number 5.
If that's not the case, double check that you made the correct modifications to your newthread.php and newreply.php files.
Let me know if that helps. :)

Yep your right, i put the full address instead of just the number + for some reason when i used the search and replace function on my software, it left the code in strange places.

All is working now except for me changing the header area and getting the banner script and stuff on it. Should it not do that anyway? Im getting a bit at the top of Admin area when i look at templates

$only['getinfo'] = 'User Info Display'; $only['index'] = 'mYvBindex';

Thanks for the help, better get some kip now as its nearly 5.30am and i got to be up again at 7am :(

Looking good. :)
After you get some sleep, you may want to check that you have the following lines of code in the file...

$recorddate = vbdate($dateformat,$maxusers[1]);
$recordtime = vbdate($timeformat,$maxusers[1]);

I noticed that it's not showing the date for your "Most users ever online" part. I looked at my install file and I wasn't very clear about that part. I said to copy all lines between another one and the code above, but I guess I should have said to include those lines as well. ;)
Just put that code above right before this code and it should work fine.

$getbgrow=getrowcolor();
eval("\$loggedinusers = \"".gettemplate('index_online')."\";");

PlurPlanet, I tried your hack and it s great but unfortunately I have two issues.. well maybe three issues..

At first, your hack didnt show who's online even though I turn it on...

Second, it fixed on date (12-31-1969) all of time, but any date like create thread, post, and more work normal..

Third, I wonder is it possible for you to create divide weather_install hack? I kept got time out every time I try weather_install due.. I cannot add the weather feature which I really want.

Thanks, if need the url, I ll more than glad to provide you thur PM, I prefer to have it private.

Ahh... You're sneaky. Editing your post while I was replying. :p
For the header, you can do one of 2 things...
1) Copy your original vBulletin header template and replace the code in your index_header template with that. You will then have to add $bburl in front of each link so that they will point to the right place.

2) If you want it to use your regular forums header, look in your myvbindex.php file for the following code:
eval("\$index_header .= \"".gettemplate('index_header')."\";");
And replace it with
eval("\$index_header .= \"".gettemplate('header')."\";");
Then you will also have to add $bburl in front of each link in your original header template to ensure the links will point to the right place. This will change it so it looks for your original vB header instead of the index_header template. If you do that, you should also look near the top of the myvbindex.php file for "index_header" in the $templatesused section. Replace that with just "header" to avoid adding an unnecessary query to that page. Then in your index template, look for "$index_header" and replace that with "$header".

Actually... Could you email me (brian@plurplanet.com) the contents of your myvbindex.php file? It looks like you may have missed a little code when copying and pasting. If it's what I think it was, I should have been a little clearer in the install instructions, so it's really my fault.

Grrr! Sorry about that... I took out a piece of code when you first posted to see if I could recreate your problem and forgot I had done that. In your myvbindex file search for this code:

$recordusers = $maxusers[0];

Upload the file and it'll work fine. :)

Ok, here is a zip file with all the queries that you can do in phpMyAdmin. You will want to open each text file included, copy and paste them into phpMyAdmin and run the queries.
Be sure to run the queries in the "create_tables.txt" file FIRST. Then run the queries listed in the other .txt files (it doesn't matter what order) individually. Each of those queries will probably take a few minutes to execute. After those are finished you should upload the weather_template.php to your fourms/admin folder and run that in your browser. That is just a small file that will install all the templates for you. After that you can go into your Admin CP and turn the weather on under your mYvBindex options.

Actually, I'm not completely sure about that one. As you see in the file, that's a hack created by JJR512 that I added in with my script. It works fine on my personal site and another I did, but I have the same problem on my "test" server. I read through JJR512's thread earlier and saw that one other person posted with the same problem, but nobody has posted a fix yet. I'll play around with it a bit and see if I can figure out why it doesn't display correctly for some people, but I can't guarantee I'll find a fix for this one...

Tigga
11-04-2002, 06:23 AM
Well so far I'm not having much luck figuring out why it doesn't work. I've looked over the code and everything seems ok, but I'll play with it a bit more tonight.
For now you can just turn it off, or you could edit out the temperature parts (though in my opinion that's one of it's main features). Maybe I'll figure it out or someone will post a fix in the original thread soon. If you decide you want to uninstall it, you can just upload the myvbindex_uninstall.php file to your admin folder. Then you would go to http://yoursite.com/forum/admin/myvbindex_uninstall.php?step=3. That will remove all the weather templates and database fields. Just be sure not to do that unless you're positive you want to uninstall it because there won't be a conformation screen and you'll have to re-do everything for the weather if you decide you want it back. ;)

Which part exactly? If you're referring to the news, please look at the part in the install file that tells you how to set the permissions for the forum. If you're talking about something else please explain what you mean a little more. :)

BlueHawk
11-04-2002, 07:18 AM
Basicly its not using the header settings, not showing the php banner script at the top and is using old button links accross top instead of those in the php file. The buttons are turned off for the normal forum.

Take any thread eg. http://www.4u-servers.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=224 you wil see whats missing :)

Tigga
11-04-2002, 07:24 AM
Ahhh... Yes, that made it much more obvious. :)
By default it uses the index_header template for the header since some people may want a different header for their homepage. See post # 73 (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?postid=318482#post318482) to see how to change it.

BlueHawk
11-04-2002, 07:43 AM
lol now the buttons have gone :) but its not using the template "phpinclude" this has the whole php file with banner script, logo and link pictures.

(you must be getting annoyed with me now, sorry).

Tigga
11-04-2002, 07:55 AM
Which method did you use to change it? If you used the 2nd way so it would just call your regular header, I forgot that you would need to change "$index_header" to "$header" in your index template (sorry, it's late ;)).
If you used the first method, I'm not completely sure why it wouldn't have worked. You said you used a php file for your header... Is there maybe a place to set a path to the file or something like that? If you could post the header & phpinclude templates or email them to me (brian@plurplanet.com) so I can have a look I'll see if I can figure it out. Or you could try the 2nd method to include it, which really is better if you want to have the same header for your forums and index page. That way you don't have to edit both anytime you change it. ;)

Tigga
11-04-2002, 08:04 AM
Ok, it's late... Scratch that part about changing $index_header to $header. It's still using the $index_header variable to call the header, so that's not the problem.

The post was made after you installed myvbindex, right?
Do you have only the number 2 in the box for the News Forum ID?
Did you make the changes to newthread.php and newreply.php and upload them?

Graphics

i made the post AFTER i installed the hack. and number 2 is the ID for the news forums

Tigga
11-05-2002, 05:58 AM
Did the install file run correctly? I'm assuming it did since it created the templates and such... The only other thing it could be is you didn't make the right changes to newthread.php and newreply.php. Double check that you made the 2 changes in each of those files, upload them again, and make another news post. There's no reason that shouldn't work, but if it doens't let me know and we'll get the problem solved. :)

Graphics
11-05-2002, 05:59 AM
i have done it correctly but what is the problem?

Tigga
11-05-2002, 06:07 AM
If it's not showing up something had to have been missed... If you have phpMyAdmin, you can log into there and check your "post" table to make sure it has a column called "isnews" (it should be the last one in the post table). There's really not a reason that shouldn't be there since it's the first step in the installer, but it wouldn't hurt to double check that it's there.
Could you email me (brian@plurplanet.com) with your newthread.php and newreply.php files so I can have a look at them?

Graphics
11-05-2002, 06:12 AM
email sent with the two files.

Tigga
11-05-2002, 06:24 AM
Ok, I looked over those files and both of them were modified correctly. Do you have phpMyAdmin where you could check to make sure the "isnews" column is there? I don't see a reason it wouldn't be if the installer ran correctly, but then again I don't really see a reason the news wouldn't be working. You could also try re-uploading your newreply & newthread files and then try making another news post.
If it's still not working, I could take a look at things for you if you would like to make a temporary account on your forums and give me access to your admin pages. Of course I understand if you don't want to give some stranger access to your admin pages, but it would be easier to locate the problem if I could look through the pages.

Ok, I may have found the problem... What do you have your "News Posts Maximum" set to? If it's set to 0 try changing it to something else. That was a bug in v1.0 that I thought I had fixed, but apparently I missed it. I just tried it on my personal site and when I set that to 0 the news didn't appear.

Just incase you decide you'd like to change it later, here's what you'd do...

Open myvbindex.php and look for this line:

$calendarbits.="<td bgcolor=\"{ firstaltcolor}\"><smallfont color=\"{ caldaycolor}\">$daylink</font></td>";

(Be sure to remove the space in front of { firstaltcolor} and { caldaycolor} when you search for that)

Then you'd just change { firstaltcolor} to whatever you'd like it to be, and if you'd like to change the font color you'd just change the { caldaycolor}.

Hi Chip,
It should already take you back to the homepage when you log in. Be sure you followed the instructions, specifically the part where you edit the 2 lines in your member.php file, and make sure you uploaded that file to your forums directory. If for some reason that doens't work let me know.

chipheodeptrai - Do you have any other hacks installed where you modified newreply.php? The only modification made for this hack is one to add a field to the database to determine if the post is news, which shouldn't affect quoting a post.
For your question about adding forum info... Yes, it can be added fairly easily. Keep in mind though that for each thing you add (total posts, total threads, newest member, etc) it will add an additional query to your database. To add these, open your myvbindex.php file and look for :
// Welcome Text & Buddy List or Logincode

Then right above that add:
// total members
$numbersmembers=$DB_site->query_first('SELECT COUNT(*) AS users,MAX(userid) AS max FROM user');
$numbermembers=number_format($numbersmembers['users']);

// get total posts
$countposts=$DB_site->query_first('SELECT COUNT(*) AS posts FROM post');
$totalposts=number_format($countposts['posts']);

// get total threads
$countthreads=$DB_site->query_first('SELECT COUNT(*) AS threads FROM thread');
$totalthreads=number_format($countthreads['threads']);

// get newest member
$getnewestusers=$DB_site->query_first("SELECT userid,username FROM user WHERE userid=$numbersmembers[max]");
$newusername=$getnewestusers['username'];
$newuserid=$getnewestusers['userid'];

Then you would just add the variables $numbermembers, $totalposts, $totalthreads, and (for newest member) <a href="member.php?s=$session[sessionhash]&action=getinfo&userid=$newuserid">$newusername</a> to the template where you would like them to appear.

PlurPlanet, any luck with avatar?

There is one concern that I need your help with. I have two different style and selectable for members to use. Anyway after I change to different style and I modify style a bit to add home (wwwurl.com/index.php) to access myvbindex instead of delete in url in IE or whatever to access. And myvbindex kept old style even after I change the style. Not only that I tried to use url in IE to access and found it still keep old style too.

Is it possible for me to change that to work with multiple style to access myvbindex with whatever style I select? Thanks

Sorry, I haven't had as much time to work on this lately. I've been doing a lot of work on my site, plus I've starting work on a bigger project. :)
It's not a problem getting it to display the news poster's avatar, but I've had problems getting it out of a query loop (basically for every news post it will add one query to the page). If you'd still like to add the avatars despite the loop let me know and I'll post the code to change. I'm not going to release the new version though until I can get that loop fixed.
For the styles - I just looked at it and it appears that the colors, images, and such are changing as they should, just not the header. Since your header is the same for your forums and your index, you should be able to look in your index template and replace "$index_header" with "$header". Then it will just pull your regular header templates instead of the index_header template. If for some reason that doesn't work let me know.

Oh, and Graphics... You should be able to do that using the hack on here. Just make the changes to myvbindex.php instead of your forums index.php file. I haven't really looked at that hack but it should work.

Goldknight

Ok, here's a quick & easy way to add the news avatars. I wouldn't recommend adding it if you have a couple of dozen news posts, but otherwise it won't really have an effect on performance.

In your myvbindex.php find:

// News Comments

Right above that add:

$newsavatar='';
$newsavatarurl=getavatarurl($news[userid]);
if ($newsavatarurl=='') {
$newsavatarurl='images/clear.gif';
} else {
$newsavatarurl=''.$newsavatarurl.'';
}
eval("\$newsavatar = \"".gettemplate('index_news_avatar')."\";");

Then create a new template called index_news_avatar with the following content:
<img src="$bburl/$newsavatarurl" border="0">
(Of course you can edit that if you would like it to link to the news posters profile or something like that)

Then in your index_newsbits template add $newsavatar wherever you'd like the avatar to appear.
That's it. :)

I should have a little more time to work on the hack and release the next version by next week. After that I probably won't be releasing any future versions for a while as I'm going to be concentrating on a much bigger project that will combine myvbindex with a bunch of other options. Assuming everything goes well I'll be looking for beta testers in a few weeks, so I'll post more info about it then. :)

Hi,

This seems like a great hack, but I'm really only interested in displaying the latest threads on my main page, nothing else...no polls, no news, no nothing.

How would I go about doing this? I just want to have a section on a regular php page (my main index page, not my forum index page) that just displays the latest threads.

Is this possible?
Thanks

Goldknight
11-21-2002, 07:01 PM
Visionray, yeah it is possible. You can turn off these features at AdminCP right after you install this hack.

Tigga
11-21-2002, 07:09 PM
He could do it that way, but it would be pretty pointless to have all the extra code if it wasn't being used. If you look on here for TECK's "Latest XX Threads on Fourmhome", you should be able to edit that pretty easily to change it for use on a homepage. (I think all you would do is add the chdir('/path/to/your/fourm'); above the coding, though I haven't looked at it in a while). If you're not that good with PHP or can't figure it out let me know and I can make a file for you.

I did that but for what was in this txt file:

CREATE TABLE weather_country (
countryid smallint(6) NOT NULL auto_increment,
regionid smallint(6) NOT NULL default '0',
country_title varchar(50) NOT NULL default '',

Tony - Those queries should work. The only other thing I can suggest is checking the Weather Mk thread and downloading the queries from there. One note though - I've had the weather turned off for my homepage for the last 2 weeks now. It's hardly been working, and even when it did it would cause my homepage to take 10-20 seconds to load. I think they changed the settings at theweatherchannel.com because their site's still working, but not the script. Once I have the time I may see if I can write a new one.

Ok, your settings are fine so I would guess it's something with another hack. Were you able to post a new news topic after you installed the hack? If so, could you check with phpMyAdmin to see if the news column has an "N" or a "Y" in it for that column? Whenever you email me your files I'll test them on one of my servers and hopefully find out what's causing the conflict.
Also, if you already had a news forum before you installed the hack those posts will not show up, only new ones. If you did already have that section I can give you a query to run that will update those posts once everything's working right.

I think there's a hack for the top xx posters here that could probably be integrated with this. If not let me know and I can probably make a quick one for you.
The page shouldn't take more than about 1/2 second to load though (usually closer to 1/10 of a second). Do you have the weather part of the hack turned on? If so then that would be the cause. I actually had to take that off my personal website because it was causing my homepage to take 10-20 seconds to load!

Do you mean the temperature? That's something that I never could figure out... It works just fine on most servers, but for some reason it won't show the temperature on others. That part isn't my hack, but I've looked at the coding and everything looks good, so my only guess would be it's something to do with the way certain servers are configured.

Is there a way to get it to show the last person who posted in a thread instead of the thread starter? Or would that create too many queries? Just wondering.

Tigga
12-03-2002, 08:51 PM
That's not hard to do at all and won't affect the queries one way or another. Just open up your myvbindex.php file and look for:
$threads=$DB_site->query("SELECT thread.threadid,thread.title,thread.replycount,thr ead.postusername
You would just replace "thread.postusername" at the end of that with "thread.lastposter". Then you would want to edit your index_threadbit template and replace this:

by <a href="$bburl/member.php?s=$session[sessionhash]&action=getinfo&userid=$thread[postuserid]">$thread[postusername]</a>

with this:

by <a href="$bburl/member.php?action=getinfo&find=lastposter&threadid=$thread[threadid]">$thread[lastposter]</a>

350Chevy
12-03-2002, 09:34 PM
hmm, my threads string looks completely different in myvbindex.php

$threads=$DB_site->query("SELECT * FROM thread WHERE open='1' AND open<>10 $iforumperms ORDER BY lastpost DESC LIMIT $maxlatethreads");
while ($thread=$DB_site->fetch_array($threads)) {
$title = unhtmlspecialchars($thread['title']);
if (strlen($thread['title']) > $maxthreadchars and $maxthreadchars!=0) {
$title = substr($thread['title'], 0, $maxthreadchars - 3) . '...';
}
if ($showthreaddate) {
$thread['time'] = vbdate($timeformat, $thread['dateline']);
$thread['date'] = date("m-d-y", $thread['dateline']);
}

The news string looks simular to what you posted but that's for the news.. not the recent threads. ;)

Ahhh, sorry about that. I changed that query a little when I was working on things and didn't realize it wasn't like that for the version on here. Really though, it makes your job a little easier. Just make the template modification above and it should work fine. :)

Gotcha! Thanks again! :)

I'm still trying to figure out why the weather temperatures don't show.

The front page now takes about 6 seconds or longer to load now too. There's not a lot of queries and the server and site are very fast. It's just the main page that takes a while to load. I've noticed other people with slower servers on sites that have low bandwidth and they load much faster than mine. Something doesn't add up...??

Tigga
12-03-2002, 09:56 PM
No problem at all. :)
I'm still puzzled as to why the temperature doesn't work on some servers too... It works fine on my personal site, but not on my test server.
Does the page load ok if the weather is turned off? I was having that problem with mine too. It's nothing to do with the queries or anything like that, it's because it's now taking forever for it to get the weather info from theweatherchanel.com's server. That wasn't a problem a few moths ago, but for some reason it's now taking forever to get that info. I'm going to try to find another solution to display the weather when I get the time because I really like that feature, but I can't deal with my homepage taking 10-20 seconds to load.

nah.. with it turned off it still takes the same amount of time. The old index page was loading in 0.2 seconds or there abouts. Really fast.. I wonder how it loads on dialup.. lol

Maybe because it's grabbing a bunch of different templates where as my old index was only a few templates that did almost the same as your myvbindex. Yours looks better so I went with yours. ;)

It really should take less than 1/2 second to load. Do you know how to put vBulletin in debug mode? If not, just open up your admin/config.php file and add $debug="1"; somewhere in there. Then upload that file, go to your index page and add ?explain=1 at the end of the url. That will show a breakdown of each query performed, how long it took, and etc. If you'd like to do that and post the results here I'll be glad to take a look and find out what's causing your page to take so long. Oh, and be sure not to leave it in debug mode afterwards because it could be a security risk. ;)

Oh, and it wouldn't have anything to do with the number of templates it's calling. It would have to be a query somewhere that's taking a while to execute.

Well that would be the problem... Right there it took 3.3 seconds just to load the poll. Now that I know what the cause is I'll look over the files and see if I can figure out why it would be taking that long.

No problem.. I had another poll running before that didn't use the vB software and worked fine. If anything I'll just slap that puppy in there in place of the current poll.. ;)

Thanks for the suggestion. I never would have thought of that. And I must say you've helped me greatly. Much more help from you than anyone on any other forum! Many thanks! :D

No problem at all. I never mind helping when I have the time. And thanks for the link. :)

When I checked the time it takes for a poll on my test server that query was done in about 0.002 seconds. The only thing I can think of at the moment is maybe you have another hack installed that's affecting it?
You can try replacing the query:
$pollinfo=$DB_site->query_first("SELECT poll.*,thread.* FROM poll LEFT JOIN thread ON (thread.pollid = poll.pollid) WHERE thread.forumid='$pollsforum' ORDER BY poll.dateline DESC LIMIT 1");{
With this one here:
$pollinfo=$DB_site->query_first("SELECT poll.pollid,poll.question,poll.dateline,poll.optio ns,poll.votes,poll.active,poll.numberoptions,poll. timeout,poll.multiple,poll.voters,thread.pollid,th read.open FROM poll LEFT JOIN thread ON (thread.pollid = poll.pollid) WHERE thread.forumid='$pollsforum' ORDER BY poll.dateline DESC LIMIT 1");{
The original query tells the script to select all columns from the thread and poll tables. The new one tells it to only select the fields that are really necessary. Normally it selecting a couple of extra fields shouldn't be a problem, but I guess it could be in this case. Anyways, try that and see if it helps any and if not I'll try to figure out something else.

350Chevy
12-03-2002, 11:41 PM
nah.. still at 3.6 seconds.. no problem.. I'll add the code in there to show my old poll.. I think it may have something to do when I upgraded from phpBB to vB. My forums and threads are way off as you could tell with the forum ID's being in the 100's. My post ID's are in the 100,000's! :D

Everything runs fine it's just the post and forum ID's are set really really high and I have no idea on how to drop them down. More than likely that's the cause. I'll play around with adding the old poll. For now I need to throw some steaks on the Bar-B. :)

Tigga
12-03-2002, 11:56 PM
I was kind of wondering why the forumid #'s were so high. I still don't see why that would affect the way the poll functions, but then again I've never imported phpbb into vb, so I don't know much about the way it does it. Oh well, enjoy your steaks! :)

hmm.. it's still using all 5000+ threads...??

Tigga
12-04-2002, 02:37 AM
I'm not quite sure if I follow you about it using all 5000 threads... The first query looks the way it should, though I'm still not sure why it would be taking so long to execute. The other query there is from the latest threads part of the hack where it is checking each forum.

If you want to try something else, you can try replacing the poll query with this on here:
$pollinfo=$DB_site->query_first("SELECT poll.pollid,poll.question,poll.dateline,poll.optio ns,poll.votes,poll.active,poll.numberoptions,poll. timeout,poll.multiple,poll.voters FROM poll ORDER BY poll.dateline DESC LIMIT 1");{

See what the time is like with that one and if it isn't improved, then try this one here:
$pollinfo=$DB_site->query_first("SELECT thread.pollid,thread.open FROM thread WHERE thread.forumid='$pollsforum' ORDER BY thread.dateline DESC LIMIT 1");{

Neither of those will actually fix the problem or let the poll work properly, but the first one leaves out the call to the thread table, and the second one leaves out the call to the poll table. If either of those improves the time then we know which table it's taking so long to query and will at least know a little more about what's causing it. Also, if the first query reduces the time, I may be able to work around calling the thread table.

Hate to interrupt your guys troubleshooting session here but I'm curious if there's a way to add more custom templates? =)

I'm using a portal page write now that I did in html, and I have 5 sections that I would need to add.

Thanks!

Tigga
12-04-2002, 03:20 AM
Ok, since both of those seem ok I guess it's not a problem with it querying the table, so maybe it's something with the way they are joined.

Try this query and see if it's any better...
$pollinfo=$DB_site->query_first("SELECT poll.pollid,poll.question,poll.dateline,poll.optio ns,poll.votes,poll.active,poll.numberoptions,poll. timeout,poll.multiple,poll.voters,thread.pollid,th read.open FROM poll LEFT JOIN thread USING (pollid) WHERE thread.forumid=$pollsforum ORDER BY poll.dateline DESC LIMIT 1");{

alkatraz,

I would imagine you would just change this

// Custom Boxes
$custom1='';
$custom2='';
if ($showcustom1) {
$getbgrow=getrowcolor();
eval("\$custom1 .= \"".gettemplate('index_custom1')."\";");
}
if ($showcustom2) {
$getbgrow=getrowcolor();
eval("\$custom2 .= \"".gettemplate('index_custom2')."\";");
}

to something like this...

// Custom Boxes
$custom1='';
$custom2='';
$custom3='';
$custom4='';
$custom5='';
if ($showcustom1) {
$getbgrow=getrowcolor();
eval("\$custom1 .= \"".gettemplate('index_custom1')."\";");
}
if ($showcustom2) {
$getbgrow=getrowcolor();
eval("\$custom2 .= \"".gettemplate('index_custom2')."\";");
}
if ($showcustom3) {
$getbgrow=getrowcolor();
eval("\$custom3 .= \"".gettemplate('index_custom3')."\";");
}
if ($showcustom4) {
$getbgrow=getrowcolor();
eval("\$custom4 .= \"".gettemplate('index_custom4')."\";");
}
if ($showcustom5) {
$getbgrow=getrowcolor();
eval("\$custom5 .= \"".gettemplate('index_custom5')."\";");
}

And create templates for each.

Then edit the 'index' template located under mYvBindex Templates and add $custom3, $custom4, $custom5 where ever you want the templates to be displayed.

To add more custom templates to your homepage, follow the instructions below...

Look in your myvbindex.php file look inbetween the following lines of code:
if ($showcustom2) {
$getbgrow=getrowcolor();
eval("\$custom2 = \"".gettemplate('index_custom2')."\";");
}
And:
$getbgrow=getrowcolor();
eval("dooutput(\"".gettemplate('index')."\");");

?>

In that space you can add code for it to call more custom templates. You would just add something like the following:

eval("\$custom3 = \"".gettemplate('index_custom3')."\";");

Or, if you would prefer to have the option to turn these templates on/off in the Admin CP like the first two, you would add something like this:
if ($showcustom3) {
$getbgrow=getrowcolor();
eval("\$custom3 = \"".gettemplate('index_custom3')."\";");
}

Then, only if you want to add the options to turn them on/off you would run the following queries via phpMyAdmin.

INSERT INTO setting VALUES (NULL,50,'Show Custom Template 2?','showcustom2','0','Show your second customized template.','yesno','30');

You would change the two places you see the number 2 in that query to 3, then 4, and so on for more templates. You would also need to change the last number (30) to incriment by one for each template you add (that's the part that tells it what order the option should be displayed).

The variable $custom3 in the code above can be called whatever you would like and would be what you would place in your index template to display your new custom template. Then the part index_custom3 in the above code may be renamed to whatever you would like to call your new template. Also, if you would like to be able to use the $getbgrow variable in that template to alternate between your firstaltcolor & secondaltcolor, you should add the following above that code as it is with the others.

$getbgrow=getrowcolor();

Ok... I don't see where either of these queries would make a difference, but then again I don't see why it would be taking that one so long, so it's worth a shot, right? :)

Try this one:
$pollinfo=$DB_site->query_first("SELECT thread.pollid, thread.open, poll.pollid, poll.question, poll.dateline, poll.options, poll.votes, poll.active, poll.numberoptions, poll.timeout, poll.multiple, poll.voters FROM thread LEFT JOIN poll USING (pollid) WHERE thread.forumid=$pollsforum ORDER BY thread.pollid DESC LIMIT 1");{

And if that doesn't help maybe this one:
$pollinfo=$DB_site->query_first("SELECT thread.pollid, thread.open, poll.pollid, poll.question, poll.dateline, poll.options, poll.votes, poll.active, poll.numberoptions, poll.timeout, poll.multiple, poll.voters FROM thread LEFT JOIN poll ON (thread.pollid=poll.pollid) WHERE thread.forumid=$pollsforum ORDER BY thread.pollid DESC LIMIT 1");{

Tigga
12-04-2002, 03:47 AM
Alright! All I did was basically have it call to the thread table rather than the poll table first. Don't see why that made a difference, but hey it works now. ;)

To fix the discuss this poll link just change the first part of the query to "SELECT thread.pollid, thread.open, thread.threadid," adding the thread.thredid in there. It figures I'd forget one small part when changing it. :)

Are you sure all your forum permissions are set correctly in the Permissions part under "Forums & Moderators" in your admin CP? There's no reason they should be visible to anyone that doesn't have permission to view them. Double check those settings and let me know if it's still showing them.

Thanks for the response, I had the catagory set properly and thought that the sub forums would inherit the settings, but they didn't seem to in the portal, I set all reg users to no all down the list in all the sub forums, and it worked.

While I've got you here, I have the myvbindex all set up and ready to go, but I don't understand how to make it work with the login. I have placed the file myvbindex in the root folder and renamed it to index.php, but the login goes directly to the forums/index.php??

How would you set up the cookie domain if the vbindex homepage is at www.yoursite.com and your board is it forums.yoursite.com Most likely .yoursite.com correct? What if later on I put in a second board(witha second license of course) at <u>subdomain.yoursite.com/forums/</u> and a vbindex at <u>subdomain.yoursite.com</u>, how would i set up the cookie domains for both boards and what would i put in place where it has a / for both boards?

Tony - I would think that the cookie domain should still be set to .yoursite.com, but I don't know that much about the way cookies and subdomains work. You may want to search vb.com or here for something like "cookie domian subdomain" and you can probably find a better answer.

350Chevy - I knew I should have mentioned how to do that too since it makes more sense to do it that way... All you'd do is look for this line in the threads section:
if ($showthreaddate) {
$thread['time'] = vbdate($timeformat, $thread['dateline']);
$thread['date'] = date("m-d-y", $thread['dateline']);
You would just change 'dateline' at the end of both of those lines to 'lastpost'.

Who's being rude? :)

You need to upload the myvbindex.php to the root of your site. Once you have it working the way you wish just rename your old index to something like index.bak and rename myvbindex.php to index.php. :)

Plur,

Seems a friend of mine has stumbled upon something. He's testing this mod out on his site and he noticed if you place text in the search box then press search it just takes you to the search.php page without atcually performing the search.

I've tested this on my site with the same results but see nothing wrong with the code. Are we missing something? TIA

:D

Nevermind.

Thanks to EvilLS1, he found the fix.

You need to add this

<input type="hidden" name="action" value="simplesearch">

in the index_search template. :)

RavenBeauty - If you followed the instructions and uploaded the myvbindex.php file to your server then you should be able to go to http://yoursite.com/myvbindex.php. Then after you've done that and made sure it's working correctly you would just rename it to index.php and it would of course become your homepage. If you're still having problems let me know exactly what you did and I'll help you out.

Chevy - Thanks for pointing that out. I don't use the search box on my site at the moment, so I never noticed it wasn't working correctly. I'll be sure to include that with the release of v2.1, which I will try to go ahead and finish this week.

Oh, and if anyone else has some suggestions for some new features to be added please let me know. There will be a couple of new features with 2.1, but I'm just about out of ideas. ;)

The top posters would definitely be a good add-on for the next release..

I also added a forum info box that shows total members, threads, posts, newest member, etc. (screen-shot attached).. And in the UserCP box, I added "new posts since last visit".. Those might be a good addition aswell.

BaBa - Did you upload the weather_install.php file to forums/admin folder and are you sure you're going to the right url?

EvilS1 - Not a bad idea at all. I'll most likely include that and maybe a few other stats with 2.1. Thanks for the feedback. :)

Well I'm just about done with v2.1. I still have to set all the new options so they can be turned on/off via the Admin CP, update the install file, create an update file so 2.0 users can easilly update, test and try to break it a little more, and then try the upgrade process with my personal site. After all that, it'll be ready for release here. :)

Here are some of the new features...

Forum Stats (Total members, threads, posts, newest member, top poster, and today's birthdays).
Today's event's under the calender.
Ability to allow or disable smilies and your signature per post in the news section (just as you would with a regular post).
Ability to allow or disable vB image code and HTML on your forums homepage (not affecting the settings for the forum).
Number of times a news post has been viewed and the news posts rating (if any).
Users Avatar with news posts (with no extra queries ;)).
"Show Printable Version" & "Send to Friend" features for news posts.
Fixed a couple of small bugs and cleaned the coding up a bit more.

I think that's everything I've added for now, so if anyone has any suggestions for some more features please let me know. :)

Great work.. I have a suggestion.. :)

In the Poll section how about adding the option to display how many posts are in the topic.

For example it now says: "?Discuss This Poll"

How about changing that to "?Discuss This Poll (xx Replies)"

or adding "?This Poll Has XX Replies" under it. Just a thought.

I know it's kinda nit-pickie but heck you've got everything else practically in there already! :D

Thanks Goldknight. :)

I just added the number of replies for the poll Chevy. Thanks for the idea.
It looks like I may be able to release the new version this evening. New installations are working perfectly, so now I just have to finish up the upgrade script and upgrade my own site. :)
And I'm still open for more suggestions if anyone has any other ideas before I release this.

It looks like your News Forum ID isn't set in the Admin CP. If it is already set, try saving the options so that will kind of kick it in. If that doesn't work let me know.

And thanks Mist. :D

Even if the News Forum ID is set, you may still have to save the options to make sure it's "kicked in". Did you try saving the options?

It's cool... I'll give you better instructions. :)
Just go in your Admin CP and click on vBulletin Options in the top left frame. Then Scroll all the way to the bottom where you mYvBindex options are. If you haven't already, check to see that the News Forum ID there is set. Then just click on "Save Changes" at the bottom of that page. Sometimes, even if everything appears to be set there, it won't kick in until you hit the Save button.
