View Full Version : "Commercial Hacks" forum?

Although I don't have a problem with people creating hacks and wanting some compensation for doing so, I don't think hacks which have to be paid for should be in the same forum as the general 'free for all' hacks - particularly since most users cannot afford to pay for hacks, and vB.org (which provides these forums as a free service) get nothing in return.
Would this be possible?

I agree with you to a certain extent.
I am one of the lucky ones that don't have to count every penny I spend, bu I'll be damned if I'll let someone rip me off with some third rate hack or something lame as hell. I program PHP for a living, and while I might not be a guru or anything like that, I do feel that I have enought experience to call a hack for crap when I see it. Granted, most of my professional work can not be compared to vB-code, as my daily tasks are mostly on a completely different level that this.
But still - crap is crap - and asking money for some simple stuff like creating a table, manipulating this and making sime templates to make it's appearance easy to modify, just pises me off. You-Know-Who, come back when you get hair on your genitalias, and you have enough common sence to not bash and assfsck peeps who are only critizising what they consider poor work from a genious.

My last post was obviously influenced by what happened in the vbRides - no ordinary photo album ;) (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37839).
What can I say... This dude just crossed my line...

I dont like the idea at all. If someone chooses to sell their hacks it should be from their own web site, not vB's.

Xanthine, I agree - but people will still want to post about them, and I think a 'commercial' forum would be the best place so they're not mixed in with hacks that people have generously made available for download.

Agreed - People are going to post about commercial hacks regardless, why not have a forum dedicated to them so that we do not have to sift though them when looking at the ones availible for free?

A commercial forum of some sort will be opened soon. Rules need to be worked out to keep things under control and not make it a commercialized hell, but things are being worked on. :)
Xanthine: Just like we allow advertisements for graphics service, it is only fair we do the same for hacking (since this is what this site is all about). You have an advertisement yourself and I'm sure you wouldn't want it to go away, would you? :)
Anyway, please leave vBRider alone. I've cleaned the thread and moved it to a more appropriate forum, and please don't just continue the flame war there.

could a commercial forum have the effekt, that most people will try to sell hacks and only few people put it into "general hacks" for free?

I hope not.

If for one would charge for a hack here. If I made some huge thingy that I felt needed some compensation to share, I'd do that elsewhere.
I fear that the whole community-feel will be hurt by adding a place to sell hacks.

I think the commercial hacks forum is probably going to have a negative effect on the availability of free hacks.
I am a huge believer in the free market; however, I think that to provide a forum here in which hackers have the opportunity to sell their hacks will be a huge detriment to this community. But further, it is wrong to allow them to reap the benefits of vb.org without having them invest in it.
If hackers want to charge, LET THEM PAY FOR THE SITE TO DO SO. Let them come up with their own site to hock their wares. Let them invest the time and energy to catalog them and market them. If they have a free, open forum like this to take advantage of, they will be essentially using vb.org to support their business, without any kind of payment in return.
Leave it to them. The true official hack site of vBulletin should not be subsidizing the hack-for-hire market.

Same opinion.
Firefly is right though, I have my advertisement so they should be able to have theirs.
my personal oppinion is to don't start a comercial forum. people who want to make money of it, should not use the vB.org's popularity or it's traffic to make money. period.
that's my thought. thanks for reading this post.

Just an addendum to clarify my previous post:
I think hackers should have the freedom to charge for their hacks -- although Jelsoft could prevent this (the hacks are derivitave works, made from Jelsoft's intellectual property).
However, if a hacker wants to sell his hacks, he should have to shoulder the full cost of promoting/selling/offering support for them -- and not use this forum as his place of business. Otherwise, the nature of things would lead to more pay-hacks and fewer shared hacks. That said, it would be reasonable to allow hackers to link to their commercial work in their sigs, so long as it doesn't get out of control.

In that case, should posts about commercial hacks be removed altogether?

I believe it would be fair to allow hackers to post an announcement in a specified forum. The point is not to allow the forum to become a support forum for commercial hacks.

IMO, yes.
Putting a link to your website saying 'See more hacks here' in your sig would be OK, as long as it is not overdone...

Thumbs down to this idea.

Couldn't agree more. vb.org will devolve even further into a site for selling hacks. If that's what people want, fine, but I don't think it was the intention. Open a classified ads forum and let people who hack for food, post the availability of their services if you must.
