Yes it does happen on your site too ... like I say, it doesn't stay there for my site (or your site), it's only while the page is loading, then it disappears ... so it's not a major problem. But anyway, I am using Firefox, the latest version. :)

Facebook made changes on their side that broke Facebook Connect on all VB versions before VB 4.1.7. To use Facebook Connect you now need to upgrade to at least VB 4.1.7.

All seems to be working terrifically well, except for one little thing:

When 'Liking' or 'Sending' a post - directing to Facebook - the associated image isn't picked-up from the actual article but replaced with one that's taken from - I guess - somewhere else..

For everything Facebook does right they don't pick images very well.

If you have Facebook Connect setup you can add an image for your "app" in the developer's page for the app and that image should be used.

If you don't have Facebook Connect enabled/setup then you can manually add this line line to your headinclude template.

<meta property="og:image" content="http://www.youursite.com/images/myimage.jpg" />

Where of course you replace the URL with your own URL to an image.

Unfortunately this image won't vary by thread, it will have to be the same image for all your likes- I personally use a forum logo.

Note- changes will not be immediate- facebook stores a cache of your page so it may take several days for changes to appear on a page that has already been "liked." Try it on a brand new page/thread to make sure it is working.

As of vb 4.1.8 if the forums aren't visible to the public the Facebook Like button (and by extension this mod) won't show. Theory is not to share content the public can't see.

There is an option to do the "box count" on Facebook Like if that is what you mean. If you mean make the bar look exactly like it does on Digital Point you'd have to manually edit the template I suppose to get it how you want.

Edit the "more_share_options" template- look for: en_US and change it to your language.

However that code is really only used in older VB4 versions. Newer VB4 versions this should be set by the forum itself. If this mod is disabled is your LIKE button in English or German?

There is no way to add this to additional pages at this time without a lot of additional programming.

Facebook only offers two options, and it is in the mod settings, you can choose "light" or "dark" style for all the Facebook buttons.

If you're not seeing the buttons make sure the forum you are testing in is open to guest viewing. If guests cannot view threads then vBulletin does not show the Facebook Like button. If vBulletin doesn't show the Facebook Like button, the "more share options" don't show either.

To edit the the image (the "thumbs up") easiest way would be to replace (overwrite) the image "share_like.png" (in images/misc/) with one you do want to use.

If you have to do more specific editing the code is not in a template, I never intended it to be edited- but if you want to try you need to go to the Plugin on the "parse_templates" hook and find the line:

You have to manually edit the more_share_options template to change the order of the buttons. Instructions to move the buttons are and were included in the zip file.

I've had to disable this modification unfortunately. I'm unsure why, but it seems to be causing 50+ extra queries on all pages. The specific plugin causing this to happen to me is:

Plugin: Add Share Options to Templates
Hook: process_templates_complete

After removing the following from the plugin, the 50+ extra queries disappear:
require_once(DIR . '/includes/adminfunctions_template.php');

Any ideas? It could possibly be my setup, but I'm not too sure about that.

Edit: I should note, this only started after updating to vBulletin 4.1.11. Previously my Forum was running 4.1.7 with no issues, or extra queries.

It is set to be fixed in 4.1.12.

The main issue with this bug is it doesn't allow translated phases to be used on some situations and kh99 provided a fix for that part: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=2306760&postcount=4

But it does not appear to help the query situation much. I saw mine from 76 to 72 on a 1 post thread. :eek:

Does the mod still work for you with the "require" statement removed? It was used only for adding share buttons to albums, pictures, and member profiles. I'm curious if these areas still work with it removed.

OK I believe I have a fix for the extra 50 query issue.

I know it solves the query issue on the front end, the only discussion is if it will still fix the bug that brought about this edit to begin with.

The bug only involved exporting styles when using a language other than the master language so if you don't ever do that you can use the fix without issue.

It has reduced query usage on my forum for a post from 77 to 27.

This mod is not the only one that uses adminfunctions_template.php but this fix will fix the query issue for all of them.

The fix is to edit adminfunctions_template.php in the /includes/ direcotry.'

There's a big block of code starting at line 5855 we want to put in an if condition.

If you go to addthis.com you can get your own addthis userid and add it to the mod. This will allow you to use basic analytics (you will get a report in email with recent shares and such.)

If you want to use their advanced tracking features then don't use this mod.

To edit the the image (the "thumbs up") easiest way would be to replace (overwrite) the image "share_like.png" (in images/misc/) with one you do want to use.

Downloaded the mod, uploaded everything to my server and got the mod installed. facebook connect button is appearing, but linking back to my site. Can't get the like buttons to appear anywhere. It's all set to "yes" in both the facebook options and the mods options.

I believe I'm having trouble with getting the facebook ID. I went through the process to get my ID and secret and entered them under the facebook option, but that's where I'm hitting a wall. What kind of setting up do I need to do on heroku to get this to work?

If you're not sure, disable this mod and see. The original button must show before this will work.

Make sure your forums and threads are visible to guests as well, since vbulletin won't show the code if they aren't.

The lowest version I tested this on was 4.0.8- by the error you got I'd say it's likely the mod just isn't compatible with 4.0.3. No one should be running 4.0.3 anyway. I would strongly suggest you upgrade.

Some of the buttons, like Google +1 simply cannot pass strict validation. I've looked this up before and the work-arounds suggested were extremely convoluted and not something I would bother attempting.

It's not like there's anyone out there giving cash prizes to sites that validate properly. ;)

predpriemach - I had problems with Facebook Connect this morning myself- it looked like some sort of conflict with "Add This." But it appears to be working fine now- please re-try.

Since all javascript is served from facebook, google addthis, etc... we are at the mercy of their developers- sometimes bug make it out into the wild.

Facebook Like Bug

Facebook has made changes to their javascripts. It now creates a (mostly) invisible <div> element 2000 pixels above the button location on the page. For the vast majority of users who have the Facebook Like button "above the fold" (near the top of the page where it is recommended) this safely puts the <div>'s out of view so they don't affect page navigation.

However if you use the "What's Going On Box" location on FORUMHOME then it is very possible 2000 pixels is still visible on your page.

Unfortunately there is nothing I can do, I hope Facebook will eventually fix this by maybe going to 20,000 pixels or some absurdly large number or maybe removing need for these <div>'s at all.

Anyone getting this error can check with firebug and you will see the absolute positioned <div> with a value of -2000. It has no "class" attribute so it cannot be overridden or fixed with CSS.

For now I recommend moving the position of your Share buttons on FORUMHOME to "Top Left" or "Top Right" in your settings. It is better anyway, more people will see and use it there.

The mod has two issues. One when tweeting a post we need to be able to shorten the link before the tweet. I know you said somewhere that twitter automatically shortens all links.. but this does not work. See example here: http://screencast.com/t/RYqpsgdYV You can see when I hit tweet I am told "oopps your tweet is over 140 characters"

What can I do to make links shorten, is there a way that I can add a bit.ly account to this mod where all links will be shortened through bit.ly?

Also.. my twitter counts do not work, I know you said this is a fault of twitter.. have you found any new info on this? Do you know of any mod that the twitter counts do work on?

Those issues are caused by Twitter's default share code.

If you copy the code directly from twitter and paste it directly into your SHOWTHREAD template (basically what this mod does) you will have the same issues.

I did notice Twitter added a new IFRAME option for the Tweet button. It seems to fix the count issue but the URL still doesn't shorten until after you send the Tweet.

I have not updated this mod to use the twitter IFRAME code. I'm not sure if/when I will. I have released instructions for those with the Gold version (http://www.qapla.com/mods/showthread.php/74-More-Share-Options-for-VB4-by-BOP5-GOLD?p=950&viewfull=1#post950) of the mod to take advantage of the IFRAME option since the Gold version has an option to easily add new buttons.

I think the problem is that you're writing AddThis to the page using JavaScript rather than using a standard <script> tag. We look for the profile ID in that tag, so we're not picking it up if you put it there. So you'll have to put it into your addthis_config variable. Here's a snippet you can add to your page to do it:

That's the first time I've seen that issue- I'm afraid I have no option to shorten the default text- it's coming from the page title not the mod itself. I take it shortening the forum title is out of the question.

You could edit the more_share_option template and find the first instance of this code:

and right after it, in the same line, add:
data-text="Description..."

Where you replace Description... with a short description that will be the default text for EVERY tweet. Hopefully your users enter some additional info.

First- Disable this mod and check your threads, articles, and blogs... Is the default Facebook Like button showing up? If not then this mod will never work until that issue is resolved.

You may need to enable the Facebook Like button in the Facebook Options in Settings.

You also may need to make sure your forums/threads/blogs are visible to guests. vBUlletin will not show the Facebook button on private forums and therefore this mod will not show up on private forums.

If the facebook like button is showing, enable the mod and post a link to a thread where I can see the facebook button.

So go to the Admin CP -> Settings -> Options -> Facebook Options
Make sure: Like Button - Threads is set to Yes.

If it's already Yes then your style is probably missing the button.
To test use the Default Style tempirarily just to check if it works there.

Not in this version... vBulletin doesn't load any of the sharing code- plus Facebook can't "scrape" a private forum so it can't create a proper link. That's why vBulletin doesn't show it in private forums to begin with.

It's the same steps as for everyone else...

2) If the Like Button is ON make sure the content (thread or blog) is visible to guests. vBulletin will not share any page not visible to guests because Facebook needs to scrape the page and it only scrapes public pages.

If the like button is ON and the page is public, post a link to a page where you think the button should be showing. Also disable the More Share Options mod to make sure the default vBulletin Facebook Like button shows. The default Like button needs to show else this mod won't work.

FYI- Mods can't alter the templates saved in the database. When it says an "auto template edit" it is an edit "on the fly" you never see- it happens in code only.

If you currently use More Share Options 2.61 I suggest you go to Admin CP -> Products & Plugins -> Product Manager and "Disable" the mod from the Drop Down menu.

You should then install and setup the New Mod (3.0)

If you like the way 3.0 works then go back to the Product Manager and Uninstall the 2.61 mod.

I must be doing something wrong. I installed for 4.2 PL1 and it looks ok except that the only way it will display the FB like button is if I also use the built in function to display the same button int he thread. If I disable displaying the built in thread button then the mod FB button does not display either.

Get it working, so you have two Facebook Like Buttons.

You are running VB 4.2.0?

You have a Facebook Application ID and Secret setup in Facebook Options? Basically the top of the settings look like this:

I have 4.2.pPL1 but I did not set up a facebook app ID . I didn't think I needed one for the recommend button. I will try to add the app id

The recommend and share button in your mod work fine without an app ID but only if the built in like button is displayed. If the built in like button is disabled then the recommend and share button in your mod do not display.

I will play around with it some more as I don't really want to create an app on facebook right now but I do want to make use of the share and recommend functions

The mod instructions clearly say you need an app id and the facebook platform enabled for this mod to work right.

Without the above the facebook javascript isn't put on every page, which is what is necessary since this mod puts the Like button on pages vBulletin never intended.

I suppose if you are adverse to putting in an appid you could make an edit to the more_share_tng template.

Find the line:

and change it to:

<vb:if condition="1">

That will force the FB JavaScript on every page, but it still looks for an appid... Not sure if it will work correctly without one. Worth a try though I suppose.

If it doesn't work be sure to Revert the template back to normal.

1) Twitter is shortening the links anyway

and

2) Once they reach your page there is a "canocial url" meta tag I'm sure so it will tell the search engine what the correct URL of the page should be.

I'm trying to deploy the bar manually using the provided option and edit my desired templates, I don't like the BOP5 in ALL the pages so I've edited for example SHOWTREAD inserting the code {vb:raw more_share_tng} inside as you said. The BOP bar don't show at all.

Basically it is enabled by default on ALL pages. You can specify THIS_SCRIPT values to disable on specific pages.

If you ONLY wanted it on the CMS it would probably be easier to follow the instructions for the manual template edit and simply put the code inside a template conditional- such as:

So it only appears on the CMS and you don't have to enter 20 different THIS_SCRIPT values to literally disable them on every other page.

Yes, I figured this part out. I have around 22 different ranks, which means in turn 22 different usergroups, even though only 1/2 of those are used. Let me give you an example:

My Usergroup is Admin. That is my primary usergroup.

Secondary Usergroups are: Musician, Guitar, and Vocals.

What I learned was that if I turned off permissions for secondary Usergroups, it would effect the primary Usergroup in the Mod. Maybe this could be fixed?

However, I still have one small problem. My Facebook Connect does not show when the mod is enabled, but if I disable it then it shows! I'm not sure about this, I'll double check my settings.

Updated to version 3.2.

If upgrading from below 3.2 you will have to redo the Usergroup permissions in the mod settings. I have changed it from disabling it for selected groups to enabling it for selected groups. (By default it is active for all standard usergroups except banned users (groups 1 - 7)).

Added a new plugin that will give better results when sharing custom pages via Facebook. This plugin requires a hook that was introduced in VB 4.1.10. If you are running an older version there us a new text file in the mod zip that tells you how to make 1 easy file edit if you want.

The ONLY templates it will work on are Header, Navbar, and Footer. It is not set to work in any other templates. It says that in the instructions.

You can use a template conditional to only show it in the CMS if that is your goal-

Condition to show Share Button(s) Only on Specific / Guest Viewable Forusm

This is a useful conditional if you want to hide the Facebook Like button (and all of the share buttons) in forums that aren't open to the public. If someone "Likes" a thread in a private forum people will be greeted with a no-permission "have to register" message which usually people will just get annoyed at rather than register. In fact if it's a private forum they may not even have access even after registering.

To use this conditional edit the SHOWTHREAD template... find the code:

and change it too:

<vb:if condition="$show['fb_likebutton'] AND !in_array($threadinfo['forumid'], array(3,4,5))">


Where 3,4,5 are forum id's of the forums you want to hide the button in. You can add or remove more numbers as needed so long as they are separated by commas.


Alternate location for Share Buttons

This location has been used by VB 3.x forms and was recently suggested by someone (forget who, sorry) as a good location for the Facebook button on VB 4.x.

To do this edit the SHOWTHREAD template.

Find the code:

DELETE IT.

Now find the code:

Regarding issue 1- sorry those tips are not relevant to version 3.0+ of More Share Options. I have edited that post- that was legacy stuff for the old version of the mod.'

Issue 2 - They aren't evenly spaced because there are no likes yet for Facebook or Google. Once you get 1 like for each the count boxes will show filling in the gaps. There is no way to make them evenly spaced and keep the counts. If you disable the count for the Google button then it will have better spacing but you'll never see the count.

There's no way to disable the count for Facebook, it will need that room regardless.'

Facebook only offers 2 options for the button, light or dark. The colors never change.

They do this for consistent branding. Even if it was technically possible to change colors, which I don't believe it is, part of their Terms or Service is you will not modify their buttons in any way.

There are a lot of scripts related to pages that I don't want to display on and I always seem to be coming across more.

private, usercp, profile, faq, search, misc, group, showgroups, subscription, online, calendar, memberlist, activity + any mods you don't want it to appear on, etc.

I think overall it would be easier (at least for me) to keep track of which scripts/pages it displays on than which scripts I don't want it to display on.

What you have so far is useful, though. Do we have a list of all the scripts we should block that could be copy and pasted in?

Basically I want it to work in Blogs, Threads, Forums and my add-ons. Probably everything else I want to block.

You're using the old and unsupported version.... The current version is in the file: More Share Options TNG FREE (v 3.2) by BOP5.zip and that is the one described in the first post now.

The version you are using does not work well on custom styles, it would probably work on the default style.

Thank you, installed and works great. Another question, is there any way when I tweet a topic from my forum that it will automatically change the title of the tweet to the title of the topic. Currently the title is always the name of the forumhome/website.

It will post a link to the post with the post title. If you select it on the forum home page it is like saying that you liked the forum and has a link to the forum and not a post on the forum.

On my forum sharing a thread share the title of the thread, not the forum name.

Twitter should be picking up the title from the <title> tag in the HTML page, can you post a link to a thread on your site so I can see it?

I think you'll have to edit the Navbar template for that.

I'd like the extra buttons to appear along side the default vB 4.2 Facebook Like location. But I think that's too difficult if you also want it to appear on a bunch of other pages besides threads and blogs.

It was easy actually, I just had to remove the default styling and add my own and it fits nicely. Still playing with it on the test site though.

The second one. You can only like something one time, so you want your users to like it as well. This will help your forum get more exposure from you users friends.

Edit: Looks like it will count them on different browsers without the FB Connect enabled. On the subject, is there a benefit to enabling the FB connect?

No, if they are going to use any of the options it will ask them to sign in at FB, Twitter, etc. If they don't have an account they have the option to create one.

You have to look at it a couple of ways. First if they did not use FB connect, then FB doesn't know who is selecting the recommend so a small window opens one time. After they are signed in Vb and FB knows who the user is. They have to want to select that they like it.

A good thing to do is at the top of your sig place a comment like, "If you liked this post please recommend us to FB or Twitter!" You use this kind of mod to help draw attention to your forum. It doesn't mean all users will use it.

For best sharing results the Facebook Platform must be enabled and you must have a Facebook App ID entered in your Facebook Settings:

Admin CP -> Settings -> Options -> Facebook Options

If you do not have the above settings enabled/filled in then the open graph data Facebook needs will not be provided by vBulletin. Facebook will still try to gather the required information from your page so the share should still work but it is not ideal.

Is there a guide floating around here for Facebook? I'm a social/FB newbie and this is all alien to me. My forum isn't really a business, I'm not sure if that matters though.

There may be a few that could really tell you step by step, but that may be difficult as well. Most of it is pretty self explanatory but FB is constantly changing. I'm new to it as well. I''ve searched for how to do's for facebook and the site has changed again.

Basically keep your personal site simple and open for public view. You will need to get an application for VBulletin that will give you your FB key. After that I would still make a social page about what you do on your forum. There will be a link from your personal page to the new page you created. That is a good place to also post announcements, specials, offers etc..

Just jump in head first and and doggy paddle until you get a feel for it. You wl be asked to create friends and get your page looking nice. I would try to keep content limited. Post articles from your forum as well as posts. As you increase your online friends they are given updates every few days.

Even with just a forum, you can recommend certain threads that may be a good read for people interested in skiing! I'm an armature but love to ski. I can name some bad places (for beginners) and a couple of great places. The most fun I had was in Taos NM. Not Angle Fire, that's beginners, but the Outback in Taos was for an armature very difficult. Greens are blues, blues are blacks, and blacks were yellow! The yellows were crazy! Think they spent more time in the air then on the snow!!

Small world, I was just down in Taos and did ziplining at Angel Fire a few weeks ago :) I'm just north in Denver.

There's a recommend button for FB, should I be using that or the Like button? I've only ever seen Like so that's what I've got it set to now.

I haven't ever done any zip lining. Looks like fun if you are high enough to really scare the crap out of you!

I just use this mod and I also use another mod that I like. I use both in case someone doesn't see the one on top, I also have one on the side of the page. I also use the vB facebook for people to connect. I don't need anything else!

I noticed this too on my test site and I PM'd Joe on his site last night. I actually started a new test site that's an exact copy of the live site and the problem only persists on the test site. The FB Like button still works on the live site for some reason. Best I can find is that some embedded CSS that draws from the FB site isn't getting embedded on the test site for some reason.

Some of those would depend on if guests can access those pages on your site- for example some people may want to share calendars.

Also note- there is special code in the mod to handle the "search" script. Anyone who shares a "search" page will actually create a share to the main forum URL instead.

I had both entered and then just deleted both and it's still doing it. I PM'd you on Qapla with more info last night. It's weird that it only exhibits this behavior on some pages and not others when the template is the same.

When I view the HTML source of the page and search for say twitter.com I see the code around the twitter button is using <table> HTML tags but the TNG version uses only <DIV> tags.
