The purpose of this mod is to automatically turn keywords or phrases you specify into links. You set a list of keywords and a list of URLs to link them to and let the mod do the rest.

This is the FREE Version. It allows you to auto-link words in:

There are many options as you can see in the screenshot. You can choose to include the "nofollow" attribute, choose to open links in a new tab, choose to match whole words only or not, specify specific forums, enable in social groups and visitor messages, and disable completely for selected usergroups or styles.

Example... If someone types:

"I bought it on Amazon."

This mod can auto convert it to:

"I bought it on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com)."

And you would presumably put your Amazon affiliate code, if you had one, in the link.

NOTE: This mod does not alter the actual posts or the database. Disabling or uninstalling the mod will remove all links.

There is a VB3 (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=263700) and VB4 version of this mod, please download the correct version.

Notice:
Since the following words are used in HTML tags I would avoid them as keywords:
style, div, class, pre, href, img, html, meta, name, rel, nofollow, and link.

I would also avoid any single letter or two letter keywords since they could easily be used accidentally in places you weren't intending.

For me its great mod, but if You want do more options I have some sugestions:
-limit for link in one post (or thread if its posibble) - too many links is not good for seo
-limit for using one phrase i one post/topic - then more phrases will be using
-You can add some text about SEO, internal linking in description of the mod on vbulletin.org forum - more poeple will be install this :)

ex.: internal linking is very important - wikipedia have strong seo because have good internal linking :)

Limiting to 1 link per post should be fairly easy I will try and get an update soon.

For your second suggestion- not sure I follow- are you saying to scan the post for all keywords and then only link the keyword that is used the most in that post?

As for SEO benefits I'm happy to see it discussed in this thread but my goal was to make a mod for people who wanted it, not to convince people they needed it- that's up to them. :)

The number of keyword replaces seems not to work. Tried 1 or 2 replaces but all keywords (3 times) were replaced...

Another little question perhaps you make it case sensitive?

Because the first word in a sentence is written in big letters for example, but the word in a senctence is written in small letters:
"The school is over! So the pupil are on the way home."
If I now want to replace "the" with "<a hre="/">the</a>" it will be:
"<a hre="/">the</a> school is over! So <a hre="/">the</a> pupil are on <a hre="/">the</a> way home."
So the first word is now written in small letters...

1) It's 1 match per keyword. If your keywords are red, blue, green and your limit is 1, the sentence: "I like red, blue, and green." will still see 3 links. The sentence "I have a red hat, a red coat, and red shoes." will have only 1 link.

2) I can probably get it to match the case of the word it was linking, keeping the original case format. It would still be case insensitive when finding words. Actually I can make that an option too.

Mostly because putting the class in the a tag didn't work in my test. Does it work for you? :confused:

1) Is the limitation per post or page? Tried it with several posts on one page. Not with the same word mulitple in one post.

2) The solution with the original case format would propably be the best.

3) Normally it should work. Will try it later on.

Thanks to fishmaster I found a conflict with VBSEO. I have uploaded a new version 0.935 to fix this conflict. If you were having problems with the mod not working at all I suggest you upgrade to 0.935 whether you run VBSEO or not.

If you use xcache or other caching software it may take several minutes for the affects of the mod to show up. Turn it on and wait 5 to 10 minutes if you don't see the links immediately- they will come eventually.

I hear you on the span tags... for now you can, and probably have, remove(d) them from the plugin code by changing the line:

to:

$boplink = '<a href="'.trim($boplink).'"' . $boptarg . $bopnofollow . ' >$1</a>';

In all 3 plugins.

I don't have any statistics but it's fair to say the longer a post is and the more keywords you have the bigger affect on performance it will be. At what point it may become noticeable I don't know.

The bulk of the work here is being done by php's preg_replace function if that means anything to you.

Few suggestions:

1) Most important, if you could make it that every word/phrase and it's link is in one row on it's own special page.

So we make it something like this:

Link word or phrase - http://link.to.some.website/

It would make it much more easier to manage words/phrases and belonging links when we have more links. And we all will. :)

2. Make this page available through front end to chosen usergroups (admins of course), or maybe even to certain users. It's much easier to do some things without need to go to admincp. And I could give task of entering word-links to someone who isn't admin.

3. Add ability to set description of link (title="link description"), so we could inform users where this links leads to. It's excellent for advertising purposes, we could sell words etc.

I'd like to see it in same line with other links info:

Link word or phrase - http://link.to.some.website/ - link description

4. Ability to time expire word links. If we sell someone word link, it would be much easier that they expire automatically. Of course, everything would be in same line:

Link word or phrase - http://link.to.some.website/ - link description - expiration date

I hope that you could make at least suggestions 1,3 and 4. Not sure but I think they are relatively easy to implement. It would make this mod really great.

1 and 3 I can certainly consider... 2 isn't my thing, it would far complicate things, sorry. 4 I will consider too, would be possible but you wouldn't want too many expired words to get stuck in the list, it would start to affect performance eventually- It's really better to just remove them manually. But I'll see what I can do.

Automatically expiring links makes things easier, I certainly would like to see it and I can prune it afterwards. This mode affect the bbcodes (all bbcodes) .
For bbcode [code] , [php] , [htm], etc -> you'll see this:

style="height:THE-SIZEpx;"> -- instead "THE-SIZE" you'll find the number

Great you got it working. In testing I find styles (with an s at the end) should also work. "style" however will cause this problem.

the plugin will mess this up. makingthe url not working at all and putting html code.

1.) To upgrade import the product xml file as normal but choose "allow overwrite" to be "yes." This should usually keep your settings. HOWEVER if you really have a lot of keywords I would copy and paste them into a text file and save it just in case, you could always copy and paste the settings back.

2.) I am trying to reproduce the issue but it's working fine for me... can you tell me what 'xxx' is for you, it may be one of the few words that are part of HTML and won't work. I thought I got them all in a previous post but I may have missed some.

the word is ubot, so no its not any of them.

Makes AME3 unusable, eg. wont convert links to vids. Disabled and ame works fine. Mod disabled for the time being.

It should only interfere with AME if a keyword is used in the AME URL... Is it interfering with all your AME links?

I don't have AME 3 installed... honestly I didn't even know AME 3 was working- last time I visited the thread it looked like a new version of VB 4.x broke it.

Now I take what I said back... I just installed AME 3 on my test board and had no issues.

I see... my VB4 site I'm using the newer HTML5 YouTube code that doesn't use flash (shockwave) code at all. Would you consider upgrading to the HTML5 youtube embedding? It will let your mobile users be able to watch YouTube videos on devices that don't support flash (all apple and some android devices).

I know there is a spot in AME3 to change the definitions too but I think the mod ignores that if vbulletin has a built in definition because I didn't change the built in flash in AME3 but my site is still using the HTML5 I set per the thread I linked to.

Updated to version 1.0 - Stable Release!

Thank you all for your help beta testing this mod the last few weeks. I am now confident it is stable and ready for official release. I have just uploaded a new version 1.0.

There are no new features over the last Beta but I have added additional code to prevent unintended linking. (Links that are part of HTML elements and not actual words.)

Although I'm sure we will get the occasional report of a word not being compatible I think for the most part as is it should work for most people most of the time.

If you encounter an unintended link you can remove the keyword and let me know here until I can find a fix.

yeah my only problem with this is that let's say I link the word Play (a game store online) with Play.com

Whenever a word contains the char 'play', it links it making the whole word awkward...get what I'm saying?

There's several options:

Make "Play.com" it's own keyword, put it above the "Play" keyword in settings and it will link the entire word.

Set "Match Whole Words Only" to YES. (But in the particular case of Play.com it probably still will only match "Play" because the period (.) is considered an end-of-word character. Not a bug in the program but just the way php works.

Use custom CSS to make the links look less different than standard text until someone actually mouseover's the link.

A better alternative for Skimlinks. :p

I have 2 suggestions:
1. If you have a lot of Links it might be difficult to change one, you have to count the Lines in two boxes.

2. It bis good for internal linking an external (Ads) linking. But if possible i like to set this 2 Groups different.
Internal: follow and same Tab/Window
External: nofollow an new Tab window.

It might be good to have 4 Boxes (2 for internal Liks and 2 for external Links)

Or have one 1 Box with Parameters:
ex:

Word|Link|0|1 Parameter: 0=follow, 1=nofollow and 0= same Window, 1=new Window ore something like this.

Those are good ideas Christian, the single box idea has been mentioned before. I'm trying to find a way to make entering it easier.

In the mean time I am updating this mod to version 1.1 which allows for an approximate maximum links per page.

Updated to version 1.1.

You can now set *an approximate* number of total max links per page.

It is approximate because the mod will make links until it reaches the end of the post, VM, or social group message where it meets the page max number of links.

Just to expand on what CThieseen is saying, he installed two copies of the mod, 1 for internal links one for external links. (So he can specify new window or not for each)

To do this install the 1st copy as normal.

Now open the XML product file.

With your text editor do a "search and replace"

Replace all instances of "bop" with "bob" (or whatever you want really)

Save the XML file (with a different name)

And Import the new XML file. It will be a second copy of the same mod.

This *should* work if you really need to treat internal and external links differently but I have NOT tested this and can't support people who install it this way.

Big update today... Two new features.

1) For those of you with a lot of keywords and links it's hard to keep track of which keyword goes to which link in the two separate boxes you can now put all your keywords and links together in one .csv (comma separate value) data file and upload it and the mod will pull its info from the data file instead of the two boxes.

In addition you can use advanced features if using the datafile such as setting the "target" and "rel" attributes for each link individually if you choose. If you don't specify a target or a rel value the mod will use whatever setting you have chosen in the mod settings.

A sample datafile is included and an example is here:

For those wondering about performance when using the data file- in my test with almost 100 keywords and 200 links in a post the page generation on VB 4.0.8 was at most 2/100th of a second more when using the data file as opposed to the internal settings.

I don't have VBSEO so I can't test it. I would try it and see what happens. Unless you used the same keyword as an acronym I don't think there would be a problem.

Honestly I don't know what the SEO benefit is that's why I didn't mention any SEO benefit in the main post. I made this so people could include affiliate links to bring in some money when people buy stuff by following these links mostly. SEO benefit, if any, is secondary.

You are correct this mod would not work for that.

You could try the "replacement variable manager" in your style manager- that will override any text with any other text, so you could change all instances of:

www.amazon.com

to

www.ebay.com

very easily. However it will run into problems if you have a link like:

www.amazon.com/product1/

which will change it to

www.ebay.com/product1/

which may not be a valid link.

It's either going to be a lot of time entering every possible link with a custom replacement or a high risk of broken links.

IE: I post "Salinity is high" (Salinity is the word to be linked)
It shows as "is high"

Really you would want to use this mod in combination with Skimlinks and possibly disable skimwords.

I am using it with skimlinks myself.

This mod is kind of like a local version of "Skimwords" but you have 100% control over which words are linked, and where they are linked to, and how many are linked per post or page.

Skimwords in my experience just offers you a few options and a lot of times it doesn't seem to link relevant words at all.

Plus any links Word Links make will still be counted by Skimlinks so if a user follows it from your site you will get affiliate credit.

I'm not saying this is better or worse than skimwords, it is a personal preference which you prefer. You can use both, I haven't seen any conflicts. This is just a different way of doing things.

You can definitely do this if you upload a .csv file & you can apply it to individual links. I don't think there's an option in the basic settings.

It will appear at the bottom of your vBulletin Options after all the standard vB settings as 'Word Links by BOP5'. All of the settings for my other plugins seems to appear there in the order I installed them.

As explained this is something that can be set in the options. Admin CP -> Settings -> Options -> Word Links by BOP5 (near the bottom but not always at the bottom.)

In the options you can set new window or same window for all links. If you setup a csv file you can specify for individual links.

If not a fairly easy edit of the plugin code would do... If so it just isn't possible without some significant editing of the mod.

Word Links FREE 2.0 Released!

Happy to announce the release of Word Links Free 2.0-
I have improved the efficiency of the code by putting the main function into one external php file.

I have added a new option to disable in specific styles.

I have made usergroup and forum selections easier (now point and click, no need to look up id numbers.)

I have added unique phrases for the auto-link notices to differentiate between posts and messages.

I have also released a new GOLD version which works in even more places. See the first/top thread for details.

If you're happy with the older 1.6 version and don't need the new features feel free to continue using it- I wouldn't expect any functional difference.

But if you do upgrade be aware there is now a php file that needs to be uploaded to your /includes/ directory and you should re-check your options/settings as some have changed.

No you will not have to re-enter your sites if you upgrade. Don't uninstall the mod, just follow the upgrade instructions and it will be fine.

Is there any known conflict between this mod and [DBTech] Advanced @User Tagging v2 (vB4) (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=242733)? We'd intended to use the Word Links added to make automatic links to our Bulbapedia wiki, mostly for character & Pok?mon names. But at the same time, we've also got a lot of forum users who've incorporated those character & Pok?mon names into their forum usernames. Seems like both addons would be going for the same words quite frequently, and I'm not sure how they'd handle that conflict.

This mod should ignore any text in a link and if it doesn't it can probably be quickly fixed by editing the "custom regex" setting on the mod.

I know of no known conflicts, but if you find one simply disabling the mod will undo any changes- no changes are made to the database.

Looks like you are trying to force Amazon referral credits. It's a good idea but something that simple might backfire- what if "ref" is used on a non-amazon link?

That said vBulletin has a built in "Replacement Variable Manager" in Admin CP -> Styles & Templates -> Replacement Variable Manager.

You set that per style and you could set it up to replace /ref= with whatever you want.

I don't know why you would use a "redirect" - these just make everyday links just the same as if whoever wrote the post included the links themselves- although the mod gives an option if you want "nofollow" or not.

Actually yes you can do a work around in that way. You would need to add a custom BB Code, say call it: [nolink]

The code for the bb code would be:
<c>{param}</c>


And then in the word link settings add the following to the very end of the Custom Regex setting:

</c>|


That will tell the mod not to link any word between <c> tags, and since <c> isn't used by HTML your browser will just ignore them.

Not sure why yet, but if you use the CSV file, the last line is ignored.
Workaround... put a dummy last line.

Edit: I had a malformed line in the file with an extra ,
This code caused the problem (well sort of)

One more question. I've got a keyword that i need to link that is basically a three letter abbreviation. Unfortunately, it is also a set of letters that commonly appear in other words. Is there a way I can cause them to auto-link when they are standing alone (surrounded by spaces) but now when found inside another word. I tried adding a space before and after the 3 letters in my word list but it didn't make any difference.
