I'd like to place the Friends Activity Widget (vbcms_searchresult_visitormessage) on the user's profile page. How can I configure a widget's template so that it will work in the forum sections.

vBulletin Version: 4.0.8

Check the vB4 articles section. I believe there is an article on how to use a widget on any page.
