it's possible to have the same things for that page
http://www.latriade.net/forum/misc.php3?s=&action=showavatars
e.g selection of category and only XX avatars show per page
I'm not sure whether I got the instructions right:
If admin/index.php and member.php are already modified from previous hacks, will this cause any trouble?
If the two templates headinclude and modifyoptions are already edited how can I apply the changes without loosing those edits?

Small idea, how about allowing sub Categories. IE categories of Street Fighter, then a link to Male/Female/All

you mean like you almost done one with actuall catigories? like when they edit avatar insted of showing 50 per page, there in sections, and you like click into them, ect?
(excuse my spelling)

Lordmusic

That's the plan. A drop down menu where you can select the sections.
However I suggest adding sub Categories.
You click on a selection, but then there is a link to more sections within the subject.
Like say you select star wars. Then it shows you a page that has links to people, bots, weapons... Stuff like that. Making stuff ever so sorted :)
Very cool, can't wait.
Got 2 questions, you don't have to answer em'
A) Will I be able to upgarde from THIS hack?
B) When ya think ya will have it? Week?
Thanks!

Great hack, this is one that should definately be included with vB. I have wanted something like this for a long time. I can't wait to see what else you come up with. Also looking forward to the show avatars addition to it when you get it done.

Wow! Impressive hack!
I am experiencing one issue though (although it's not mission critical it still is a concern) and that's within the control panel itself.
When I go to modify a particular category of avatars, it does list the avatars and everything just fine, however, at the top of the screen on EVERY category I get the same message:
Warning: Supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/hohavoc/public_html/vbPortal/forums/admin/db_mysql.php on line 154
if ( isset($this->query_id) ) {
line 154: $this->record = mysql_fetch_array($this->query_id);
} else {
if ( !empty($query_string) ) {
$this->halt("Invalid query id (".$this->query_id.") on this query: $query_string");
} else {
$this->halt("Invalid query id ".$this->query_id." specified");
}
}
Any idea what this means??
I'm using the latest mysql, php, apache and linux kernel on our host.
v 2.0.3 of jelsoft's bulletin board.

I know it's a dumb question but I got lost between your two posts Bad_Madman
so now we have two files to download one is
avatar_hack.zip
and the other one is
automatic_install.zip
so what exactly we are supposed to do
follow the instruction in the first zip or just upload the files in second zip file and use the sqltodos.php and then run the avatar_hack_install.php
please if it's possible clearify this :)

I don't know :confused: But I assume that the Script to writing does not have sufficient rights. Make the forums folder and the forums/admin folder 777 chmod. PHP required to have permission to write files to disk. If they do not have the neccessary permissions, it will fail.

I'm terribly confused. :(
I installed the hack and while I can define categories in Admin just fine, when I go to change the avatar in my user CP, I don't get any sort of drop down menu of any sort.
I have followed the instructions PERFECTLY. So I don't understand what's wrong.
:(
Is there SUPPOSED to be a category drop down menu?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Okay, well I got the dropdown list to work (I think) however I had to go into the "modifyavatar" template and replace $avatcategorie with the contents of the view_avatarcategories template.
Why did I have to do this? What does the $avatcategorie variable call and why did it seem to completely ignore whatever it was supposed to do?
Will replacing it with the contents of the view_avatarcategories template cause any harm?
Thanks in advance.
Okay, I figured out what the problem was.
$avatcategorie is pulling up the template for view_avatarcategoriesdis instead of view_avatarcategories for some reason. I cannot figure out why.
In the PHP code it states the avatarcategoriesdis template will be called when, "$totalavatars=$totalavatars2" however I can't understand for the life of me WHY this isn't working for me or why the "totalavatars" and "totalavatars2" are equal to one another.
Is there something I'm not doing right? Please help
Thanks.

Okay, then the question remains, I guess . . . .
How do I activate the categories?
I have three so far . . . I don't see any option to "activate"
How would I go about doing that?
Thanks.
Oh!!
I got it. I had to go into options and select Yes for "Show up avatar categories" which for some reason was turned off.

I'm using v2.0.3, and yes, I installed at least a dozen hacks.
But I'm not sure if it's this hack's fault, maybe something in the PHP configuration that got changed. Someone in the troubleshooting area is checking this now.
Thanks anyway. :)

Is there any way you can add so that each category can have different user titles?
This way Star Wars Male could have male titles like Han Solo etc
and Star Wars Female could have like Princess Leia?
Thank you :) this works great and will make it easier on me and my users to find a icon.

Razor,
Have you checked to make sure you didn't make the mistake I made?
Go click on Options under Avatars / Categories then make sure you have "Show up avatar categories" set to "Yes"
If that isn't the problem, hopefully another kind person here will be able to help. :)

Ok, got it installed, but now I have another problem.
Since I installed the hack, the custom avatars don't seem to work. It will let you enter a URL or upload the avatar, but the avatar itself never actually displays (the picture isn't being found wherever its trying to look). Any suggestions?

Here is the generated HTML, if it helps:
<font face="verdana, arial, helvetica" size="2" ><b>My Name</b></font><br>
<font face="verdana,arial,helvetica" size="1" >My Title</font><br>
<img src="avatar.php?userid=1&dateline=998615847" border="0" alt=""><p>
Is this the way it should be? HTML for the avatars added normally comes out like this:
<font face="verdana,arial,helvetica" size="1" >Royal Advisor</font><br>
<img src="images/avatars/Human Males/Human Male 064.jpg" border="0" alt=""><p>

erm..excuse me for being stupid - but where is this template? Me using 2.0.3. I ran sqltodos.php and this has made changes to the avatar control page - but I can't add new avatar categories at the moment. Is this because I need to complete the rest of the installation?

Thanks for that pointer - now carried out all the changes in the .txt apart from the ones marked 'CSS/Jump menu only'.
I still have the situation as yesterday though, that clicking 'modify' in the Avatars/Categories section takes me to what appears the right page .. then I click through to the uncategorised Avatars, and that's fine too .. but there's a text 'link' near the bottom that says 'New Avatar Category'. This isn't in fact a link and clicking it does nothing. I need to reate new categories in order to put my avatars in them, so any idea how I can fix this or why that link isn't working?
Thanks!

I got an interesting error. I can change the categories and everything via admin and all looks good, it's just I had Keir's custom avatars as files hack installed and somehow with this I get this error.
I have since upgraded to 2.0.3 and install this hack having Keir's previously installed. I don't have any of the old files with Keir?s code in there, but I think his install made me do stuff to the SQL. Incidentally I can no longer allow my users (or myself) to change avatars. As they hit the button Change Avatar, they get a blank page. I can still change their avatars via the control panel by manually finding their name, but that is it. There has to be a relation somewhere. Please help.
www.magi-forums.com is the forum?s url.
I've installed the hack, today and I do not see the catagorie when I go to change my avatar. I have modified and changed everything on the admin side of this hack but my users cannot change their avatars from their user cps. How can I fix this?

Ok. Delete please manually with phpMyAdmin the 3 entries in the table 'settings':
-varname='avataroptions' and
-varname='avatarpermissions' and
-varname='avatarselect1'
Start afterwards the file sqltodos.php again.

Also no entry 'avataroptions' (in table 'setting' - not 'settings' - sorry)? This is checked in the script 'sqltodos.php'. If it exists then the script outputs that all tables would be already created ('Tables, fields and records in SQL-Database exists already...').
If this entry in the table 'setting' is available (and that would have it), then please also times to delete.

Not sure what you are saying or asking but in the database "setting" there are these fields:
Database vforums - table setting
settingid
settinggroupid
title
varname
value
description
optioncode
displayorder
That is all.

If I incomprehensibly write then excuse please.
I mean: does in the table 'setting' an entry with the varname 'avataroptions' exist?
If this entry exists, delete then please.
Normally this entry must exist in your SQL-DB, since the Script outputs the message 'Tables, fields and records in SQL-Database exists already...'. Because the script 'sqltodos.php' seeks to check in the SQLDB only after this entry over whether the necessary modifications (for the avatar-hack) were already executed to the SQLDB.

There I am rather helpless. If you get the message 'Tables, fields and records in SQL-Database exists already...', then also the varname 'avataroptions' would have to exist.
Did you already try the fixed Script http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=166776#post166776 (with test output)? With this also the error should be fixed ('page not found'). Otherwise I have no more advice.

Never run auto_installs! always hand code it.. lol..
I ran the auto_install, and that just made the hand coding a wee harder, when the auto install failed with about 60% of the things
it was supposed to do... ;(
Because then you have to figure out what the auto-install did,
and then what you need to do.. (hehe)
Anyhow was very easy to setup and works great so far..

The problem with auto install, is you would first have to give
the correct permissions to the files (777)..... :)
It did most everything but edit the files themself..
EX: It handled the MySQL end, and the template edits..
But did not edit the .php files.

2.
maketableheader("Edit Avatar:</b><i> $avatar[title]</i><img align=\"absmiddle\" src=\"../$avatar[avatarpath]\">","",0);
3.

Occurs with all avatars or only with certain avatars?
Did you upload the avatars in the CP (CP -> Avatars / Categories -> Modify -> add/upload -> Upload New Avatar) or beforehand by ftp did upload and then added in CP (CP -> Avatars / Categories -> Modify -> add/upload -> Add a single/multiple avatars)?
The red-marked lines are by the way ok. That is because of the fact that it is not a HTML code and your program cannot interpret other code (for example Perl or PHP) probably.
Hi! Thanks for answering. I tried uploading both ways. It happens with all of them. Does it recognize them as pictures, or as files? I saw that question asked earlier in the thread. I don't have that hack, in case you were wondering. Which way is best to attach the avatars, by the way?

You must hack 'avatars as files' specially to install, if you liked to have this functionality (avatars as files). I have so far however no information about whether hack 'avatars as files' with mine hack worked.

Anyone got this to work with 2.20 yet? I have a weird issue. It installed fine, control panel works fine, I add catagories, then avatars to them (via the mass add from a folder), but then, when you go to change avatars, the catagories show up just fine BUT it won't switch pages. I.e. when you switch to say, Sci-Fi, it doesn't show the avatars available in that catagorie, just the same default ones.
I've gone through and re-checked and re-done permissions. Any ideas? Feel free to register on my board and check it out.
Thanks!
UPDATE
Thought I would add some more info:
I've tried it with and without the cascading style sheets mods
Avatar cats are turned on in the cp (remember, the catagorie selection does show up)
Avatar permissions - tried on and off
Still no go. When I choose a catagorie from the drop-down menu, the page refreshes but the same default avatars come up. It's not reading the image folders for some reason (I do have images for each catagory in their own folder under images/avatars/ )

Mine's doing the same thing ixian. I just registered on your board to take a peek.
I am relatively sure the problem is in the query that pulls up the avatars. I am going to play around with it a bit and see if I can't get it working.
I am not guaranteeing that I will be able to fix it today or any time soon. I'm too tired to think straight and have a lot of work that I should be doing. :(

Keep your money. :) Mine is fixed. Here's how I fixed it.
I took a fresh copy of member.php and reapplied the hack. This time, I did not use the css navigation.
It just required me to be a bit more awake and careful.

Ok, I had this had in 2.0.3, well I had to do alot of work.. but it sems to be working again (but) It is not switching to the category when it is selected from the drop down (when they goto modify avatar)...
Any Ideas? :)

I had the exact same problem. You need to do what I did - start over with a fresh copy of members.php and DON'T use any of the css stuff. It worked like a charm.

Thanks, "It worked like a charm" :D
So you guys are running it on 2.2? Good if so, but which download do I get..? Is the first one still ok or should I get the one back a page or two..? :confused: Thanks!
Edit* Well I went on by myself and installed the hack from a few pages back.. Problem is, I don't see thet pull down to select catagories. I didn't use the CSS or the jump like I read from previous posts... can anyone help me?

Did you add the db entries? I don't think that was in the modified one.
I dunno.. I ran sqltodos.php ...? What else was there..?
**Edit - I don;t think I edited any of the templates except the one in the install.txt ..... There are other text files in the zip I didn't touch those. Could someone walk me through it or something..?

Hello ...
vb 2.2.1
can't find this in index.php

>>> Search for:

<a href="avatar.php?s=<?php echo $session[sessionhash]; ?>&action=upload"> Upload </a> |
<a href="avatar.php?s=<?php echo $session[sessionhash]; ?>&action=add"> Add </a> |
<a href="avatar.php?s=<?php echo $session[sessionhash]; ?>&action=modify"> Modify </a>

what can i do for that ?

I'm having the same problem :) Any help would be much appreciated!
This may be the pertinent code that I see in my file (?): (I'm a newbie, so please ignore anything I say that's really stupid!)
makenavoption("Add","avatar.php?action=add","|");
makenavoption("Modify","avatar.php?action=modify","|");
makenavoption("Upload","avatar.php?action=upload");
makenavselect("Avatars");
Edit:
I think I got it!
For You, try using the instructions/download that Syphin posted here:

This hack had been working fine for weeks, but now I have some major problems. I added some avatars last night, and then when I tried to do more this morning, I got this error:
Database error in vBulletin Control Panel 2.2.1:
Invalid SQL: INSERT INTO avatar (title,minimumposts,avatarpath,avatarcat) VALUES

So, I checked over the files and I've been having a problem with the last few lines of my files being cut off, and my member.php was like that, so I added the missing lines and uploaded in ASCII.
Now, when I even go to my main page, I get this error:
Database error in vBulletin 2.2.1:
Invalid SQL: SELECT user.avatarid,avatarpath,avatarrevision,NOT ISNULL(avatardata) AS hascustom,customavatar.dateline

Does anyone know what this 'avatar.MYD' file is?
Sadie Frost
12-28-2001, 07:18 PM
Well, I ran admin/repair.php which (or so it says) repaired the avatar table.
But I got this from it:
Checking table template:
Table Operation Type Text
britpack.template check status OK
Optimizing table template:
template optimize error 28 when writing to datafile
britpack.template optimize status Operation failed
Now the problem is that I'm now getting this error:
"There seems to have been a slight problem with the database."
without any specifics on what the problem is. And where I could before get into my admin cp, I now can't.
Arrrggghhhh!
EDIT: Okay, it is the template.myd that's causing the problem. Anyone know how I can manually re-create that table?

I don?t can define ANY categories! There is just no option for it!
I used the css version (normaly CSS works for me (IE 6.0.2600))
What?s the problem or do I missed the solution by flying over the replys??

Could somebody redo this hack (no offense) for v 2.21. I installed it last night, then uninstalled it, and installed it again. Same thing as StarBuG. I can't define any catagories, and in the user CP where they pick an avatar, there isn't a dropdown box or anything.
This is a great feature, but it doesn't work for 2.21, which I think a lot of people are using.
Thanks.
It works perfectly well for 2.21 providing you follow all the instructions.
A common mistake that is made is that some don't add the new templates which come in the .txt files. As long as you add all of those and have followed everything properly it will work :)

With a little help from Matt (a lot) I've rewritten the install file for v2.21 of vB. I did this for a friend of mine, and deleted all CSS-Navigation instructions so I wouldn't confuse them. All you really need from this new version is the admin/index.php changes. After that it's the same as before. So if you use CSS-Nav, use my version up to admin/index.php, and after that the regular one.
Hope this helps. IM me if you need help (names at the bottom of the file). Credit DEFINITELY goes to Matt and Bad Madman. Thanks. This works fine on my boards (coming soon).

I used your "new" install File (the only change you made is that you translated the admin/index link in new 2.2.1 code right?)
AND the problem is still the same!
In the Admin Panel I can´t create any Categories cause there is no option!
See the screenshot

Checking what Matt did for me. He edited something in the Options link on the CP.
Click the Options link, the on the two column list, click avatars (or scroll down) and make sure the Show Up Avatars Catagories is clicked yes, and Show Up Not Catagorized Catagories is yes, and Avatar Catagories Permissions is no. See if that helps. Checking for more.

Matt, what all did you change from what I had uploaded? That way if I need to install this again for some reason, or help a friend I can. Thanks. I noticed you exported something in tbs.php (template backup system). What was that?
LOL! I didn't change a single thing you just hadn't followed the instructions properly ;)
The only thing we changed was the code you replace in admin/index.php to update it for 2.2.1 :D
Smallville
01-14-2002, 12:51 AM
Oh. LOL
Why did you need to go into the tbs.php thing? That's not needed for this hack (since it isn't a regular file unless installed).

Matt!
Sorry I can?t give u the URL cause I have the hack installed only on my webserver not online (this is my normal practise so if anything goes wrong the online Board is not down or anything! :D) and my Board is not for Public view!
But I can send you the files and the templates as txt files if you want! Just give me your mail addy via pm and I?ll send it to you!
I have done all you said in the install file and the categories are just not there!
Maybe don?t using the CSS is the solution??
Or any other suggestions?
Thx for your help

Just wanted to give my thanks :p
I put the avatar categories hack into my board (vb 2.2.1) and it looks great EXCEPT that the very same 25 avatars show up for each category no matter which one you choose! And at the bottom of the screen where the # of av is listed, there is nothing for total # of avatars, just "showing 4 of 4".
Anyone have any idea what went wrong??
Its the first 25 avatars I had in there to begin with. And show categories is enabled.

I think I've found the problem: register.php
Infact, many users choose category-unaccesible avatars at register time.
I think the quickest solution could be replace
if ($avatarenabled) { with if ($avatarenabled and !$avatarpermissions) {
... What do you think about ?

I have a problem.
I am running 2.2.5
I uploaded and ran the sqltodos.php with no problems.
Then i proceed to edit the index.php and I cant seem to find this:
<?php maketableheader("Avatars"); ?>
</table>
<a href="avatar.php?s=<?php echo $session[sessionhash]; ?>&action=upload"> Upload </a> |
<a href="avatar.php?s=<?php echo $session[sessionhash]; ?>&action=add"> Add </a> |
<a href="avatar.php?s=<?php echo $session[sessionhash]; ?>&action=modify"> Modify </a>
What I see for avatars is this:
// *************************************************
makenavoption("Add","avatar.php3?action=add","|");
makenavoption("Modify","avatar.php3?action=modify","|");
makenavoption("Upload","avatar.php3?action=upload");
makenavselect("Avatars");
// ***
When i replace that with the first code I get a parse error. What exactly am I doing wrong here?

I have changed the old version a little. These new version works definitely with vB Version 2.2.5!
I also have enclosed a help file (firststeps.txt) which can help with first problems. Reading through the file at the best at problems after the installation once. Also notice every step in the installation instructions!

Okay, I haven't looked at the new file just posted, but in case that doesn't work, I've just finished installing this on a friend's 2.2.5 board with no problems. Here's what I did in case it helps anyone. :)
I followed the directions bad madman gave, in a nutshell:
1) added each of the templates and made the changes as instructed to modifyavatar template
2) uploaded sqltodos and avatar_categ; ran http://www.yoursite.com/path/to/admin/sqltodos.php
3) Made change to index.php - this was different than in the directions I had (maybe I had an old copy):
Find:
makenavoption("Add","avatar.php?action=add","|");
makenavoption("Modify","avatar.php?action=modify","|");
makenavoption("Upload","avatar.php?action=upload");
makenavselect("Avatars");
and replace with:
makenavoption("Add","avatar_categ.php?s=&action=add","|");
makenavoption("Modify","avatar_categ.php?s=&action=modify","|");
makenavoption("Options","options.php?s=&action=options&settinggroupid=26#settinggroup26");
makenavselect("Avatars / Categories");
4) made changes to member.php - here I added the code after it says >>> Replace ist with (if you don't use CSS-Navigation - see further below):
That is all I did - I skipped all the other CSS stuff. Like I said, I might have an old copy of the directions, but what I did worked, so I figured it might help someone :)

LOL! Bwahahahah, I just figured out why it never showed up before, and it is the stupidest mistake in the world. Funny thing is, everyone who can't get this hack to work 99% chance if you installed correctly its because of this problem (thanks to bad_madman).
In Admin -> Options -> Avatars
Make sure the following are marked yes:
- "Show up avatar categories"
- "Show up not categorized avatars"
Now your drop down list should show, for me it was default for "show up avatar categories" was off, and I never bothered to check that value. d'oh
Its all good now though, great hack and thanks ;)

Rather odd problem. I'm on Version 2.2.6, and for some reason its giving me an error in the registration page when you first enter it. I'm not sure where the error can be found, but its defiantly linked to this hack. I have Microsoft Visual C++ installed that included a script debugging program that picked this error up, so maybe if you don't have MVC++ you may not even get the error on 2.2.6, but it's there I'm sure. Anyway, at first you can hit "no" to the alert, but then when you try to view your avatar on the forum homepage it does not show (in the welcome panel). From there I have noticed the users avatar does not show at all to themselves, but to others it does....
See attachment for picture of error, I hope you can fix it :D
edit:
Now that I overlook the error, a "runtime" error is usually cause from Javascript, is it not? That is the only other language used on my forum other than PHP/MySQL and HTML (which generally does not create those kind of errors).

You have a 2nd 'form' (<form.......>) on your registration page. Standard is ONE 'form'. You should change the JavaScript code in the Template registercoppa and registeradult.
Search in this templates for:document.images.avatarpic.src = document.forms[0].avatarsel[document.forms[0].avatarsel.selectedIndex].value;
Replace it with:document.images.avatarpic.src = document.forms[1].avatarsel[document.forms[1].avatarsel.selectedIndex].value;
This should work...

Known bug in Hack Version 1.25.1: :(
In User CP when anyone changes the avatar, when the pick a category it shows the same avatars from the first category. Thx @Genie for the informations!
I will publish this weekend an update! As provisional solution the problem can be removed as follows :nervous::
Go to the admin area (vB Control panel). Section "Avatars" -> "Options". Mark "No" behind "Avatar Category Permissions".
The update 1.25.2 will contain also new functions:
- Sorting order of the categories alterable.
- More options in the Avatar-Admin area.
- Extensive statistics to the Avatars/Categories.
- Bug Fixing in avatar_categ.php.
- and more... :bunny:

You're fix in post #242 worked good getting rid of the error message in the registration page, but for somereason when any new user registers their avatar does not display on the forumhome page (in the welcome panel). I'm not sure why this is, or if its linked to avatar category hack, but I didn't have this problem before I installed the hack on 2.2.6

Hmm. I hadn't installed the "Welcome Panel Hack" yet.
But I will install the hack once. Perhaps I find what.
You have installed the final version of the "Welcome Panel Hack (http://www.vbulletin.org/hacks/index.php?s=&action=showhack&hackid=21)"?

Registration works faultlessly. The Avatar is then also shown on the home page. If no user is logged in, then the guest avatar is shown. If the user hasn't selected any avatar, then the 'no avatar selected' picture is shown.
It must have any other reason with you that it doesn't work. I wanted to register me in your forum but you just install the Hacks newly ;)

How can i make custom avatars not appear in teh general listing of avatars when someone wants to change there avatar. I dont want people having the ability to select custom avatars for themselves. All the features in this hack is getting me lost. So far i only see changes made in the admin area of the forum. Is there anything that goes into the user control panel or no?
But the most important is hiding custom avatars from the general public viewing.

If you want to see what this hack should look like, go over and register at my forums. I have it working as intended, with CSS navigation to boot.
All you have to do to hide custom avatars is assign them to a specific catagory and then set that catagory's permissions for use only by specific groups (such as admins or mods). You can also assign post counts a user must have in order to use certain avatars, although they will still show up - users just won't be able to use them.
I used to have a catagory called Admins which only admins and mods could see in the UserCP. It's currently disabled, because 1.25.1 of this hack has a bug when use permissions is activated. Madman has indicated this is fixed the the new version, which I am patiently awaiting:)
