The update was already announced for the last weekend.
However, it comes a little later. It is available at the latest tomorrow.

But the most important is hiding custom avatars from the general public viewing. It can be that I haven't understood you correctly :paranoid:
But I think to understand that only you simply would like that users cannot use custom avatars. If this is so (let me know), then you should go to the vB Admin control panel. Clicking there on 'vBulletin Options' and increase the value behind 'Minimum custom posts' and/or mark behind 'Allow uploads' -> 'No'.

What i really want to do is still allow the uploading of custom avatars but at the same time not allow other users to see them in the avatar listing. I tried installing the AVATAR as File hack but that didnt help them from not appearing.
I only want the basic avatars i supply to be visible in the general listing but still allow custom avatars to be used without everyone being able to select it for there use.
Check http://forums.gamer-pit.com
You might have to register, but when you choose your avatar you will see at the bottom of the list are all the custom avatars. They are seen by having names under them, I dont want those to appear what-so-ever. Any ideas?
So a hack that removes the avatars with "names" from being displayed. hehe

And I wanted to say cheers! on the hack, it is nice to have avatars in some sort of order instead of in a huge mishmosh.

But, this time, I would like to test the code in detail before :nervous: However, it looks good. I will upload the update in a couple of hours.
Btw - type yourself in as user of the avatar hack ('i installed this hack'). Through this you are informed automatically by mail ;)
Sorry. At the moment, "send update" function in this forum doesn't work?! I have tried to send an update (06-09-2002). I always after about 30 seconds get an empty page after click on submit... :(

Have you actually the hack 'avatars as file' still installed? This could be the reason. I install this hack and tests once.
Btw: The picture noavatar.gif is apparently missing in your avatars directory...

Hello,
I know my error is user induced :( but I am getting an error:
Parse error: parse error in /home/www/board/misosoup/member.php on line 1448
When ever someone tries to log in, log out or use the edit option in user cp
and of course line 1448 is this:
?>
That is it. I am stumped! I put my backed up copy of members.php back into place for now.
Also after editing the two files in the admin directory I have no option to gain access to the menu directly. I can get access to the menu by droping in the URL manually. I attached a picture of that to show that I must of missed something big.
At the start of the install I chose yes for all options, then step by step I did all the editing as requires in the templates, then the four *.php files, then re-loaded them up via FTP using ASCII
I am so lost :ogre: Bad madman, if you have a moment I would love some help.
Thank you!
I am guessing you might want to look at my /admin/index.php and my members/php files to see what I might have done wrong.
If you do just let me know!

If the avatar menues are missing in the in vB Admin CP , then index.php probably isn't changed. I also like to look at this one ;)

Whenever you see an error that points to the closing line of the script it's due to a missing } somewhere in the script. I'd fire up your backup member.php and re-apply the hack - you missed something.

I thought I would let you know in the FAQ it is working as it should. And even though I needed to drop in URL in manually I am able to create avatar user groups, set permissions no problem. I remember editing all the files step by step as I went along.
Thank you for taking a look at this bad madman.

I had recieved that error I think, I made a copy of my back up copy members.php and then ran the sqltodos.php, if you look at the bottom one of the options will have a link of something =page2 I manually put that into the address but used page6 It can get you right back to where you need to edit the members.php with out having to re-run the hack from scratch.
I had used wordpad the first time around and it put in an extra space somewhere where I was supposed to cut and paste. Using notepad the second time fixed it.
You can find out what line exactly the issue is at like I did by using a telnet application and telnetting into your messageboard home on the web. If you know telnet dont not bother reading on ^_^
You move to your root of your message board then type:
pico members.php You can move around in a telnet session like you move in dos. cd mydir will change to a directory. ls will list files and directories in the current directory. if you type: ls | more it will pause the listing istead of letting go all at once.
if you press control + C at any time in pico it will tell you what line you are on so you can find the troublesome line.
Using the up and down arrow you can move a little, control + V will make you jump a page
Control + X will exit pico, if it asks to save changes, say NO unless you really wanted to make a change in the file. I would reccomend backing it up first though.

I love this new upgrade of the hack. I've got it working almost peachy on vB 2.2.6. The only problem I get is this -

Install prefer without CSS. Perhaps this is less misleading at the beginning ;) But it is real no matter whether you install with or without CSS. It must have another reason, if you get only an blank page.
You probably have forgotten installation steps :surprised: ?

hi. W have your hack installed on the site I work at, but we've found a hole in the permission checking
dunno if this has been fixed before but I didnt notice it.. just point me to the right area please if it has ^^;;
Anyways, if you input an $avatcat value into the linking line.... like member.php?action=editavatar&avatcat=33, then it takes the user to that category even if they dont have the permissions for it. And apparently people have been passing this around our site for a long time, so it's becoming well known
just wanted to make sure this doesnt effect any other of the avatar permissions to and what changes could be made to the script to fix it.
had to disable our script in the meantime in case it effected anything else
thanks ^^;; Great hack btw ^^

Great Thing, bad_madman! Our users love this function.
But now we have up to 3000 avatars and we've problems with the structure of the categories. Is there a possibility for sub-categories?
like:
Main1 (can be empty)
-- Sub1
-- Sub2
Main2 (can be empty)
-- Sub3
-- Sub4
And its possible to have an image navigation? An example: http://avatars.borg-drohne.de/?content=categories&resolution=high (only without the popup!) ;)

I am having the same problems as I had before with this. Its a great hack, and I really need it considering I have 600+ avatars.
When a user signs up, and they return to the boards for the first time, it doesn't show their avatar( appears as Not selected), yet it shows them as logged in. Now when they reply to the email that was sent, it brings them back to the boards and everything appears fine, although their avatar now appears as "Guest". Now when they try to log in, it tells them their password is wrong. And even if they fill out that sheet and reset their password, it still comes up as wrong.
How can I fix this?
Thank you!

This is strange. Hmm. Which ones hack have you installed so that the avatar is shown on the homepage? trilOByte's "Welcome Panel [Final]" or FireFly's "Avatar on homepage". You have these problems, since you have installed my hack 'avatar categories'?
I have Welcome Panel [Final Installed] , and I don't have the problems unless I have the categories show, if I keep them turned off, there is no problem.
Any Ideas?

This didn't happen by the avatar hack uninstallation. Something other is to blame there ;) Please, can you look whether the description 'Custom Avatars Folder' exists 2 times. Use phpMyAdmin for this. Select table 'setting', sort by 'description' and look... I think the entry is 2 times also available there. Delete the 2nd entry and check the settings in vB Admin options. Hi! I see all the categories, but when I try to select, it just won't let me. I need to tell you that I also installed your one avatar taken hack. They worked beautifully on my test board. On this board, it reverts to the no avatar selected unless you use/upload a custom avatar.

Hm. My hack 'one use avatar' isn't compatible with 'avatar category hack'. I must change this... Please undo changes for hack 'one use avatar'. I'll write a changed version of the hack 'one use avatar'...
your 2nd problem: strange. very strange :confused: I don't know. Have you changed the file admin/options.php?
It isn't compatible? Drat! That's a great hack, too! I would love to know when you do make a modified version.
I'll look through my hacks to see if I had to do that. Thanks again!

Okay i got the d/b problem fixed but still havin one more. In user cp the categories show up mixed (always the last five are from a diffrent categorie). Also when selecting a diffrent categorie from the drop down box, the screen refreshes but the same avatars are shown. Funny though, in admin cp it works fine, the groups show as as they are supposed to and no problems changing groups. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Er, is this working for 2.2.6 then or is it still beta? I haven't read a single 'great, thanks - got this working...' ??
It's working great in 2.2.6 now. I just can't use the noavatar.gif hack with it.
But this one is great!

I think I found a bug...
My custom avatars are supposed to be for a select group of people, namely, my "supporting members." However, I have been finding new members when first signing up having the ability to access these custom avatars...
I couldn't figure it out for a while, but finally found the problem...when a new member first signs up, there is a drop down box containing ALL avatars, including custom-made ones...
I've tried everything to get rid of this problem, including "hiding" the custom avatar category, to no avail...the rest of the program works perfectly, is there a solution to this particular problem?
Okay, I just noticed something like that too. All of the "New" avatars I uploaded are showing, including the ones in a 'hidden' folder. But my older ones are not, including avatars that are supposed to be seen.

Any answer on this?
It's getting extremely frustrating dealing with all these new users using custom avatars that are only available to supporting members!

how is this on the server ?
it appears to be killing my server
I installed this hack on a 2.2.7-RC system. I defined some categories and added the avatars with ease. I then tested if how would the hack perform from a user's point of view. The first page was just fine but when I clicked the drop-down list box, everything was just screwed up. Here's some screenshots of the initial page and after jumping to another category:

Hey Bad_Madman! welcome back. Yes. Here are my problems,.
1. Avatars do not show correctly when a new person registers. They don't show all avatars, only newest downloaded and they also show hidden categories.
2. The taken avatar hack doesnt work with the category hack. [this is my other favorite!] It makes it so no one can select an avatar.
I can't wait for the update!!!

Wow what an incredibly cool hack!
Really looked at the screenshots, and what I saw so far, I really really love it. This is the first time I express my gratitude about a hack.
Really great job, and it's good to see such good support on a hack as well.
Not that I have much groups, but it's always to have a male, female section with avatars and a staff section as well. :)
Damn I wish I could do magic like this (yeah now someone will pop up and say it's easy or not a lot work to do, screw them).
Oh and sorry for so much input, I just think work like this deserves some gratitude.

I am getting a strange error with 2.2.8
When I click on my FAQs I get a:
Parse error: parse error in /homepages/31/d5773882/htdocs/megapages/vboard/misc.php on line 230
When I take out the code from the avatar system it works fine! This also affected my SMILIES, when I clicked on GET MORE it showed the same error message, now that I removed this part of the HACK it works fine ( the rest of the board ).
The "cutting" of the code also does not seem do anything to the Avatar Hack because it still works.
What does the code in the misc.php do? Is it "just" for the FAQs? I could live with not having it in the FAQs if the board works fine otherwise and the hack as well.

I greatly appreciate any and all help anyone gives me... thankies in advance ^.^
Ok, i figured telling the erroes might help... on misc.php it says theres a parse error on line 232.... all thats on that line is the ?> command...
I actually got members.php to work kinda... its actually showing the page now, but still not the cats, once again any help is greatly appreciated ^^

hmm.
i'm having this problem:
the permissions are active. i've set it so that only admins and mods have permission to modify or even have an avatar. i've set up categories for them. i've even changed the minimum post settings to make them high enough so that ONLY those groups that have permission can change them.
the deal is, new users can select their own avatar! what is the dealio? :(
i'm using vB 2.2.9 and i'm seriously considering ditching this mod and not allowing avatars at all.

hey guys. i have a bit of a problem. i've posted about this before and i haven't had any answers.
i've installed the hack on vb2.2.9. i can creat the categories and i can upload avatars to the categories. what i am having a problem with is trying to exclude people from being able to select an avatar.
my site has donating members and they, along with the forum moderators, can have avatars, but no one else can.
do i exclude the user groups from the category in order to keep them from being able to select an avatar?
or do i include them in order to keep them from selecting one?
any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Hmm. only a quick workaround:
search in member.php for:
if (($avatarallowupload or $avatarallowwebsite) and $bbuserinfo[posts] >= $avatarcustomposts) {
and replace with
if (($avatarallowupload or $avatarallowwebsite) and $bbuserinfo[posts] >= $avatarcustomposts and
$bbuserinfo[usergroupid]==6) {
6 for the user groupid (User group) which can play with avatars (upload).
For more than one group this code:
if (($avatarallowupload or $avatarallowwebsite) and $bbuserinfo[posts] >= $avatarcustomposts and
($bbuserinfo[usergroupid]==4 || $bbuserinfo[usergroupid]==5 ||
$bbuserinfo[usergroupid]==6 ...)) {

Hmmm.. I could be crazy, but I have had no problems up to 2.3.1
But today since I am moving to a new web host in the AM I figured I would take advantage of a fresh install of 2.3.2 since it just came out.
For the life of me I can figure out why I can not see the avatars when going to choose a new avatar, but they DO show up under the FAQ.
I see the dropdown list, reports the correct number of avatars...
I have done a fresh install 2X and checked for errors a few times now. Not to ask this common phrase, but... Has anyone tried it on 2.3.2 since it was released today?
You can take a gander at the problem at:
http://aries.lunarpages.com/~madoshi2/sobanoodles/
If you look at before 7am Eastern time it will look kinda bland there. From 7am till 8 or 9 it will be offline while I move the db into place.
I want to place the blame on a template issue... but I am not sure.

Oops. With update 2.3.2 come a new function for a better page-navi in the file 'admin\functions.php'. But no problem:
search in member.php for $perpage = $numavatarshigh * $numavatarswide;and inserting (!!!) the following lines under this if (!isset($pagenumber) or $pagenumber==0) $pagenumber=1;
$limitlower=($pagenumber-1)*$perpage+1;
$limitupper=($pagenumber)*$perpage;
and search in member.php for sanitize_pageresults($totalavatars, $pagenumber, $perpage, $perpage, $perpage);
$limitlower=($pagenumber-1)*$perpage+1;
$limitupper=($pagenumber)*$perpage;and replace with// sanitize_pageresults($totalavatars, $pagenumber, $perpage, $perpage, $perpage);
// $limitlower=($pagenumber-1)*$perpage+1;
// $limitupper=($pagenumber)*$perpage;
I would really love the ability to allow specific users access to a certain category. I want to give Contributors to my forum access to a category containing a selection of special avatars.
Is this possible?

Heya bad_madman, I think I found another bug, I am not sure.
In the admin/user.php I get an error on line 671 when I try to use the functions under users: add find move/prune
line 671 points to the } at the end of the section: // ###################### Start modify Avatar ################
//at the end of the section//
//line 671 for me ->// }
// ###################### Start Update Avatar ################
If I remove the line the admin/user functions work again but it shows admin functions again, but errant bits from the avatar selection code show up :D
If you need more information let me know and I will try to provide you with it.

after changing server the avatar cat. hack isn't working. It shows all avatars, members can choose one but it is not updating the existing custom (url) avatar or if they haven't one...! We're on vb 2.0.6 and it has worked perfect but now i wonder what to do. I've chmod 777 the avatar_categ.php but that doesn't work eighter.

just an FYI
if you are installing this hack for the first time.....there is no mention of the changes needing to be made to register.php, you will have to find them in the other links listed in the sqltodos.php
also.....if you have not categorized avatars....those are the only ones that will appear in the list during the registration process...none of the ones in the categories will appear in the list
My solution to that was to disallow the selection of an avatar in the registration process by removing the code from the template... they can go to their usercp to select one since everything shows properly in there.
also.....according to the screen shots.....the word "hidden" in red by categories I am assuming that you have sent so only admin/mods can select....there is nothing referencing that in any of the hack that I can find
otherwise...I got this working fine without too much hassle other than finding and fixing my own mistakes

i tried this, but it wouldn't work the way i was hoping. i STILL cannot limit who can and cannot have avatars.
:(
Hmm. only a quick workaround:
search in member.php for:
if (($avatarallowupload or $avatarallowwebsite) and $bbuserinfo[posts] >= $avatarcustomposts) {
and replace with
if (($avatarallowupload or $avatarallowwebsite) and $bbuserinfo[posts] >= $avatarcustomposts and
$bbuserinfo[usergroupid]==6) {
6 for the user groupid (User group) which can play with avatars (upload).
For more than one group this code:
if (($avatarallowupload or $avatarallowwebsite) and $bbuserinfo[posts] >= $avatarcustomposts and
($bbuserinfo[usergroupid]==4 || $bbuserinfo[usergroupid]==5 ||
$bbuserinfo[usergroupid]==6 ...)) {

Yes, I have 2.3.2 (a very poor version for those who like hacks...*sigh*) and I had my friend who is hack smart and has used this on his sites to install it for me, and he couldn't get it to work.
PLEASE get a version of this for 2.3.2. It's so useful, and I would love to have it...but it just doesn't work for 2.3.2 (like a gazillion other hacks, growl!)

On the previous page, there was a person who said that he/she got the hack to work after madman posted some code to change specifically for 2.3.2. :)

I have installed this on my message board and it's working beautifully for the most part. Problem is - everytime I try to go to a different category, I can't see past the first page of those avatars. I go to 01 Moderators and click on page 2 and it automatically takes me back to the 2nd page of the first category that I can see - 00 Admin Emma. I'm running 2.3.4 - it works GREAT for the most part so I'm sure it's compatible, but has anyone with 2.3.4 hacked this in, encountered the problem, and fixed it? If so PLEASE help!
edit: I CAN see the avatars in each admin category, but for the regular member avatars they're all in one big group, just like others.

Oops. With update 2.3.2 come a new function for a better page-navi in the file 'admin\functions.php'. But no problem:
search in member.php for $perpage = $numavatarshigh * $numavatarswide;and inserting (!!!) the following lines under this if (!isset($pagenumber) or $pagenumber==0) $pagenumber=1;
$limitlower=($pagenumber-1)*$perpage+1;
$limitupper=($pagenumber)*$perpage;
and search in member.php for sanitize_pageresults($totalavatars, $pagenumber, $perpage, $perpage, $perpage);
$limitlower=($pagenumber-1)*$perpage+1;
$limitupper=($pagenumber)*$perpage;and replace with// sanitize_pageresults($totalavatars, $pagenumber, $perpage, $perpage, $perpage);
// $limitlower=($pagenumber-1)*$perpage+1;
// $limitupper=($pagenumber)*$perpage;
Believe me people been having this problem a lot, try this, cuz mine is up and going.. if you do what this part ^^^ up here tells ya.. then you should see you avatars AND you gotta put them in order as well, like if you have,
Avatar Misc 0
Avatar #2 0
You gotta put 1 then 2 then fix the order.. that should work as well.. and you have to put in the schemes too.. I hope that helps (blushes)
Buggy problem on 2.3.5 with the registration process.
It has been occuring a lot that people while registering have access to all avatars, even the ones marked for certain usergroups only. I have it currently circumvented by removing the avatarbits from the registration templates, but is there a more convenient solution for this?

As noted by the hack creator: this hack is not supported. This guy hasn't been online in months and the hack is almost 5 years old.
vBulletin and Jelsoft have nothing to do with hack support, so emailing them is quite useless actually.
Personally I suggest upgrading to a vBulletin 3. I didn't get this hack to work either a few months ago on a vBulletin 2.3.x version and since it's implemented in the newer vBulletin versions, I just upgraded to vBulletin 3 and did my thing there. I would highly suggest doing that, trust me you'll benefit from it eventually. You can get the looks of vBulletin 2 done with vBulletin 3 if you want, so there's no real pressing reason to stay on vBulletin 2 these days.
Good luck.
