$stylevar[imgdir_buttons] in a plugin

I'm trying to use $stylevar[imgdir_buttons] in a plugin so I can choose to display a button based on style but the variable is always blank... the plugin is on the hook showthread_post_start. Any ideas how I can do this? I guess I never used this in a plugin before only templates- not sure if it's different. :confused:

Seems like it should work, but it looks like it's 'imagedir_button' without the 's'.
