Needing to figure out image code

I'm working to modify a product which has in its code a condition

<if condition="$thread['altimage'] && $thread['image']">

This does not work.

What I am trying to do is pull an image from a thread which is a link to another site, for example:

http://netdugout.com/midwest/files/2010/07/chris-johnson.jpg
