Store user data

I would like to store user-specific data in vBulletin 4, i.e. last viewed thread. I want to show this data somewhere in the header of each page when user is logged in. I don't want users to manipulate this data. How to do it easily?

Please tell me the code to set and to get this variable in the template. Thank you!
