How Difficult to make my own Mod ???

Very general question (I know) ... but how difficult is it to make my own mod?
What languages do I use?

Personally, I would like to build a "stock tracking" mod where my members would enter their "trades" and the system would calculate the profit/loss and display it for other members to see. Perhaps also "rank" them by percentage ... or sort by member, stock, etc.

Since vB uses PHP and mySQL, you'd use PHP and mySQL.
