Picture and Album Gallery for vB4


This is a simple mod written out of frustration with the lack of such a basic feature in vb4 (and vb3, etc....) :mad:

Features:
Adds a Gallery drop-down menu to the nav bar OR to the navtab which allows browsing AND searching of all pictures and albums on your site.

The search function searches the album title, album description, picture caption AND username.

Note: If guest permission AdminCP->Usergroups->UserGroup Manager->Unregistered/Not Logged In->Can View Albums is "yes" then they will be able to browse album and picture thumbnails - they may NOT be able to view the full-size pictures. To hide the gallery menu from guest see Settings below.

The gallery and menu is phrased.

Tested with Vbulletin 4.0.2/3 (note: earlier versions have not been tested and are not supported) AND vBadvanced 4 beta1.

Settings:
None are needed - it does what it says on the tin :p.

AdminCP->Options->User Profile:Album Options "Pictures Per Page" and "Albums Per Page" control the number of thumbnails displayed per page in each gallery type.

If you get images overlapping the borders then you have inconsistent thumbnail sizes - you need to:
AdminCP->Maintenance->Update Counters->Rebuild Attachment Thumbnails

If you want to hide the Gallery menu from guests then edit the Gallery navbar (or navtab) popup menu plugin and change $allowguests = from true to false

Installation

Unzip the download package and copy the contents of the UPLOAD folder into your forum folder.
Go to the VB AdminCP->Plugins & Products click "Manage Products". The click "Add/ImportProduct" at the bottom of the page.
Click "Browse" button and point to the product-gallery-(etc).XML file included in this ZIP package.
Click "Import"
Once the gallery import is complete, click "Add/Import Product" again and select EITHER product_gallery_navtab-xxx.xml OR product_gallery_navbar-xxx.xml depending on where you want the gallery menu to appear (navbar or navtab).... all done

Updates

To update from an older version you MUST uninstall the product (admincp->manage products: delete Picture and Album Gallery). Then re-install as above.

Do you see the header/footer/etc with nothing in the center or is the entire screen blank?

Check the product is installed properly - there should be a plugin called "Gallery Popup Menu" listed in the plug in manager, There is no change to the album - just a new menu item on the navbar (obviously, if you have a custom navbar template without the correct template hook then it won't work :()

I've just installed it again on a clean vb system and works OK- what version vb are you using?

During the install I noticed that I hadn't set the vb dependencies (fixed now) so you would have been able to install it on pre- 4.0.2 versions - and I haven't tested with them :( so it may not work (the solution is obvious - upgrade!)

Unfortunately I haven't been able to duplicate the problem on two different "clean" install test sites - that makes it kinda hard to fix it!

Yes, it is weird :) If the gallery menu isn't appearing in the navbar then the hook location isn't in the navbar template (or the vb system has been severely hacked). try disabling any other nav mods you have.

This is really awesome, there are albums that I didn't even know existed on my board and they are great! I do have a problem though, my thumbnails are bigger then the white background box behind them and the text that goes with the pictures gets cut off?

This modification just pulls CSS the way vBulletin does the album templates by default (which is pretty nasty right now IMHO). It's not the fault of this mod.

If you want to make some adjustments, these two values will probably help point you in the right direction. Use values you want, then just stick them in your additional.css template so they override built-in values:

If you upgraded from vb3 OR changed your attachment thumbnail size then you need to:

AdminCP->Maintenance->Update Counters->Rebuild Attachment Thumbnails


v1.03b fixes the layout problems Alien and others have noticed. You can also now control whether unregistered users can see the gallery menu (see first post) and view the thumbnail galleries.

Great mod! It works.. but I am having an issue with the formatting of the pictures and albums. Please see the screenshot below:

I upped the max limit of displayed pictures and albums to 30 to try to compensate and fix it because it wasn't working with the default 10/25.

It look like the thumbnails might be different sizes - try AdminCP->Maintenance->Update Counters->Rebuild Attachment Thumbnails

For "Gallery" to appear next to forum in the light blue nav bar , then for all the sub menu options of gallery, such as Picture Gallery, Albums , latest albums etc to appear in the dark blue nav bar below which in the image linked above currently contains "help,calender, new post" etc.

The "add albums" option is just a link to the standard vbulletin script "album.php" - same as if you click the "Create new Album" button on your profile album page. Try the button in your profile and you will find it does exactly the same thing

Check that the plugin appears in the list in AdminCP->Plugins & Products->Plugin Manager. If it does then the navbar template hook must be missing in your vb installation (are you using a modified navbar template?).

It's in the plugin manager, but you are probably on to something with the template hook thing. I haven't manually changed the default navbar template, but could another add-on have modified it for me? This is what is in my list right now:

I have thumbnails set to 600 on my forum, Because of this, when viewing image galleries they overlap. Is there a way to re-define the thumbnail size just for this mod so it show properly?

I don't know, but 600 is hardly a thumbnail. Don't you test your layouts on the lowest common denominator - like a 1024X768 laptop screen? One of your 'thumbnails' would fill half my screen! And then there's netbooks at maybe 1024X600. It doesn't sound like you're thinking this through.

It's in the plugin manager, but you are probably on to something with the template hook thing. I haven't manually changed the default navbar template, but could another add-on have modified it for me? This is what is in my list right now:

I am not familiar with any of these plugins. If you check the plugin code for each one you will see which template hook it uses ($template_hook[something_or_other]). Check for $template_hook[navbar_after_getnew]. More than one plugin can use the same hook location provided each appends its output to the hook variable.

You could try changing the gallery hook location to $template_hook[navbar_start], $template_hook[navbar_after_pm], $template_hook[navbar_after_faq] or $template_hook[navbar_after_calendar] which will move it to a different position in the menu.

Err... no. Browser image resizing would significantly increase page load time. The sites I run have the full images resized to 800 on upload (thumbnails at 120) - there isn't much benefit in having a higher resolution for the vast majority of users. I would suggest you re-size thumbnails to 100-150 (the size of your thumb :)).

Just an Update: I figured out what my problem was: I kept searching for a tab instead of a sub-menu. I ended up using this mod to put in a tab:

Ok, I see now that even if I make a tab that says Media and link it to the album display in this mod, it still highlights the forum tab. I guess I'd need to know how to change it to highlight the Media tab and use the custom submenus I created via the add-on I listed earlier in this post.

No - this mod uses the vB albums system. Users can create and add to as many albums as they wish or they can use common group albums.

Yep- the links in the navtab are backward - the navbar is OK though. I'll upload a new version later :o

The navTab popup uses the same style as the navBar popup. There are no navTab popumenu stylevars so I've used the popupmenu popuphover class with navbar_tab_linkhover_color and navbar_tab_font to keep it consistent with the other menus. Unless anyone has any better ideas?

The album thumbnails use the vB album_latestbit template (class albumthumbcontainer) and the picture thumbnails use the picture class.

I defaulted the tab to use picall.php as that is the one that makes most sense for me to use.

The options (links) that are displayed below the tab, regardless if you are viewing albums or pictures are:

Picture Gallery Album Gallery Latest Albums My Albums (drop down -> View My Albums, Add Album). I didn't phrase the word View as I was only planning to use it on my site and seen no need.

It look like the thumbnails might be different sizes - try AdminCP->Maintenance->Update Counters->Rebuild Attachment Thumbnails

I note you are running vb 4.0.1 - this mod has only been tested on 4.0.2 :)

I recently updated to 4.0.2 PL4 and also the the 1.0.7 version of this mod, and the problem has been resolved.

The gallery is a drop down because it doesn't point to a single page - you need to make a selection. It's impossible to provide plugin code for every type, style and position of menu layout - if you don't like either of the options provided then write your own OR look around this site for the menu mods (there are quite a few).

The Tab plugin supplied with the mod works fine with IE8 :)

One problem though... I just installed, tried both nav structures, didn't like the drop down tab (would prefer a regular tab to album all and then navbar drop down for the rest). Anyhow, that's not my one problem, but rather my one wish. Here is my one problem, when I installed the navbar nav, it disappears (the navigation) on the albumall.php, which means once a user gets to that page, there is NO way to navigate your product. They have to go back to the Forum, and then begin navigation again. (To clarify, the entire "forums" navbar disappears on the albumall.php, not just the nav for your gallery.)

Is there some way I can fix this? I know that I've seen other sites that use your mod without this issue, I don't know if this is due to the new plug-in installation, or ??? Bothersome though... lol. Thanks again for sharing, and let me know Santa's address so I can mail that WISH to him! ;)

The navbar plugin with this product uses a single template hook and will work on any installation that has that template hook in the correct location. Your navtab mod obviously doesn't :) I'm not going to hack around inside someone else's mod so I would suggest that you just add the links to the album/picture gallery PHP files in your navtab mod instead of using the plugin I've provided OR take a look back in this thread for other suggestions on navbar/tab mods.

Ok, I completely uninstalled my tab mod and created plugins for each added button per Lynne's tutorial you linked to (thanks!). Now there doesn't seem to be any conflicting code. My nav tab works fine to go to your product page, albumall.php. It stays "selected" for the other "album" pages, as I want. No prob...

Only issue is, that my NAVBAR is missing on those pages. I'm still using your navbar plugin, and when I click on "Forums" the whole navbar, along with your gallery links, show up fine. However, once I click on one of the gallery links, the entire navbar disappears along with your gallery links.

I know that I could just code the drop-down Nav-Tab, but I don't like it. (I don't like ANY drop-down nav tabs, not just yours. ;))

Anyhow, I would really like for all of the forum navbar (along with your gallery links) to remain visible while on your pages. How can I get them to appear as I wish?

Nevermind, I hard-coded the gallery links into the gallery navtab plugin, and decided that I don't need the rest of the forums navbar on those pages. I'm displaying it more as a separate product from the forums, along with the album.php.

vB doesn't support picture/album ratings so I assume you are using another mod. It would be difficult to support 3rd party mods.

As there's no character limit to album titles, I also see the overrun of text at the base of the album placeholder. So, a quick workaround is to modify the CSS...

Feature suggestion: Show random pictures no older than x days.

Problem: Selecting 'new' pictures means the pictures are static with only the same last ~5 pics showing all the time. Selecting 'Random' pics shows pics 5 years old as well as newer pics, with no way to weight the display towards newer pics.

Seems to have some issues in 4.0.3, pictures and the frames they're set in aren't flush, text is cut off and the pictures extend past their frame. Tested in IE8 and FF3.6

Scratch this, this seems to be an error with vBB in general and not the mod. I just did a test upgrade against a clone of my 3.8 forum and maybe that's part of it.

edit: Mostly fixed by rebuilding my attachment thumbnails.

Yes. With one exception - guests can view thumbnails if their permission canviewalbums is Yes (the default vB behaviour is to disallow guests from viewing thumbnails - in either case they will not be able to view the full-size images)

My thumbnail pics are set to 100x75 which for me are ample enough.

Can you add a screenshot or link to your public albums? I may be able to help out here.
Other than that, uninstall and reinstall the product to see if that resets the dimensions.

The vB CSS dynamically calculates the div size using the current admincp thumbnail dimensions - unless you've messed with the CSS as a previous poster suggested?

Use an Album - which has a cover picture - all part of vB. There are first/previous/next/last buttons on the page navigation (top AND bottom of each page).

Nope - it's an issue with your host - the MYSQL variable max_user_connections is set too low (for a reasonably active board it should be at least 200). You could try reducing the number of images per page (see first post) but that's only a fudge and won't stop users seeing the error.

...gallery-108 has the templates and phrases for the product - if you remove it the product will not work. The other xmls just add menu options that link to the product. Exactly what are you trying to do?

Try checking the CSS for popupbody popuphover and the style variables navbar_tab_linkhover_color and navbar_tab_font - one or more of them must have been been modified.

Post a link to your site if you are still having probs.

For the tab you need to check the popupmenu class, for the menu items it's navbar_tab_linkhover_color. Should be the same variable for all tabs.

What "upload photo page" - this mod hasn't got an upload feature? If you read the installation instructions you will see a reference to rebuilding thumbnails which fixes any sizing issues. Errors on links are probably caused by not uploading the PHP scripts to your forum home directory.

If you want to provide detail I'd be happy to look at any problems.

It uses the same css classes as the standard vB album view. Your style has problems with vB album views - see http://www.scififur.net/forum/album.php. If you fix that then this mod will also work properly.

If you want to display the pictures on the forum home page (could get very messy!) then you could add it into the FORUMHOME template in the appropriate place.

Try reading the first post :p - you'll be surprised what you will find there.

Each page has a full navigation panel (page numbers, forward/back/start/end) at the top AND bottom of the picture display.
