I am new to this and trying to get a handle on CRON. I understand that it is a task scheduler, my question is can I use this to do a weekly backup of my website and how do I do this?

I also noticed that my host has CRON on the admin control panel, it is a point and click to set up the day/month etc, then it has a blank for the command I want to run, the problem is I don't know what command to put in there.

I would also like to run a command to delete backups that are over 1 month old if possible.

Also as a newbie are there any other tasks I should consider automating with CRON.

also can anyone point me to a good website describing these things in not too technospeak.

thanks

The vbulletin cron system, and the cpanel cron are two completely different things, to which are you referring here ?

I didn't realize that, does the vb cron just call vb related tasks? and if so is their any documentation on how to use it for vb? also what are the most common tasks that people set up?

take a look in your admin panel

Scheduled Tasks > Scheduled Task manager >

There you can see the vb cron tasks, and theres also a button that allows you to add your own, IF your really need to.

Cron is just another way of putting Scheduled Tasks,
and if you want backups via cron, and your WEBSITE have that option use that instead
cause that would proberly also backup all your files etc..

while vbcron you can get to backup your database.

but most common use, is keeping rss feeds updated, keeping threads, posts, and other various lists up to date.

oh wow, he didn't mention the backup tool, I will have to look for that.

Its a steep learning curve setting up this site and learning all the features, I thought I was at the "I am learning how to do that stage" but realize everyday that I am at the "Oh I didn't know I needed to do that and what is it that it does" stage....lol

I think I have screwed up as much as I have set up, latest adventure I think I have scared away all the bots but thats another topic.
