I'm currently struggling to get the user's current avatar to appear in the custom header template I've defined (not tried in the defaut header one).
I managed to do it on 3.x series by creating a plugin that effectively grabbed the avatar info from the DB and then print it out as if I remember correctly the variable that the system used wasn't defined at the stage I needed it.
I fear that this is the same situation here. I see a variable titled $customavatar used in the modifyavatar template so tried using that (registered it etc) and that had no impact. But the plugin I used on the 3.x series doesn't seem to be working either (maybe I'm using outdated variables).
Has anyone else managed to do this yet?

I just noticed this should have probably gone into the programming forum. Could some1 move it there please.
