Country Flags - Postbit & Postbit_Legacy. vB 4.0.x (Inc GO

Description:

This Add on, gives a selection of Countries that your Member (New or Existing) can choose from in a 'Drop-Down Menu'. The Country he/she selects, will be displayed as a Flag in their Postbit.

Credit for the Flags goes to Cobro (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/member.php?u=168975). (I have renamed each and every flag to work with this Mod).


Instructions:

Firstly ?Upload? ALL the Flag GIF pics to your forum root /images/buttons/flags folder.

IE: yourforumaddress.com/forum/images/buttons/flags

Please Note: Due to the flags folder being too large to upload as one - I have been forced to upload it as "flags1", "flags2" and "flags3" - Please ensure that you add a new folder to "images/buttons/" and name it "flags". Please copy the contents of ALL THREE (3) flags folders in the attachment below to the new 'flags' folder that you have just made. (DO NOT place them as 3 seperate folders!"


Then in your Admin Control Panel (ACP), please do the following:
ACP -> User Profile Fields -> Add New User Profile Field ->Profile Field Type -> Single-Selection Menu (select ?Single-Selection Menu? from the Drop-Down Menu) -> Please enter the following into the following fields (REMEMBER to make a note of the FieldID, because you will need to replace ALL the X?s in [fieldX] with it!!!
(Please see 'FieldID.jpg' attachment below).

Add New User Profile Field Single-Selection Menu:

Title = Country Flag
Description = Add your country flag to your profile:
Profile Field Category = (Uncategorized)
Options = Copy & Paste the Whole contents of the file attached below (OPTIONS)
Set Default = None
Display Order = You Select this (dependant on how many you already have)
Field Required = yes, at registration and profile updating
Field Editable by User = Yes
Private Field = No
Field Searchable on Members List = No
Show on Members List = Yes


Optional Input:

Allow user to input their own value for this option = No
Max length of allowed user input = 100
Field Length = 25
Regular Expression = Leave this Blank


Display Page:

Which page displays this option? = Edit Your Details ** Please note that the vB4.0.4 Version does not show this option. Please select "Edit Profile" option. The selct your country flag option, I can confirm, Also shows on registration too.
** SAVE **


Then, In your Admin Control Panel (ACP)...

ACP -> Styles & Templates -> Style Manager -> <<>> -> Postbit Templates -> select the template that you use (ie Postbit or Posbit_legacy) ? This is for the Postbit_Legacy?

You'll need to remove the dashes (-) in the country names if the country would not normally have a dash. The names in the list must match the file names for the graphic files; or you need to change the graphic file names to match the list.

The countries within that File, Charlie - Won't work on the vB4 - I had re-done the ones that needed to be done, but I didn't upload the file.

i solved it by simply removeing it and replaceing it why my own path.. :D

I have had a look on mine and it isn't showim=ng on there either. Even though the "Yes" is selected to show in "Member List".

I've moved the flag to up alongside the username, was wonder if you, or anyone else, knows how I could move it more to the right in the postbit, and also have the username at the top? I could do it with html but am unsure on css at this stage. Have atrtached a pic so you can see what I mean

Found my problem, dureing upgrade it have somehow changed my fields.
was using field 5, and it said so in the db, but when checking the db userfields
it was now 7, and 5 didnt ewen exist..

haha minor problem, fixed.. and working again.. yay

Only one thing I could mention is the image "Autre" I think you missed in translation and should be "Other" (my French is a little rusty though).

As a suggestion to others I renamed "Autre" to "Blank" then added it to the top of the list for users who didn't want to display their nationality as I've forced users to make a selection.

Great mod Welshy2008, well done!

Two problems with the country flags though. First of all, when someone selects UK, it only shows the text "Users Country Flag". This is because the file is named UK.gif instead of UK.GIF.

Second problem is that there is no Northern Ireland. Or am I missing something? :D

The members on my Forum are mainly from the United Kingdom and Ireland so Vaupell's point is important for me as well.

I have changed the X to your field number 6 for you, but you still won't see them.

The reason is that you are using the postbit_legacy and not the Postbit on your forum.

The reason is that you are using the postbit_legacy and not the Postbit on your forum.

It is not in alphabetical order throughout the Options text.

I have now re-done it all in aphabetical order and attached it below (and to the Origianal Opening Post).

I added the ':' because I prefer them and vB 4 did not include them. I added them to all the others manually too.

I don't know if the latest version has covered this (4.0.1) because I did a complete upgrade over my 4.0.0.

I must say that I have and continue to have used the {vb:stylevar imgdir_button} with No problems.

But everyone is free do change it to whatever they feel is best for their forum. And to give feedback on their experiences here.

One of the things that I don't like with the new vB is everything on the "Postbit" is aligned to the far right.


Does anyone know how to have that closer together like vB3? With just one space between the ':' and the Member's answer.

i dont know the reason, but on my 4.01 install the semicolons are automatically added, and the use of <dt>Country:</dt> results in double-colons, ie Country::
whether this is specific to me, i dont know :confused:
the issue with {vb:stylevar imgdir_button} is that this nearly always varies from theme to theme, and a user will need to upload the flags dir into each and every themes button directory, which pretty much defeats the purpose of using variables full stop.
anyway, i didnt post these things to demand a change so much as for the use of others that may experience double-colons or wonder why the flags dont show in their non-default theme.

I added the ':' because I prefer them and vB 4 did not include them. I added them to all the others manually too.

I don't know if the latest version has covered this (4.0.1) because I did a complete upgrade over my 4.0.0.

I must say that I have and continue to have used the {vb:stylevar imgdir_button} with No problems.

But everyone is free do change it to whatever they feel is best for their forum. And to give feedback on their experiences here.

One of the things that I don't like with the new vB is everything on the "Postbit" is aligned to the far right.


Does anyone know how to have that closer together like vB3? With just one space between the ':' and the Member's answer.

I am using vB 4.0.1 and there is only one (1) ':' showing for me.

But; as you say, if there are two (2) showing, just remove the one from my code. :)

I just wanted to say thank you for such a great mod. I run a Vinylmation (Disney's vinyl toy) website and forum, and actually tweaked this mod up a little bit to have users display their favorite figure rather than their country. All it was was changing a few words and voila. The potential is far greater than simply showing countries. Fantastic job!

I plan to use it. The flags included don't really match the esthetic of my site. But I have a set of flags from FAMFAMFAM, (they are free). They can be downloaded here:

There are many flag icon sets out there, and easy to find. Round ones, glossy/gel button ones. Big ones. Small ones.

Note to others:

The terrific thing is, Jamie's script works with any set, so longs as your list in your custom menu matches the file names of the images in your folder.

On a side note: I realized after the fact that Jamie used ".GIF" and mine were lower case ".gif" so it initially gave me a broken link, but it was a simple fix to make the code lower case... easier than changing them to uppercase on all my file names. As a consequence, it would be just as easy to use PNGs or JPGs, and just change the suffix in the code.

PS. I really have to hand it to Welshy2008 / Jamie, it's a very flexible script. Simple, easy to customize and could be repurposed for so many things. Kudos. Voted: 5 stars.

Nevermind figured out I had to move the flags over to the new skins images files.

Please see the quotes, that I have quoted above. It appears that there is a known bug with firefox that does that to animated images.

hrmmm not sure why it does it with your GIF's maybe the way you saved your GIF images because i have gone on animated GIF sites and they do load fine.... so not sure why FF will be displaying them like that...

Me neither. Hmm.

They were working great until recently. So I don't know what FF have done.

And, they were made by someone else, so I haven't the foggiest idea how they were saved.

No Worries i found out the problem but i dont know all the countries, if anyone has had the same problem as me go to the flags folder and you see where it says flag_au.GIF change that to Australia.GIF and the flag_uk.GIF change that to UK.GIF and the same to the rest that you think are important unless you know all the codes.

I know some of you guys also having the same problem i have uploaded a zip with ones i have edited so you can just upload this zip to flag folder and un-zip it..

I took my time and changed all the names of the flags images so that you can just upload these Zips instead and follow the developers Installation and your Flags will and should work fully without modifaction to the Flag Names...

Right if you uploaded my Zips instead and extracted them all into the flags file and you installed the way the developer has told us, then open AdminCP > User Profile Feilds and where Norway is put Not Telling under it and save it and when they click on the flags and see Not Telling and click and save it it will show up the Not Telling Flag.

They worked fine with me when i was on firefox 3.5 with Vb4.0.1 so im not sure why they arent for you. You just need the new zips which i uploaded with the names of the flags or they wont show up.

Unfortunately, I have no control over FF, and I am unable to re-align everyones flag layout to suit. I did mention that if you would like to move or do anything else, then YOU are free to do so.

As I have already explained. They are like this because of a bug in FF. They are perfect in IE.

I dont know why all you people are having trouble with this mod, i found it easy to follow ad installed it correctly.

The only problem i had was the names of the flags.

I use and checked my old VB4.0.1 with the following Browsers whichi worked fine:

Internet Explorer 8

Firefox 3.5

Google Chrome

Im also on Windows Vista..

Erm everything worked fine and its very very good.. if nothing works try another browser is what i myself recommend...

If you need the names of the flags read the last pages and see my zips which are full rights to the developer of this mod, i just renamed them.. First make sure you follow his Installation rules.

Ok,

I have done that for you and tested it all out with various flags.

All it was is that you selected "Sinlee Text line" instead of "single selection menu" and you only changed one of the "X"'s in the postbit_legacy code.

I had to delete your old "profile field" as I was unable to edit it. (strangely).

So I re-entered the new number in the BOTH 'X' positions and the country flags now work.

I have been informed that the latest flag folders to be attached are .gif and not .GIF, as you correctly pointed out with the UK flag.

If it is the case that all the flags are .gif (I haven't checked as yet), it would be easier to chage the code from .GIF to .gif:

Hello I installed this mod a while ago and actually haven't noticed this until just now but I have an unusual problem with this in IE8. When I use IE8 I get a weird horizontal rule under the flag (see attachment).

Oh and in Firefox I just realized that I get the blurry image others are talking about. These were both working fine before but I guess its because I updated to new browsers for both. Any chance of a fix on these? Or is it just browser problems?

Edit: Nevermind I fixed the horizontal line it was a conflict with another mod :). Anyway is there any fix yet for Firefox?

Try going into UserCP and reselecting the Country from your Dropdown list and click Save.

Try going into UserCP and reselecting the Country from your Dropdown list and click Save.

See if that sorts it for you?

Add New User Profile Field Single-Selection Menu:

Title = Country Flag
Description = Add your country flag to your profile:
Profile Field Category = (Uncategorized)
Options = Copy & Paste the Whole contents of the file attached below (OPTIONS)
Set Default = None
Display Order = You Select this (dependant on how many you already have)
Field Required = yes, at registration and profile updating
Field Editable by User = Yes
Private Field = No
Field Searchable on Members List = No
Show on Members List = Yes

I have found it way better to use the following code the the one supplied. It made it look better and its in a better position. Also notice that when you hoover over the flag it will actually say the full name of the country.

Find:
{vb:raw template_hook.postbit_userinfo_right}

Add ABOVE:

<vb:if condition="$post['fieldx']">

<dt>Country:</dt>

And of course X being your field id for the user profile field.
