Forum Style - Mobile Style for vBulletin 4.0

However, you can run them both if you know you have older mobile phones accessing your site as they may be able to render this one better **




This is a port of my mobile style from 3.7/3.8 (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=174375) to 4.0.0.

It is a very cut back style with very low bandwidth usage which renders well on pretty much all small screen devices from old Nokias to new iPhones.

Currently it only supports forums/thread/posts/PMs. Recent vBulletin features such as Social Groups, Albums, Blogs are not supported (although they should still disaplyin a not-so-mobile-friendly way...)

has an add-on product to customise here: Extend and Customise Mobile Style (It is recommended that you install this also, but not required)

Save wireless.css.txt to wireless.css and uppload to your forum root
Save XML style file and install via AdminCP

To change style attributes, you need to edit the CSS file

Looks the same - I've changed as liitle as possible. It is the same CSS file, so if You've made customisations, they will still work also.

Dartho made this quickly after I had asked about a vB4 version, and I had the pleasure of being the guy to test it for him.

Confirmed working on a Samsung Messenger SCH-r450 as well as the 3.8/3.7 version.

I can also confirm the Different Domain, Different Style hack for the vb 3 series still works for vb4. So grab it and this and hook up mobile.yourdomain.com and you're good to go!

This isn't an "iPhone" style - it's more generic and will display on devices of all sizes and capabilities, most importantly - mine :-)

There are a few styles for 3.8 for iphones, I'm sure it won't take someone long to update theirs for 4.0.

Also keep an eye out for a future 4.x release of vBulletin with a built in 'lite' style - they've already started work on it, have a look at the postbit_lite template ...

I have a query which should sort out all those template conflicts:

change DBNAME to the name of your database,XX to the styleid number of the mobile style and 4.0.0 to whatever the version number currently is.

4.0.0 worked for me with PL1. I subsequently changed it to 4.0.1 to see what would happened - it didn't have an issue, so you could probably up the version number to 4.0.99 if you wanted to - someone wanna test?

You'll have to change the above query to take any database prefix into account.

You might want to take a look at Replacement Variables.
It renders smileys with a ':-)' after them.
I removed them and worked nicely.

I would say so. Is the style user selectable, and have you selected it? If you want your site to automatically detect you are using an iPhone and change style for you, you will also need to install this: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=226946

I haven't really tested these under 4.0 first, but these did work in 3.8 and provide a starting point.

I just reinstalled it and it's working fine... feel dumb for not trying that, but it just appeared broken like something changed with the stylevars after the 4.0.1 upgrade. But alas, it works fine ;)

Anyone have an issue with CSS accross the board after installing the mobile ap. It started to default to the mobile screen regardless if we selected another theme/skin. When I deinstalled it and reloaded the other themes, they all were now text mode.

A friend looked at it on his device and he says it's the same for him.

I've tried to solve the issue by putting copies of the css file in both the website root and the forum directories. but no joy.

Thanks to dartho for taking a look at the site. The main forum page renders correctly till it comes to the place where the vBulletin forum is inserted by vBAdvanced. At that point the all links are broken because the spaces are removed from the code! "a href=" becomes "ahref=" and spaces in the link names are stripped out.

The vBAdvanced pages work fine in other styles, and this style looks fine on my test forum that doesn't have vBAdvanced.

I don't have a solution and doubt that I will. I thought I'd post what I've learned in case someone else runs into the same problem.

Installed the wireless.css file in the forum root. Installed the style and the plugin, and configured the plugin to use the Mobile style when connecting via a mobile device.

Doesn't seem to work that way on my iPhone. Is that not supported?

Your Admin panel specifies a default style for mobile and a default for PC. That's what I set. Mobile for the former and the standard one for the latter.

if this is not an automatic process, based on the user agent of the browser, then these steps are not needed or misleading.

I have our modified version of the VB Default Style as 1 and Mobile as 2.

No, this is just a style. The addon for this style just adds a few customisation options for the style.

However this product - https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=226946 - has been reported to work under vBulletin 4 which may help automate the process.

Dunno what they did, but once the upgrade was completed it told us we had to revert 71 different templates (44 of those were for the mobile style). I reverted just 1 to see if it would have an impact and the Forumhome was destroyed.

Will try the re-install route tomorrow evening when I've the energy

If you want to get rid of the "Out of Date Templates" messages you can run the following query via "Maintenance=>Execurte SQL Query" the to get rid of those messages

change DBNAME to the name of your database,XX to the styleid number of the mobile style and 4.0.2 to whatever the version number currently is.

UPDATE `DBNAME`.`template` SET `version` = '4.0.2', `mergestatus` = 'none' WHERE `template`.`styleid` =XX;

I just installed on 4.0.1 and when I go to the style on my iphone the background is white and the forum links are blue. I tried logging in and it wouldn't take me back to the index page. When I clicked on the link to get me back it gave me a blank screen. I entered the URL myself and a logged in, but still there is no style showing up at all.

Is that what I should be seeing? Based on the pictures posted I thought there was more.

Logging in to view threads is style indpendant - that's your sites configurations placing those restrictions.

vBulletin.org is configuresd such that when a members downloads a modification, it disaplys a notice to the author of the modification accordingly. Same as when you click the "Mark as Installed" link. As fgar as I can tell, you have not downloaded this styel nor clicked the "Mark as Installed" (which makes no difference to functionality, so doesn;t really matter)

The cms can be done but you need to lose the widgets as a compromise. Then the cms can be skinned for mobile devices, its not ideal but its mobile so its all there is.

Thanks to dartho for taking a look at the site. The main forum page renders correctly till it comes to the place where the vBulletin forum is inserted by vBAdvanced. At that point the all links are broken because the spaces are removed from the code! "a href=" becomes "ahref=" and spaces in the link names are stripped out.

The vBAdvanced pages work fine in other styles, and this style looks fine on my test forum that doesn't have vBAdvanced.

I don't have a solution and doubt that I will. I thought I'd post what I've learned in case someone else runs into the same problem.

I have a weird issue, when I use this style no attachments show up in posts. For some reason inside the postbit templates the attachments are being parsed through {vb:raw post.message} and the img tag is somehow being converted to an anchor, which is already wrapped around an anchor.

I can't figure out why because everything shows up normally when I switch to the default style.

The attachment templates themselves are being completely ignored in this style and for some reason the attachments are being parsed inside the post content.

EDIT: I've discovered it only seems to affect attachments posted as INLINE attachments.

EDIT: I've found it. There's custom replacement variables that are converting inline images to anchors.

New v4 on our devforum (seems to work great too)

However, the difference between the two fonts is incredible?

Same iPhone with Safari browser and v4 is so large I don't even need my bifocals .. :D

I was able to easily solve this problem. The mod reported above has an option to ignore for specific styles. Just enter your mobile style ID in there and problem solved.

I really like this mobile style, and the two other mods to help manage it. I do have a couple questions, though.

What would be the template code to add the "add infraction" and "report post" links, in a similar format to the [Edit] and [Reply] links, perhaps [Report] and [Infract] or some such?

If I manually add (board)/infraction.php?do=report&p=x to the url, I was able to give an infraction to post x. It can work at some level.

It wasn't pretty, though: after submitting the infraction, it remained on the same "give infraction" page so I couldn't really be sure it worked. When I navigated back to the page, though, the post did have the infraction.

However, jmwking is welcome to post attachments in this thread, these of course won't get updated as this style does. If I work on templates associated with these edits, then that's another story - but I don;t have plans to in the immediate future.

Yea, thanks. Just on my version of VB, I can't edit mobile style templates because of some error. VB always says, that some bracket is missing and refuses to save template. So, I am just waiting for fixed xml style file.

This shows up if you have the mobile options addon installed in addition to this - I'll post a new version up soon, but in the mean time edit the navbar template in the mobile style and replace

with

@dartho, I have this style installed along with the optional add-on and it works great!

However, I have the Random Album Picture mod enabled which runs globally across all my styles above the forums... Just wondering if there is a way to disable it in this style only. I know this isn't a problem with your style, it works perfectly, just thought I'd get your opinion...

I've tried it but I've found two problems:

If a member (or a visitor) chooses to try the style from a computer (not a mobile phone), he can't revert afterwards to another style because there is no style chooser available in the style.

If he visits the top domain page, this is the cms and the link to the forums doesn't work.

Install "Mobile Style Options" and configure the style chooser https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=229044 and also edit the navbar template in the mobile style and replace

<a class="navbar" href="{vb:raw $vbulletin->options['mo37_navbar_home']}{vb:raw session.sessionurl_q}">{$vbulletin->options['mo37_home_link_text']}</a>

with

This fixes a bug in the style. I'll be releasing an update real soon to address this.

Found the issue, when editing forum home, also search for <div class="navbar">{vb:rawphrase todays_events</div>


and replace with

<div class="navbar">{vb:rawphrase todays_events}</div>

then search for
<a href="forumdisplay.php?{vb:raw session.sessionurl}do=markread">{vb:rawphrase mark_forums_read}</a>
and replace with

<a href="forumdisplay.php?{vb:raw session.sessionurl}do=markread&amp;markreadhash={vb:ra w bbuserinfo.securitytoken}" rel="nofollow">{vb:rawphrase mark_forums_read}</a>
