As a vbulletin admin and a blackberry owner, it was starting to get on my nerves using the browser to point to inbox for pms, replying etc..

So a server side tomcat module was written to connect my mysql with the blackberry device. Read/reply to PMs, threads, upload pics directly etc

Once the bb version is working I will think about doing an iphone version.

My demo right now just connects the database with no password protection. Getting the encryption working, you have to use the same method of encryption so it is going to take a good amount of time.
DEMO COMING SOON

This seems like the short of app that each invidual vbulletin admin would have to custom code for their own version of vbulletin etc..

I appreciate any thoughts on my first blackberry app.

How do you use this? I installed on my storm yet just gives me a login screen but it doesnt ask you for your forum address or anything.

It only works with one forum , in this case k20a.org

It is not a reader. Its like a facebook style app for vbulletin forums. A server side mechanism converts the mysql data into bb text.

Its just a demo now that only connects with the database. I cannot activate it for people to be able to post or reply until I figure out the encryption method.

What would you like to see in an application like this?

Making a generic program that will read all vbulletin sites might be possible but most vb sites have something custom about them.

Hope its making sense

I don't want to take away from your custom app, but I do happen to know that TapaTalk is developing a native app for the BB as they have already done for the iPhone and are about to release to the public for some Nokia, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson phones.

Thank you, no problem.

I did see the iphone app and read about what they might do, but in the end you don't simply give access to your vbulletin database to anyone.

Not was the first thing that came to my mind. The second is that every serious forum deserves a dedicated pda app
that can have unique features. Maybe apps given only to premier members, maybe maybe maybe

There are a lot of ways that you can take advantage of these group of people that are on the run but want to be on th forum as well

The latest vbulletin blog vb4 feature will be added when vb4 is the new standard. Thank you for the opinions,

This is why I came here because most of you are top notch admins

I am able to read the PMs now. Next is the reply feature on PMs and password integration.

I decided that with this app, you will not be able to delete PMs, just read them and reply to them. I am also limiting the amount of PMs that can be read to the latest 100 PMs.

Another cool feature will be uploading cellphone pics on threads with a single click like facebook app.

Replying to PMs and reading important threads on the go will become more efficient.

I really think this program will be a good idea for a large forum where a lot of users are always on the go with their pdas.

I feel bad that I am doing this for 3.8 version instead of vb4 but I want to have the solution for both versions of vb.

Replying to PMs is really nice. I was able to reply to 10 PMs in less than a few minutes. When you reply to a PM through the blackberrry app, the actual vbulletin forum still stores your messages in the SENT messages folder and the messages that have been replied to have the little reply icon added to the message list so that I can keep track to what messages have been replied and which messages have not been replied to.

Only thing left to make this feature 100% complete is for me to find a way to incorporate email notification when a PM is sent through the BB app. I want it to be the same as sending the PM through the actual HTML vb interface.

The PM reply and send feature is complete now. I can reply to messages and send new messages. On the actual website, the sent message will be in SENT folder and the little icon next to the new message has the reply icon so that you will be able to know to which messages you replied. Email notification will come once password authentication is finished.

Some shots to get an idea how it looks and works on my phone.

Instead of replying I can also send a PM as long as I can remember how to spell the user name I am trying to contact. Address book drop down menus will not comes for a long long time. With the new VB4 out and all these different programming platforms for cellphones, there is no point getting the app written for a vbulletin version that will be outdated soon. Hopefully timing will be right and I will have enough time to develop the app for the next vbulletin version that is being tested right now.
