Check the DB authentication details in config.php.

You need to set your mysql user "root" password and priveledges for access from localhost.

I would recommend not to use the root user in mysql for your forum software - it's better to create a separate user and restrict this to just the database the VB uses.

Check the mysql site for help on user priveledges.

I did that, but when I upgrade it threw install/upgrade.php - it didn't change from 8.1. to 8.3

it may have not completed the upgrade. You can run it again.

Failing that:
Suggest you put a support ticket request over at Customer Service on vbulletin.com and see if they can help you with your upgrade issues.

Why don't you use the old config.php file?

The error you get now is very clear: The database details in the current config.php are not set (unless you use the MySQL root user which should not be used).

I fix the problem up (first post), but now, when I install it, it's still 3.8.1. like I didn't; I do it again (every step), but again, it stays 3.8.1.

I contacted vbulletin.com, and they told me to upload files in ascii, but again, the same problem

Stupid question... have you logged out and tried logging back in?

You reuploaded all the files in the install directory and then you pointed your browser to install/upgrade.php ? Did it go through and upgrade you first to 3.8.2 and then to 3.8.3? (You should be clicking a 'continue' button several times through these steps and it will tell you when each upgrade is complete.)

chimpie, wtf?
lynne, yes I did, but it didn't change from 3.8.1 to 3.8.2 and 3.8.3 because it didnt change - stayed on 3.8.1, yes, five steps with continue :)

When on the first upgrade.php page, you will find the versions of the XML files to be used in the upper righthand corner. Do all the files say 3.8.3?

chimpie, wtf?

Don't act all surprised. I did an upgrade once and I had to log out and back in before I saw it as upgraded.

This is the last thing I did:

I found mistake, as I upload it into some folder, but now, when I enter install/upgrade, it goes to install/finalupgrade and again the same problem, only this time something is also wrong, look:

Maybe I need to change favicon too? And when you told that images I dont need to change to ascii, did you mean all images, or only images folder?

ALL text files get uploaded in ASCII and ALL image files get uploaded in binary.

Usually your FTP program will do this automatically, if you allow it to. I suggest FileZilla if you don't already have a dedicated FTP program.

I use FTP Core, and at first, I upload it with automatic, second time, I upload it like lynne told, but again the same problem.

Upload all the latest files to the correct directory and then run the upgrade.php again.

I did that, read the last posts
Maybe, the problem is in uploading - maybe I need to upload one folder at time

Finally, I did it, from beggining the problem was in "install" folder, as I throught it shouldn't be uploaded - readme for 3.8.x
Now, this is what scares me :)

It may be necessary for you to revert the custom templates, or otherwise check that they fully support vBulletin 3.8.3. If you do not do this, some sections of vBulletin may not function! - Are you sure you want to revert the template called 'footer'?

how can I check this
