I figured I'd try to install this on 3.7.3 to see if it works...

I installed it, and went straight to the options to pick which forums/boards i wanted it to be applied to.

I changed it from what it was defaulted to, to a board in the staff only section.

Immediately, whenever i tried to open a thread in the boards that used to have the article system, it wouldn't open the thread. (see second picture in attachment.)

Also, across the top of every page there is an error message. (First picture in attachment.)

I realize this is a 3.8 mod, but i just thought I'd let you know what happened when I installed it on a 3.7 board.

Suggestion: An enable/disable option in ACP option.

Another GREAT mod Banana !!!

We LOVE it, Installed and Marked for MOTM

Just a couple of issues.

When we go back to edit a article, the editor window extends over the postbit, and looks kinda crappy. ( I can live with that )

Can we reduce postbit to just Username and avatar, and perhaps a link underneath with the amount of Articles they have created. Their rating etc.

Cheers Big Ears

Another problem, when a article has more than 1 page worth of replies, the first poster on the second page appears as if they have written the article like the main article postbit style.

Hope this can be fixed :)

Thank you.

bananalive,

ugh, this "most read" and "most commented" problem turned out to be more prosaic than i thought and it shouldn't have anything to do with character sets or whatever. it's that you're using af_articlesmallbit template in the script and it's absent in the product file. ;) no wonder it works only in your development environment. ;)

bananalive,

uh, an while poking around script's guts i got a suggestion: it would be good to have title length limit configurable instead of hardcoded 25 characters. it pretty much depends on style and font used so in some cases 25 characters can be too long and in some it can be too short. i mean title length for "most read" and "most commented" blocks, that is.

I would install but I am too confused about how this works. Please try to be more thorough in the description and please also note whether this is compatible with 3.6/3.7 boards.

My main question is what this does other can create an "article" section. I want to install but not until I know the exact functionality. Does this allow me to take stickies in forums and make them into articles? Or do I have to create a sub-form for every post I want to be an article?

Any clarification welcome.

It basically modifies the display of a forum and the threads in that forum. The forum list is replaced with this (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=97992&stc=1&thumb=0&d=) and the thread view is modified to look like this (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=97993&stc=1&thumb=0&d=).

I have not tested in on vb v3.6 or vb3.7

Sub-forums are the categories for the articles to be posted in.

Creating an article is just posting a new thread in the article forum.

A couple of suggestions for this wonderful mod...

- An Option to choose how many articles will be visible in the directory.

- An Option not to keep the article sticky in every comment page

Also I have encountered a problem with BBcodes if they are used in the beginning of an article. You see the actual code in the directory and not the BBcode result.

Great mod ...Installed! :)

In Firefox, the alignment looks great, but when using IE8...

- the alignment centers all the text, so I manually corrected it by modifying the "af_articles" template.

- The first thread template looks great in FireFox as well, but the user info has a wide blank space to the right of the text/avatar.

Have you looked at your mod using IE8?

Again, thanks for taking the time and creating a nice mod. :up:

bananalive,

another suggestion: make number of displayed "most read"/"most commented" configurable, that would be good.
also, can you add an option to "link" an article to an existing thread upon creation? like this: user adds some useful post in other forum and i would want to store this info to be viewable as an article. i can move or copy this thread to articles forum but that's too inconvenient, if copied there will be two sets of comments with no viable way to merge them, if moved it will reside in articles with only a link in old forum and link can't be sticky. i would like it to be vice versa, the post itself in old forum and a link to it in articles, clicking it opening the post as an article. this way it can be very user friendly and convenient, moderators still having access to the whole thread to weed out unneeded comments and on the other hand, the useful info still easily accessed via articles section. could make a great "knowledge base" or "faq" mod for technical boards and such.

and, um, well... if that's possible it would be also great to have some "nominate for knowledge base" mechanism in threads, like "report this post" but for good posts that deserve to be put in articles section. ;)

nohuhu
04-23-2009, 01:53 PM
bananalive,

also i found the bug that prevented article threads from being displayed with af_firstpost and af_comment templates: in "Alter Postbit" plugin, you forgot to import $vbulletin variable and it was inaccessible. changing plugin's first line from global $counter, $articleforum; to global $counter, $articleforum, $vbulletin; solved the problem.

I'm not trying to show off...

I will try and post the templates tomorrow...because they will certainly need to be cleaned up, I'm not very neat at this sort of thing. I can get the results I need but the chances are it will fail all sorts of validators. This is why I never, ever release anything formally and never will.

The avatars in that screenshot require a couple of changes to one of the plugins. And I had to create a second version of $thread[preview] because I just couldn't make the normal one parse anything....I am sure a better coder than me could sort that in a more efficient way.

Just a question on the Display options
I've created a category and one forum
Posted articles aok, but they appear in the wrong order (By thread start time I believe), even though I set the forums themselves to sort by "Thread title" and "Ascending", they still appear in the wrong order, you have to manually change your preference to Thread title/Ascending

Ok, I got around that by editing the article.php file

$sqlsortorder = 'ASC';
$order = array('asc' => 'selected="selected"');
$vbulletin->GPC['sortorder'] = 'asc';

(I changed the DESC entries to ASC) heh

Quick question. My first posts have attached images -- but I still don't see any thumbs like in the screenshots posted?

A few others have asked the same question, is this a working feature? I'd absolutely love to get those thumbs working...

First of all I want to thank you very much for this great addon. It perfectly fits our community needs as a bunch of people started some "newsagency" for our forum.

As we are a german community I had to translate the addon. I thought maybe someone else could take an advantage of this translation as well.

Thanks again :)

First Post/ comment issue will be fixed in next version.

Great thanx!

which bbcode is not displaying in the article?

For example I use a custom BBcode to re-arrange the article image in top left or right corner inside text. The BBcode is used at the beginning before text in the article. So in the articles page you see the link inside the BBcode tags and not the image. I assume it is the same if you use other bbcodes (youtube) for example as a part of the text.

I don't know if its possible to be fixed. It would be best not to show BBcodes in the articles page at all.

RustedBucket

For those that would prefer the full sized image to show up in the article display (ie: post display) instead of the thumbnail when using the ATTACH bbcode do the following:

In file: includes/class_bbcode.php
Around line: 1867

Find:

if ($attachment['thumbnail_filesize'] == $attachment['filesize'] AND ($this->registry->options['viewattachedimages'] OR $this->registry->options['attachthumbs']))
{
$attachment['hasthumbnail'] = false;
$forceimage = true;
}

Change it to:

//if ($attachment['thumbnail_filesize'] == $attachment['filesize'] AND ($this->registry->options['viewattachedimages'] OR $this->registry->options['attachthumbs']))
//{
$attachment['hasthumbnail'] = false;
$forceimage = true;
//}

This should only affect the ATTACH bbcode display and it will affect it on all forum posts.

Not really sure how to integrate this or make a plugin out of it, feel free to enhance it.

Sweet dude!

I got another problem. On the article.php page, for some reason when the thumbnail is displayed it also shows the attachment id next to it. This ONLY happens if I use the paper clip to add an attachment inline. If I add just normal attachments it grabs the first one and displays the thumbnail fine. Does that make sense? For the life of me I can't figure out why it's doing it.

RustedBucket

I've reverted those templates, reupped the articles.php file and VB files, it's still doing it. When I look at the contents of the $thread array $thread[preview] looks like this:
[preview] => [ ATTACH ]840[ /ATTACH ] Body of the text is here

It appears that when $thread[preview] is display the attach bbcode are being removed but not the contents between them. I'm thinking it's probably something in the core VB code and not necessarily articles.php but for the life of me I can't figure it out.

Should do, i haven't tested it though.

It works fine BUT

It doesn't integrate well. If you use a wrap around integration page you get two instances of the navbar.

Where can we edit out the articles navbar entry so only the advanced navbar appears?

Also I have trouble visiting the forum from the forum list via IE 7 it times out. Yet everything works fine in Firefox and also in IE7 if you use the articles navbar link. I have sorted this by turning off visibility to the forum in the forum lists.

Not a biggie BUT it conflicts w/ the Chief First Post mod. If you select to hide certain parts of postbit it will mess up the display (in the forums, not in the articles.php) and the 2nd post of every page will be similar to the first which it should not. I'll see about fixing it when I have spare time but uber busy.
