Before I attempt this I wanted to ask if this will adversely affect something. What i want to do is change all instances of 'Tags' with 'Tickers' for my users as we want stock tickers to show for posts rather than tags. I took a look in the adminCP at find/replace in phrases and it looks like this can be done out of the box.

Can anyone comment if that will work like this? I don't want instances of Tags cropping up down the road...

It will work as long as you catch all the phrases with "tag" in them. Also be weary of modifications that do not use phrases (or add phrases of their own).

Thanks dismounted.

So in your opinion I should be ok doing the find/replace in phrases? I was going to replace all instances of 'tag' with 'ticker' and 'tags' with 'tickers.'

Again appreciate the assistance :)

If you want to preserve the default phrase and only use "tickers" in certain forums, you might want to consider setting up a new phrase for "tickers/Tickers" and then put a template conditional in wherever the Tags phrase is in your templates. The conditional would specify which forums to use either phrase. Here's a good link to a list of conditionals (http://forum.vbulletinsetup.com/f18/vbulletin-template-conditionals-list-2185.html) and how to use them.

Thanks for your input Arkham! That's a novel way to approach it and I think I will try that. I'm surprised nobody has tried something like this and made a plugin.

Will report back how it goes ;)

Phrases were created so that you could modify them... There is no need to "preserve" the default phrases (you can restore these at any time if need be).

Yes, I'm aware of that. I've changed several site-wide phrases thanks to that functionality.

But if someone wants to use different phrases in different forums, eg "Book Review" in a books forum, and "Thread" in discussion forums, the conditionals will allow you to pick and choose which standard or custom phrase you display on a per-forum basis.

If "ticker" is going to replace "tag" in every forum (or wherever "tag" will be displayed), then simply changing the standard phrase is the best option. For instance, I've changed "Prefix" site-wide to "Category".
