Edits to the template should only be a problem if you removed the template hook code.

Check that you have enabled this mod in the forum you are viewing threads from. If that doesn't solve it you can enable manual placement through the options.

How do you enable each forum as i can only see enable threads ID not forum ID in settings, i also have a modded style and i get no images either

The option is in the forum settings (very end). There is also a bulk manager area in your admincp.

You would have to modify the mod to use different tables or add more fields.
Could anyone help me with that?

Ted,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Somehow the helpful answers got caught up in Calendars Integration section. Not sure if that's yours or the Calender mod (not seeing that being logical), but I'd really like to take certain categories and make them and all subforums enabled. Not one by one. How can I do this?

What can I do?

There's a bulk mod that lets you enter all forum ids, select forum ids or all forums except select forums. Look for it in the admincp sidebar.

Is there any way to make it intergate with vbcredits?

User can get more credit when receives good rate and losse credit with bad vote?

Thank you in advanced.

Some questions/suggestions.
1) I think it would be useful to allow people to switch the 'helpful answer' functionality on for a particular thread when they create a it. I think this is preferable to allowing people to vote into threads which are not appropriate for voting. E.g. 'You'll never guess who I bumped into on holiday'. It would be a tickbox in the new thread page. Is this doable?

2) Would it be possible to allow people to vote for one post in a thread only? I.e. if they vote for a new post, their previous vote for a different post is removed? That way, if a better answer is posted and people vote for it, the older, less useful post will lose votes and hopefully fall more rapidly below the new post in popularity.

3) Displaying the most helpful answer. How difficult would it be to, if there is a helpful answer voted, display a line under the first post (a bit like the 'Thank you' line in the Post Thank You mod) which shows there is a 'most helpful answer'. The line has the usual category open/collapse button. The button is collapsed by default. When someone clicks the open button, the post is displayed like when you expand/contract a category. So you show the thread like we're used to seeing threads, but if people want to see the most helpful answer, they just click the open button in the line under the first post.

Any of these ideas sound any good?

Possible, sure. It's just not designed to to that.

Yes it would be. This requires one additional SQL check on voting.

The first part is simple enough and already offered. Getting the post to show up directly is tricky since you have to query and build it which seems redundant. Why not just link to it directly and avoid the server load?

Interesting stuff that I'll definitely consider after building the 4.0 version.

Server load will be something to consider. If the answer is on the same page, will the user just be scrolled down to it using a # link? That would be the most efficient.
Otherwise, providing a link to the best answer means people will click the link to open a new page. And that had got to use more server resources than the additional query to present the answer under the first post?

Yes and no. The load for the user who clicks it wil be higher but the overall load will be lower as the script doesn't have to query to get the post for every thread view, just when someone wants to see that answer.

LOL I think that when they realise that 4 is so bug-riddled and server hungry, they'll be so desperate to roll back to their previously installed version that installing plugins will be the least of their worries :) But fair enough.

Congratulations for this hack and thank you very much for it. I find it awesome and until now it works like a dream. I am sure my users will love it.

I'd have a suggestion, because I have a huge number of child boards (over 300) and it is quite difficult to enable the hack on each - it may be useful to have an option to have it activated on all forums from the beginning.

If they click a thumbs up or thumbs down, they will be told they already voted. Do you know why I would be getting this error?

Yes, I have AJAX enabled. The first time I vote on a thread it works great. Says, "1 of 1 members found this helpful." etc...

The script has an option to disable voting on the first post, simply look at the code in the XML file for this trigger (search by variable name) and reverse the condition!

Odd that any host would disable this and not do so in a way that simply took the library out from php which the script checks for.

You can remove the cURL function from the XML script without harming anything.

There is an anonymous tracking feature which is controlled through the admin. Many sites disable it (or at least many more have it installed than the unique count of sites were tracking) but some keep it going and that's where the data comes from.

helpfulanswers.php

How can I get this to display the usernames instead of the post ID's?

You would need to edit the php file to register this variable then call it in the template. It's pretty simple if you just look at the code for the page.

steve71
02-10-2010, 09:00 PM
$vbulletin->db->query_write("
CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `". TABLE_PREFIX ."helpfulpost` (
`postid` INT(10) NOT NULL DEFAULT '0',
`threadid` INT(10) NULL,
`goodrank` INT(7) UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT '0',
`totalrank` INT(7) UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT '0',
`lastvote` INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT '0',
`userid` INT(7) unsigned NULL,
KEY `postid` (`postid`),
KEY `goodrank` (`goodrank`),
KEY `totalrank` (`totalrank`))

Am I close?

Got it. What you edited is how the table is created. What you need to edit is the first part of helpfulanswers.php that displays them back.

I'm gonna level with you...I'm pretty green when it comes to php :)

This is the part I located:

// sort criteria
switch ($sortfield)
{
case 'rank':
$sqlsort = 'avgrank';
break;
case 'post':
$sqlsort = 'post.title';
break;
case 'forum':
$sqlsort = 'forum.title';
break;
case 'total':
$sqlsort = 'totalrank';
break;
case 'tdate':
$sqlsort = 'lastvote';
break;
default:
$sqlsort = 'avgrank';
}

When I hover over "Helpful Post Ratings"

https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/external/2010/02/44.jpg

As you can see, it has no www. How do I fix that? Is there a template I can edit? A php line code I can change? I know that you used bburl and I have a lot of mods that use that also (they all seem to work correctly on www or nonwww), but that particular part of your script on my site don't seem to be using bburl.

Anyone got the same problem?

This causes you to not be logged in if you log into the website under www

I think I found another bug. Or not.

I set up reputation to allow users to rep 2 times per 24 hours. For helpful answers I set it to rep 5 times per day. However If I use helpful answers 5 times I can't use the rep system.

Also if I use helpful answers on a post, I can no longer use the rep button. It just says you already rep this post.

Why would you expect to be able to do both? If you passed the 2 a day limit with 5 HA posts you'd be locked out.

azn_romeo_4u
02-23-2010, 02:49 PM
I expect to do both as well as some of my forum members because they asked me the same question. Why does HA need to lock out the rep system if it has a lower vote limit?

So you're basically telling them to either use the rep or HA. Meaning pretty much one isn't really needed.

So if I HA twice, I can't use rep at all either. Even though I didn't use rep all day. Get what I'm saying? HA shouldn't have an effect on the 24hr period of the rep especially if you set rep only allowed less than HA.

You don't have to use HA with rep but if you want to use it with rep it will follow the rep settings. You can change this easily in the plugin file but the mod is set to follow the rules you have, not go around them.

I really like this mod, but because my forum is a debating forum I want to change the text at the bottom of each post from

'Did you find this post helpful?'

To

'Agree with this post?'

Any ideas how I can change the text? Simple explanation please - not very computer literate!!

Just search your vbulletin phrases for the text you want to change and change it.

Thanks for this add-on!

Is there a way to make it more minimalistic and just show the following if you haven't rated the post (note the 'Rate:' there). The <thumbs up> and <thumbs down> icons are then 'clickable':

Rate: <thumbs up> (#) 10 <thumbs down> (#) 20

when user clicks say the <thumbs up>, ajax removes 'Rate:' and flashes the "<thumbs up> 10" (or just the "10") and replaces it to "11" and both icons are not 'clickable' anymore as so:

<thumbs up> 11 <thumbs down> 20

Doable?

Thanks.

So, what's the best advice to someone adding this mod for the first time? Which version should I use?

Unfortunately I have not been able to duplicate your bug, nor have I seen it reported recently by anyone else, so it's very hard to track down. helpfulanswers.php isn't really where I've been focusing my efforts, perhaps someone else will come along and extend it to be more useful for you.

I think it would be neat if the vote average was below a certain value it would lock the thread.

this way it would help and allow for a community to self moderate and give the power back to the people.

Certainly possible and not all that hard. Of course you'd want to consider how many votes are needed and you have to factor in malicious users too. If there's enough support I can add in a module to do this.

Yes I know that. I'm not sure why that person felt the need to post that though since nobody was complaining, I was just inquiring on an update. Personally I really dislike 4.0 and the unnecessary changes to how certain things work. To me it seems like it just made things harder to do for no reason whatsoever. The new variables are more confusing for PHP coders AND for non-coders, in my opinion.

Interesting idea but it wouldn't be needed if the posts that received a certain amount of negative votes were collapsed. What if the first post was great and just SOME of the posts in the thread were really unhelpful and got a lot of negative votes, would it still be fair to have the thread locked? It's too easy to abuse.

I've heavily modified this mod on my forum to add lots of new stuff but the collapsible posts feature is the only thing I haven't figured out how to do.

I'm traveling all week but will get this done asap. Hopefully next weekend. And of course documented in a way that you can include it without having to upgrade... The collapse feature is a new bit of code but overall its looking like just 2 new templates, one or two if statements and some variables.

the reputation weightage doesn't seem to work for negative rep. I've set the weightage to 10% of rep power. But when members give a negative rating, it reduces by 1 reputation point regardless of the power of the member giving the negative rating.

can you pls check that?

Ok boys & girls. Here's the moment many of you have been waiting for / begging for / hitting me over the head about... collapsed negative posts just like in the vB4 version!

To update just upload the new XML file and check your settings. You'll see all the needed options to hide negative posts.

Thanks to Simon Lloyd for the vb3 test site! Since I only have his test site I'm considering this beta.

More updates to come soon so let me know any issues or suggestions!

seems awesome, tks Ted!

but think you can share alittle more on this new feature? i checked out the vb4 version and don't find any too.

if the post is collapsed, can users still see it if they want to? what if its the first post of the thread?

tks!

Nice work Ted, even if you uncollapse the post it still appears collapsed when you revisit the thread. Not for me Ted as i don't mind people seeing negative posts (a balance is always good) but how much work would it be to have an admin option to make the post hidden to usergroups {.....,x ,xx, xxx......etc), perhaps an admin option, this way you could have the post hidden if it really isn't needed for your forum from your membership but could still have it indexed by search engines. Maybe, and i know this is probably a huge amount of work, you could have an admin only /hiddenhelpfulanswers.php where there would be a table of posts that admin could visit to change the status or perform admin.

I'll explain more now and get some screenshots up later.

Basically you can set a threshold for votes and any post with a score under that is automatically collapsed. Users can still expand it if they wish to view it, it just doesn't show up until they do.

So for example, you could say that posts with -100 are hidden or posts with -1. You decide.

Unfortunately there's no way to use the default collapse system, hide the post by default and respect the cookie system. It's either expanded by default (like the forum home) or always collapsed on load.

What you're explaining is actually pretty simple to implement. Search engines can still see the posts as it's just javascript that hides them but google is pretty bright and the display:none; attribute may upset it, so it's definitely a good idea.

Would you see this being a user option or just an admin setting?

Would you see this being a user option or just an admin setting?I would have thought that it should be an admin option as then you have complete control over how your board looks, but in the spirit of forums being free and the information on them maybe it should be a user option or maybe a combination....e.g

AdminCp>Usergroups:
Usergroups that can see unhelpful answers:
does not overide above, adds selection to UserCp
Usergroups that can hide/unhide unhelpful answers:

UserCP:
Always display unhelpful posts: Yes No

So, if we are giving control to the user maybe we wouldn't have to use JS (although its a pretty neat way of doing it), perhaps we could use a template conditional for the usergroup that refers to the AdminCp & UserCp setting, like i have said previously im no coder and i'm probably looking at it too simplistic!

Simon Lloyd

As an added Ted, maybe, if you want to use JS then couldn't you build the conditional or whatever to actually display the post or not use display:none for google using the useragent string to recognise it?

Or am i talking complete rubbish? :)

Yes you can but google doesn't have to use the user agent string at all times. I'll add this in as an option.

As far as variables, those are specific to the post. They should show if there are votes on the post.

The variable goodrank and totalrank are about votes on the post. If there's no votes, there's nothing to show. The user does not have to vote for these to work, the post simply must have votes.

Nope. The profile queries the database to get those results and since we don't want one query for every post on a page, they don't work. Down the road I will add another table to store votes per user so they can be shown but this does not exist yet in this add-on.

i just checked and the partial(weighted) score doesn't seem to work too. Say a member's reputation power is 1, and i set the weighted score to 10%, will members get 0.1 rep points? Or is 1 rep point the minimum? Cause many members who voted for a post end up giving 0 rep points.

I can't find it in templates, (including helpful_answers). I found the phrase helpfulanswer_didyoufind, but i can't figure out how to edit it?!

I'm super new to all this. Did i install it wrong or something?? I've spent tuns of time trying to figure out this simple thing. Very frustrated with myself. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

EDIT: So if i uninstall the mod, edit the original "product-helpful_answers" file and reinstall, i can change the text, lol. Does that count??

Sorry if this has been asked,

but wouldn't it be GREAT if we could write something that made the TOP RESPONSE POST be moved to the first page of the thread under first post? Or some way highlight it more than it already is, because top response could be 30 pages deep, no one will see usually.

Any ideas?

You would have to hard hack (edit scripts) to do this. That's why it isn't included in the mod.

There is a tool to show a link to the top post if you chose to use it.

Great Ted, Thanks, this is still a great great mod, working splendidly :)

I did notice a quirk a few minutes ago, it seems the "TOP POSTER" code also shows up in private message postbit as well even though there's no voting going on there. Is there a fix for this or is it something I did? Any way to keep it showing on the Top rated post in the forum but block it from private message pages?

mmllc

by top post code I meant
<if condition="$thread[toppost] == $post[postid]">xxxxxxxxxxxxx</if>

Showing up in private messages. Anyway to block it?

Ok boys & girls. Here's the moment many of you have been waiting for / begging for / hitting me over the head about... collapsed negative posts just like in the vB4 version!

To update just upload the new XML file and check your settings. You'll see all the needed options to hide negative posts.

Thanks to Simon Lloyd for the vb3 test site! Since I only have his test site I'm considering this beta.

More updates to come soon so let me know any issues or suggestions!

I installed 2.0.5, but as far as I can tell the collapse thread option is not there, i downloaded 2.0.1 but do not want to overwrite anything newer and essential. What should I do ?

11133, they are really two different things. Post thanks is substituting and avoiding those "thanks!" posts that waste time. This one can be used as such but is really meant for "helpful answers". I use this one for a site that asks advice from other members and if posts are helpful to them they give it a thumbs up and mark it as helpful.

Just depends on what you are trying to do on your site :)

This is a wonderful modification but I am having an issue (I searched this thread, possibly the terms used were not correct)

If a post is reported that had a helpful rating, and a copy is sent to my staff forum (in which everything is turned off, helpful answers is excluded from the mod forum).. ... and I have checked all settings.... it is showing up on the most helpful page..... as coming out of the Private MOD forum.

Id there anyway to resolve this?

Sorry for the delay.... Yes only when its reported. This means regular member and visitors can see the that we have a private mod forum. Most really don't know.... one member questioned us on it, and thought we were up to something in the private section!... and stated we shouldn't have a section like that.

Disable the addon in the private forums while I look into this.

No, i mean the addon in one forum... If it's disabled how is a post showing up as a top rated one? Only posts voted on show...

Hey Ted,

Don't know why everytime I vote it always display this ~~> Warning: curl_setopt() [function.curl-setopt]: Invalid curl configuration option in [path]/helpfulanswers.php on line 404

It worked prefect before... I'm having this issues once I re-install this hack again.. maybe that's the problem??

Please suggest!

PS. Also, why is there 2 folder helpful that's both 2.0.5? Any differences?

Turn off the tracking feature.

Every version has updates, but I keep older versions up for those wishing to use them.

Where does the on and off tracking feature location? I browse the vboptions helpful settings and didn't see any tracking function.

Also, when downloading your hack 2.0.5.. do I use the "FIRST LEVEL" files or the second inner ones?

Anyways mods and thanks for the support ~> :up:

It's the last option in Helpanswers Settings

Are you referring to: Anonymous Reporting?

If that's the case, I've already set to "No" but still receiving the following display when voting: "Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end in /home/presskin/public_html/helpfulanswers.php on line 498"

I also installed using the "1st Level hack files", hope this is the right/corresponding one..

Please comment.

Have you asked your host to reconfigure Apache to include cURL?, turn off tracking and the problem should go away!

I installed the mod, i set the rights on Linux for the files, but get always a 500 when calling helpfulanswers.php. :(

Small things found so far:

In the 2.05 Zip the files are two times.
In line 18 of helpfulanswers.php a "s" is missing
The version check says that 1.95 is the newest version

Now i have no idea what could be wrong, so i will try the 1.95.

500 error? That's an internal server failure... do you have php compiled as cgi?
