In a future version it would also be helpful to have an option to also enable thread level thumbs up/down ratings, in addition to having them available for posts. This information could then be factored in when prioritizing threads in the sitemap, or for adding to an archive/library section on the forum.

I could look at making something to work with the notifications box I suppose.
Yeh, that would be even better than the PM's!

Not a bad idea but as it would require different tables I may make this as a second addon.

Re 'helpful threads' ...
Not a bad idea but as it would require different tables I may make this as a second addon.
For the moment, rather than a separate addon, could you look at adding an option to 'Display Threads On Top Answers Page?' and just derive the helpfulness of threads from the number/score of the rated posts?
Personally I'm not interested in adding a 'was this thread helpful?' button. Some folk may feel differently, but I think marking helpful posts is already doing that job. Seems like having both is somewhat redundant, and potentially confusing.
But ... I am very interested in being able to show both Post and Thread helpfulness on the Top Answers page.
As a slightly related request ... how about some hooks in 'topanswers'? Before I saw the post I'm responding to, I had just started looking in to adding Top Threads myself, and for this (and other) issues it'd be nice to have a few hooks - the usual vB stuff, with start/prequery/postquery/end.
BTW, great mod.

I don't think that would accomplish the goal. You're not interested in the helpful thread button but some people are. Hence a different mod... similar code but different.

I could do another chart of top threads I suppose.

One other bit of feedback on an already excellent mod:
Within the "helpful answers system" menu in the admin control panel, it would be very helpful to be able to search/list the ratings based not only on who was rated and what they've rated, but also by who *has been rated* and what posts they've received ratings on. I'd think this would be straightforward to enable...

I don't think that would accomplish the goal. You're not interested in the helpful thread button but some people are. Hence a different mod... similar code but different.
The reasons I'd like to see a Helpful Thread system based purely on the ratings of the posts are:
1) We already have Forum Ratings. It's a well known, well understood interface / concept. Replacing this with a Helpful Threads which is separate from Helpful Posts would seem to be reinventing the wheel.
2) It'd one less widget / knob / dial for the user to worry about. If they poke the helpful post button, they would automatically be giving the thread a rating bump. And as a user, this would seem totally natural ... if I found the post useful, then pretty much by definition I'm finding the thread useful (or not, as the case may be). I wouldn't really understand why I would have to go and manually give the thread a rating bump as a separate action.
3) Replacing the existing (and somewhat arbitrary 1 to 5 star) Thread Rating with a numeric Helpful Threads rating derived purely from the combined ratings of the posts in the thread would provide a true measure of how helpful any given thread is.
Perhaps there's a need for a Helpful Threads mod as a separate beastie instead of Helpful Posts ... but if I'm running Helpful Posts, I'd really like that option to replace the existing Thread Rating stuff with a derived value from the sum of the helpful posts. So instead of the rating stars on forumdisplay, I'd see a (sortable) numeric rating column.

Just a quick suggestion...
in the helpfulanswers.php page I removed 'Post 228819 in thread:' from the helpful_answers_top_bit template. My suggestion would be to grab the username to replace that text with. Something like:
Username in ThreadTitle
Users might enjoy seeing who is the most valuable poster.
The other suggestion I have is to enforce the Reputation rules. Right now a user may rate a post with the helpful anwers system and can also rate the same post with the standard Reputation controls in the postbit.

That's working as intended - because the rep system can have a different value ;)

Very easy to change that you can do by editing the templates and adding an inactive (greyed out) icon.

Ted,
I would be interested in that modification as well (the question by dutchbb)
Can you make it so when you hover over the thumb up/thumb down, it changes color from grey out to red or green.
When you click on it, it will show how the votes with numbers.
i can't even get the icons off youtube site ;(

question for Ted
How would i display the difference of $post[goodrank] - $post[badrank].
Ted S
04-17-2009, 03:28 AM
However is simple... it's just a little javascript but doing it will require the grey icons which I can't make right now. If you can get those I can show you how to it all (going to post it up for everyone).
As far as the variables you'd need to grab it in the php code and change the output to activate it.

This addon is a Yes/No or 1-10 scale only. It doesn't evaulate criteria like a user review would.

great mod,I have a question how would I go about showing this in only a certain thread.
I have $helpful_answers located where I want it in my postbit but is there some kind of way like <if condition=code for the thread id so it will only show in that threadID
I know very little about this stuff but it seems like it shouldn't be to hard.

I think I found a bug (is it the same bug people reported earlier?)
When I click a few times on the thumb up button, there is a delay and when it comes back, it has 3 + and the post is duplicated 3 times.
It is weird since you can't remove any of them, remove one will remove all 3.
Update: I have to go to the Rating History backend to remove the ratings. It will also remove the posts automatically.
Anyone else has this problem?

There's no integration with vbplaza in this mod thus it wouldn't assign points. To make this work you would need to identify the code to add to vbplaza and bring that into the appropriate part of the mod.

Nope. There's nothing missing... There's simply different code used. The reputation page pulls in other elements this script doesn't need to pull in and this script pulls in elements it doesn't to insure everything is working properly.
What you would need to do is identify the plugin area vBplaza is calling and add it to the script as is necessary.

Ted you mentioned earlier that in helpfulanswers.php we could print the username to the screen (which would be incredibly nice) but I don't think you are grabbing that from a quick look at the query. You're grabbing the userid though so maybe you could alter the query to reference the userlist table and get the username. Would really tie that page together and make it useful to see at a glance who uses the system.
SELECT post.postid,post.title as posttile,helpfulpost.goodrank,helpfulpost.totalran k,helpfulpost.lastvote,thread.threadid,thread.titl e as title,forum.title as ftitle $helpful_selectby
FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "helpfulpost as helpfulpost
INNER JOIN " . TABLE_PREFIX . "post AS post ON(helpfulpost.postid = post.postid)
INNER JOIN " . TABLE_PREFIX . "thread AS thread ON(post.threadid = thread.threadid)
INNER JOIN " . TABLE_PREFIX . "forum AS forum ON(thread.forumid = forum.forumid)
WHERE goodrank > 0
Also is there anyway you could post the javascript to enhance our thumbs up/down with the greyed out image (I have these)? I would love to test this on my board.

I installed it and tried it out for my forum. Personally I did not find the design well and therefore I decided to stay with normal thread voting and the Thank Post addon. Now I have useless menu entries in the admin menu, which I can not get rid of. :-(

A few things I noticed about the extra variables you provided in your second post
This one used for highlighting the background
<if condition="$thread[toppost] == $post[postid]">background-color:#CCCCCC;</if>
also changes my private messages,I changed the messagearea with a blue background and it does the same thing to my pm message areas
Example (http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/9659/examplepm.jpg)
I fixed it for my board because I only use it for one thread by doing this
<if condition="$thread[toppost] == $post[postid] AND $thread[threadid] == 453">background-color:#375368;</if>
But you might wanna fix it for people who use it for more than I do
also the code to identify top rated post says
<if condition="$threadinfo[toppost] == $post[postid]">This is the top rated post!</code>
Shouldn't it say
<if condition="$thread[toppost] == $post[postid]">This is the top rated post!</if>
That's what worked for me but again it has to be changed or it shows in my private messages

I've released 1.8.0 of this addon which is a small feature release.
The main purpose of this update is to introduce rollover rankings similar to what YouTube uses.
Rollover rankings can be enabled using the ratings dropdown option.
If you enable this option the template helpful_answers_roll will be used in place of helpful_answers. Please re-apply any customizations you may have made.
I have also updated the Top Helpful Answers page to include a new variable postusername as well as some hooks for other modifications.
1.9.0 will be coming next month and will include showing notifications when a post has been rated.

To display the number of helpful posts a member has below their username.
Ted S
04-27-2009, 10:18 PM
Each post is saved as a distinct record so displaying this would require a query for every post (figure 10-50 queries per page which is a bad, bad thing).
The alternative option would be to extend the addon to update a user's profile every time their post is rated to store this.
tpearl5

Hi Ted,
thanks for your work.
There might be a bug in the product file, tho: I tried to install, but the script threw a mysql error at me, saying there was no field "helpfulanswerid" in the fieldset of table "helpfulpost".
I checked and found that there had been no tables installed into my database and thought: Well, of course, there's no field if the tables did not get installed. So I looked at your product file and took out the mysql-CREATEs and created the tables in phpmyadmin.
I tried to install again, and yet again the script threw the same error at me, tho I was pretty sure the tables were created as they were supposed to be. Indeed, there was no such field in helpfulpost. After a closer look at your script, I was pretty sure that the line
SELECT COUNT(helpfulanswerid) as count FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "helpfulpostwas supposed to read
SELECT COUNT(helpfulanswerid) as count FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "helpfulansweri.e., the query was going to the wrong table. After changing this, I had no further problems installing, and the mod works just fine (at least, I did not find any errors up to now).
Another question concerning phrase helpfulanswer_postshavebeen. It reads "{1}'s Posts have been rated good {2} out of {3} times</span>". Is that </span>-Tag really supposed to be there?
Then I did a little modification to the helpful_answers_roll-Template. I was somewhat disappointed that there was no way to have icons when I want to allow only positive ratings (or did I miss something?). So I set the options to "Images - Thumbs with rollover" anyway and changed the template code as follows:
Find:
<if condition="$show['rate_helpfulanswer']">
<strong>$vbphrase[helpfulanswer_didyoufind] <a href="./helpfulanswers.php?do=rate&postid=$post[postid]&rank=1">$vbphrase[helpfulanswer_yesidid]</a></strong>
</if>
Replace with:
<if condition="$show['rate_helpfulanswer']">
$vbphrase[helpfulanswer_didyoufind] <a href="./helpfulanswers.php?do=rate&postid=$post[postid]&rank=1" <if condition="$vboptions[disable_ajax] != 2"> onclick="return helpfulanswers_rate($post[postid], 1);" </if> rel="nofollow" onmouseover="document.post_$post[postid]_up.src='images/buttons/ha_thumbsup.gif';" onmouseout="document.post_$post[postid]_up.src='images/buttons/ha_thumbsup_gray.gif';"><img name="post_$post[postid]_up" src="images/buttons/ha_thumbsup_gray.gif" width="11" height="20" border="0" alt="$vbphrase[helpfulanswer_yes]" align="absmiddle" /></a>
<if condition="$show['guest'] AND $vboptions['helpans_guestshow']">
$vbphrase[helpfulanswer_didyoufind]
<a href="./helpfulanswers.php?do=guestrate" <if condition="$vboptions[disable_ajax] != 2"> onclick="return helpfulanswers_rate($post[postid], 1);" </if> rel="nofollow" onmouseover="document.post_$post[postid]_up.src='images/buttons/ha_plus.png';" onmouseout="document.post_$post[postid]_up.src='images/buttons/ha_plus_gray.png';"><img name="post_$post[postid]_up" src="images/buttons/ha_plus_gray.png" width="20" height="20" border="0" alt="$vbphrase[helpfulanswer_yes]" align="absmiddle" /></a>
</if>
It will also show the green thumbsup for posts the user has already rated.

As you discovered there isn't an option to do thumbs up only by removing the thumbs down icon will get you pretty close.

I have posted version 1.8.1 which is a small update release fixing a bug in the installer and a few erroneous HTML tags. Updating is optional.
To upgrade replace the xml file only. No changes were made to any upload files.
Hi Ted,
We installed this hack and it wasn't what we were looking for, so we removed it. However, since then (actually even after we disabled the product and before we removed it), all our regular Vbulletin polls are getting redirected to other threads (either upong voting or through the edit poll function by MODS).
I'm just wondering if there's any part of this hack which would have modified the poll.php file or any of its functions to cause this problem . We did not have this issue before. Your help would be greatly appreciated as we're getting a lot of grif from our members now. :(

I am new enough to vbulletin that this error could have been pilot error on my part, but I am posting the patch here in case it is useful to anyone else.

Sorry to hear the addon wasn't right for you however there is nothing that should impact polls with this addon. Due to the method used for plugins once you removed the addon all code related to other files was removed from plugin locations.
I would suggest uploading the poll.php file again and testing a new poll to see what is incorrectly linking. If you want to PM me I may be able to try and help you run down the issue.

Hi, great Hack!
There's some knowed issue if used with Post Thank You Hack?
There are no known conflicts that prevent either addon from working however because both addons use the same template hook there have been style complaints. If you dislike the style appearance you can get around this by enabling the manual template placement option with this addon and placing a variable in your postbit template where you want the ratings to show.

Last question before install....
I don't have seen the layout of the 10 point rank system....
This mode, is like the hack used in the vbseo.com forum , under the staff posts? "Have i helped you? Please rate my support"
In that forum, if anybody go to click on the link "Please Rate my support" , is showed a loading image that open a new part with the default vbulletin stars rating for the votes.....

Just installed 1.8.2 and here are my comments
1) After voting, the ajax does not seem to reload the result automatically. it will show 2 gray thumbs. If i reload the page, the correct result will display.
2) I disable guest voting so under every post, there is some small spacing where the "did you find helpful" located.
I thought we took care of that issue a few versions back.
Nice job as always.

Ted, your fix (the latest version) fixed my problem 100%, so thank you.
I did have a few suggestions, notably on the helpfulanswers.php page:
1. For the layout, remove the "Post xxxxxin thread *threadtitle* and change it to "*threadtitle by *username*" linking to the post of course. I know this is possible with a few edits, but I think it gives a more friendly look to the page for users that you might want to consider.
2. Add a filter to the helpfulanswers.php page to allow users to either see the most helpfulanswers by either a time measure (last 24 hours, week, etc) or by a threshold of votes (only answers with 5 +'s or whatever.)
3. Right now the helpfulanswers.php page does not consider usergroup permissions. And while if someone clicks on a thread they can't access and that won't change, they do see the thread title, obviously if there is a private forum with sensitive info, this could be a problem. And I do realize that you can enable/disable on a per forum basis, but I really would like this enabled through out my forum.
Anywho, this is a great modification and I just wanted to share this with you as food for thought. I am actually using this in replacement of the traditional reputation system. Thanks for such a great mod Ted.

Actually there's a better way to reduce server load with this...
Open up the XML file and find:
if($this->registry->options['helpans_hidefirst'] AND $this->post['postid'] == $this->thread['firstpostid']){
$show['helpfulanswer'] = false;
$show['rate_helpfulanswer'] = false;
}
Change that to:
if($this->post['postid'] != $this->thread['firstpostid']){
$show['helpfulanswer'] = false;
$show['rate_helpfulanswer'] = false;
}
Now only the first post will show ratings.

1. For the layout, remove the "Post xxxxxin thread *threadtitle* and change it to "*threadtitle by *username*" linking to the post of course. I know this is possible with a few edits, but I think it gives a more friendly look to the page for users that you might want to consider.

And while if someone clicks on a thread they can't access and that won't change, they do see the thread title, obviously if there is a private forum with sensitive info, this could be a problem. Good ideas as well. I will have to look at the impact on load of each. I did play with the time limit before and stopped. Something to revist.

Is there a way to display which threads have the highest total votes in all their posts?
Has anyone created a CMPS module for showing the results?

It doesn't seem to be awarding reputation points for marking a post as "helpful". I have ensured my settings are set correctly.
Is there a way to check and see if is indeed working properly?
Related but different: Does rebuilding reputation via the Maintenance manager also factor in 'helpful' posts? Also, with the Post Thanks mod, I can see in the Reputation Comments manager when a post has been thanked, and users can see it in their UserCP as well in the reputation section; does this mod include similar functionality?

No. Reputation does not seed back into helpful answer ratings.

There is an admin log for all helpful answer ratings. There is not a user log to see who has rated their post.

Nope.
No. Reputation does not seed back into helpful answer ratings.
So if I were to rebuild reputation, all of the points accrued by posts marked as helpful would be essentially lost - permanently?
There is an admin log for all helpful answer ratings. There is not a user log to see who has rated their post.
Can this be turned into a feature suggestion, to work just like the Post Thanks hack? ;)
And thank you for the prompt response; it's something that not too many coders offer anymore.

Not sure why you would think that would happen. The two systems do not overlap so rebuilding one will not reset the other.

Please send me a link or image of what you're thinking of so I can see how this mod would produce something similar.

And for the rep system, I'll post an updated script that lets you debug.
EagleNick
05-30-2009, 12:45 PM
Ted, to follow up, this definitely isn't working properly.
- I checked my profile and have had my posts marked as helpful 14 times: Nick's Posts have been rated good 14 out of 14 times.- I checked my UserCP and have 46 reputation points.
- I checked the Reputation Comments log in the AdminCP for all reputation given to me. On three occasions, I have been reputed earning me 2, 15, and 19 points. Adding in the fact that all users start out with 10 points, this equates to 46. Therefore, I am not earning any reputation points by having my posts marked as helpful.
- So maybe my settings aren't configured properly. You tell me:
1- http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr112/NickR25/screen1-1.png
2- http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr112/NickR25/screen2-1.png
I am baffled as to why this isn't working properly.
Another issue we're having is that post authors cannot see the rating on their posts. I have self-rating disabled, but shouldn't I be able to see, "2 of 2 users found this post helpful" on my own posts? Or is that not a feature?
Ted S

I'm not sure what's going wrong so let's try debugging.

There's 3 things that would cause the code not to activate:
1 - Reputation is not enabled in your admin.
2 - Reputation in the mod is is not enabled.
3 - You're rating your own posts.
This version will tell us what's up.

Tiny gripe ...
If negative ratings are not enabled, icons aren't used for the "Yes I did" button (i.e. it ignores the Rating Display setting in ACP).
Of course we can tweak that ourselves (near the bottom of the helpful_answers template) ... just seems like it shouldn't matter if negative ratings are enabled or not ... If I select 'icons' for the Rating Display, I still want a Green Thumb.

Yep, it works now! It even shows up in the "View Reputation Comments" section of the Reputation manager in the AdminCP. :cool:
Is there a way to make it go back and add the reputation points for all "marked as helpful" posts, because only posts marked as helpful after I installed the updated/debugging version give points. If not, then no biggie. At least it's working now.
So now we just need a version that doesn't show the code when rating a post. :)

It would be possible to update posts retroactively but I haven't tested a script to do this and wouldn't want to do so "live". I'd suggest rolling from now forward.
Look for the official update in a few minutes (without the debug lines).

1.8.3 Has been released.
This is a small bug fix which addresses two issues:
- Fixes problems with the reputation module not working
- Fixes problems with disabling negative voting and using different rating styles
To update just upload the xml file to your Admin CP. No changes have been made to script files.

Also...it would seem the Forum title and Average Rating column content is not centered in the column. Can ya fix this?
I also have one last question. I'd like to include a "top of page image" within the table that calls the info for user votes on a thread/post. What do I edit to include this?

In helpfulanswers.php find:
SELECT post.postid,post.title as posttile,helpfulpost.goodrank,helpfulpost.totalran k,helpfulpost.lastvote,
thread.threadid,thread.title as title,thread.postusername as postusername,forum.title as ftitle $helpful_selectby

and change it to:
SELECT post.postid,LEFT(post.title,35) as posttile,helpfulpost.goodrank,helpfulpost.totalran k,helpfulpost.lastvote,
thread.threadid,thread.title as title,thread.postusername as postusername,forum.title as ftitle $helpful_selectby

Hi, what I need to do to have some link in nav bar to most rated posts?
in your navbar template you can use the following:
find<if condition="$show['member']">
<td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="usercp.php$session[sessionurl_q]">$vbphrase[user_cp]</a></td>
</if> and underneath add<if condition="$show['member']">
<td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="http://www.yoursite.com/forum/helpfulanswers.php">Helpful Answers</a></td>
</if> Hope that helps!

Thanks.
FYI, I just wrote a "Helpful Answers for vbCredits" mod, first cut of it is here:
http://www.vbcredits.com/forum/showthread.php?p=17117#post17117
It's something I needed for myself, but I saw somebody else had requested it, so I posted it. I'm not that wild about supporting it in the long run, though. Once it is debugged and any additional features added, would you be interested in taking it over?

Hugh,
Thanks for releasing this! I don't work with vBcredits so while I'd love to help out I'm probably not the best person to lend any support on this versus someone who knows that tool.

Just hide the lowest post or maybe more control...
- hide posts that are negative
- set a min votes before hiding
- let a user unhide
is it possibile with the current version of Helpful Answers?

Possible with some work on your end, not out of the box.

Just noticed your uninstall code is missing the closing ` on table names in the DROP statements.

There's really nothing to it. Basically just a simple product XML, with a single plugin on one of your hooks that looks at your $helpful setting, and either adds or deducts X amount of credits for the poster, and adds Y amount to the logged on user (i.e. incentive for using Helpful Answers). Plus the usergroup settings for the X and Y values.
Ah well, it was a long shot anyway. I'm just being lazy. :)

hello, thanks for this great hack
i have a little question, i would like to know if its possible to show the usefull post under the first post of the thread, so people will have the best answer fast and they don't have to read the all thread to see all members ideas
here is a little screen of what i was thinking about, sry for my english, it's not my native language.

You could do this with some template hacks. The variables to show this information are all in the first post.
I will probably add something like this to version 1.9

You can use template conditionals to limit the display to just one thread.

hello, thanks for the answer
i think i must add this code somewhere in the postbit ??
<if condition="$thread[toppost] == $post[postid] AND THIS_SCRIPT == 'showthread'">This is the top rated post!</code></if>
but i don't know where i must add it so it will be shown under the first post
maybe you can help me ? or i will wait for the 1.9 version ;)

Thank you for your speedy response. Im not much of a coder but I will google what you mean and try to do this.
The code I am inserting into my postbit is
<if condition="$thread['forumid'] == 703">
<div class="smallfont">
$helpfulanswers
</div>
</if>
703 is the id of the thread but it wont show in the thread. Am I doing this right?
//EDIT//
I figured out I had to use this code to target the specific threadid
<if condition="$thread['forumid'] == '38' && $thread['threadid'] == '703'">
<div class="smallfont">
This is a test...
</div>
</if>
That works but when I add the variable $helpfulanswers it doesn't show. I need help on actually getting the variable to show up. The test message appeared only in that thread.

Correct. I can enter any text and it shows up so I know i have the coding right but the $helpful_answers variable doesnt work.

The attached version 1.9.0 beta adds an option to display a message under the first post about which post is the top post and links to it.
You can set a minimum number of votes before the message shows up (so it isn't there for 1 vote posts).
This option will add a query.
To upgrade upload the new plugin file and upload/helpfulanswers.php
Note: Upgrading will take a few minutes as each post with voting history has to be modified to add the threadid it is associated with.

Attention Helpful Answers users,
I have begun adding some new functionality for version 1.9 starting with a message that will show under the first post linking visitors to the most helpful post.
1.9 also includes a number of small bug fixes and cleans up some of the code.
This is a work in progress and labeled beta as it will be evolving. To upgrade upload the attached php files and install the product file. Updating will take a few minutes as changes are made to every rated post in the system. For larger sites with more than 25,000 votes I suggest running this during non-peak hours.

Strange.
Try disabling the auto placement and confirm that the rating box shows up. Let me know what the results are.

1. Change the phrase helpfulanswer_mosthelp_post to
Members of {1} have rated post {2} as the most helpful. <a href="./showpost.php?p={2}">Skip right to it!</a>
2. The box is controlled by template helpful_answers_mosthelp_post
