Radio and TV Player 3.8.x

This will add a fully featured Radio and TV Streaming Player with stations library to your forum.

Features:
- Users can add / delete / edit own stations (controlled by usergroup permissions)
- Users can have a favorite stations list
- Report broken / duplicate stations links
- Totally coded in AJAX (no page reloads)
- Plays Windows Media Player, Real Player and Quicktime streams
- Shows user's favorites and last played station in profile page
- and much more...

Installation is easy. You need to upload some files, import a product, import the default stations (if you wish) and make only two manual navbar template edits, one for the popup link and another for the javascript that opens the popup. This is optional and the link can be put elsewhere, just remember to also add the javascript on the same page.

This mod is "Re-usable Code", meaning you can modify and release your modified version.

You are responsible for the streams you add to your website. The mod author doesn't take responsibility for possible copyright infringements in some countries by using some stations.

Arabic and Chinese don't work with Ajax, so this mod won't work, sorry.

This mod took roughly two weeks to code, so it should be somewhat good and bug free :)

Planned features for vB 4 (note that the features are my wish list, and may not be feasible so they are not final)

- on/off switch for each station info
- check if Radio and TV text on navbar is hardcoded, and make it not it's not hardcoded, it's the phrase "rs_radiostations"
- make a system where admins can add they own players (don't forget support for flash, embed and object, just let them add the whole code with replacement variables)
- hide profile info if no radio has been listened or no favorites
- put javascript in a .js
- deleting station in favorites creates a ghost favorite entry

Hmm a little HTML knowledge helps, as you will be looking at website's source code (right-click + show source) to get URLs. They are usually inside <object> or <embed> tags in the format url="http://www.domain.com/stream.asx", which would be pretty much an example of URL to add to the mod. Hope this helps.

Well, I found the source code for the sites. But, the code for the feeds are not on the main site codes nor is it on the "Listen Now" feeds. How do you get the feed code from the radio station sites? Do I look for it through the main site source code or go somewhere else to find it?

Listen Now opens a window? You need to get the url from the window that plays the station.

Some sites uses tricks to hide the urls.

I am sure this has been brought up before somewhere. Could the random station played when the page loads be pulled from the users favorites list? If they don't have a favorite saved then pull a random station from the main list?

This is how I am doing it...
open windows media player on your desktop.

go to the radio tuner

click on internet radio

choose your genre (show all)

Find a station to listen to. and click on play

After it starts to play, click on you library. Then double click on "now playing" icon, not the tab. It should show you the radio station. Right click and choose properties. Copy the URL and then add it as a new station.

000Audio.com has over 80 station to choose from. And there are other places that you can add too.

Anyway, that is the way I did it.

When i disable vbadvanced its working, but with vb 3.7.4 it was working with vbadvanced and i tried (i think) about everything.

So if this means i have to choose between those 2, i'm dissapointed and have to remove the radio:(

so......I've asked this before about adding other players.

I'd like to add the embed code for jw player. I've found the templates. I have no use for the real player template, which I think it would be best if that were used in this instance to re-configure.

If somebody can reconfigure this code for the jw player that would be great.

After a long time, I have installed some mod. This one's really cool, love it.

Though it requires some makeover, most of the phrases are all running in small letters, has over 100 xhtml errors.

It's not easy and there's no real way to instruct how to encapsulate the URL in order to embed. Mostly all of the big name streaming sites use different variations to their stream url.

Some just use the name of the stream, some use the raw rmtp string, some include both the channel and an id.

Unfortunately theres no real "easy" way.

I made a symbolic USD 10 donation right away.

I do not have the time or ability to spend the time to find and set up a file with all the available TV stations.

I would be willing to pay USD 100 for a really really good file of a lot of the available TV stations that is available. Perhaps others are willing to pitch in as well. I hope this can inspire someone to get going on making this file. It is a bit tedious work.

I am adding streams now, it is tedious.

If you find a stream you can right click on the actual window of the stream. "Properties" - will give you the url for the stream and you can index that.

I just uploaded all the channels partnering with Livestation.com - but they will only play for 15 minutes and then livestation will pitch to download their application.
This is tedious work! :)

You can also get started by selecting View>Source or right click on the page and select view source. From there look for the .swf, .flv extensions in the code or the player embed code. From there you can play with reconstructing the URLS once you've established they work in the mod.

How can I set that link to point to the proper location or remove that instance from the navbar unless in the forum?

Yes, seems to be. I just installed it yesterday and went to read emails and saw I started to get warnings. What I have not determined is what the users are doing to create that error. No one has complained about having an issue yet the errors come; you can be sure that if something wasn't working I would hear about it... :rolleyes:

I posted a pic. I assume those are the categories you speak of? I did not do any manual database edits. As far as when, I really am not sure. There have been not reports of users having issues other than a few inoperative links. It seems to work overall.

Noticed while viewing that this particular site showed to our users as inoperative. It works for me fine but according to firebug (a FF addon) this is the information it shows.

Hi Dream - great work on this mod - its a hit with users.

A couple of issues im seeing:

1) m3u streams only seem to work with setting of RealPlayer, not quicktime (and unfortunately realplayer doesnt seem to work on my mac)
2) m3u streams launch two player instances in the popup, both playing slightly out of time
3) Stream stops playing on switching focus

Im on Linux at the moment - havent had chance to test if issues 2 and 3 are isolated to Linux or other platforms also

Just confirmed that 2 and 3 are not solely related to platform - had users report the same on Vista too.

Also several users hare experiencing complete firefox crashes while using this,

First of all, I enjoyed this mod in my 3.7.4 version of VB.

I upgrade to 3.8 and now i'm getting this error:

I love this mod! Is there a way to get 'now playing' information? I did some poking around myself, but came up empty. Since you know more about it than I do I figured I'd just ask. I *really* want now playing in the postbit - in terms of people sharing their musical tastes with others it would be a huge factor.

Edit 2: Aha! For some reason my windows media player plugin was disabled in firefox. :)

i added the radioandtv.php as a link in my site navigation box... when i click it though it opened the player in the same window... which is obviously not what i want... i want to open in a new window... it used to... but when i changed our theme it stopped doing it.. i also have the script code in my navbar header... any idea?

I have installed all the files and the player works great. Unfortunatly I cannot seem to add single stations to the player.
I have read this entire thread, I have checked the usergroup permissions. I have tried everything I can think of which really isnt that much lol.
I enter the correct info in the prper area to add a station in the popup window. Click the add button and nothing happens.

Usually it takes some digging (source code for example). If the player is in flash format then you're in trouble. :(

We have up and running, a little diffcult but have about two pages of radio stations with more being added daily.

I wish 4.0 was out already, so I could be updating this for it. Felt a little twitch to do it now :D

Kier shown some of the new vB style today. I guess Radio and TV could get a full main tab all to itself! We'll see when I get hands on with it.

I'm also planning on ditching the AJAX for the list of stations, and have it open new pages instead. Also instead of showing everything on the same page, separate things into pages. When opening a station for playing, a popup just with the player and info about it will be opened. So you can navigate through the stations list, categories, settings on one window while listening to (or watching) stations on the popup window separated.

I'm also planning on changing the filename from radioandtv.php to streaming.php, so everyone can call it whatever they want on the navigation (Radio and TV, Radio, Player, Stations, Streaming etc) without the need to change the file name which can have random effects on code. Also those station categories will then be able to get indexed by SEs, being pages and not AJAX.

Also with the new CMS widgets, I'm planning on working on a Radio widget which would appear on a right sidebar on the site, where you can navigate and pop stations for listening pleasure from there. That could be cool.

Thats pretty much it I think, what I plan on doing for 4.0.

What I didn't understand is how to make a .xml file like they have in post #3. Those stations are good, but I was actually looking for one's in my local area.

Here is what I found that may help someone.

Note: Below is how I stream audio. You may do it differently. If so, please post it in this thread so we will have different ways of doing it.

How to stream Audio from your favorite Radio Stations:

1. Goto http://www.thestreamcenter.com/

2. Click on your state which you want to find. I will use Colorado since that is the one I wanted to find. Example I got for Colorado: http://www.thestreamcenter.com/pda/?state=CO

3. I wanted ?Alice105.9?, so DON?T click on that. Click on the button on that line that says ?Listen Live?

4. Click the ?Open? button

5. Click on the file in the in the ITunes box, and right click on ?Get Info?

6. You will see a block called ?Edit URL?. Click that and highlight the URL.

7. Now paste it into your player?

If your talking about post #3, yea I had a bunch of those that didn't work, that's why I went and found the stations myself... Another good one is this site. Click on the streaming screen, properties, and copy the URL...

you need to change the radio link to an absolute link in your navbar template, like http://www.yoursite.com/forum/radioandtv.php

I uploaded the files to their perspective folders and installed the product xml, however as your instructions say
Reload your Admin Control Panel, go to

Radio and TV >> Import / Export Stations

And import default-radio-stations.xml

I'll have to check this out, in the meantime all places where the radio station names are used (and other info that the users can add to stations) need to be surrounded by htmlentities() (which I would think I did).

Also this would only be a problem if you allow other people to add stations, and if it's true of course.

You could disallow everyone to add stations but you for the time being.

I love this mod and have been using it for some time now. the one thing i find it lacking is having each station as its own unique ID for the url. so instead of every station being http://your.site/radioandtv.php it would be http://your.site/radioandtv.php?station=13 or http://your.site/radioandtv.php?station=36 dpending on which station your listening to
