I have fixed this on my forum for vb4. I don't have the thread icon working but it seems to work otherwise.

How would I go about "releasing" my vb4 version? Do I need to get in contact with Coder's Shack, or do we just wait for his instead? I don't really wanna take credit for the plugin or anything, but I'm sure many people are waiting on this for vb4 so if I can help out in any way let me know

For those interested, I will host it on our forum we upgrade to vb4 and test it out on a live forum.

I believe there is a bug in the javascript code

var r=livetopic.$("#postcount"+4+" strong").length>0?livetopic.$("#postcount"+4+" strong")[0].innerHTML:0;

Should be replace by

var r=livetopic.$("#postcount"+d+" strong").length>0?livetopic.$("#postcount"+d+" strong")[0].innerHTML:0;

Hope to see a vBulletin 4 version soon :D

Yeah, this mod author is incredibly unreliable. His paid scripts list features that don't even work, it's only $5 but it's still not cool to take peoples money for things that don't work. He doesn't care and doesn't offer any support for any of it.

I have fixed this mod but vB will not let me post it because it is copyright of Coders Shack. I cannot get a hold of the author so I'm not sure what to do at this point

Is it a total re-write ? or just few fixes?

If it's a total re-write then you may as well claim it for yourself and give the guy credit, if it's a simple fix just tell us The where and what :D

Thanks man, we're all waiting :erm:

In some cases on some Mods I've seen that some Coders Share their Corrected Versions of the Mods with the Author and the Users, for it to be Tested, and they've simply Posted the File, the Author and Users Review it (at their Risk), and the Author Post the Update with the Respective Thanks and Recognitions to the Coder that Shared the Updated Version of the Mod.

I don't think there's something wrong with it. The Author Benefits, the Users Benefit, You Benefit by Sharing the Updated Mod and Getting the Recognitions (from the Users and from the Author if he Access His Account).

It'll be Really Nice to Test the Updated Version of the Mod. I Voted for this Mod as MOTM and It'd really Good to see the Bugs Corrected, some of them that I've Reported too.

My Best Regards.

:)

Guys, enough of this. The developer has not given permission to have a vB4 version of this mod posted. In fact, someone even said he was working on it himself. Anyway, a vB4 version of this mod that isn't written/approved by the developer is not going to get posted in here. End of discussion really.

I think there might be an issue with this if more than one user are logged in from the same IP. I am able to use this mod, so long as no others are logged in from the same IP viewing a live topic. If there are more than one, it locks the entire site up.

When I was testing this mod, I had one user using one browser, the other user using another browser. Obviously we were using the same IP. I never had any problems. So, your issue could be a server issue and not a modification issue.

interesting - That is how I tested it - same computer, different browsers logged in as seperate users. if I logged in to the computer at home as one user and then as the other from where I was it worked just fine...I was able to reproduce at will using the same IP on the remote location.

Not sure what the deal is with that....

I've been having issues with livetopic for the past week, with no solution.

After changing servers, and moving databases... Live Topic stopped working. The little livetopic image on the thread title shows up, but the threads never update when some one posts in it. You have to refresh for new posts to show up. Any reason for this?

I've installed and reinstalled a couple times, with no luck.

There are text editors for programmers that will tell you the character number you are at, google for 'advanced text editor' or such... off hand I don't know of one that does for sure though... I use Notepad2 but it has line numbers, not by character.

because on large forums it is a huge CPU sink. we had to enable it for only select users so the CPU load wouldn't spike

I'll grant you my forum isn't as busy as yours but it actually seemed to lower our resource usage as refreshing an entire page took more of a toll on the sever then getting a single post via AJAX... :confused:

well you have to consider how many people are constantly refreshing. livetopic will do a 'ping' every 5 seconds (or however you configure it). if you have a hundred people looking at one thread, livetopic will be refreshing more automatically than most of those people.

it can help or hurt, depending on how users use your forum :)

All the subsequent posts after the last post are no longer aligned properly, as you can see in the attachment.

This mod still works great, I love it!!

I have noticed that it doesn't support all styles/themes that are currently avialable for vBulletin. Try experimenting with themes if livetopic isn't working anymore. Trust me, the end result will be worth the hassles it takes to get it working.

I'm using-
VB version: 3.8.4
Theme: Blaze (with customized sidebar on all pages, as well as custom templates)
Browsers: Firefox & Chrome. (Haven't got around to testing it with IE..)

One of two things happened...

Either your host/server changed something
or
You added a mod or made a change that killed it, disable anything you've added lately.

(I say "you" assuming you are the only admin, if others can add/edit mods make sure no one else did anything first.)

Hi! I want to enable Live Topic to ALL the forum, ALL the time! Not just in a number of seconds, I want to display the posts in that manner always. Would it be very data base intense? Cause I don't want any crashes or anything, what do you think?

All the subsequent posts after the last post are no longer aligned properly, as you can see in the attachment.

It continues to show posts that are displayed via ajax aka the live topic mod until a page refresh is done

Bump anyone please?
It looks like you have some extra divs in there. Probably a customized template is causing the issue. Create a new style with no parent:

Styles & Templates > Style Manager > Add New Style
Parent Style: No Parent Style
Title: Default vBulletin
Allow User Selection: Yes
Save

Now post in a thread where live topic is active - do you still have the same problem?

Hey Lynne,

No it appears to be working perfect in default vBulletin aswell as one other custom template. So it must be a DIV thing could you point me to the template to look into finding this extra divs?

Thanks so much for the reply.

I made a post on vBulletin.com just then before reading your post so I will go delete that now

vBulletin.com won't help you with questions relating to mods, they'll refer you here.

The likely culprit is the postbit (or postbit_legacy) template, whichever your forum is setup to use.

Hmm I just went through and compared all the divs to the default template and they all appear in the identical place. Same number of divs in the same location all closed at the end correctly, any other ideas?

Nope. Like I said, you need to look at the page source and I would suggest using firebug to do so since it puts it in an easy to read format.

We have a version ready for release.. we simply need to create the download area and licensing..
sorry to have taken so long as this was not an easy project to decipher and update the security holes..

we will have 2 versions available.
One free version which will simply be an exact update to the current livetopic and a paid version which will have tons of added features

some of the added features will include:
- forum specific on/off for live topic
- user group permissions
- "paid" subscriptions (users pay to turn on)
- and many more!

Right now if your in the quick reply box on my site, www.yesfans.com and someposts your screen sorta blinks/flinches then you have to scroll up a hair to see the post. If you happen to be reading the post when a new one comes in it is fine. Anyway around that flinch of screen???

That is how often the page checks for new posts, by default it's 5000 milliseconds, or once every 5 seconds.

It would be this image!

It shows up right next to the thread title, before the other "Live Topic" icon when a thread is marked as "Live."

I couldn't fix this for IE9 so I did the next best thing, disabled it for IE9 users.

If anyone is interested go to your plugin manager, edit the plugin: [live topic] template edits

Erase it all and replace it with this code:

function ieversion()
{
$match = preg_match('/MSIE ([0-9]\.[0-9])/',$_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT'],$reg);
if ($match == 0)
return -1;
else
return floatval($reg[1]);
}

if (ieversion() < 9.0)
{
$is_livetopic = true;
$livetopichook = 'template_edits';
include 'includes/livetopic_hooks.php';
}

I'm using the IE Version Detector from this site. (http://www.krizka.net/2008/03/15/how-to-detect-internet-exporer-version-with-php/)

I only tested this on IE9 and Chrome, no promises, but I'm using it.

But there is a very high demand for a new version of Live Topic and therefore the discussion of alternatives will keep coming up in this thread, until there is a solution.

Is anyone taking this mod forward? for vb 4

I spent a good while today converting the source code of this mod into a vB4 native format, and it was coming out just nicely until I discovered that the javascript part also doesn't work. Tested on vB3.8.7 and it fails there as well. Sadly, I should have read a few pages back in this thread to find that out before going ahead and waste time.

If this was an easy convert to VB4 the people who bought it would have done it.

Too much Javascript running at the same time in the background of vbulletin is the problem. Read the developer's blog.

Hey guys anyone here know what could be causing it to stop showing new posts after updating 3 - 4 posts? The page needs to be refreshed after about 4 posts so it keeps updating really frustrating :(

EDIT Hmm it appears to be a Chrome issue! No problems with I.E 9

Try disabling all the mods temporarily and then test Live Topic via two different browsers and see how you go. I had the same issue like you and managed to find which Mod was causing the problem.

The author not willing to work out a coding issue of the mod is a problem, not Javascript or vB4. How do I know? I have created a 4.x version of this myself. It is actually easier to do this in vB4.

Just change all the plugins to have a condition for whether the user is a guest or not.

That's because you're using template code in a plugin (plugins are php code.)

It would be:

global $vbulletin;
if (is_member_of($vbulletin->userinfo, array(5,6,7))
{
$is_livetopic = true;
$livetopichook = 'ajax_start';
include 'includes/livetopic_hooks.php';
}

also you need to use $vbulletin->userinfo instead of $bbuserinfo in php/plugins.

Live topic stopped working for all users when I used that code.

I also tried using this, which I borrowed from a plugin for hiding links from guests but it didn't work either.

if ((!$this->registry->userinfo[userid]) OR (is_member_of($this->registry->userinfo, 5, 2, 6, 7)))
{
$is_livetopic = true;
$livetopichook = 'ajax_start';
include 'includes/livetopic_hooks.php';
}

I didn't check whether the code is good or not, just that what you wrote the first time was definitely invalid.

This is what I use personally to disable for users with IE 9... (on the global_start hook)

if (ieversion() < 9.0)
{
$is_livetopic = true;
$livetopichook = 'template_edits';
include 'includes/livetopic_hooks.php';
}

And it works for everyone else. If you want it only for mods and admins I would suggest:

global $vbulletin;
if (is_member_of($vbulletin->userinfo, 5, 6, 7))
{
$is_livetopic = true;
$livetopichook = 'template_edits';
include 'includes/livetopic_hooks.php';
}

(you don't need an array.)

If it still breaks for other users then I don't know, check and make sure no other code was changed.

Does it not work with IE9?

If so would you kindly show us how one would incorporate the IF IE9 and usergroup options into one.

I'd like to disable the mod for IE9 like you have BOP and also set it only for specific usergroups.

Thanks so much

BirdOPrey5
05-25-2012, 12:49 AM
For me it was not working for IE9, your mileage may vary.

To disable for IE9 just follow what I did in post #1220... Go to plugin manager, edit that plugin, and make the block of code look like what I posted.

If you want to disable on IE9 AND limit it to certain usergroups:

global $vbulletin
if (ieversion() < 9.0 AND is_member_of($vbulletin->userinfo, 5, 6, 7))
{
$is_livetopic = true;
$livetopichook = 'template_edits';
include 'includes/livetopic_hooks.php';
}

That will allow usergroups 5, 6, and 7 to use it and only if they are NOT using IE9.

beekay

This code was working well for me but Live Topic eventually stopped working for me until I reinstalled it. It seemed to work fine during lower activity levels but once I had more members online it stop working.

global $vbulletin
is_member_of($vbulletin->userinfo, 5, 6, 7))
{
$is_livetopic = true;
$livetopichook = 'template_edits';
include 'includes/livetopic_hooks.php';
}

Also is there a not_member_of alternative? I would like to give this another try to see if it stops working again.

Thanks again to BOP5!

BirdOPrey5

Actually that code is missing the if condition, it probably never worked right...

If you want to specify groups the member is NOT a member of, simply put an ! in front of "is_member_of"

example:

if(!is_member_of($vbulletin->userinfo, 1, 2))

That would be true for all members NOT in usergroups 1 or 2.

Wonksta
05-29-2012, 11:49 AM
Are you please able to amend the code above with the if condition fixed I am not sure where it goes in php :\

BirdOPrey5
05-29-2012, 01:11 PM
just this:

global $vbulletin
if (is_member_of($vbulletin->userinfo, 5, 6, 7))
{
$is_livetopic = true;
$livetopichook = 'template_edits';
include 'includes/livetopic_hooks.php';
}

work only for groups 5, 6, and 7

OR

global $vbulletin
if (!is_member_of($vbulletin->userinfo, 1, 2))
{
$is_livetopic = true;
$livetopichook = 'template_edits';
include 'includes/livetopic_hooks.php';
}

work for all groups EXCEPT 1 and 2.

if (is_member_of($vbulletin->userinfo, 5, 6, 7))

$livetopichook = 'template_edits';
include 'includes/livetopic_hooks.php';

I'm sorry but this code is just not working for me, I'm wondering if maybe theres a conflict somewhere else. I've tried both versions of the code and Live Topic stops working no matter what I do. I've tried adding it to both ajax_start and global_start. I've tried each plugin individually with the code as well as both of them having the code. :confused:

Do you have mods the amend postbit? Like adsense ad insertations? It will break if you do, happened for me.

In the mean time DragonByte has his version of thiis available that was less buggy

BirdOPrey5
05-30-2012, 09:24 AM
You do not add that code to any hook.

There is already a plugin on global start.

You need to edit the plugin so it looks like this (erase it all and paste this in)

function ieversion()
{
$match = preg_match('/MSIE ([0-9]\.[0-9])/',$_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT'],$reg);
if ($match == 0)
return -1;
else
return floatval($reg[1]);
}

if (ieversion() < 9.0)
{
$is_livetopic = true;
$livetopichook = 'template_edits';
include 'includes/livetopic_hooks.php';
}

Then change the line
if (ieversion() < 9.0)

to one of the conditions I posted above.

If that doesn't work then I'm sorry but this is a notoriously difficult mod to get working and why no one has produced a great working clone. A couple people have tried but they all seem to have their issues.

I just tried the one from dragon and it jumps around much more than this version. I have some very active threads during big sporting events and tonight it was almost impossible to read a reply without it jumping. If it remained static then I would prefer dragon because of the ability to disable it for usergroups and the claim that it uses less resources.
