Automatic Thread Tagger


Description
When a user submits a new thread this modification will automatically take keywords from the thread title and use these as tags. You can use Automatic Thread Tagger to propose the user AJAX tags for his new thread, or it assigns new tags after saving the new thread. It can add the translated thread prefix to the tags.
Additionally, you can tag existing threads via maintenance and also scheduled tasks.

This modification is a successor to the terminated Automatic Thread Tagger by MrEyes:

As an example, if a user submits a thread with a title of:
"Fish Food for Cats!"

The thread will be automatically tagged with:

- Fish
- Food
- Cats

If the user also submits an actual tag of "Fish" this will not be duplicated. Any rules you have setup for tagging will be respected.
If you choose to do so this product will also automatically tag threads created by incoming RSS feeds.

Automatic Tagging of existing threads
You can tag existing threads via maintenance or scheduled task/cron. They will be created with a special flag so they can be easily identified and deleted. Manual assigned tags are not touched. Maintenance is also working if Automatic Tagging is disabled via settings. Great if you want to test some settings. Automatic Tagging will take the date of the thread creation and also the userid of the creator. This process can be automated by running a scheduled job once a night.

Please keep in mind that tags that were proposed via AJAX are not tagged as auto tagged and therefore cannot be identified as such (and therefore not deleted automatically). If you want to retain the auto tagged flag you should disable AJAX and enable the tagging after the thread has been saved. As an alternative way you can also disable this and let new threads be tagged in the night from the scheduled job.


Installation / Upgrade
1. Upload all files from "upload" to your server, take care of the directory structure
2. Import "product-auto_thread_tagger110.xml" as a product, overwrite if it's already installed
3. Check settings
4. Run maintenance / Auto Tag Threads to tag existing threads (needed if you want to use the cron)

After install, and by default the modification is disabled, this will allow you to play around with configuration before switching it on.


Troubleshooting
If you report a bug please post the thread title that created it, without this I cannot test it and improve the language parsers.

* If no threads are tagged you will have to check the following:
- Is the modification enabled? Is the action you are testing enabled? (vBulletin tagging, whole auto thread tagger system, AJAX, new threads)
- Are the words you are using badwords or filtered out?

* Cron/Scheduled Task is not tagging all threads.
- The cron is limited to 500 (you can change this via settings) threads per run to avoid heavy impact on server. Make sure you run maintenance auto tagger before this to tag old threads. You can check the scheduled tasks log to see if it is running correctly.
Important: If a thread title does not meet minimum requirements to be included in tags (f.e. one word thread titles, too short words), it will be forever in this queue.

* I'm using polish, arabic, turkish, etc.. language and the tagger is not working like it should.
- If not already replaced, replace the filter replacement '&'=>'and' with ' & '=>'and' (a space before and after &)

Why thread title and not thread text?
Parsing the thread text for tags is an extremely unlikely addition as this would require some fairly heavy processing to ensure quality of tags.


What are Stopwords?
Stopwords is the name given to words which are filtered out prior to processing of tags.

Tags created by the mod you can delete via maintenance tools. Otherwise click in the tag cloud on a word, there you will the threads with that words. You will go into the thread and delete them.

The other way is to delete it via SQL query.

I've got the product installed and it seems to be working. Once I ran the cron job manually I'm showing tags on threads that didn't have anyone. However the options page isn't showing up. I've got the product listed, installed and working but I can't get to options... any suggestions?

It states in the vBoptions section when clicking "yes" for tagging of RSS feeds....

In order for RSS tagging to work you will have to manually edit one of the default vbulletin files. Please refer to the product page on vBulletin.org for further information.

I just installed this mod. However there seems to be a bug where no tags are showing in you have vBadvanced installed. On the vba homepage we have a module for popular tags. The auto tags generated by this mod do not show in the vba module.

How can this be fixed please?

I have a very big problem with this mod :(
After installing this mod, i have many white page when editing a discussion, or merging 2 discussions, or when i need to actualise the discussions via admin pannel...

Moreover, how can we do to delete all autotags ? I can't find this very useful option...

You specified a tag that was too long. A tag can only be 25 characters.

1. You will notice in the "upload to ftp" folder in your download there is one autotagger_ajax.php that you would install to your forumhome. Inside that there is an "Includes" file and a .php. You would open your includes file on your server, open that file on your computer and transfer the one .php file into that. You will notice inside there, there is a "cron" folder. You would again open your "cron" folder on your server and the one on your computer and transfer the one .php file in there.

2. If you have never installed it before "allow rewrite" would be unnecessary. If you have and were upgrading you would need to select "allow rewrite" when you upload. If you forgot the first time, you would need to do it again. You install by going to products manager and click "upload/install new product" then clicking the "browse" button, installing the product onto your version of vBulletin.

I hope this helps you. (I haven't installed it yet, it was unpopular because of the "too many tags" that users kept getting. I realize now it was because I had limited them to 5. Is there a setting where it will only select the first "x" number of tags?)

GO to ACP -> Maintenance -> Update Counters - Then go to "Delete Auto Tags" and run it.

1. You will notice in the "upload to ftp" folder in your download there is one autotagger_ajax.php that you would install to your forumhome. Inside that there is an "Includes" file and a .php. You would open your includes file on your server, open that file on your computer and transfer the one .php file into that. You will notice inside there, there is a "cron" folder. You would again open your "cron" folder on your server and the one on your computer and transfer the one .php file in there.

2. If you have never installed it before "allow rewrite" would be unnecessary. If you have and were upgrading you would need to select "allow rewrite" when you upload. If you forgot the first time, you would need to do it again. You install by going to products manager and click "upload/install new product" then clicking the "browse" button, installing the product onto your version of vBulletin.

I hope this helps you. (I haven't installed it yet, it was unpopular because of the "too many tags" that users kept getting. I realize now it was because I had limited them to 5. Is there a setting where it will only select the first "x" number of tags?)

I would like this so much better if it tagged the original posts' content rather than just the thread title. There's rarely anything useful in a title to tag. Most of the keyword relevancy is found in the post.

But the whole point of tagging is to enable people to find things in the future that a key word search won't. IOW, if the tag appears as a word in the post, it will hit in a regular search. So it's redundant to copy post words to tags. Not to mention you'd have dozens of tags per post.

e.g. A post about engines in Chevys. Only when someone adds the tag "Chevrolet" or "455cc" will the tag search become more useful than the standard keyword search. This mod won't do that, but without it nobody bothers adding tags.

I had an issue if I want to disable a tag ... an error occurs saying that the tag I am trying to add is not allowed.

For example say all of my posts have "foo" in the title ... so I dont want foo to be a tag because all of the posts will have foo and every other tag will be minimalized because of numbers of tagged posts ...

foo - 20000 posts
relevant - 5 posts
another - 3 posts

etc ... so foo would be big and really any other tag will be small.

In any case if I add foo as a disabled tag ... anybody trying to use the word foo in the title will get an error that really is not clear.

Can you do a check for words in the title vs banned keywords first before creating the tags from the title?

I have this set, but I keep getting tags added to threads after someone makes a reply post automatically.

Here a neat idea:

How about allowing a configuration to define a specific pattern for the tags, and define a start and/or end string that would take the middle text as the actual tag.

Options:

- Tag all before <string> -- eg: ","

- Tag all after <string> -- eg. "by"

- Tag all between <string1> <string2> -- eg: "[" and "]"

So that using the above examples, a thread title such as "Book Title, by Author Name [Category]" you could theoretically have "Book Title", "Author Name", and "Category" as 3 separate tags instead of Author, Book, Category, Name, and Title.

I think this would be a powerful addition to an already terrific mod.

Would you consider changing the Auto-Tagging preferences so that the Auto-Tagger defaults to not auto-tagging every forum?

We have a lot of forums on our board and would rather focus auto-tagging on a couple of key forums that are directly related to the forum, rather than including all the other incidental chat / support forums.

I've hacked my copy of your code to change the excluded_forums to be interpreted as included_forums; forums are not auto-tagged by default, you have to list them in "excluded forums" to have the auto-tagger active in them.

In functions_autotagger.php, edit line 163 to read

if (in_array($thread['forumid'], $excludedForums) && !in_array($thread['postuserid'], $excludedUsers))i.e. remove the ! from if (!in_array

Is it possible for this plugin to only add tags if they are already on my tag list? I see there is an option to remove custom tags, but I don't want them added in the first place. There are specific tags I would like to use and having hundreds of tags to sift through makes this system difficult to maintain. I want my tag system to archive threads with specific topics I select rather than something comprehensive that ensures there is a tag on every thread ever made on the forum.

I just tested thread merging on my forum and I'm not having any problems with it. I'm using version 3.8.2. Sorry this doesn't answer your question, but I wanted to inform others that this problem isn't necessarily universal with this plugin in case they were hesitant to try the plugin over this. Hopefully someone else with more knowledge than me can provide a solution for you.

There seems to be something not quite right with the exclude usernames option. I have it set to yes, but I still see a lot of usernames being auto-tagged.

In addition, if the tag list gets too long the thread crashes, especially when attempting moderator actions. The cause appears to be a timeout in the autotagger (> 30 secs response time).

I am looking into both issues to see what I can find and how much if any might be the fault of my site, but just thought I would mention them here, as I have only recently run into a thread big enough to cause these problems.

I believe what happened was a lot of small threads got merged, and each small thread brought with it tags, and the posts all have titles (converted from the original thread title).

I wonder if you used the 're:' option for posts it would cause a similar issue.

Anyway, more as I learn more.

I tried lowering the thread count and it made no difference. I also increased the memory allocation for PHP and MySQL to 128MB and it still failed.

No errors! This mod 100% blocks the "check for similar threads" mod from working. When you uninstall this mod it works fine. Just deactivating isn't good enough.

Until the ajax conflict issue can get resolved this mod has to stay uninstalled. The other mod will simple say there are no similar threads found and is prevented from working while this auto tag mod is installed.

I have been researching this for a while now but "ajax" is not a strong area for me. The problem is with ajax. A number of new ajax based mods are having the same problem: one mod making the other useless.

Only real way that this issue will get corrected is if the developer of this mod gets with the check for similar threads mod and they work together.

When merging you merge the tags from the two threads and then hitting the tag limit. Set the tag limit higher(or turn it off) and it should work perfectly

I had the same problem, but have solved it having changed some functions in all files. Fnd convert all files in utf encodes.
I have replaced all functions strlen($var) => mb_strlen($var, "UTF-8") and strtolower($var, "UTF-8") => mb_strtolower($var, "UTF-8")

Uninstalled, although this is a very good MOD, but it causing "flood" when posting new THREAD !

Running maintenance such as "rebuild thread information"" is impossible and getting "flood" too.

I really love this addon but I had to deactivate it because of this bug.

I have a problem with merging threads on my forum. Causes a problem plugin "Automatic Thread Tagger". When I disable plugin merging works properly but when plugin is enabled during merging some threads browser works all time I still read merging threads page.
If I don't wait and go to any forum and check moderator menu that I have "x threads checked" but thread is merged.
This plugin cause another problem during rebuilding threads structure. If plugin is enabled that rebuild stops few time. If I disable plugin and turn on rebuilding process ends properly without stops.

If this information is important I wnote that forum is after downgrade from vb4 to vb3.
Anybody know how fix problem? This plugin is good and I would like use it still on my forum.

Disable the ajax part of it, i've had similar problems with mods like this that use ajax, i believe it's in the settings for this one.

I just noticed this recently. Maybe this has been going on a while, or maybe this has to do with that my server was just updated to PhP 5.4 , although I have not noticed any other issues.

When I go to Edit a post, then click on Save, nothing happens - just the spinning circle. The Edit is never saved.

So, I have to click "Go Advanced" and then click "Save Changes," and the Edit IS saved, but not before the following errors are flashed on the screen:

although, yes, after the errors are flashed the edit is saved.

When I disable the Auto Thread Tagger all edits work as normal with no errors.

i think you need php5.4 to run 388 but you CAN still run 387 on php5.4 although, having issues with addons is more of that said addon having the php issue, and most of the time its an easy fix.

@mdawd - I tried to get this error although I couldn't replicate it, and those lines... nothings poping out at me as anything that would be an issue =/

it may not support it but it does work just fine (vanilla/no addons) on it... j/s.

but products that offer php files with them some are going to give you errors, cause said php file isn't upgraded for php5.4

so mdawg.... try updating to vB 3.8.8, although i still bet you have the same issue cause your vb isnt causing the problem its the product. although i have php5.4 and have tested this mod on both 387 & 388 and was unable to duplicate this error

as for your issue with the other product... since your error was only that line, really all i would do is remove that line and try it again lol. but we can discuss that in that thread if you want to go that way instead.

The big issue with updating to 3.8.8. is they want you to buy a vb 5 license just to get 3.8.8 unless I sneak download it and install it.

Depending on your hosting environment you might still be able to run PHP v5.3. Talk to your host. Although, there are several threads here on vBulletin.org discussing running v3.8.7 on PHP v5.4.

It has always been the product that was incompatible with php 5.4. It was never a vBulletin problem. I do not remember anyone stating that it was. :)

Since this is not reusable code, there is not much for anyone to do here. A kind request has to be made to the author of the code for updating.

Okay I edited the code in line 15, functions_autotagger.php:

Success! seems to work okay now.

(I even toggled the file back and forth with the original code to make sure this was the issue - it was!) Able to edit properly now in both quick edit form (so more forever spinning circle on the Save) and advance edit, with no errors.
