for the number 1 part vbseo, i dont use the htaccess file at all. Something in that file was causing my robots.txt file with errors when googles was crawling my page so i got rid of it and used a standard robots.txt

If you don't already have an .htaccess then yes.
You can edit it by opening the file in notepad/wordpad
