My wife runs a small forum. Our hosting company, which is about to change, told me I have an extreme about of tables in phpMyAdmin, 258. Is this about normal? Is there a way to find and delete unnecessary tables?

Standard vB 3.7.2 has 146 tables.
Any more are not default tables.

Thank you for the reply. The others I take it are from modifications? When you delete a mod, does it automatically delete the table? And if not, will leaving it there cause the forum as a whole to run slow? Sorry for all the questions.

It depends on the modification. Most should remove it, however you may find some experience and error or something and so do not remove the tables. Also be aware any other scripts you have on that site may also have their own tables.

I'm not 100% sure about this but I don't think have loads of tables will have a significant effect, I may be wrong though.

Thank you so much for the info! My soon to be ex hosting company (HostMonster) was tryig to tell me that the average forum only has about 50 tables making my wife's forum extremely large and with all those tables is causing it to run slow.

I would definitely move away from that host - a host shouldn't care about how many tables you have.
Actually - having less tables could affect performance, instead of increasing. Also referred to as the "spreadsheet syndrome".
