G'day Bob - OK so I guess I insert the below into the template. But being as how I'm a bit on the dumb side, where exactly in the template would it go?

I have tried it in several places to no avail.

I think its that darn clear br tag in the template that doing it with some stylesI don't have the clear br tag in my templates only in the above.

I am using 1,01 not ajax does this make a difference?

Are you sure you are using 1.01? It may make a difference, but I am not actually familiar with 1.01!

Yes King - definitely 1.01 in vB 3.6.8, 3.7.2 going on tonight I hope - 1.5 hadn't been made when I put the tabs on. It works brilliantly in every browser I can get my hands on, but on IE it's woeful and I now understand why so many of my members have said they don't like it.

I never use IE so I had no idea how bad it looked until I had to use ie on someone else's computer. Imagine my shock. I use several browsers to check all my site design for compatibility, but rather then ie I use Opera in ie emulation mode. It works fine with that. From now on I'll use ie to check the look of pages. Lesson learned.

Just as an aside. one thing I have noticed since putting on the tabs is that my Google clicks dropped almost overnight to be the lowest they've been in the 6 years I've had them on, I have managed to claw back up to 25% of what they were before over the last few weeks from a low of almost 10%. I am prepared to tough it out till I can find an answer to the problem as I really don't want to lose the tabbed pages.

My only way around it seems to be to go back to the big untabbed page I used to have (around 100+ forums) and make it the deault for guests.

Has anyone else found the same problem? If so have you found a fix for it?

I guess for most forums the revenue from Google ads is quite small, I don't want to get into earnings in an open forum, all I will say in public is, my Google revenue was extremely substantial and to have it drop by around 90% is a very, very big problem.

I believe Bobster posted an XML to fix that. It shouldn't effect the PM popup. I will do some testing with Bob and see if the problem occurs in the newest version.

Make sure the paths to the .css and .js files are correct inside of the template. Also, attempt adding the entire URL into the path.

Check the contents in the attached image...there are no xml files at all....I downloaded it just now once again.:confused:

Hmmmm - This is interesting - waiting to see if anyone else has noticed such a trend with adsense. I'd generally say that most clicks come from unregistereds having found your forum via search engine, as opposed to Members or unregistereds browsing via the main forum index... Makes me say hmmmm anyway...

OH! One thing... I noticed too that my adsense clicks had been down for the week - Waaaaay down actually, now that you mention it. I'd checked earlier for the 7-day total and it was 50% what it usually is. THAT makes me say hmmmmmm. I wonder if others have noticed anything? Apparently Google is retiring Referals in August... I don't run any referals though... Weird - the thing is - I'd only installed Tabbed Forum Home this evening...

So for the moment = INSTALLED!
Thanx for a wonderful modification - gives the board a very clean and uncluttered appearance :) But what the hell is up with google?!?!?!? :down:

I assume you have your google code in your footer template correct? I know that this doesn't effect it directly, however, when you click on a tab, its not refreshing the footer, so each tab click won't get you a google click. You could try and also imbed the google code into each tab, so everytime a tab gets clicked, it counts.

There is no way that this would cause a 90% reduction.. I could see a slight reduction based on the fact that instead of a user refreshing the forum home page to see if something new was posted, they now would click a tab which only refreshes the info within the tab container (not hitting the google code in the footer) .. this slight reduction can be resolved by adding the google code to the FORUMHOMETAB template (as well as keeping it in the footer)

you'll need to edit the CSS file and change the color settings to match your style. Its pretty simple :D

I've corrected the plugin because in the version I've installed I used tabforumhome.php. Now I have another problem, in the "Tabbed Forum Home WOL Unknown" plugin this variable is empty {$vbulletin->session->vars['sessionurl_q']}

I spent about an hour and a half yesterday (or the day before...) trying to fix this. It is driving me insane that I can't figure out WHY it isn't working...

both versions use CSS to control the style. You can use other CSS from Dynamic Drive's CSS Library (with a little bit of formatting).

Haven't tried it, but simple copy the "tab" portion and place it after the last content area and before the switch tabs script .. in theory, that should work. one of the CSS style is use has tabs at the bottom, so I know it works, just never tried it with both top and bottom ..

Hey Bud, to be honest, I have not had time to test this out, but will be adding this as a future item in Project Tools so that its tracked ... probably won't be looked into tho until beta 2.0 is released tho. Also, 2.0 is based off of YUI, so tab controls are a lot different.

I just replied ... sounds to me like you have the entire FORUMHOME Template within new FORUMHOMETAB template instead of just the MAIN portion of FORUMHOME Template (re read step 2b and step 3 :)

I can't seem to get the tabs to contain any content, not 100% sure where I'm going wrong.

I believe the following code is what I need to edit to list the categories, however I'm not sure how to go about that exactly. I'm not sure how to find the forum category numbers, at first I thought it was the forumdisplay number but I've realised that it's not.

You need to put the CATEGORY ID. Categories contain forums, forums contain sub forums. If you put in a FORUM ID that contains no Sub Forums, then there won't be anything to display. So you need to put the Forums PARENT ID (which is known as a Category ID) and it will display all the forums for that specific category.

You can use a different CSS and lay the DIV's out any way you want to.. just take a look at the code for the NON AJAX version and use the CSS from that (to include the DIV layout) .. (hope I explained that clear enough... its pretty easy actually).. also, there are a couple other CSS files/examples with my AJAX Tabs mod for vBa CMPS as well that work with this.

Check the paths to your .css and .js files .. the result your are getting is because it can not find those files.. you might try and use the full URL to them..

There are multiple things you will have to change.. just look at all files/templates associated with TFH and change every instance of tabforumhome.php to tab.php ...

You can use a different CSS and lay the DIV's out any way you want to.. just take a look at the code for the NON AJAX version and use the CSS from that (to include the DIV layout) .. (hope I explained that clear enough... its pretty easy actually).. also, there are a couple other CSS files/examples with my AJAX Tabs mod for vBa CMPS as well that work with this.

That is not my site. I'd have to ask permission from the owner as I did that as a paid request.

As far as the "jumping" thats because you are not finished with the template. You have to have the same amount of content areas as you have tabs. Finish creating the template and you won't have that problem.

The New Forum image should work just fine.. there is an issue that we are aware of, but its the forum marking...

Off the top, I am not aware of an easy way to do that. We're working on a total different process with version 2, so I've not spent much time even re-working ver 1.5 Feel free to mess around with it... you could try something like only assigning a single var to each tab url .. ie ?t=1, ?t=2 etc .... and then in the php file, do case statements to assign the Cat IDs .. in theory, that will work just fine..

at the top of the FORUMHOME template, there are two paths to the CSS and JS files.. remove the first / from the paths on both of them.. (or put the full URL to the files).. the answer was just a few posts up...

re read step 2a ... if you would have followed the instructions and inserted the code as specified, you wouldn't be having a problem. The remarks are missing and so is the link to the CSS file which is exactly why the Tabs are not being displayed properly (since the CSS is what builds them) ...

If you changed a Category into a Forum and are still using the ForumID as a Cat ID, its only going to display that forums sub forums...

As I explained before... if Forum ID 48 is a FORUM (not a catagory), then it is only going to display that forums "Sub Forums" .. if you want the Entire Forum to show up under a Tab, you will need to list that Forums PARENT ID (which you just said that FORUM 48's parent ID is Cat 3..

yea, I am seeing the same here For instance;

Basic Help Collection(BHC) - Top level category
----> Linux Basics - sub forum
----> Windows Basics - subforum

They show fine in the tab for BHC.

I have the code for all my other categories working great, but when I tried to do these two subs to bring them forward in the tab bar, I get blanki :D

It's the same code block from the prev tab in my forumhome, all I changed was the forumid and var name doubles for the collapse, and the $forumbits variable name increment-I followed your instructions on naming convention.

I'm pretty sure it's correct.. I have beeen sitting here comparing the two code blocks over and over, trying to see where I coded incorrectly - No joy..

So any help will be appreciated.

I am using 3.7.2 and vBadvanced with many different categories and this has made it easy for users to just use the category or categories that they want to view whilst keeping the overall look, feel and structure of my site - thank YOU!

Can I just make one small suggestion for the next update - it would finish it off if when a user was using the advance search that the forum search list only displayed the forums that are within that category or that the other categories are condensed to line items and only the category that the user is in has the forums in an expanded view - just a suggestion.

I have a small issue. I unactivated a forum to hide it from the main forums. The only problem is when I go view that forum in a tab, it shows I can access it, but all the forums say they have never been posted in. If I click one of the forums I can clearly see that they have indeed been posted in.

It seems the mod is not allowing my forums to shrink in width depending on what screen resolution the user has i.e. if a user has 1024x768 then the forums go off the right edge causing the horizontal slider appearing for the user to be able to see the right side of the page.

The line that is causing it is:

Plus, whenever i click on one of the tabs, it does not use the same style as the forum, it just uses a blank style with the forum title, descriptions...etc there. I have sent you the forum link through PM as i would like it to remain private for the time being.

Fully unobtrusive, search engine friendly design. For search engines or browsers with JavaScript disabled, the external contents will just load as actual pages (instead of via Ajax).

No further development is being done on version 1.5 .. version 2.0 is a total re-write and is driven off of YUI Tab View. The 2 systems are going to be totally different (thats why its taking us so long).. I'll add this as a request for version 2. Hiding the forum from public view goes for the tabs too. Having them private in the settings makes them private in the tabs. We use vBulletin code to build the forums and if it is private it is private. Make it publicly viewable and it will show up.

You don't HAVE to use the $forumbits variable in the first tab.. create a specific variable for the first tab, just like you do for all the rest fo the tabs.. That's only in the EXAMPLE for those that want to have all the forums within a single tab...

What are your subforums currently set at? (to display) maybe you need to increase that number by one.. ie, if its set to 0, set to 1

2. Having tried both now I feel the Ajax version is slower then the non-ajax version

As for number three of not liking the AJAX version, the new version removes this little 'feature' and it now an invisible action and looks like it is just updating data (but in reality is reloading the page). :)

As for the comments:
1. I don't understand.
2. v2 will fix the need for editing your template as I have coded the entire ACP back end.
3. I will look into this.

Oh well, if we are asking for things perhaps it would be good, and make it more of a professional integration, if the search, advance search, new posts etc only displayed items that were specific to the tab that you are on.

This really isn't necessary? Considering advanced search lists all forums and you can select any that you want to search in.

One thing that is strange on my install is some white padding between forums now. It only appears when I select the 'tabbed' style. The parent style does not have that problem.

You can take a look at dynamic drive and see if the remote links work differently within the AJAX Version of the .js file. I did see in their forums that someone from here posted about this issue and there was some sorta solution that seemed to work for them.. I don't have it bookmarked, just do a search on Tabs and Remote Links and you should be able to find it. Sorry that I can't be more help right now... Im not pursuing using the DD .js file anymore as we shifted all development to YUI Tabview. (and just so you know, so far remote links work like a charm with the YUI Tabview).

Hey Bob, great mod. I'm having some troubles setting up remote links as well. Looked at the DD thread (http://www.dynamicdrive.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31570).


If you are doing that, then you will need to find a way to be able to get that data (the get variable for forumtabs) and pass that along to the expandit function in the script. Normally it would be something like this:

ajaxtabs_instance.expandit(<?php echo $_GET['forumtabs'];?>);

Although, being that this is vb and you are not able to parse php in your templates, I'm at a loss.

Ok, I can define something like $tabid in vb's core php file which is bbs.php and have that passed to template forumhome, so I could put something like

ajaxtabs_instance.expandit($tabid);in my forumhome template

That shouldn't be hard.

Its actually very easy to pull off by using some code from version 1 (to do the forums before the tabs).. I don't have time to explain it right now as we've been evaced from our property do to forest fires, so I have limited internet access at the moment. Just hang on for a few days and I will show you how simple it is to do..

Let me explain why I am saying changing it doesn't seem easily achieved. Unless I am reading your reply wrong, you have say 3 tabs (made up):
Tab One: Forum IDs: 2, 5, 8
Tab Two: Forum IDs: 1, 4, 7
Tab Three: Forum IDs: 3, 6

Now, as I understand it, if you are viewing tab one you would like the quick search to only search Forum IDs 2, 5, and 8. But viewing tab two, you want it to search 1, 4, and 7. The problem is not learning how to specify the tab URLs, it is learning how to dynamically change the values as you switch tabs unless we redesigned how TFH looked by removing the navbar and forcing it into the tab view so it could be different per tab.

Also, I am not sure if we can limit new posts and the other suggested items based on forum ids.

Yes, this works with 3.7.x and according to the website where the engine was found, it says it is search engine friendly.

Can someone offer css advice?

I am trying to get the tabs to spread right across 100% of my forums with each tab being the same width.

Plus if the text in one or more of the tabs is wrapped into say 2 lines then all the tabs become the same height as well regardless if they only contain a single word.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

edit: I tried the 1.01 version, and got it to work to an extent. Tab 1 never aligns with tabs 2 or 3. It's one pixel lower than the others because it overlaps the outer boarder of the forums display, where the others do not.

I might consider helping to rewrite the instructions. While I was able to follow them along myself, they are written extremely poorly and contain a lot of extra work that is unneeded and also don't explain many parts properly.

This only happens when you have the same forum in more than one tab (which by using the default vB functions, the collapseIDs are always assigned by using the forumID).. This is what is causing the conflict and is being re-written in version 2.0 to prevent that.

Did you try and uncollapse them from the first tab that they are displayed in? I just tried that and it worked.

If you want to strip out the Collapse Functionality, just remove the code (in RED ) in the Below Template..

I must be blind, but I can't swee in the template on where to fix this: Under each tab it has the line that says "Forum, Last post, # of threads, etc" above the actual forum name. So basically the thwo are switched compared to how they normally are, but for some reason I can't spot the code to switch them. Any help here?

When you upgraded, you probably installed the new index.php file, so you would have to edit that and insert those $formbits that you created.

the CSS file drives most of it, the rest is done via inline css on the template itself. Looking at your "Style" there might be a couple different CSS options for you to look at. If you check out dynamic drive, they have some alternate CSS options for Tabs that might work better for your style :)

This is not totally true. Cyb's Subforum Hack was the first thing I played with will making TFH, as I have it installed on my Forums. It works just fine. You may have issues with a custom style. This is geared of default vB. If I had any free time, I would take a look at your site, but to say it doesn't work with it is not entirely true. There are actually some enhancements in version 2.0 for Cybs subforums as well as Forums in Columns..

Colors/Images etc are all handled via CSS (either in the CSS file itself, or inline CSS within the template. Version 2.0 is going to change this as we are using YUI and a Custom CSS via the ACP.

As far as the AJAX being slower.. just depends on what you want... the AJAX Version retrieves the most current (real time info) each time the Tab is selected. The first version loads all data into each tab upon creation of the page, so when you go from tab to tab, all you are getting is the info at the time of the page creation.... so it may seem "slower" but its retrieving real time info. NOW, with that said, the YUI AJAX Tabs are MUCH faster, that is one of the many reasons we are switching to YUI... NIGHT and DAY difference.

This is geared of default vB. If I had any free time, I would take a look at your site, but to say it doesn't work with it is not entirely true. There are actually some enhancements in version 2.0 for Cybs subforums as well as Forums in Columns..

because it will line up all sub forum in one row and it makes the forum go alot wider

and any idea how to make space btw each forum category?

also about the tabs, how do i replace the colors with gif images instead

I took the site down and tried again. There is a cat 4 and setup the line in home as such

On another matter, I have installed a few mods and 3rd party apps recently and I just noticed that I don't get the (x viewing) text next to forums any more so I was just wondering whether this mod was the cause of it or not - could be wrong - do others who installed this mod get the # viewing anymore?

Cool Beans on the xml ... was a simple issue of looking for the wrong file name (had the version 2.0 filename instead of the 1.5) :o

The x view is indeed a "bug" and has been logged in Project Tools as a bug.

unfortunately, with this initial version, parts of it, yes.. you can make it easy on yourself and save the templates and then wen you revert, you can just cut and past the changes back in. If you use the NON AJAX Version, you will have to do the same with the index.php file.

We are going to try our hardest to make the next version a product that won't be effected by upgrades..



try using -1 as the Cat ID .. that should create the full list of Cats/Forums ..

That is exactly what I was planning to ask :)
I saw the reply a few pages back about the untouched crawlability.
But what do we do about the users with no javascript? I looked on both demo sites with javascript disabled and I got no content whatsoever.
Why don't you display a normal forumhome page in case no js is detected?

I've answered this before.... what I do is create a child style for the Tabbed Layout so that users can choose whether they want the Tabbed layout or normal default vB layout.

One of the items that we are looking into also is auto detection of JS disabled.

This would be directly related to the css file and the tabs finding it. It should be listed at the top of the forumhome template and looks something like:
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="clientscript/tabs/ajaxtabs.css" />

Just in my opinion I would start looking from there also it may (just guessing) have something to do with cache but then I am only a back yarder in coding but it may help to get you started till the big boys offer something

Yea, seems to have been a cache or propagation thing. I am seeing the tabs now.
