Where can I find a Popular Text Editor

I'd like to find a text editor, at the moment I keep using notepad on Windows but i'd like a more developed text editor which is free.

I've found one called 'Crimson Editor' but I was just wondering what other editors there are for free on the net and which one is the most popular.

I've been looking on Google but I seem to get loads which have a trail period which isn't what I’m looking for.

There is Notepad++ and is available also in portable format try it
