Searching for vB hacking support and documentation

I am interested in starting to build custom hacks for our forum. The problem is that I have no usable experience with vB's backend code structure at this time.

I'm looking for documentation support in learing more about how the "hook"s work and how to use data managers. The online vB docs don't go into enough detail. Any resource suggestions are welcomed!
