I use FlashFXP (http://www.inicom.net/pages/en.ffxp-home.php), it's pretty amazing.

WinSCP isn't really needed unless you need Secure FTP. I find it slow as well. I personally recommend SmartFTP.

You always need secure file transfers (either sftp or scp). Normal FTP should only be used for public sites.

FlashFXP is what i used to use but it doesnt support sftp as its a different protocol. So i just use filezilla and i think filezilla is great. Not the best and i think flashfxp is better but i need something that supports sftp.

SFTP, or secure FTP, is a program that uses SSH to transfer files. Unlike standard FTP, it encrypts both commands and data, preventing passwords and sensitive information from being transmitted in the clear over the network. It is functionally similar to FTP, but because it uses a different protocol, you can't use a standard FTP client to talk to an SFTP server, nor can you connect to an FTP server with a client that supports only SFTP.
Explains it all :).
