View Full Version : Moderators Functions - Force Users to Read a Thread
vB 3.7 version of this hack here: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=172155
Force Users to Read a Thread 2.0
About this hack:
This hack allows you to set a thread as 'must read' by your members. Right now, if you make a post and want all your members to read it, you have no way of enforcing it. This hack will give an error message similar to the one you get when you need to change you password, saying that the admins want you to read a certain thread before they continue using the forum.
Once a user reads a thread, they wont be bugged to read it again.
You can set all usergroups or just certain onces that must read a thread.
You can set to site wide or just some forums.
Option to Force Guests
This hack added one query to every page on your forum a member goes to.

does this work for everyone else?
Works on my forum. You set the settings on a thread but it didn;t ask all users to read it? Go check the settings again. I would need 2 user accounts on your forum to test it out. One of couse an admin one. If you still have trouble, send me a PM.

will this come everytime the users log in or jus` for one time......
I mean if the user has not read the rules and regulations of the forum(watever they might be) he is directed to that forum thread and when he reads the whole Rules and Thread thing and check the box below then only he/she gets access to the site........

This will only tell a user once to read the thread. Once they read it, it wont bother them again. Also, they can't do ANYTHING on your forum unless they go and read the thread.

or if one goes other will have to take it`s place ???
yes i did, the option is there also but it just doesnt come up.

If you go back to the thread, click to manage it, and remove all checkboxes, then save, no-one must see this thread again.
If you have more then one set, a user get info to read one, after he reads this one, he will get info to read the next one.

Plans for in a future release. I just wanted to get this out there already so I didn't make it's own permissions. It uses the permission of someone who can manage the thread.

Sorry if i`m sounding like a no0b but could you please explain what u said in another words cause i am not able to understand wat u jus` saidSimple, Abe says that if you no longer require users to read a thread you simply go back to the thread, use the tools drop down and remove all the check boxes from the usergroups you specified when first requiring users to read that thread. In other words, just the opposite of what you did when setting up that thread to require users to read it. :)

NOTE TO ALL USERS WHO vB version < 3.6.6
This hack uses a hook that was not put into vB until version 3.6.6. You can follow the following steps to get this hack working on your forum.
Open file global.php
Find:
if (!empty($db->explain))
Place BEFORE:
($hook = vBulletinHook::fetch_hook('global_setup_complete') ) ? eval($hook) : false;
Save file.
Open file includes/xml/hooks_vbulletin.xml
Find:
<hook>global_start</hook>
Place BEFORE:
<hook>global_setup_complete</hook>
Save file.
Re-install the xml product file for this hack.

Thanks for this hack! It was exactly what I was looking for. Now, I have a question. Can this be made so that it will also FORCE a user to REPLY to the thread? In other words, if they don't reply, then it will keep forcing them back to the thread until they reply.
If you can get it to do this, then it will be perfect!

Can this be done via Hooks? It' s sometimes hard to keep all changes in mind by doing new upgrades. What do you think, Abe1? -Mike
you dont have to keep info on this. This is in by default in vb 3.6.6 and greater.

I believe that's been answered as no.
But there could possibly be a work-around using php conditional:
<if condition="in_array($bbuserinfo[usergroupid], array(6))">
<!-- Start Abe1 Force Users to Read a Thread -->
<div><label for="ao_mfr"><input type="radio" name="do" id="ao_mfr" value="forceread" />$vbphrase[manage_force_thread_reading]</label></div>
<!-- End Abe1 Force Users to Read a Thread -->
</if>
This way the link is ONLY shown to Administrators group ;)

In the previous version, no problem at all.
Then, "invalid input specified" was appear if i try to go to manage force redirects.
I realize that Andreas's "bump/make older a thread (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=97165)" hack was not working too.
If i disable your modification, then "bump/make older thread (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=97165)" works again.
That behavior do not happen with your previous version of this mod.
(By the way, why you don't use the same techniche to do an on-the-fly edit for the template to add the new option, just like Andreas's hack?)

It would be useful if an admin could specify when this mod kicks in on their forum... say after three days or a week.
When a user signs up he has a lot thrown at him... he signs up, gets the activation email, he activates and then maybe gets a welcome email and / or PM. Usuall the new user is eager to go exploring the site and he may just 'click through' the 'forced thread' or if he does read it may not properly read /absorb what the thread is telling him. He's more likely to read and absorb the message if if was thrown at him at least a day or two after he's confirmed his account.

I decided to delete the message before all the users viewed it. now they come to the screen "the administrators want you to view a thread before you continue to browse the forum. you can view the thread here". they click it and nothing happens and they cant proceed. i then disable the plugin, when they click the link then they get "no thread specified, please notify the administrator". then they can proceed to the forums. once i reenable the plugin though they get sent back to "the administrators want you to view a threadbefore you continue to browse the forum. you can view the thread here". can i just uninstall and then try again?

Enjoy!

I seem to be having an issue with this now since the upgrade. When we select a thread to force users to read, and when the member clicks the thread they are being required to read, it doesn't take them to the thread. Instead it just stays on the message telling them there is a message for them to read.
I'm not sure if this issue is due to the recent upgrade or because I had 2 threads selected for members to read.

Nice trick to force new members to read rules, I need to test this soon.
Cool hack but can "This hack added one query to every page on your forum a member goes to." this one query be eliminated with a code change somehow?
If I had an easy way, I would have done it. It is not a big query and runs fast. All parts of it are indexed.

No clue. It should not affect the other. If you read one, then the other should not bother him until he has read the first one.

Suggestion:
I have the welcome thread mod installed that creates a new welcome thread when a new user registers... it would be interresting to have that new user to be unable to view anything else until they few the welcome thread created for them.

You want this hack to go down to the user option on who has to view a thread.
You are better off with a new hack made just for it. I do create custom hacks for users for a price. I have an idea on where to start.

You have to elaborate what does not work. The whole hack? The force reading? Just be more clear.
If I think you mean the force reading part, vbadvanced does not use global.php unfortunately.

Hi Abe,
After installing your hack when going to thread tools and move a thread to the recycle bin forum it says that thread has no forum selected in the recycle bin options but there is.
Once I uninstall your hack it works fine :(

But I have a suggestion..
when we add many threads (up to 5, 10 or more) users may not understand what happens to forum, why are they getting same error again and again..
Can you add some details on error page to show All Forced Threads List with their Titles n Links to visit forced threads?

Great Hack Abe1!!
It'd be Great that in Future Versions of it you could include a List of the Forums that are being Forced to Read by Users!! ;)
It'd be Great too to Manage a Cookie Based Control for Guests for them to be forced to Read the Threads Too?? (In this Version Guests are not Being forced to Read a Thread). (Sometimes is Very Important to Show Guests the Rules of the Forums, and the Guides to Navigate in Them and Use Them, and Forcing them to Read a Thread or Threads could be a Great Idea) ;)

Dont think I'll do it right now. Try my edit new thread button if you want them to use the form to create a new thread.
How would that help? Every time they went to create a new thread, it would take them to the form? That's overkill and would prevent users from creating normal threads.
In my case, this is a one-time form, soliciting their feedback for volunteer time shifts (for a charity.) If there was a way to "force" them to visit it, I wouldn't have to keep reminding them of our deadline.
Thanks anyway...

What happens if we delete the thread that we forced the users to read? Will the affect of redirecting users to read that thread be uplifted? Will users who login later be directed to the homepage as usual? Cuz some users have reported they get the forceread message when they login but then when the thread is deleted it doesn't enable them to browse the forum and post. It's like their banned? :S

ya i had reports of people getting stuck at that message
not being able to go past it no matter what
and trust me they are not dumb kids either
is there a reason for that?
Had this installed and recently tested my registration procedure :-
When I register, the first thing I get is the pop up window with 'forced thread warning'.
When I click on it to read the thread it tells me that I do not have permission to read the thread, I have quite a few forums where members must make at least one post to view content, I tried to close the window and the only way I can close it it by using the 'x' on the top right. It then gives me another warning pop up with the same message because I had done a few forced readings for members.
It sure was a hassle to get into the forum itself that way. And this all happened before activation.
So if newly registered members encounter this before even activating their account????

I'm going to try to make it that they need permission to view the thread for this error message to come up. For now, dont delete theads before removing this feature and dont force users to read a thread if they dont have permission.

Greetings...We will use this on AVSForum.com when their is the option to do it by forum sections. More or less, if you mark a thread in a given forum area that must be read, it only shows the notice if a person is going to POST in that section. We only have a few "problem" areas and thus is the reason we would like to see this.
Watching closely!

Just wanted to install this but we noticed it cant be set per Forum.
Example:
----------------------------
Forum1
- SubForum1a
- SubForum1b
Forum2
- SubForum2a
- SubForum2b
Forum3
- SubForum3a
- SubForum3b
----------------------------
For Forum1 there is a Thread which is marked as "force to read". Now Users which access Forum1 or the Subforums in it 1a,1b, are forced to read this Thread.
If this will be possible, this Hack is going to be very usefull, because important notes (which differs from other notes in other forums) can be set to "must read".
We will take an eye on this Mod update and would be happy to see such changes :)

You can view the thread here
The link goes to http://forum.com/showthread.php?t=1

That's odd. I tested this on two of my computers and also had someone on the other side of the globe run the same tests. We both received identical results. If we used FF we did not get any notification, but when we used IE we both saw the notification. What are the odds that two people on two networks on two different sides of the planet have identical results to a test and the results are just flukes?

It has to do with shoutbox being the first to see that you need to view a thread. In the next version coming out soon, you will be able to disable this hack for 3rd part pages as well as many standard vb pages.

Version 1.2 (9/17/07):
[NEW] Added locations to show force read thread.
[NEW] Added option to just show when viewing certain forums.
[FIXED] User wont get force read error message if in a forced read thread.

Using Inferno Shoutbox Pro - would load the entire page in the shoutbox :? --- then using vBAdvanced --- Couldn't even load the main frontpage http://jpicforum.info --- Forum is in the root directory...
Aw :( I was hoping the next version would include a fix for the issue I posted; vBAdvanced and the Inferno Shoutbox Pro...
Anyway - Thanx for the upgrade - but is there a work-around so that the modification works with vBA installed?

It's fixed already. Just go to the settings of the force read and check for it to show on all pages except custom pages.

Looks like the instructions may need a look at when it comes to upgrading. I followed them to a T and it jacked up the menu to select "Manage Force Users to Read this Thread." If I skipped the template edit, all worked fine with the update. I don't think upgrading users need to worry about the template edits.

Thanks for the mod. I have two questions (one of which I'm not sure it is fixed in 1.2, but I think not):
1. when more than one thread is forced, people need to click the forced link untill the last forced message pops up. This means they won't be able to read the 'older' forced topics.
2. when people need to activate their emailaddress, the activation link won't work, cause the forced thread plugin will disable the activation (and showing the 'you need to read topic' message). It would be handy to make the plugin check if people are activated or not.
Of course a solution to number 2 would be to not include the unregistered and unactivated membergroups. But my experience now learns me that my admins and moderators forget about that and easily check 'all groups'.

Both are not a problem with the hack now.

thanks for the update! I was curious - if the option to show to everyone is checked, and the thread is in a hidden moderator forum, will members still be forced to view the "click this link" page? I am sure you took care of that with conditionals, but I was just curious.

Can this be implemented for a single forum only?
For example, say you have Forums A, B, C in your board. I wanna make it so users can post in A and B freely, but to post in C, they must view the required thread first.
It seems the default plug-in restricts viewing everything until the required post is read.
Thanks.

Hi, I need to know if is possible to force to read a diferent thread to diferents groups at the same time.
Example:
Usergroup Awaiting Moderation -> a thread about activation problem
Usergroup Affiliate --> a thread about quotas
Usergroup Registered -> a thread about how to affiliate in our club
Sorry for my english
Thanks

I posted a thread on my forum, and enabled it so it would force all users to read a certain thread, but one of my moderators reported that he was caught in an endless loop - when he clicked on the link to read the announcement he got a 404 error (page not found), therefore was in an endless loop. I fixed the problem by uninstalling the plugin. I know that this did not happen to everyone on my forum, but it happened to him - just thought you should know.

Great, installed!
This is absolutely what we was looking for. Thank you for integrating the Forum/Usergroup selection :)
Edit: It would be great if it is possible to see which Threads does have a Rule set.

Is there a way to have this be a monthly thing? Like on the first of each month, users would be required to view the thread?

No, you have to make sure the usergroups can read it.

Not yet. Hope to add some day. Maby as a separate hack though.

You should be able to do this. Just go to each thread and put there what usergroup has to read it.

You currently have to manually reset the counter if you want your users to get forced to read the thread again. I may an option soon though.

I just installed this and it's a great mod. Here's one suggestion, however:
Perhaps display a list of threads that the users have to view before they can continue normal browsing. The way it is now, users may get frustrated or confused when there are multiple required reads, but they receive the same error message. When they see a list of "required read" threads, then they will at least know they have more than one and it shows which threads they have left to read.
Don't know if this was already suggested or not, but regardless, this is a great mod.

that is a great idea
because i have members saying that they cant get past that message
they say after the view the thread they still get the need to read a thread message
so i basically have this mod disabled because i hate hearing all the complaints
if you can add that feature i will deffantly re install it and recomend it to others

Indeed, I figured this may be a problem for some. With a list of required reads, the mod would definitely be much more friendly for the users.

i guess the last version doesn't work too well with vbadvanced, as i get a db error every time i go to the homepage, with Database error in vBulletin 3.6.7:

in the homepage, the forumid is null (of course) and the database call is force_read_thread.force_read_forumid IN () wich of course gives error
it can be solved adding 'adv_index' to the excluded scripts in the plugin located at global_setup_complete but, what for all the other 'non standard' scripts?

Right now you have either all or non for non-vb pages.

The upgrade didn't work for me, it now malfunctions and the page stays locked on the message page, clicking the link doesn't take you to the thread, just stays on the same message page , we were all effectively locked out of the forum until we disabled the feature.

It says that using the forum settings overrides the above settings. Does that include the usergroup settings or is it just the other location settings?

Okeedokee, it turns out one of our admin moved the thread after it was forced, I'm assuming this is what caused the problem. Will reinstall and test tonight.
