No, I'm using my own table (vbarticles_articles). I'm always trying to avoid dealing with vb database to keep my modules compatible with upcoming and previous versions.

I have installed; great MOD. A couple of things however. I created a test article in the category "lieterature". The 'article by category' listing has a (1) next to literature, but when I click on this category, I get "No Articles found in this Category". I am able to access the test article from the 'Newest Author' area. Also, the category images are not showing up. I have uploaded everything and set the permissions, but I get the dreadful RED X grahic.

Figured out the reason why article not showing. Must first approve article. Still unsure about the graphics not showing.

Also figured out the image problem. Went to ACP and changed in category manager "vbarticles/images/cat2.gif" to "cat2.gif"

A couple of bugs, but perhaps it is just because I have 3.6.2 running?

1) When you have 10+ categories, and you order said categories, it doesn't know that 10 is greater than 9. If you want that 10th category and beyond, you have to use 91, 92, 93+ to numerically "order" the category display.

2) Carriage returns do not work in the articles. You can have 20 paragraphs, yet the entire article will have just 1 running paragraph with no formatting. I'm sure this is just a bug or an issue with having 3.6.2 vb version, but it is a deal breaker unfortunately.

I'm hoping there's a solution to problem #2 as this is a very promising hack.

Maybe whoever posted that artcile didn't format with paragraphing. When I did an article on my site, after a paragraph I hit enter, and it started a new paragraph.

I just upgraded to 3.6.4, and I'm having the same problem...no paragraph formatting. I even uninstalled vbarticles, then reinstalled it after upgrading to 3.6.4, still, the paragraphs not formatting bug exists.

Sorry but no. As I wrote many times I'm using my own style in coding modules, to keep them compatible with any newest or previous versions of vB. That's why my modules are using with versions 3.5+ and 3.6+ without even a single code change.
From the other side if you uninstall the module, what you want to do with the data?

I've updated the zip file to correct a bug with broken links in categoris. For those who've already installed it, just edit categories from your admincp, changing the photo's path from:
vbarticles/images/cat1.gif to cat1.gif only.

That's the terrible way on indexing on numeric fields. That's why I'm always starting numbering from 11 or 101 depending on how many items I believe that I'll have.
In any case I think that I'll remove this indexing replacing it by AZ or record number.

This module, as it's here it's totally free without any time limit. Copyright removal costs $25.
A question now: GARS is a module for vB or a RSS feeds system? If it's the second I'm also bought it for one of my other sites, but this is in different category. My module is not feeds fetcher in any way. Is a community module where users are posting articles (stories) to be reading, reviewing and rating. The commercial version has also multimedia features, but sure none feed fetcher.

I'll check the code, as I just cut lines from the commercial version to publish the Lite version and maybe I cut some lines mores..:rolleyes:

Admins and Mods can edit other files in 2 ways:

If they've approval on, then on any new article or any modification of the article.
In frontend, in full article view at the bottom you can see a Delete or Set/Unset as Editor choice (if you're logon as Admin/Mod).But what exactly do you mean editing an article? Admin can edit only some parts: eg moving category if the user has post it in wrong category. If you mean, editing the article itself (text), no they can't.

I think this is an incredible mod Mary, one that I will most likely buy, and I will definitely nominate as Mod of the Month. It just needs to be tweaked a little (especially the paragraph issue). Keep up the great work! :)

2) I have never had any such problem with my own editor in my own forums. I can copy/paste, and create articles there as well, w/o problem.

However, I just created a new article, using the editer that vbArticles has, and the same exact problem (no paragraphs) exist.

nice work, im also using GARS currently but this looks quite neat as well, ps your last statement about GARS. GARS is not got anything to do with RSS is just converts users threads from specific forums into either reviews, articles, website showcase, recipe showcase etc. it is easily changed to meet the admins needs.

however this one looks very good for a free option so far. I will defently be checking this one out as well. the only problem I see so far is this.

If I decide to uninstall this down the track because it becomes buggy or because I no longer want it installed. Ill loose all the articles as well because they are not stored in vb? Is this true. as i think loosing members data over something like this is quite bad.

Even though the text in the edit box looks good, as soon as you re-submit it, you lose all the paragraphs -- UNLESS you add them all back in before you save it.

No, it was in my first (not released) version but I deactivated it and I'll explain the reason. Don't forget that that the module has rating system. This rating maybe according a good image, or a good audio file or video file and gets high rating. If the user has the ability to change this image/audio/video the rating will remain the same, somthing that is not good as this rating was for something else.

I'm not the God and for sure not all my ideas are correct. But this is what I've thought. Maybe I'm wrong.

Seeing an article in full page on the right column there are some info for author and one of them is "Top Article" and a link below "Read all". Clicking this you get all articles by this author. For those of you who post problem with loosing paragraphs etc, I made a search at vbulletin.com forums and I found a thread about it.

Seems that copy+paste dosen't works all the times with the editor. As the support staff there is suggesting is better to paste the text firstly to notepad and then re copy and paste it to your article.

That user (who hasn't problem with other copy+paste in the same installation) followed the advice and worked.

Please try this methond and let me know. Of course I'll continue searching for it.

Nice, that might be exactly what i was waiting for. I really need an article system that will be used as wiki / HowTo Replacement for our community site, this might really be the right solution for this.

I think i should really be buying the full version, but there are some open issues before this. What i really need is that it's possible to add images to an article, for example a installation tutorial with stepbystep photos of the procedure. I know it's possible vie the img tag, but do you think a integration into the editor would be possible?

Second is that it should be possible for a special usergroup that will maintain the article system to edit posts e.g. when there are spelling errors or something like this.

Third, a email notify about new posted articles to this group would be nice, to have articles approved asap.

What do you think about my thoughts?

For those who had problem with unformatting paragraphs, I think that I resolved the issue. Just look at your editor and make sure that the "Switch Editor Mode" (right top side) is there. It must be there and activated (as it's here in vBorg).

Also for those who want to make the editor area bigger, let open vbarticles.php and search for 'qr' . It is in 2 places. Then replace 'qr' with 'fe' .

Everything is phrase based and no word exist hard coded. Especially for the "title" i went one step ahead and I added a phrase vbarticles_navbar just for the navbar.

What i really need is that it's possible to add images to an article, for example a installation tutorial with stepbystep photos of the procedure. I know it's possible vie the img tag, but do you think a integration into the editor would be possible?

To be honest I used the internal editor just to avoid complains from users. I had in my mind a more featured rich editor with which you can add more photos in the body, setup up them by resizing, speciying placenemt etc, even adding caption on a photo. Still haven't droped this idea.

Second is that it should be possible for a special usergroup that will maintain the article system to edit posts e.g. when there are spelling errors or something like this.

Negative and I'll never let editing the body article by anybody. That's illegal. Nobody can change a text (so the meaning too) of a post which has a signature of another person. As admin you can only edit the category in case that is posted in wrong category, or you can reject the article if you dont agree with it.


Third, a email notify about new posted articles to this group would be nice, to have articles approved asap.

Current version sends email to admin for this reason. It's easy to extend this function.

That's easy as I've already done half the work, setting permissions for "mod". The only that lest is to add a link in member's menu "Approve Profiles" visible only to right usergroup. I wrote it down for next update.

This seems to have fixed the bug and resolved my biggest concern, thank you. :)

A couple things though...

1) In the AdminCP, under the vBArticles - Choose Editor does indeed show a blank page, not sure if it is still supposed to do this.

HOWEVER...

2) The editor choice does display when creating a new article, so that resolved the issue of non-paragraph formatting.

3) To prevent my users from selecting the editor mode that does not format the articles properly, I changed the 2 instances of :

$show['qr_require_click'] = 0;

to

$show['fe_require_click'] = 0;

And that removed the option for members to be able to select the non-operating editor.

Thanks again for the fix. I'll be purchasing the full version pretty soon. ;)

1) What about mass moderation? Let's say that you want to move several articles into a different category...or perhaps delete 20+ articles. There doesn't seem to be a way to do this efficiently. It looks like one has to go to each article and click the delete button.

Also, if someone puts their article into the wrong category (and the option to approve is turned off, or perhaps the admin/mod just spaced it and wasn't paying attention to the category), then the site is out of luck as there is no way to move someone ELSE's article. We have to instead ask the author to move his own article...this seems incredibly inefficient.

Any plans on resolving this?

Or is this supposed to be done via "Manage Articles" in the admincp? If so, my page is blank other than the field names at the top of the page. No articles are displayed despite having articles existing.

2) Currently, these areas of the vbarticles admincp are blank or have no data:

Have you any active article that has already been set as Editor's choice. At that list appear only articles that are already marked as Editor's choice, giving you the ability to unmark them.
If you want to mark an article as editor's choice you've 2 ...choices:-)

This does not appear for me. The only admin option I get is "Delete". I used 2 different admin accounts to test this. Could the fact be that both accounts belong to sub-groups as secondary usergroups be affecting this?

But photos /tmp / directorys were not already there.
only images and video where there by default.
I had to make directorys for /photos /tmp /photos/thumbs.
I did chmod 777 those newly created directorys.

i really really really wish admin could edit the body of the articles, for one, its NOT illegal, if so vB itself would not exist, admins have the ability to edit any post

#2 example: a user spends the time to write a review and for whatever reason the user never comes back, and he has hotlinked to an image and the host of the image changes it to another image or the link goes dead, then admin can only move or delete a great review because he cannot edit the review

#3 example: same premise as above, a user posts a great review for a product with an external link to another website, that website changes ownership and now the link points to a porn site, instead of admin editing the review itself by simply taking the link out or changing it to a proper link, the admin is forced to delete a perfectly good review because the original user in no longer a member

I must agree the not having the ability to edit entries is a killer on this mod. I'm not about sit around and approve everything submitted by 3000 members. Not only would it severely delay the posting process it would be a real PITA. A few of my members are also allergic to spell checkers. Being able to edit something to make it readable is a necessity.

i agree to the fact that an admin is responsible for all text and grafic at a webpage so he has to have "edit"-permissions on articles. this fact should be published to everyone that wants to publish an article via vbarticles. the examples dsotmoon posted are perfect. as admin you can edit every single thread and post. why not add a forced "edited by [AdminName]"-tag when admin edits an article, instead of completely forbitting the edit-feature.

1) Is there a possibility to get a page like your index.php?page=vbavbarticles without having vbadvanced installed? I don't use it nor any other portal system. Others users don't use vbadvanced as well. Could you create a .php where all the boxes from your index.php?page=vbavbarticles show up in a similar way?

But following your hint I visited your site and read about a "new vbarticles" which sounds really interesting to me. I just released the new commercial version of vbArticles and in a couple of days I'll release the new freeware too. Some additions that will be in the new (Free) version are:

Admin can setup if in the site will be shown user's photo or user's avatar.
Admin can hide/unhide the right column in full article view.
Admin can choose my style for headers in front page or he can turn them off and use default style.

I like the idea of this, but she cant even answer a few questions about this module.I believe that some of it may be the fact that, based on her postings, she's not as well-versed in the English language as you or I. I would guess she is not from the USA (just a guess).

But beyond the personal aspect: I, too, have considered buying the commercial version, but there are just too_many_bugs in the free version to feel confident in paying for this mod.

I will say that, being that this is a BRAND NEW mod - and very buggy at that - her coming out and all but DEMANDING that you start sending your hard earned cash her way is, in fact, a bit pushy.

I mean, just in the last 10 minutes, I've found that:

1. When I DELETE an article, I get several php errors when it tries to unlink the attached image. No big deal, as the article does get deleted, but if she expects me to pay for this, it has to be without glaring bugs like this. (yes, all my directories are correctly chmod'd).

2. The missing paragraph thing STILL plagues many (yes, I have enabled the Enhanced Editor and even have selected it), but it doesn't always work. And ANY time I go back and EDIT a previous article, it looses all the paragraphs, too. No WAY I'm going to pay for software THIS buggy.

3. Look at the SQL for determining the "Newest Author":

That's the difference between commercial and free version. Not really the added features but support. If you check my forums you'll see that from the first day I've solved it and post report in my forums. Go there to check that I'm saying the true. Even if you're breaking the licence now (have you read it?), what I can say is:

Maria, I love ya and your mod here and will definitely purchase it soon when some of the bugs are worked out (I'm confident they will be :) ), but the statement that vbArticles is working fine, is not true (unless you have resolved the issue recently).

So while it may work from time to time, it doesn't always work. I think that is a more accurate statement.

I installed this hack, not doing much right now since the site is just open to public since 24 hours...
I do think it is time to stop ranting here.
It is FREE software you download here. It is indeed promising a lot of features and let's be honest, did it crash your database/server ? Is it absolutely not working ? Is it THAT bad, common, those that code... this is not just rubbish, it is a nice template that with some time and POSITIVE help/feedback from us all be debugged and made good.
And like she said... how many bugs has Vista ???? You dear to speak like this to Bill Gates ... we all know the richest man with the poorest product but the best marketing machine...

From the new version and then I think that it will be difficult. In my new commercial version I've replaced vB editor with a commercial HTML web editor which has no any problem and much more features than vB's (eg upload flash, audio, video, build in shared gallery etc).

The problem is that as this editor is a commercial one, I can't include it in the Free version according to author's licence. And that's logic. I can't add in a free software something that costs around $100. I've asked the author if he can product for me a lite version of it to include it in the next free upgrade just to keep compatiblity for those who will want tu upgrade. But till now I've no any reply from them.

Also keep in mind that the commercial version will be $34.90 instead of $24.90 for the same reason menthioned above.

No because tables from 2nd use will replace tables of 1st use. Except if (in your own risk) modify the code.

Demo in my site has the commercial version and not the free one. In my commercial versions I've added a third party (commercial) editor to avoid problems with vb editor. It can upload not only images but flash, audio and video in the article body. Much more it has shared gallery to choose ready files.

I'm having a problem (not bug) and still haven't decide how to solve it. What editor to include in free version. Finally the author of the editor that I'm using in the commercial version didn't gave me authorization (even if I was to pay for it) to include even a part of his editor in a free script. From the other side I don't like to use vb editor as it brought many problems and I didn't got support from them, even here.

Sorry but I can't add this function because it is already in my commercial version (audio & video, plus special editor which supports all media types included flash files). Finally i dont believe that $27.50 is a big amount.

As for the other you need to make a lot of modifications to use it twice in your site.

I have to say, in spite of what I said before... I had a chance to try the commercial version, which from my testing is bug-free (well nothing is truly bug-free, but I didn't find any problems or errors).
And it completely changed my mind.
To me, the free version has a lot of potential and in some scenarios it's just what you need, but the commercial version is a really outstanding piece of work.
It does what it should, it works very well and I'm very glad I got the commercial version. Just blows you away!

1.- Related articles are articles belonging to the same category but NOT to the same author.
2.- Please not as you'll confuse the users. I dont know what bug you found in navbar but for the title if you mean that allows empty titles to be saved I've corrected it and it will be on the next upgrade.

I installed this mod on my test forum to see how it looks and functions along with vbMates. It installed wonderfully so is the vbMates but i found just one problem with vbArticles. It doesn't wrap itself inside my portal. I'm using MKportal (http://www.mkportal.it) as frontend for my forum. I'm trying to figure out why vbMates wrapped itself beautifully inside MKPortal though. This is what happened: whilst vbMates inherited the header that my portal and forum shares, vbArticles still uses the already reverted vb header and refuses to wrap inside the portal. It opens outside.

I hope to buy the commercial version but i still want to know if it can display correctly inside the portal just like vbmates.

Strange. I'm using exactly the same code for templating headers and main table. Before buying the commercial version wait a couple of day till the upgrade of free version, in which among the others I've give to admin a switch to turn of my special table's headers with standard style headers.

First check something that made me lost a whole day thinking that it was bug in my code. From your admincp check your PHP info. See what value has upload_max_size . If you see something like was mine (2MB) you can shoot your hosting provider:)

But before it check that directories:
/photos
/tmp
/thumbs (under photos)
are cmod 777

I just noticed... sound file?? But free version supports only upload for images and not audio and video.

If the article's number isn't real , a page full of erronated database will appear .
If some body spells the adress incorrectly , a redirect page will appear with an ''vbarticles_no_article' (this phrase doesn't exist) .

Cane some body solve this problem ?

What do you mean by saying "if article's number isn't real"? That someone instead to click a link, he is typing by hand an article's number on the browser's bar? If yes, then sorry but this members isn't using your site but he is playing with you site, so a database error to you to know who is playing with you and see his IP is a good way I think. Otherwise there in no way to get this error. All links are working fine getting the right article nbr and you never see an error like this.
And as I can understand from your example with article nbr 200000000, you're also playing with me.

that's not always true... suppose u have article, and google indexes it... than u decide to remove article, and google sends visitor to ur article that doesn't exist... than he'll receive error messege and never ever come back to ur site!

Same thing is happening to me. Google indexed a lot of test articles, which I deleted and I am getting tons of those database errors. An error message would have been more elegant and more professional for the site.

I have just installed this and went to upload the first test article - got a blank page. I am in the 'admin' usergroup and all permissions are set to 'Yes'. I had previously created two new categories appropriate to our forum then deleted the ones it came with.

Hello Bob,

You can create unlimited categories, or edit/delete the existings. It's not a problem. But about the blank page I want the installation URL to check it out. Nobody reported a problem like this.
