I'm hoping if the maximum avatar sizes could be changed to 100 x 100 pixels. 80/80 doesn't impress me.

you can change that in your Admincp/Usergroups!

I think he means on this site, he isn't an admin, so he can't change it ;)

For me 80x80 is perfect, 100x100 is too large :)

I don't see why so many people need avatars to be 100x100. Avatars that are 80x80 can show nearly the same amount of detail as an avatar set at 100x100. Aside from larger file sizes, it'd just make threads even longer. Unless someone makes a post with three paragraphs, or uses a quote within it, it's just going to extend their post vertically another twenty pixels. That may not seem like much, but for those of us who have 100 posts per page, it'd be a lot longer.

No thanks. =\

I think it would be a nice gesture if staff gave the members the option for a 100px by 100px dimension option. I don't think they will though going by past experiences though.

Oh I dunno, just look at some of the signature sizes.

Sadly I'd have to agree with you. We can live in hope though.

Posting negative comments about the staff is not the best way to ask for change.

That's true, but I've tried to be civil and it hasn't helped in the past so I see no reason to change. Anyway, I won't beg just to get an extra 20pxs by 20pxs. :)

Oh I dunno, just look at some of the signature sizes. There are also specific rules set for signature restrictions within the rules. I'm referring to what could be; not what is.

Reason why small avatars size is better
-Quality is nice
-Image has the taste

Reason why huge avatar is bad
-Quality is bad
-Image has no taste when it's enlarge
-Makes forum table look bad (depending on the skin)
-Looks croppy when it's 100x100 or more.

It's like making an image from 24x24 to 100x100. What will the outcome be? TERRIBLE

80x80 or less is better. It's best to reduce the size and the best program to do it, it's photoshop ;)

Avatars that are 80x80 can show nearly the same amount of detail as an avatar set at 100x100.

Actually, it depends on the design and the tools/techniques used.

Anyway, carry on... :)

I personally find avatars over 80px too large and distracting from the actual content we are here to read.

I agree - Avatar size limits used to be smaller (IIRC 64 * 64), and it was just recently changed to 80 * 80. I honestly don't see a reason why we would need 100 * 100.

J/K ---> Actually made my avatar to fit to vB.orgs avatar rules - seems OK to me.

I agree with the '80 px max' limit.

Regarding the Staff Avatars here.. on ALL sites, Staff are outside the normal rules, so it doesn't seem to make much of a difference to me that we have extra wide ones. :)

Higher res monitors make larger avs a big bonus. 80 x 80 is pretty darn small on a large LCD.

Size is a non-issue IMO. What are we talking about anyway? 1~1.5 k?

When accumulated over all the members and guests viewing all of the pages on the site, it adds up.

It is for people on 56k or less.

Even with avatars, sigs and images turned off and just 5 posts per page it takes forever to load (currently relegated to an ancient 28.8k connection).

I've noticed that one member is using an avatar larger than the "members" limit.

Please explain that one? I'm sure favourtism isn't a trait here. https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/member.php?u=9948

Nothing to explain, he was a moderator when he uploaded it, should he ever decide to change it, then he won't be able to use one bigger than 80x80.

His avatar hasn't been changed since he was on staff.

I was just teasing about the staff avatars actually.
I do tend to love the customized look of the staff avatars on vB.org - may even do something similar on my forum = insinuates "togetherness" and unity, which is ALWAYS lovely :)

I belong to a lot of forums and the avatar rules are different on a great many of them. I use the same avatar on most forums, customized to fit the color scheme and size restrictions. If they allow 100x100 avatars, I'll gladly use a 100x100. If it's 60x60, I don't care. On my own forums, the rule is 100x100 maximum. The rules on my forum apply to everyone, including staff.

I had a member complain that my signature image was larger than the rules allow and he made a big deal out of it on other forums. I guess he didn't know how to check the properties to see that my sig was maximum size and no larger. Others had smaller signature images. But I decided then that I would not put up with the notion that staff, including me, were above the rules. We set the example and expect all members to follow it.

This is not meant to denigrate the rules vB.org. I have no problem complying with and accepting the rules here.

Seems like a shortcoming in vBulletin, although I can understand why.
