We get a lot of referals from Google - and have an excellent Google Archive presence will this disturb that?

Thanks

Or can past threads be tagged retospectivly?

Also using the moderator tools will I be able to mass tag stuff?

Thanks!

When i said vb gallery i was referring to the vb intergrated photopost. It rewrites the urls, for example it changes the directory /gallery to /forums and so none of the images are their and none of the links work. I use the gallery so much that i cant not use it so that i can use zoints seo.

a) Switch to a better host.
b) Don't use mod_rewrite - turn it off in vB Options and don't bother with the .htaccess file.

When i said vb gallery i was referring to the vb intergrated photopost. It rewrites the urls, for example it changes the directory /gallery to /forums and so none of the images are their and none of the links work.I'm pretty certain I've figured out why I haven't experienced problems with vBGallery (and other addons) while using Zoints SEO - I have vBa CMPS wrapped around everything and forums in root dir = not standard.

So I worked out a possible fix.
If anyone wants to try this (without guarantee!) to get Zoints SEO working on sites with photopost's vBGallery (may also solve the incompatibility with vBadvanced Links Directory) I'm fairly/quite confident it may work. (I apologise for the vagueness but I don't have good test installs at present :()

in the "Zoints SEO" plugin at parse_templates (on line #1),
originally (Zoints SEO v 2.2.2) it should beif ($vbulletin->options['zointsseo_on'] AND $vbulletin->options['zointsseo_rewrite_urls'] AND VB_AREA == 'Forum' AND !defined('VBA_PORTAL'))change VBA_PORTAL to VBA_SCRIPT,
ie REPLACE line#1 withif ($vbulletin->options['zointsseo_on'] AND $vbulletin->options['zointsseo_rewrite_urls'] AND VB_AREA == 'Forum' AND !defined('VBA_SCRIPT'))
this should prevent the <base href=""> tag being added to the header which I think was the problem.

Again, apologies for the lack of testing of this before offering it as a possible solution.

I installed Zoints SEO, but it started causing conflicts with other software that I am using with the forums and unfortunately, I had to remove it. I came here for instructions how to remove it and I was told to use the uninstall via the product manager and remove the files from the installation (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?p=1102381#post1102381).

I did this, but I am still getting database errors in my email. It says:

Database error in vBulletin 3.6.2:

Invalid SQL:

How can I repair my vBulletin database to get it working without errors, before the Zoints SEO installation altered it? Or, what did Zoints SEO do to alter my database?

Any advice/direction appreciated.

Problem with mod rewrite. I added the code to the .htaccess and uploaded it. I click enable mod rewrite. Now when you visit the categories I get the page can not be found what am I doing wrong?

This how I added the code...

Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine on

RewriteRule ^([a-z0-9_\-]*-(f|all)[0-9]+(p[0-9]+|/index[0-9]*)?\.html)$ forumdisplay.php/$1 [QSA,L]
RewriteRule ^([a-z0-9_\-]*-(t|p)[0-9]+(p[0-9]+|/index[0-9]*)?\.html)$ showthread.php/$1 [QSA,L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(index\.php|\.css) [NC]
RewriteRule ^(archive|sitemap)/(.*)$ $1/index.php/$2 [QSA,L]

I've been doing some more prodding at the code to see if it's extendable to rewriting the vBGallery urls, so far it looks doable. Not quite at a usable stage yet,
although www.spoiltcat.com/julian_cope-i1444.html (http://www.spoiltcat.com/julian_cope-i1444.html) is much prettier than unrewritten www.spoiltcat.com/photos/showimage.php?i=1444 !!

I'd like to reiterate, pleased do not install this hack unless you are well educated when it comes to SEO.

Be patient, take a step back, see if the community develops it. If not, you're better off with your default forum setup.
I agree fully - looks like sitting and waiting does not solve problem of zero users on the site ;)

I am abserving your piece of software very carefully. Since I am operating two really BIG forums (+2.000.000 posts each) vBSEO does not work for me. Simply mod_rewrite with over 2500 users online can kill each and every server on this world. I bought vBSEO, tried it, killed all my 5 servers in 30 seconds and got my mony back after a week of fighting with code optimisation.

That's why I like your soft - it does not want to kill my machines by overusing mod_rewrite ;)

First problem - it is for 3.6.1, while I have 3.6.2 installed. :(
Second problem - php 4.x.x compliance?
Third problem - necessity to recrawl the whole site (aprox. 4.000.000 of pages per site!)
Last questio-problem - if I will join the Zoint Network, do you give me some support?

Regards
Tom

I'm not going to try and talk you into using Zoints SEO because I don't think you should use it. My suggestion is to wait for someone (or us) to tear apart Zoints SEO and provide the useful plugins as separate installs. Then pick and choose which you feel would benefit your forum. I'm a Big-Board owner myself and know all too well the special issues you have to deal with. Stick with your default url schema. mod-rewrite and keyword-in-url.html are overhyped and can do more harm than good.

As for joining the Zoints Network, at present, we're closed to new forums. However, that will soon change...

would like something that better correlates to zoints and has the features of this free vbseo generator and it's autosubmit to google

rogersnm

It has less features but it does the job. A lot better than vBSEO in a copuple of test forum cases. IE. Same DB, vBSEO: 2 more listings, Zoint SEO: 1200 more listings. Both on the same server with similar URL's.

I may just take this one up, I've developed member pages rewriting as well.

Here is the link to my archive/sitemap post install:

http://www.chaosforums.com/sitemap/

You will notice as you click on the links it will not take you any deeper into the archive. I think its the .htaccess file messing things up, but cant tell.

im running 3.6.3

There's another problem: If you guess the ID of a thread in a private forum you can see the title, because you will be redirected to the rewritten url (with the keywords from the title) before you see an error mesage.

Jet another one: If you go to http://www.chaosforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1 you will be redirected to http://www.chaosforums.com/managements-corner-f1.html?f=1 so the parameter f=1 is suffixed, tough we don't need it.

I'm pretty certain I've figured out why I haven't experienced problems with vBGallery (and other addons) while using Zoints SEO - I have vBa CMPS wrapped around everything and forums in root dir = not standard.

So I worked out a possible fix.
If anyone wants to try this (without guarantee!) to get Zoints SEO working on sites with photopost's vBGallery (may also solve the incompatibility with vBadvanced Links Directory) I'm fairly/quite confident it may work. (I apologise for the vagueness but I don't have good test installs at present :()

in the "Zoints SEO" plugin at parse_templates (on line #1),
originally (Zoints SEO v 2.2.2) it should beif ($vbulletin->options['zointsseo_on'] AND $vbulletin->options['zointsseo_rewrite_urls'] AND VB_AREA == 'Forum' AND !defined('VBA_PORTAL'))change VBA_PORTAL to VBA_SCRIPT,
ie REPLACE line#1 withif ($vbulletin->options['zointsseo_on'] AND $vbulletin->options['zointsseo_rewrite_urls'] AND VB_AREA == 'Forum' AND !defined('VBA_SCRIPT'))
this should prevent the <base href=""> tag being added to the header which I think was the problem.

Again, apologies for the lack of testing of this before offering it as a possible solution.

Seems to work fine. But there are to much other Bugs in this Hack. It is still absolutely unusable and brings more Problems than it is worth.

Example - forum/index.php is not longer active in navbar if you use vBa at forum/cmps_index.php and if you use a DirectoryIndex to forum/cmps_index.php. It rewrits to forum/ and you still go to Portal and not to the Forum.

It isn't. I posted on another site where the creator posts. Instead of replying with a possible solution, I was told that I should only use this if I have a very good knowledge of SEO.

Sorry, a good knowledge of SEO has nothing to do with a good knowledge of PHP/mysql.

Hopefully i'm just misinterpretting, but are you getting upset over the fact I didn't help you when the first line of this modification says:

And many subsequent lines say it is unsupported and released under the LGPL so that the community could further develop it?

I'm not upset, just dissappointed. It'd be much easier for you, as the author to find a fix than I. Many others have posted bugs with this paticular hack.

I like the idea of the hack itself and think it has lots of potential. Your other hacks work just fine with no problems and I'm using them as we speak.

I just think it would be better if you took a look at what some of the issues that people are reporting and see if they're easily fixed on your end. Otherwise, it does look unsupported.

Edit: I see the tick box for supported is unticked. So I stand corrected. It's not supported.

I understand your frustration and I'm sincerely sorry this modification has brought it on.

Do you REALLY need to use the mod_rewrite option? It's off for a reason, and that's because it doesn't do anything but make your urls a little prettier and cause lots of problems. Whereas the other aspects of this modification such as the forum by forum meta descriptions and improved archive navigation can help a lot.

Most of the "bugs" you speak of are mere incompatibilities with other hacks caused by the mod_rewrite.

I'm of the opinion that changing url structure on forums is no longer needed and can and usually does far more harm than good.

Yes, I've just noticed this problem as well and rapidly uninstalled the mod again. Essentially removing the archive will I suspect do more damage than they keywords etc will gain. Big shame, but in tandem with the other bugs I'm not sure it's quite ready for the big-time. Almost! But not quite.

Ok, here's some info: It currently gets all the thread and forum links and makes an xml out of them and that's all. I'm going to release just that soon as v0.2 and it will expand to include all url's made by Zoints SEO but because of the high demand. I am looking for a couple of beta sites though. NO harm can be done to the database by using the hack, I just want to make sure it works on different sites. Send me a pm if your interested.

You can remove the copyright if your are part of the Zoints network...

Q. Can I remove the little copyright notice in the footer?

A. Yes, one of two ways.

1. Join the Zoints Forum Network
2. Make a $100.00 or larger donation to the Electronic Frontier Foundation and email Zoints with a copy of the receipt at ZointsIsCoolAndIGaveMoneyToTheEFF@zoints.com

More FAQ's coming.

go to plugins>zoints seo>parse templates and look for the copyright part and removes it

use notepad to copy everything before you start taking stuff out in case you make a mistake

btw guys dont use mod rewrite unless your sure you will use it forever or youll end up losing all your pages in google due to the urls becoming dead

Nobody can tell how to change the .htaccess to exclude the /gallery folder?
Thanks

I've used this code to exclude folders from other rewrites with other programs, not sure if it will work in your case but why not try?

RewriteRule ^folder(.*)$ - [L]

replace *folder* with the name of the folder you want to exlude.

If you have more then 1 folder you must enter this code for each folder.

Be sure to place the code about in the middle of your htaccess.

Hope it works for you!

And this comment really bugs me as I am a seasoned seo for a few years,

"pleased do not install this hack unless you are well educated when it comes to SEO"

this is laughable!

EVEN IF YOU DO NOTHING, NO SEO MOD, your pages will get indexed by the top 3 search engines no matter if you use VB, SMF, or even PHPBB, with those funky crazy urls that every one says se's don't like :)

It requires absolutely NOT one ounce of SEO smarts to install a program to create "SE Friendly" URLS! In fact there are many blog plugins (FOR FREE) THAT DOES THAT!

I think it's a pitty that the top Forum scripts, VB included, DOES NOT COME with better SE Frindly urls out of box for free. I know that WOWBB does ($80) and accomplishes all this with a click of a button, unfortunately it lacks many other more important features. The point I'm trying to make is that all this should come with our forums, in the case with VB where we had to pay $150 for it is totally outrageous for us to have to pay another $150 for decent se friendly urls (seovb), or have to deal with a buggy unsupported freebie.

I appreciate Zoints SEO's effort, but they use vbseo and offer little in way of support. And to make a comment like you need some sort of seo experience to achieve this is well, ill advised.

I only hope either this seo plug in becomes ready for prime time *with* support, or VB wakes up and offers it's own because SMF is right on their heals for feature for feature, and they are 100% free! I use both so I am totally unbiased and simply call it as I see it :)

some of the code is not working like we want it and already replaced ;) )

However, we try to iron out now the bugs, then we will forward our modifications

Personally, I think DChapman is right. We have a fine piece of software here,
now it's up to us all to improve the code until such products like vBSEO are not
a MUST anymore and everyone CAN chose. vBSEO seems to be a fine product,
however, there has to be a free alternative for those that doesnt fit in their AUP
or can't afford the money. And last, opensource is not a must, but preferrable.

Installed the hack on my test board and can now see the options on the panel,
several template modifications where not done even though the board is completely clean and just installed prior to installation of this hack, so I went ahead and did the mods manually,

added the included .htaccess file to the forum directory (/testforum/)
when I set the "Rewrite URLs" option to "Rewrite URLs and insert keywords, using mod_rewrite", clicking on any forum or thread gives me a blank page with this line on top left corner "No input file specified."
the other "Rewrite URLs and insert keywords" works fine.

need directions on how to go about fixing it,
Thank you

As for fixing it if it's not working are you sure your server allows mod_rewrite?

thanx for the response, option two surely looks better, not sure if it necessarily works better or not as it is in fact shorter,

I was under the impression that adding the .htaccess would enable "mod_rewrite" at server, if not I suppose I need to contact them and have them enable it if at all possible.

Adding the htaccess file just means your trying to use mod_rewrite not actually installing it.

If you disable the rewrite of urls completely and use the standard vb navigation all is fine.

If you turn on the rewrite or the zoints nav in the archive, then the system hiccups and won't link properly, it just reloads the page.

That said, I've turned off the rewriting of the URLs since the big SEs are now able to spider dynamic urls anyways, and have turned off the zoints navigation in the archive. I did allow for the archive to be renamed however, and that is working as expected.

I don't know if anyone is working on this problem, but I cannot expect the zoints team to do it since they released it to us to finish up.

Any thoughts?

Pre-installation question:
With the above warning, I have to ask, Is this modification easily uninstalled in-case for some reason we need to uninstall it?

Also will you be developing newer version for each VBulletin upgrade.
I'm kind of weary when it comes to installing larger mods like this because of the rate of VBulletin's development.

Not acceptable 406 errors are sometimes indicative of a mod_security rule affecting the request.

You also want to be sure the file is uploaded fully and in the correct file mode.

Why in the world are you using two SEO mods? Delete one and use the other (I mean completely delete one. Do not use the .htaccess from vbseo for ZointsSEO)

I'm experiencing an odd problem when trying to submit a thread to user controlled sites like Digg, Meneame or Pligg based ones.

When I activate 301 redirect these sites take forever to accept the URL and if they do, they say they cannot retrieve the title due to a "414 Request-URI Too Large" error or a "403 forbidden", but usually those user content engines just reject the URL or think forever.

Of course, I can just deactivate 301 redirect but still troubles me because I had this redirection on without problems until a couple of weeks ago, and besides, these engines use remote voting buttons which detect how many votes a story has based on the URL... without 301 redirect the URL of a certain thread can be very variable:

vBSEO doesn't have any demo or limited version. You downloaded illegal version of vBSEO from a server or a warez board. I strongly advise you to contact vBSEO team and report them about where you downloaded the nulled version.

It's not an instantaneous thing - it takes time to get indexed in any search engine. Wait a few months. On the net, patience is the key.

Use the site:freehelp.co.il query to get an idea of how many and which pages Google has indexed. There are similar queries you can use for Yahoo and MSN.

You need to submitt your site to google

http://www.google.com/addurl/

You don't need to do this normally but it won't hurt,

Ok I see there isn't an answer for my question, but I have another clue. I found this site which allows a webmaster to see a page rendered in different browsers:

http://browsershots.org/

When I enter the SEOed URL for one of my forum news:

http://www.chilehardware.com/foro/ubuntu-y-linspire-t62423.html

I get the message:

Your request has been redirected. The server said '301 Moved permanently'. Please try again.

Ok, so the 301 redirection itself would be the problem... so we'll have to see another way to redirect normal URL to SEOed ones.

Amenadiel
02-12-2007, 06:12 PM
<font size="3">EDIT: 5 hours later</font>

I found out that the problem was in the plugin showthread_getinfo

For some odd reason, the line

if ($request_uri != $supposed_uri)

was always true, so even the SEOed URL were being 301 redirected.

I inserted a few debug lines and found out that $request_uri resulted in an empty string... WTF, perhaps that's because I have register_globals off.

Anyway, I replaced the $request_uri for the original command $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] and everything works fine now.

Could you explain the difference between "PHP over CGI" and "PHP as a module"?

When I select "Rewrite URLs and insert keywords", I get "No input file specified."
When I select "Rewrite URLs and insert keywords, mod_rewrite option", I get a "Page not found" error.

I have noticed that the forum dir is not listed in the link with the mod_rewrite option.

I am running PHP 4.3.11 on a Linux Apache (cgi-fcgi) server. Is it possible that I am missing a MIME type in my .htaccess?

Yes.

The vbseo sitemap generator produces a Google Sitemap (now also used by Yahoo and MSN Search).

The "sitemap" feature in Zoints SEO is about using the vBulletin Archive as a sitemap.

Not the same thing at all so they don't interfere with one another.

You really do NOT need mod_rewrite. No major search engine has trouble with the native vBulletin URLs. Use some of the other Zoints SEO features and turn off mod_rewrite. Apsart from being unnecessary, it does exact an extra load on your server,

I'm using ZointsSEO on my board to optimize the URLs, but I think they could be even more optimized for.

We have 3 common special characters in Denmark I wanna replace with something else than an underscore:
? should be replaced by ae
? should be replaced by oe
? should be replaced by aa
I would also like if the URLs look like http://domain.dk/thread/ID/title/ instead of http://domain.dk/titl-tID.html

Here's the .htaccess from ZointsSEO:

Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine on

RewriteRule ^([a-z0-9_\-]*-(f|all)[0-9]+(p[0-9]+|/index[0-9]*)?\.html)$ forumdisplay.php/$1 [QSA,L]
RewriteRule ^([a-z0-9_\-]*-(t|p)[0-9]+(p[0-9]+|/index[0-9]*)?\.html)$ showthread.php/$1 [QSA,L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(index\.php|\.css) [NC]

I have iTrader installed and configured to work in my classified section, but it doesn't agree with the SEO URL's of the threads. By this I mean that in order for feedback to be left for members, a thread URL needs to be submitted, but iTrader is not working with the Zoints SEO URL's.

Problem fixed with help from vbulletin-germany.com!

In file clientscript/vbulletin_textedit.js find:

if (is_ie7)
{
var returnvalue = window.showModalDialog("clientscript/ieprompt.html", { value: defaultval, label: dialogtxt, dir: document.dir, title: document.title }, "dialogWidth:320px; dialogHeight:150px; dialogTop:" + (parseInt(window.screenTop) + parseInt(window.event.clientY) + parseInt(document.body.scrollTop) - 100) + "px; dialogLeft:" + (parseInt(window.screenLeft) + parseInt(window.event.clientX) + parseInt(document.body.scrollLeft) - 160) + "px; resizable: No;");
}
else
{
var returnvalue = prompt(dialogtxt, defaultval);
}

Rewrite the red marked path with you full path like that:

if (is_ie7)
{
var returnvalue = window.showModalDialog("http://www.yousite.tld/forum/clientscript/ieprompt.html", { value: defaultval, label: dialogtxt, dir: document.dir, title: document.title }, "dialogWidth:320px; dialogHeight:150px; dialogTop:" + (parseInt(window.screenTop) + parseInt(window.event.clientY) + parseInt(document.body.scrollTop) - 100) + "px; dialogLeft:" + (parseInt(window.screenLeft) + parseInt(window.event.clientX) + parseInt(document.body.scrollLeft) - 160) + "px; resizable: No;");
}
else
{
var returnvalue = prompt(dialogtxt, defaultval);
}

It is not the best solutions but a good work-arround!

Known bugs

1. If a user disables cookies, infinite redirect loop.

I have a fix for this :-)

Create a new plugin for "vBulletin" (Maybe also for Zoints SEO, dont know, havent tested).
Hook: global_start
title: doesnt matter
Order: 1 (important!)
PHP-Code:
if(!$show['search_engine'] && $vbulletin->superglobal_size['_COOKIE'] == 0)
$vbulletin->options['zointsseo_on'] = false;

You can test if you want:

Search-Bots should not be affected from this little hack :)

take a look at this..

Options SymlinksIfOwnerMatch
Options +FollowSymLinks -MultiViews
RewriteEngine On
Rewritebase /
RewriteRule ^/?test\.html$ test.php [L]

this htaccess change test.php to test.html it works.But in zoints seo i should edit this lines like above..

RewriteRule ^([a-z0-9_\-]*-(f|all)[0-9]+(p[0-9]+|/index[0-9]*)?\.html)$ forumdisplay.php/$1 [QSA,L]
RewriteRule ^([a-z0-9_\-]*-(t|p)[0-9]+(p[0-9]+|/index[0-9]*)?\.html)$ showthread.php/$1 [QSA,L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(index\.php|\.css) [NC]
RewriteRule ^(archive|sitemap)/(.*)$ $1/index.php/$2 [QSA,L]

but how?

fixed :D

hallo,

i have 2 problems and i hope that someone can help me. I'm using Vbulletin 3.5.4.

1.) in the online.php the links are not correctly rewritten.
when a user is reading a thread, there just is a "is reading a thread" message, not "is reading thread XXX".

2.) in my archive there is a error. (http://www.zweeper.de/forum/archive/)
i can see the site, but when i click on a link, i just come again and again on the archive startpage. when i turn Zoints SEO off, its all correct.

i deactivated the follow options:

Rewrite /archive/ to /sitemap/
Use Archive as Sitemap
Use Zoints Archive Navigation?

(when i activate them, the error is just the same)

my htaccess file looks like this:

Options +FollowSymlinks

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^([a-z0-9_\-]*-(f|all)[0-9]+(p[0-9]+|/index[0-9]*)?\.html)$ forumdisplay.php/$1 [QSA,L]
RewriteRule ^([a-z0-9_\-]*-(t|p)[0-9]+(p[0-9]+|/index[0-9]*)?\.html)$ showthread.php/$1 [QSA,L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(index\.php|\.css) [NC]
RewriteRule ^(archive|sitemap)/(.*)$ $1/index.php/$2 [QSA,L]

i hope someone can help me, greetings, zweeper.

1. Are you on a server using CGI mode? If so, there seem to be some known problems with the archive.

2. Are you using mod_rewrite in Zoints SEO? If so, turn that feature off. You really do not need it with vBulletin 3.xx. The existing URLs are quite spider friendly.

Just a simple question
does URL 301 redirection use query ?
i mean when i link to showthread.php?t=X and then Zoints redirects to xxx, the redirection stage will use any query or PHP resources?

sorry my bad english

I'm having problems moving/merging posts :/

You have not specified a valid URL for the thread that you want to merge. Please check that the URL includes a valid threadid, "t=xxx" or postid, "p=xxx" (where xxx is a number).

My advice is to turn off URL rewriting.

1. vBulletin doesn't need it: all of the major search engines can spider and index the out-of-the-box vBulletin URLs without any modification at all

2. it won't help you with a vBulletin forum, notwithstanding popular clamorings to the contrary

3. it does add somewhat to server load - save that for features that actually matter and enhance your forum

My advice is to turn off URL rewriting.
Personally speaking I find URL rewriting to be a great service to members and the broader internet population when faced with a link whether or not it improves search engine ranking and so I despair when folk say "it adds nothing" - it can add context and information to real people.

To explain: the majority of the time folk cut & paste links from the url address bar and often with no context.
for example: "CHECK THIS OUT! http://www.spoiltcat.com/showthread.php?t=2083 " doesn't have any hints of what to expect, whereas rewriten " http://www.spoiltcat.com/danni_minogue-t2083.html " has already given away that the link (probably!) has something to do with Kylie Minogue's sister, Danni...
For casual browsers I've improved the quality of traffic to my site simply by the link identifying what it's about.

If the occasional search engine bumps me from ranked 103 to 102 because of it well that's a nice bonus...

djbaxter

1. That same information would probably be distilled from the content of the post/thread and a decent optimized page title without the need for mod_rewrite.

2. The majority of forum thread titles are so vague or generic or badly misspelled that the keyword-URL derived from them are virtually useless anyway.

I understand that the SEO benefits of rewriting forum thread urls is very debatable - I was pointing out an unrelated benefit for real human people rather.

Very often Joe Public won't take your links and give them good context, they'll be copy-pasted asis. For people reading those links pasted to other sites or in a blog, before clicking on it, a showthread link gives me no idea where I'll end up other than the domain and "it's a forum".

A rewritten url offers extra human readable clues BEFORE BEING CLICKED through to the page to discover the pagetitle or content.
It also reassures the copy-paster that they've pasted the correct link.

I was merely pointing out that SEO isn't the be all and end all reasoning behind rewriting obscure thread id number urls, people-friendly urls are as important to me as search-engine-friendly :)

...which I don't think will make the slightest difference to human visitors. They are going to click on links from a search engine and what will determine those links is a combination of how far down the list the link is and the snippet.

Nobody will remember anything except the domain and tld (forum.com) anyway.

mod_rewrite has its uses, primarily if the software you're usiing creates search-engine-UNfriendly URLs - vBulletin does not do that out-of-the-box so the impact of mod_rewrite is extra server load and little else - except for creating additional things that can go wrong, which is likely the case with the poster where I raised the issue in the first place.

They are going to click on links from a search engine and what will determine those links is a combination of how far down the list the link is and the snippet.your still thinking "search engines" when my poor writing was trying to avoid that.
Lots of important links to your site will (hopefully!) be posted in blogs, other forums, on folks' myspaces, sent via email, etc. In those cases a human-friendly url can be to your benefit in my opinion. Whether that or other considerations outweigh the server load impact will depend on a site by site basis.

This is slightly off-topic of specifically Zoints SEO though, oops :$

Anyone else? Please?merging has always worked fine with me using Zoints SEO - although to narrow it down you could try switching off the url rewriting temporarily and try merging, find out if that is what's causingthe trouble or if it's something else

If you have mod_rewrite for a while, and decide you don't want to use it - how detrimental would it be? Because I've had it for many months now - but I'm thinking about removing it.

well, you can unintall Zoins SEO but you should keep a .htaccess file that redirects all rewritten URLS (wich may be listed in Search engines and linked in your users postings as well) to the normal URLs.

Doing this you won't have any negative consequences (except from the SEO aspect..)

PageRank is strictly a measure of the number and quality of incoming links to the page.

If you follow all the instructions correctly, it shouldn't be a problem - it's working fine for me for vBulletin version 3.65.

1. There is a known conflict with vBGooglemaps - there is a fix for that however.

2. I recommend that you do NOT enable "seo friendly URLs" aka mod_rewrite. You really don't need it with vBulletin, it really won't help, and the majority of issues people have with this add-on are because of the use of mod_rewrite.

One point of clarification - if using Zoints, and the "use archive as sitemap" - does that mean that the vbSEO Sitemap Generator would be redundant and not needed? I don't have it installed yet, but it was on my list of "possible addons".

No. These are different things. The "sitemap" referred to in Zoints SEO is a standard sitemap, basically just a paginated listing of all the pages on a website. This is meant both for humans and spiders.

The sitemap generator add-ons (there are several) create an XML file that conforms to the specificatiuons for Google sitemaps, which has since been adopted also by Yahoo and MSN Search. This is intended so9lely to provide specifically formatted information to search engines.

You can use both and probably should, especially with a relatively new forum.

Has anyone successfully implemented this running lighttpd? I'm trying to swap over to lighttpd, and I've got the mod_rewrite running and put the rewrite rules in and nearly everything works, except when you click the "Arrow" on a forumdisplay that takes you directly to a certain post in the format :

http://www.url.com/forum/showthread.php?p=12345#post12345

This URL is rewritten as :

http://www.url.com/forum/thread-title-t123.html?p=12345#post12345

Apache can handle that, lighttpd gives a 404. Here's the rewrite rules I have in place for lighttpd. Anyone help?

He's right, I'm on 3.6.5, actually and it's working fine on Apache. I just really would love some insight on making this work with lighttpd. The rewrite rules just "almost" get there for lighttpd, and I've got mod_magnet installed, just don't know anything about using LUA for rewrites. Anyone got anything for me? I'm thinking about lighttpd serving all static content and forwarding any PHP/HTML requests to an apache back end, but I'm getting lag on certain web apps that I use (and others are fine). They work fine with just lighttpd, but I can't get the rewrites to work! :(

Installed it on 3.6.7 it wont work i get this.. installed added htaccess, what should it be CHMOD to?

Not Found
The requested URL /chat/intros.html was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.file

Turn off mod_rewrite.

vBulletin doesn't need it. And it won't help a vBulletin forum.

BUT I WANTED IT TO WRITE THE URLS TO website_link.html

Why? Did you buy the myth that static URLs are better in some way?

Google Facts & Fiction (http://www.google.com/webmasters/facts.html)

Fiction: Sites are not included in Google's index if they use ASP (or some other non-html file-type.)
Fact: We're able to index most types of pages and files with very few exceptions. A sampling of the file extensions we're able to index includes: pdf, asp, jsp, html, shtml, xml, doc, xls, ppt, rtf, wks, lwp, wri, swf, cfm, and php.

Google and Dynamic Pages (http://www.google.com/intl/en/webmasters/guidelines.html)

If you decide to use dynamic pages (i.e., the URL contains a "?" character), be aware that not every search engine spider crawls dynamic pages as well as static pages. It helps to keep the parameters short and the number of them few.

Allow search bots to crawl your sites without session IDs or arguments that track their path through the site. These techniques are useful for tracking individual user behavior, but the access pattern of bots is entirely different. Using these techniques may result in incomplete indexing of your site, as bots may not be able to eliminate URLs that look different but actually point to the same page.

Update to Google and dynamic pages (http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2006/10/update-to-our-webmaster-guidelines.html)

As the web continues to change and evolve, our algorithms change right along with it. Recently, as a result of one of those algorithmic changes, we've modified our webmaster guidelines. Previously, these stated:

Don't use "&id=" as a parameter in your URLs, as we don't include these pages in our index.

However, we've recently removed that technical guideline, and now index URLs that contain that parameter. So if your site uses a dynamic structure that generates it, don't worry about rewriting it -- we'll accept it just fine as is. Keep in mind, however, that dynamic URLs with a large number of parameters may be problematic for search engine crawlers in general, so rewriting dynamic URLs into user-friendly versions is always a good practice when that option is available to you. If you can, keeping the number of URL parameters to one or two may make it more likely that search engines will crawl your dynamic urls.

Does Google index dynamic pages? (http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=34431&ctx=sibling)
Yes, Google indexes dynamically generated webpages, including .asp pages, .php pages, and pages with question marks in their URLs. However, these pages can cause problems for our crawler and may be ignored. If you're concerned that your dynamically generated pages are being ignored, you may want to consider creating static copies of these pages for our crawler. If you do this, please be sure to include a robots.txt file that disallows the dynamic pages in order to ensure that these pages aren't seen as having duplicate content.

vBulletin by default removes session IDs for search engine spiders.
