why is it limited to forums? shouldn't it take into consideration all vBulletin powered components?
We based the rules off those at vB.com - that is one of the rules there. :)

Pointless isn't it.
Why would you call it pointless? We have alot of things vB.com has but just better, they should be the ones taking it off ;)

Its somewhat pointless, maybe a rules twist or a twist of some sort to possibly differ the two contests would be a good idea.

There are going to be major improvements to the Contests here at vBulletin.org in the near future. :)
I personally think BOTM is pointless. There is no stable rating.Everyone can nominate themselve. It is pointless.

What do you mean "no stable rating"?
The changes we are planning to make include judging criteria to help members in the voting proccess.

Again, a rule that exists at vBulletin.com.
The idea is that people who are proud of their site can submit it for seconding, regardless of any other factors (save having won it in the prior months' competitions).
Also, currently, not Anyone can nominate themselves. vBulletin.org staff may not nominate their own boards under the current set of rules. :)

I think it's a tad cheap that it's all done through a thread. Wouldn't it be better to just submit a website? It's got to get annoying for that poor staff member that has to comb through the BOTM Thread and write down each and every website that was voted for and how many times.

Yes, we are thinking about making a link directory where you could just submit your link then we could vote on that, but this still needs some thinking :)

ultimately, a change that doesn't require oodles of time to bring into effect is to make the BOTM of vb.org a SOTM in which all vBulletin powered products/pages/plugins collectively are judgable.
People spend hours, days, weeks and/or even months making vBulletin add-on's only to be told that they're not allowered to count on either site when this is primarily what this site is for.
I for one have worked hard on the next reincarnation of my site and ultimately would like to submit it here when i release it, but only if all of my work will be recognised as opposed to how good i am skinning the stock product.

That's true. We should seperate our BOTM from vB.com's. Judging the overall site -- including all its tweaks and modifications would be a great way of doing this.

Yes, we are working on making the contest more "modification" orientated, which means style and code modifications, and also more importantly: how these modifications improve the overall focus of the community.

But in this case you'll have to eliminate the non-english boards automatically. How can you understand a foreign language boards hack installation will effect " improve the overall focus of the community".
I think this system must be removed from vb.org because there is already one at vb.com and even that is not so popular at the moment. Instead of BOTM lets focus on Pimp my board. It is way better that way and way origin.
