View Full Version : Board Optimization - Welcome headers - Improve community registration rates
Ted S
06-24-2006, 10:00 PM
Attention vB 3.7 users: Please see the 3.7 version (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=165519) of this add-on.
The out of the box vBulletin style does not have a robust method of informing users about their current activity status or user level. As a result, guests entering on a page other than the homepage (which is most often the case) have no idea what a forum is about or that they may need to register. Additionally, there are no visible status indicators, making it confusing for unconfirmed, unapproved or new members to know what to do or where to begin.
To help solve these problems, the welcome headers plugin creates a 5-part set of conditionals to better introduce members to your community while pushing them to register, activate or post. The default templates are just that, default ? I highly encourage you to tweak the language and functions to meet the needs of your actual community environment.
Modifications/ Instructions:
Template edits: 2
Plugins: 1 (adds 1 template and several settings)
This template hack should take under 5 minutes to implement and customize.
What?s new in 4.2
The 4.2 version of this addon functions in the same way as previous versions but with modifications to the backend code. The addon is now designed to independently review conditional statements to make it easier to add new messages. If you are upgrading from a previous version and have changed the template welcome_headers, this version will revert your changes. There is no new functionality in this upgrade and it is optional.
Install Instructions:
Full install instructions can be found in the attached file. This addon requires adding a plugin and modifying one template.
Customizing the content / messages
To customize which messages appear or what they say, go to vBulletin options, select the "Welcome Header System" group and configure the options as desired. Each phase can be modified by adding translation text.
Details on how it all works:
Step One: Turning lurkers into Members
For most forums, upwards of 50% of traffic comes through search engines or deep links to threads, profiles and categories. Out of the box, vBulletin only displays a welcome message on the forum-homepage, meaning someone who enters through any other page does not have the benefit of seeing an explanation of the site or welcome message. The guest welcome header is used to explain the purpose of your site, sell users on the benefits of joining the community and push them to proactively register.
Step Two: Making Users Confirm their Account
Many vBulletin sites require email confirmation prior to being able to post or access an account. However, activation emails are often misdirected to spam folders, ignored or simply deleted, leaving unconfirmed users with little access rights and no explanation as to what is wrong with their account. The unconfirmed welcome header is used to inform unconfirmed members of their account status and to direct them to automatically resend their activation email, or to contact the webmaster for support.
Step Three: Get non-posting users to post
Another chronic problem faced by many forums is insuring users post after registering. Many new visitors register in order to access certain features with the intent of posting, but never do so. The never posted welcome header is used to encourage users to post for their first time and should ideally be linked directly to an introductions or new member forum to help users "break the ice".
Step Four: Getting inactive users to become more active
Many members start out as lurkers, register, post once or twice and then go back to being lurkers. Often time these members are not actively thinking about participating in topics or are still shy about interacting. The inactivity welcome header reminds members to make a post after a predetermined amount of time as specified by the forum administrator.
Step Five: General Announcements
Unfortunately the standard announcements are often overlooked or never even seen by members who use the "new posts feature". As a result, urgent notices may be missed by users causing problems and high volumes of support requests. The global announcement welcome header creates a message shown to all members who do not fall into the other welcome header groups (guest, unconfirmed, never posted, inactive). Whether it be a scheduled outage/ upgrade, an important request or the need to display an advertisement in a prominent spot, global announcements allow an administrator to effectively and quickly display messages in a way that is certain to be read.
Optional: One-View Messages
Some forums find that users grow tired of seeing the messages thus there is an option to show the welcome messages only once per browser session as determined by using a cookie.
Optional: Custom Messages
Welcome Headers addresses 5 common needs, your forum probably has more. I highly encourage you to add messages based on profile fields, user states and other criteria that may impact your users.
The results:
At first glance this system may seem a bit superfluous, however, the numbers rarely lie, nor does the feedback. On ScubaBoard.Com, the site the system was originally tested on, posting rates increased by over 100%; new user registration rates by over 60%; user activity by 50% and the welcome/ intro & greets forum has exploded over 400%. If you browse through the pages of this thread you will find even more real life testimonials and experiences from the thousands of people using the system.
vbSEO Add-ons
Some forums have found that after adding welcome headers, the welcome message shows up in their search descriptions. To address this issue, user's at vbSEO have recommended turning the guest welcome header into an image -- this way there's no duplicate content for the bots to spider. To learn more click here (http://www.vbseo.com/f28/how-make-your-welcome-headers-image-7549/). My recommendation is that you test this option if you are allowing bots to spider your front-end pages.
Limited Guest Viewing compatibility
The Welcome Headers System is designed to work with the Limited Guest Viewing (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=131985) without any conflict. To insure that welcome header messages do not show up at the same time as the limited guest viewing message, please be sure you are running welcome headers version 4.1.3 or greater and have enabled the suppression option.
Support
Please post any enhancement or technical questions you may have and I will do my best to respond in a timely manner. Please note: I can not guarantee an immediate response and am unable to assist with integrating this addon with other addons or with HTML related questions.
Updates
4.2.1 - Fixed bug with global message
4.2.0 - Changed template conditionals to simplify customizations
4.1.9 - Added ability to disable messages if using Limited Guest Viewing system
4.1.3 - Added support for Limited Guest Viewing system

Ted...
The problem seems to affect only users who are marked as Invisible. If you will note, when you are marked as invisible, the forum indicates your last activity date as whatever date it was when you were last VISIBLE. Apparently your code calcuates the most recent posts based off of the value that the forum stores as your last date of activity.
To test this theory, I turned Invisible mode OFF for my account and went into the Admin CP and ran the "Update User Ranks and Titles" maintenance routine. As soon as the update finished, the welcome header stating that I hadn't posted recently went away.
You might want to look into this.

It appears that for whatever reason, the last post date for mods is not being updated in realtime (although it is for regular members). As a result, administrators see the message when they shouldn't.
To get around this, I have modified the script to never show the message to administrators or moderators. This is not a final solution but should work for the time being.
Anyone who wishes to can upgrade by installing the new xml file and overriding the old version, or by updating the template directly.

You'd have to update your counters after posting as I described for TedS (see above) and then the message would go away. I believe vBulletin updates ranks and titles once exery XX minutes via a cron job so if you also just wait a while, you will notice that the message will stop being displayed to you w/o having to run the update manually.
As TedS has reported, for some reason moderator activity is not being updated in real time. I guess that's a question to be posed to Jelsoft.

Just to confirm my banner for nearly expired paid subscriptions modification detailed here (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=944463&postcount=746) still works with this version. As the location of where to put the template changes have changed I'll re-copy the original post here and update it.
If like me, you want a banner to be displayed to people who have a paid subscription which is about to expire, you can achieve it with the following.
Firstly create a global phrase named "welcome_soontoexpire" containing the message you want displayed. I chose the following...
<center><strong>Your Club Membership will expire in {1} days.</strong><br /><br />We hope you will choose to stay with us!</center>
...which will tell them their paid subscription is about to run out, plus it will tell them the number of days they have left.
Next edit the "welcome_headers" template and add...
<if condition="$headerexpiremembership != 0">
<!-- / membership nearly expired -->
<br />
<table class="tborder" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" border="0" width="100%" align="center">
<tr>
<td class="alt1" style="background-color:#FF0000;">
<phrase 1="$headerexpiremembership">$vbphrase[welcome_soontoexpire]</phrase>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
<!-- / membership nearly expired -->
<else />
...before this line of code.
<if condition="$wlhtime > $bbuserinfo[lastpost] AND $vboptions[wlhpostmoreoften] AND !is_member_of($bbuserinfo,6,5)">
Also add the following to the end of the template, just before the "<!-- google_ad_section_end -->" line...
</if>
Finally create a plugin for the "Welcome Headers" product with a hook location of "global_start". Set the title to "Soon to expire memberships", and add the following as the PHP plugin code.
$subscriptions_reminders = $vbulletin->db->query_read("
SELECT subscriptionid, expirydate
FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "subscriptionlog AS subscriptionlog
WHERE expirydate <= " . (TIMENOW + (86400 * 14)) . "
AND status = 1
AND userid = " . $vbulletin->userinfo['userid'] . "
");
while ($subscriptions_reminder = $vbulletin->db->fetch_array($subscriptions_reminders))
{
$headerexpiremembership = round((($subscriptions_reminder['expirydate'] - TIMENOW) / 86400),1);
}
That's it! It is hard coded to display the banner when the paid subscription has 14 days or less remaining. You can change the 14 on the following line to be however many days notice you want.
WHERE expirydate <= " . (TIMENOW + (86400 * 14)) . "

Currently, I added the welcome code below the nav as instructed (vbseo).
If you are using vbseo or perscribe to their ideas, you should not be moving the welcome headers anywhere. If however this is nto an issue, just plae the variable in the template of your chosing (i.e. the header template).

Modifications/ Instructions:
Template edits: 2
Plugins: 1 (adds 1 template and several settings)
This template hack should take under 5 minutes to implement and customize.
For someone that's never done a 'Template Edit', is there anything besides your instructions or the vBulletin Manual that explains it to new users? I've read thru both, but am still a little nervous.
Your instructions are well written, but for someone like me not knowing code structure I'm just unsure of a thing or two.
For instance, when you say:
Step 2) Adding the new headers
1. Select the header by double clicking on it.
2. Scroll to the very end of the template code.
3. Add the code $welcomeheaders
I read the note about vbSEO's recommendation and opened up the 'navbar' template to look at it. The last lines of code I see are:
<!-- / PAGENAV POPUP -->
</if>
So would you put the $welcomeheaders 'after' the </if> statement? Or does everyone (else) know it has to go just before such?
Anyway, thanxx for any more information anyone can give me.

What do Ineed to change to get this to ONLY show on the forums, and not my CMPS page guys?
I don't have the VBA in my forum folder, so all the 'register' and 'contact us' links on the header are screwed up when I'm on the CMPS. I would like to know how to fix them, but I kinda like the CMPS without the headers anyway.
Thanks for any help.

Ok, I've Googled and sorted my head out now.
Thing is, it's isn't in the portal output global variables list.
Nothing is. I haven't added the variable in the CMPS admin. Just installed this latest version today?
:surprised:
:edit: Meh. Guess it's going to be another <if> condition.
Disbaled the whole thing until somoeone can help me out.
My CMPS just has a log in module to the left, the rest is content viewable for people who don't even need to visit the forums if they don't want to so don't need to see a big block telling them to register.
This ruins the layout completely.
:(
Need this for the forums, but not for the VBa page.

Forget it - sorted it myself. It was an <if> condition after all.
Anyone interested - from the install instructions:
Step 2) Adding the new headers
1. Select the header by double clicking on it.
2. Scroll to the very end of the template code.
3. Add the code $welcomeheaders
4. Save and close the template.
Change step 3 to:
Add the code <if condition="THIS_SCRIPT != 'adv_index'">$welcomeheaders</if>
And your CMPS will remain clear of the welcome headers should you rquire that.
Add it to your instructions if you like, I'm sure there'd be enough people interested in the option to disable in the CMPS.
Oops, almost forgot - *clicks install*

Does this post in any way affect google page indexing because it shows the welcome header on every page?
It sure does. What that impact may be is really up in the air and a matter of speculation. The vbSEO team recommends you place this hack in your navbar template rather than header template. Personally I disable bots from reaching my frontend pages so it's not an even an issue.

Ok,
I couldn't find the codes I need to delete in the FORUMHOME template of my Child Template (which I am using). So I edit the parent template. But then it only works when I use the parent template.
Did I miss something here? Shoudn't the child template inherit from whatever changes of the parent template?
Which template you guys changed? The parent or the child?
Confused. Thanks.

If you modify a child style it will no longer inherit changes from the parent, meaning you would have to modify it again.

The body tag controls your entire page, not an individual block of text. It looks like you could use a quick referesher on html syntax, I recommend you take a look at www.w3schools.com/html

We approve all new accounts and new members see the "Welcome new posters! This generates an occasional "You say to post but when I try to the system says I can't" emails - have you considered adding a separate welcome-header message for "users awaiting moderation"?

So if you use VBSEO, then you dont want to use the welcome headers? The way I read it (which could be way off...) you can use but put the $welcome headers in the navbar template instead of the header right? but it says this:
Note: vbSEO recommends that users apply this plugin to the navbar template rather than the header template. To do so, select the navbar template, scroll to the end of it and add the code $welcomeheaders there. Save the template and do not modify your header template.
so if you dont modify your header template.....does that mean to not take out the following and just put the $welcomeheaders at the bottom of the navbar template?:
<if condition="$show['guest']">
<!-- guest welcome message -->
<tr>
<td class="tcat" colspan="<if condition="$vboptions['showmoderatorcolumn']">6<else />5</if>"><phrase 1="$vboptions[bbtitle]">$vbphrase[welcome_to_the_x]</phrase></td>

Peformed the changes as you suggested, and it seems to work as you describe. One question though: How about the Enable One-View Welcome Headers feature?
How it's acting for me is:
1)If I go to my vBa page first, the Welcome Headers do not show up.(just as I expected):D
2)If I then jump to my forums (from my vBa page), the Welcome Headers still do not show up.:confused:
3)If I go straight to my forums page (bypassing vBa) the Welcome Headers do show up fine. Then when I change, or reload,the page the Welcome Headers go away.(as I expect them to):D
So, is this how it should act per the code? I'd prefer when I do step #2 above that the Welcome Headers would show up once, as I hit the forum page.(coming from my vBa page) Is that possible somehow? Thanxx.

I can say that vbSEO and welcome headers work perfectly together. Have a look at my site for proof:
http://www.daftmoo.org.uk/mooforum/
I find welcome headers to be a very useful tool.
Hmmm... My guest welcome_guest phrase includes a link with {2} as the target URL and it is resolving to: domain/forums/register.php?.
The question mark at the end causes the page to not resolve (ie. error 404). How can I fix that properly? (I changed the phrase to "hardcode" the proper URL)
Well, looks like I was wrong about the ? being the problem. Everything works fine when testing from the forum home page. Unfortunately, it does not include the /forum/ directory when testing from my CMPS home page on the domain root. I had to hard code the URLs in all the phrases.

Just as important, why can't vbseo handle a header addition?
vbSEO can handle the welcome headers just fine. The change is a an SEO recommendation (from the vbseo team) to help optimize your site, it is not to make the system work with vbseo, vbseo will work with it either way.

I'd like to kno whow to change the backgroud color too ? Body tag doesn't do anything :(
The body tag is used to change the attributes of your entire page, not a specific part of it. You need to modify the actual table cell the header message is in (<td ...>). If you are new to html and css please check www.w3schools.com

I am getting it hanging during install, are their any changes required to write permissions on the directories?
Nope.

So, is this how it should act per the code? I'd prefer when I do step #2 above that the Welcome Headers would show up once, as I hit the forum page.(coming from my vBa page) Is that possible somehow? Thanxx.
The show one time system will show the message on the first page you visit and no subsequent pages during that user session; if however you have disabled the headers from showing on certain pages, or do not have it setup to work with vba, they won't show at all. That's outside of the scope of this hack however.

I just down loaded this and was wondering if the install guide was not updated for vb3.6
the reason i ask is because the code that is listed in the guide to remove from the FORUMHOME template does not match what is actually in the v3.6 template.
the block to remove is easy to spot just different code. thought i would ask before i tear it up.
thanks

I have 3.6 and had a look at the begin and end lines and they were exactly the same as in the guide.
This is exactly the same, start from here:
<if condition="$show['guest']">
<!-- guest welcome message -->
<tr>
And remove everything there with the below things as last lines:
<!-- / guest welcome message -->
</if>
That matches exactly the 3.6 template. So just remove in 3.6 the complete "if" condition of the guest welcome message from <if> till </if>, that should do the trick and worked fine on my 3.6 gold forum.

Ive just un-installed this MOD temporary and reverted my forumhome template, but i am still seeing the welcome headers.
How do i completely remove this plugin?
Ted S
09-08-2006, 04:52 AM
Once you remove the plugin it will no longer show on any page. There is however a welcome message included in the default forumhome template that comes stock with vbulletin. You can remove this at your chosing but it is a part of the original forumhome template.

Well I am at a complete loss here. I had to remove this mod and reinstall. Since then everything is working great with the exception of the Guest Headers which I had turned off and then back on after the reinstall. By working great I mean that all of other features of this mod are working as expected. Also the mod was working before the reinstall and no other hacks were installed during this time.
What I've done so far: I have verified the existance of the welcome_guest phrase in phrase manager. I see this code in the welcome_headers template:
<!-- guest welcome message -->
<br />
<table class="tborder" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" border="0" width="100%" align="center">
<tr>
<td class="alt1">
<phrase 1="faq.php?$session[sessionurl]" 2="register.php?$session[sessionurl]" 3="$vboptions[bbtitle]" 4="sendmessage.php$session[sessionurl]">$vbphrase[welcome_guest]</phrase>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
<!-- / guest welcome message -->
My Header template contains the code $welcomeheaders at the bottom of the template. My FORUMHOME template does not contain the guest welcome message chunk of code. The varname is $vbphrase[welcome_guest] in the ACP. And yes, it is turned on.
I am by no means an experienced coder. So I'm sure I've missed something here. Any advice would be much appreciated because I really could use this hack. Thanks in advance!

Hi Ted,
This is a great mod!
If it is placed in the header template everything's aesthetically pleasing.
I've noticed, however, that if I place the $welcomemessage string at the very bottom of the navbar template as vbSEO recommends, the welcome message is placed quite a distance below the navbar and appears mashed up against the top of my shoutbox (another mod I have installed).
Is it possible to add the option to remove some of the space above the table and another option to add space below the table?
Also, I'd like the option to remove the border.
I've tested the mod and everything works as advertised and the instructions are very clear!

I can't help with the gap below the navbar (that may require some style-specifc tweaking) but I noticed the same missing gap below $welcomemessage and fixed it by simply adding a <br/> like so:
$welcomemessage

Go into your Admin Cp, then the options tab and select the welcome headers option (at the end of the list). Edit the phrases and links to suit your needs.

I'd like to make a feature request. It would be nice if the "Enable One-View Welcome Headers" option didn't affect guests or having it as an additional separate option for guests. The point is, I don't want to annoy my registered users with the welcome headers but I want the opposite for guests. :)

Okay, it seems I can do this by simply moving the if condition below the 'guest welcome message' part in the xml file. Problem is, now I think one view isn't enough. Users can quickly jump to their favorite forums without noticing the welcome header.
Is there any way to change "One-View" to configurable number of views? Or maybe some configurable timeout period?
Ted S
09-15-2006, 11:39 PM
At this time the cookies track if you have viewed a message or not, there is nothing to track how many times they have been viewed. However, this would not be very hard for anyone who wanted it to code in.

I have an issue with vBadvanced's CMPS & the Welcome Header MOD someone here can probably identify. Without the CMPS, all works GREAT! Meaning if I go to my forums as a GUEST, the messages show up perfectly.
But if an unregistered user goes thru the CMPS Homepage first, the Welcome Msg never shows up.:confused: Then, when they jump onto my forums (since I have show only once toggled on) they don't see the Welcome Msg there either.:angry: As this is now the 2nd page they've hit of my website.
Any idea as to why it doesn't show up on the CMPS homepage?
NOTE: Nevermind, I just found it. I needed to add the welcomeheaders code to the Portal Output Global Variables under vBadvanced's CMPS AdminCP menu. Now it works just fine!

Check these out:

I am interested though in someone helping me make an additional feature to the hack or plugin.
Notice on this site:
http://www.weddingstrategies.com
I have added a picture to the right. I think it dresses it up. When a person registers, I would like to have the message box that now disappears, to be replaced by and identical size box with same picture but different message. Perhaps I could use it for updates, etc.
Can this be done easily?
Remember, what you say is easy is usually over my novice head...

Just installed and is working fine on 3.6.1 - very nice features. All are working fine except the option to show a message to users who haven't posted in x days. I've got this configured to 30 days -- and have tested it by logging in with an account whose last post was longer than that (by quite a bit), and no message desplays (despite it being configured and customised, and enabled, in the AdminCP). All other messages (not registered, never yet posted, etc.) display properly -- it's just this one, which I really quite wish to use, that doesn't.
Any thoughts?

While I'm glad to support this hack, I can't support conflicts with other hacks simply because I don't know their code. From what I can tell, Dynamic Announcements does many of the things this system does but with a different backend -- I would recommend using one or the other and customizing as you see fit.

I installed this a week ago and noticed results almost immediately. A lot of new users are posting messages proclaiming to be long time lurkers, even had one person make their first post after being registered for over two years. I didn't expect to see results like this so soon, it's amazing what such a simple change to the welcome headers can do.

I had the same sort of problem. I found that because I had upgraded from an older version the upgrade hadn't overwritten the old welcome_headers template. If you open up the .xml file and copy the template from that into the template you already have it all starts to work as it should do :)
I hope that helps ...
