I have just upgraded from 3.5.5 to 3.6.2. Should I first uninstal the plugin or should I just overwrite it with with this version?

I believe your supposed to remove all plug-ins before upgrading.

i'm getting the following in my guest message:
Welcome to the [ARG:3 UNDEFINED] forums.
any idea how i can fix that? i tried reinstalling, but that didn't work.
anyone know anything about this?

ARG3 is normally something like $3 and should copy the name you filled in at you vbulletin forum admincp as your forum name.
Maybe that field is empty in your vbulletin config or contains invalid characters.
I have no problems with it.

Before I install this, I remember seeing another plugin that was a "quick register" hack, which have something similar to this hack, displayed above the forum, but it had the fields which you fill in to register right there and you could register straight away from that page isntead of going through the regular vb registration process.
Is there any way of implementing that into this?
Also, is it possible to display images in the welcome headers?

Ted,
Thanks for the mod. It's great.
EDIT: I had thought I had an error, but I figured it out.

I have installed this mod and its AWESOME but I have a small request ( I know its a preety stupid thing but I dont like to hack hacks without the creator knowing or doing it himself so...
Is ther a way to modify the welcome template so the font that appears in the welcome box message has a SMALLER font? about the size of the previous thread - next thread that apears in every vb page?
thanks for the super hack

^I am at the final part of the installation...at the "add new plugin" part to install the php...when it says "Hook Location
This specifies the location within the vBulletin code of the hook that will fire this plugin function."
Do I put in "forumhome_start"? Or do i leave it on the defaul ajax selection? Or..is it something totally different?! thanks

I was wondering how I could use conditionals to show a message to guests, unconfirmed users, members who have never posted and members who need to 'post more often'.
right now I have <if condition="in_array($bbuserinfo['usergroupid'], array(1, 3))">
user02934123123
10-24-2006, 08:20 AM
I note that I haven't got a response to my post earlier here, that the message for users who haven't posted in a given period of time, doesn't work. All other aspects of the mod seem to work well - this one simply doesn't seem to work at all.

Quick question...at the end of your template welcome_headers you have this code...what is it?
<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
jw00dy
10-24-2006, 09:43 PM
All that is is comments, saying it's the end of the code for google_ad_section.

Hallo!
I just imported the plugin and wanted to edit the global announcement text and i got the following error:
Database error in vBulletin 3.5.5:
Invalid SQL:
SELECT * FROM phrase
WHERE varname = 'welcome_gannounce' AND
phrasetypeid = global
ORDER BY languageid
LIMIT 1;
MySQL Error : Unknown column 'global' in 'where clause'
Error Number : 1054
Someone can help me with this? Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I don't know if it has been asked before but we have your vB3.5.4 version running and have translated all the text. I want to ask how we can upgrade this hack to your latest version.
Just upgrade to vB3.6.2 and then install this version over the older version? Will this work and will all the translated text stay intact?
Thank you!
@IngoPan, this is for vB3.6+ and not for 3.5.5!

For some reason the "never posted" message isn't showing up at all. My guest message shows up fine. I've confirmed that under my vbulletin options that the "never posted" option is on so I'm not sure why it's not working. Any help is really appreciated.
Thanks!

bump...
also I found out that when I turn the option on so that viewers see the welcome message more than once, the "never post" message works. However, when I set it so that viewers only see the welcome message once per visit, the "never post" message doesn't show up.

I am having the same issue. I have just installed this hack and it is not showing up at all? Not sure what I have done wrong, this is the first install of this particular hack. I am wondering if it is a conflict with my shout box? I don't know enough about it to fix it now?

There are a couple of spots on my site where the welcome box is directly on top of something else. How can I fix this?
Example: http://talesotaku.com/forums/showthread.php/welcome-tales-otaku-6.html
It is directly on top of the Locked image.

Great tool....I like it very much.
2 issues want to ask all the expert here:
1) How to reduce the space on top of the welcome header box? You can see my forum (http://forum.easywordpress.com) page to get the idea. The gap on top is very obvious, I just want to reduce it to one line space.
2) If I want to turn on the global annoucement, how do I put the setting to auto display the latest annoucement? Has anyone done this hack so that we dont need to post 2 times. :)
I will vote this for mod of the month.. definitely.
Thanks

Any way to integrate with this? (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=114342&highlight=quick+registration):)
I solved this pretty easily by disabling the welcome header for guests and basically putting more text in the quick register box that said what the guest header was saying. So now I have both integrated basically by disabling the Guest welcome header. I have all other welcome headers enabled for people who haven't posted yet and for people who haven't posted recently.
Example here: http://www.poker.ie/community/forums/

1) How to reduce the space on top of the welcome header box?
There is a <br /> tag in the welcome_headers template with each message, remove it.
2) If I want to turn on the global annoucement, how do I put the setting to auto display the latest annoucement?
That is not something you can do with this hack at this point.

Quick question...at the end of your template welcome_headers you have this code...what is it?
<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
That tag tells Google AdSense to ignore the welcome headers for spidering. Basically we don't want Google thinking the content in the welcome message is something to display ads. If you don't use adsense, it's just a one line comment that won't bother anything.

I have used welcome header old system and now I have upgraded with the new one , but since the upgrade its not displaying the welcome message. I have followed each and every step mentioned , but its not working.
I have vBulletin Version 3.6.2 can you pls help me
Note : I have put $welcomeheaders on my FORUMHOME template.
The variable may not work in that template. You need to place it in your navbar template.

Add a <br /> tag to the end of the welcome_headers messages that you need more space for.
When I add that to the end of the welcome_guest, it only puts a space in the welcome box at the bottom. I need the space on the outside of it. Also, when I put the <br /> tags under the $welcomeheaders in the navbar template, it adds the space, but when a user is logged in the extra space is still there.
Sorry, but I'm not sure what you meant before. Where exactly should I put the <br /> tags?
Ted S
11-06-2006, 02:35 AM
Put it where you want it. If you want space under the box, put it after the closing table tag.

In which template? I want an extra space under the box, but not when a user is logged in. If I do what I said above, when a user is logged in and the box isn't there, there is an extra space.
Ted S

There is only one template used by this plugin... welcome_headers. You can add <br /> tags to any of the welcome messages you like in that template, just look for the proper location.

Ted, it seems that the first thing Google reads up is the header and while having this installed. I was wondering if there is a way to disable this because I don't think its a good idea, you know what I'm saying?

I installed this this morning (vb 3.62) and everything went smooth, however it does not display the welcome message for unvalidated users awaiting moderation. I manually validate users on my board and do *not* use the auto validation by e-mail. Instead, the product is showing the message intended for validated users who have never posted.
I did customize the language in the validation welcome message.
Any ideas what might be causing this, or perhaps it is a bug?

Than you will need to intall the 3.5 series version of the hack. In 3.6 (which this version is written for), the link structure to modify a phrase is different.
Where is this version? I can only see the 3.6 version. Thanks - this is a nice mod.

if the message is there, Google will read it. The only alternative is to turn the message into an image and post that instead of readable text.

Not a bug, the script just isn't customized to work with every setting. Look at your usergroup manager and find out the ID of the pending group then add that ID to the welcome_headers template as appropriate.

You can take the code right out of the welcome_headers template. If you need more help on creating other vb edits of your own you should definitely check the coding forum here as there are some great individuals who can help.

I had this mod installed with vB 3.5 and all worked well. Great mod!
I've upgraded to vB 3.6.3 and installed the new one, which seems to also be working well besides one small problem (which I'm pretty convinced is me).
I want to change the welcome header from "Welcome 'username'" to "Welcome 'custom field 5'". Custome field 5 is the users first name in this case.
I have tried the following which I am sure worked before, but now don't seem to work.
$bbuserinfo['field5']
$bbuserinfo[field5]

You will need to add the variables to your welcome headers templates using the variables system. For example, <phrase 1="faq.php?$session[sessionurl]" 2="register.php?$session[sessionurl]" 3="$vboptions[bbtitle]" 4="sendmessage.php$session[sessionurl]"> has 4 variables with different values. If you added 5="$bbuserinfo['field5']" you could then call it from the phrase as {5}. Alternatively you can stop using phrases and write your messages directly into the templates using any variable you please.

Hi,
How can I have an image background like the version at vbseo.com?
vbSEO uses the main welcome headers as images, rather than text. They also have a slightly different version for their member groups. This can be accomplished by slightly modifying the template welcome_headers to add whatever html and css you need to create your layout.
See http://www.vbseo.com/f28/how-make-your-welcome-headers-image-7549/ for more information

No. If you're editing a template you can use variables directly, phrases tend to need you to call out the variables afaik.

Should I do this within the replacement variable manager or is there somewhere else I should?
Also what are the already defined variables, i.e. {1} {2} etc.?

I'm running a forum most of which is accessible only to paid subscribers. Of course, in order to subscribe users must first register but I'm seeing a good number of people registering without then subscribing (which doesn't gain them anything!). My question is whether this modification will allow me to put up a message only visible to registered members who are not paid subscribers.
I couldn't work out from the specs and the forum discussion whether this is possible.

Step Two: Making Users Confirm their Account
Many vBulletin sites require email confirmation prior to being able to post or access an account. However, activation emails are often misdirected to spam folders, ignored or simply deleted, leaving unconfirmed users with little access rights and no explanation as to what is wrong with their account. The unconfirmed welcome header is used to inform unconfirmed members of their account status and to direct them to automatically resend their activation email, or to contact the webmaster for support.
What does the "unconfirmed welcome header" look like?

I must be the only one who can't get this installed. After installing I can't see any welcome message and when I try to put everything back and uninstall I don't see the default welcome message either. I followed the direction to the "T". I have 4 skins plus the default style and decided to use the default style as a test since your instructions states I have to do this for every style.
I found the FORUMHOME only after I expanded the Forum Home Templates section of the default style, deleted the code as stated in the instructions and proceeded to edit the header template by adding the $welcomeheaders. After doing this and installing the vbwelcome_headers_3_6.xml I do not see the new welcome message. I do however see configuration options under vBulletin options, they are all set to display however I can't see anything at all. I've tried to put everything back and I now can't get the default welcome message.
I need some help making sure I've done this correctly. Should I do all my skins before installing and then reinsall or can I do this for 1 of the 5 skins I have that include the default style?
UPDATE: I GOT IT, I HAD TO LOGOUT AND THEN REFRESH TO SEE THE WELCOME MESSAGE...IM SLOW...
Try removing it from FORUMHOME and putting it in navbar that is where i have mine (looks better imo) and see if it works :)

Request:
1) Why not create an extra welcome header for coppa separate from unconfirmed user! (I did this manually)
2) Create optional welcome headers based on:
(a) different user groups (I have added several myself manually, but it would be nicer if it was streamlined),
(b) answering certain sets of questions in Edit Profile (some sort of automatic detect would be needed) produces a unique welcome header,
(c) separate headers for Infractions groups. But note that if a person goes into moderation or banned, they are not yet permanently banned so they are not actually physically moved into those groups (so you have to figure out how to take that into account, because presently I don't know how to identify them to give them a welcome message they are in Infractions).
I would be most excited by number #2, because look at the number of questions I have at registration, that I would like to create unique welcome headers for.

Parture - Welcome headers is meant as a framework to get you started, and thinking about how to personalize your forum messaging. As every forum is different, I encourage everyone to develop their own messages in a way that makes the most sense.
Parture
12-13-2006, 06:15 PM
Ted S,
Of course, but don't you think these enhancements would be nice?
1. create an extra welcome message for coppa to separate it from unconfirmed user.
2. create welcome headers for answering questions in Edit Profile, and for other user groups one might create, and for Infraction groups (temporary infractions don't put the person in that group, so they would have to be identified some other way).
If this is something you were not interested in programming further, can you tell us how we would do it? How do you create welcome headers if a person answers a question in Edit profile a certain way?
Ted S
12-13-2006, 07:23 PM
The system distributed is intended to work for as many sites as possible. Because every forum uses different profile settings the system does not address that portion of the profile. There are an endless number of factors which can influence what messages you show and again, this is meant as a framework and a starting place. Not an end-all solution.
You can add your own messages by editing the template welcome_headers and adding conditionals that fit your specific needs. If you need assistance with conditionals you can get help from the general coding area of vb.org.

Paul,
That is why I said in post #395, "some sort of automatic detect would be needed" for the fact that people use different profile settings.
It would be nice if you took this further, particularly for Edit Profile questions that can be automatically detected with if/else statements in programming, and those questions chosen for their responses to provide for different welcome messages in the control panel.
For example, if someon answered "No" to the Trinity in question 2, but "Yes" to question 1 on the Substition and Co-death, a welcome message could be produced since it is the first item on the list of questions that the person got wrong at registration, http://biblocality.com/forums
A welcome message showing the proof of the Trinity easily could be displayed with key Scriptures in the most concise fashion possible, rathe than just putting a link in the question itself at registration to that information.
I know that there is a way to do it, so it has the flexibility to meet 95+% of peoples' needs.
You could have one column of all the various Edit profile options on one side for a welcome message, and if at a minimum various options you select are answered in a specific way, then that welcome message is displayed. And make this welcome message IN ADDITION TO the basice welcome message that will be displayed.
I have wanted this for about 5 years now even before I owned vBulletin. I presently have it also so that Googlemaps HSE, you can't see the "Add Location" button unless you first join a particular user group that allows for that (as an Apostle or an Elder). But it would also be nice in addition to joining a public user group that the person also fulfill the condition of answering all 19 questions with a Yes for Elders and Yes all 37 questions for apostles, to be able to edit the map, as well as access to the particular kinds of map entries for different kinds of apostles and elders.
Do you see what I am trying to do?
Ted S
12-14-2006, 02:06 AM
Thank you for your feedback however I am not looking to create an end-all solution that contains so much code as to be a hindrance unto the system, nor am I a developer looking to make a major module. I do marketing and I saw a basic feature lacking from an otherwise robust product -- welcome headers is meant to solve that problem and let sites go from there. Out of the box welcome headers works, it's light weight, requires minimal install time, runs fast and is simple. Customizing it is ideal although not required. And that's exactly what I'm looking for it to be.
As someone who has been in the Internet Marketing and Community Development market for over a decade I am in complete agreement that things should be as personalized and as versatile as possible, but that's something I leave up to each forum to do as they see fit. If you want to delve into the code and create something that brings more participation to your community I encourage you to do so; that's how I got the idea in the first place.

Ted S,
The Enable One-View Welcome Headers does not work as you probably intended Ted. If someone registers after seeing the guest message, they don't see the subsequent welcome messages.
It would be preferrable that viewers see any single welcome message at least once while logged on as they go through the various stages of welcome messages after registering.
When you fix this, could you set it up so the message is seen 3 times for any single welcome message, then disappears for that session while browsing?

I created my guest message with about 30 lines of text. I want the bottom portion to be 2 columns, which of course requires 2 rows as well, only the 2nd row has 2 columns. What is the proper vbulletin compatible code for this?

Try removing it from FORUMHOME and putting it in navbar that is where i have mine (looks better imo) and see if it works :)
I'm trying to figure out what it would look like in the navbar.
Does this site: http://www.a0tu.com/bbs/ have it in the navbar? :confused:

hello, I love ur mod, but I've several questions for now... I'm doing a customization of your mod, as u recommend it. www.flunkme.com u can see here, I edited the way default message is shown and also added a an image that is supposed to explain what is website about and a banner. I added banner via welcome_header style, I would like to know if there is any difference between adding google ad through style or by editing phrase itself.
I also noticed following tags in the style header
<!-- google_ad_section_start(weight=ignore) -->
<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
what is it about? does it have any particular meaning, functionality? I don't get it :)
thanks for the great mod!

This tells the Google AdSense bot to not use the content in the welcome header for building it's ad index. Since many forums use Adsense this was requested heavily. If you don't use adsense this won't do anything negative to the page as it's simply a comment tag which you can leave or remove as you see fit.

Sure. You can add any messages you want following the format in the welcome_headers template. Just look at the other messages and add your own.

Great module. I have one problem. I am using this with vBadvanced and am having trouble with the "contact us" link on the home page of my site. If I click on the "contact us" link in the header from within the forums, link works fine. However, if I click on the "contact us" link on the home page, I get an "error 404: URL not found" message. I am sure this is an easy fix :) but I can't seem to wrap my arms around it.
Yikes - I just checked and the "register" link doesn't work from the home page either :(
I have the same problem. Anyone care to help? Thanks :)

Ted S,
The Enable One-View Welcome Headers does not work as you probably intended Ted.
Parture, did you still install the hack with this bug?

Thanks for this handy hack! Could you add a welcome header for members awaiting activation from the admin? As far as I can see, the header for members awaiting activation is only for the Email-Activation. Is that correct?
Ted S

The header will effect any member in the waiting activation groups.
If you want to customize this, you can add your own headers to the welcome_header template.

Hi - I'm new to vB, but think this is exactly what we need. We have downloaded and installed and can see all administration. I'm having trouble getting it to work (I think).
1. How or When should I see the Welcome Header? When you first go to our forum (free4gov.org), you see the standard welcome page. When you try to enter a forum that requires registration, you see the standard registration page (You are not logged in or you do not have permission to access this page...). Should I be seeing the welcome page here?
2. How / where do I define the arguments that are used by the varname? For example, I am getting the error:
Welcome to the [ARG:3 UNDEFINED] forums. when I view the default text. Also the "contact us" link uses variable {4} that is not correctly defined. Not sure where these get defined.
Thanks! SP

It looks like you didn't quite make it through the installation. You need to remove the default header (issue #2) and add the new ones (issue #1). Check the install.html file again and follow the second and third steps. If you run into issues, let me know.
Below is my original PM conversation with Ted. Following his recommendation, I have move the discussion to the board.

If you have no messages showing and the options do not show in your control panel then you have not installed the plugin or activated the plugin system in your vbulletin installation. Also, I would ask that you direct all future questions to the appropriate public thread so others can see the answer. Thank you

I followed the installation steps one after the other and even marked them off in pencil on my check sheet.
When you click on installed products from the plugin area, you can see that welcome header is among the installed product in addition with vbulletin but it does not show as a plugin.

That would indicate that the Welcome Headers product is not installed or you have not enabled the plugin system.

Ok, I really do not know what else to do or say. I enabled the plugin system because prior to step 3 which is "Add the attached plugin"
The product to the best of my knowledge is in the installed but is not running. My original header is gone and their is nothin in its place.
I followed all the steps one after the other being a newbie, I did not want to miss anything and I believe I did not.
I did a partial reinstall, I checked it again from begin and the ony thing I had to redo was re-upload the plugin after I uninstalled it. Now it works fine. Thanks Ted for all your help and a nice hack

That looks like the wrong file. Youl should be modifying the forumhome template unless your custom style has dramatically changed things around, in which case you will have to search out the default welcome header code.

How might we add, adsense to it and have a little line between the welcome message and the adsense?
Also, I put my code in the navbar, because I didn't want it to show up on the index of my site in the vbadvanced portal... because I only wanted it to show up in the center column. (then again, as I type this... I suppose I could make a custom module and put that code inside it....)
But it's fine to just put it in the navbar right?
Edit: I've tried to edit the welcome_headers template in the style to put the ad code in, but the ad code just sends up sitting above the welcome message. I'd like to have the ad on one side and the welcome message on the other. Any ideas?
Edit again: I am such a noob, I figured it out. Just added another td alt1 tag around the ad before the first td alt 1 tag.

I apologize if this has already been addressed, but I don't have time to read 33 pages. This is an excellent mod, and I'd really like to install it. However, I'm curious what this mod does with spiders. My forum is ranked pretty high on the google forums because of the google spiders. Will this mod ignore the google spiders and let them lurk as they normally do? Does this mod only target "guest" and ignore "google spider" or "yahoo slurp spider"?
Thanks :)

Too bad. It really doesn't take very long to read the entire thread. But to spoon feed you, I doubt it will affect Google content spiders. I have a pretty well ranked site and have had this hack in for quite a while. My traffic continues to grow each month so I don't see it affecting my site traffic coming from Google.
It does tell Google AdSense not to consider the text within when figuring out what ads to place.

This hack treats a guest as a guest regardless of what type of guest it may be.
Thousands of sites use this with few, if any, reports of problems with their SERP listings. That said, you can turn your messages into images (rather than text) as vbSEO's site does which will reduce any potential SEO impact.

<if condition="$forum[forumid]=22">
<!-- training forum announcement -->
<br />
<table class="tborder" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" border="0" width="100%" align="center">
<tr>
<td class="alt1">
<phrase 1="$bbuserinfo[username]" 2="$vboptions[bbtitle]" 3="sendmessage.php$session[sessionurl]">$vbphrase[welcome_trainingdisclaimer]</phrase>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
<br />
<!-- / training forum announcement -->
<else />
Thanks in advance.

Nevermind, I changed it from
if condition="$forum[forumid] == 22"
to
if condition="$forumid == 22"
And it started working.
