Hi guys,
My site (www.peterska2.co.uk) is totally dead so I need to move to a new host and try and repair what I can. I have a backup from about 2 weeks ago, which I will be wanting to restore along with some additional info from the semi-deleted database on the current server.
I have got a new host lined up, but it is a windows server instead of the linux one that I am used to (not that I ever did anything technical with it though). However, my domain is registered through my host and I cannot control the name servers while it is with them.
So, what I need to know is
Who is a good place to transfer my domain name to so that I can change the nameservers to the new host?
What is the best way to import the database (151MB)?
Anything else that I might need to know about windows servers.I'm wanting to get the wheels in motion sooner rather than later then I can get the domain transfer started so that I can have as little downtime as possible.
I've not had to do a server move or anything before so I'm a complete n00b to this.

1. Can you not just change the nameservers with your current registrar? You should be able to very easily.
2. SSH, or have your new host restore from the backup. If you get a vps (virtual private server) or dedicated server you can do this yourself as you will have shell access to sql.
3. Don't go Windows...go Linux server!!!!!!! seriously

I can't change the nameservers with my current registrar. I asked them about it and they flat down said no. It is because the registrar is also the host so it ties you into their hosting. I'm looking at godaddy. They seem to have what I need relating to name server access and cheap too.
Just to stress as I have had PM's and IM's about hosts: I do not require a host. I have got this sorted already.
I use between 1.5GB and 4GB BW a month, so I have gone with one that meets my requirements and gives me room to grow too.

Oops, sorry for messaging you info about a host Peterska2. I haven't had much experience with just nameservers so I can't be of help there.
Good luck though.

I just registered a new domain with them. I guess I didn't read their TOS. What did I miss?

GoDaddy is a proven company. They've been around for a while. Establishing a domain through them is a good move. We use them too. I was thinking about going to them for hosting purposes too. Maybe at some point down the road. :)

Thanks for the link. I'll look into them. :)
They seem to be like GoDaddy in the sense that they branch off to different companies for hosting solutions such as: http://www.peoplehost.com/
Err...No phone support/contact options?

Use https://www.namecheap.com for your domain. Godaddy is kind of lame. And the best way to reinstall the database is SSH.

Haha, I have never had a need for that. Email questions seem to be answered immediatly. I am sure they have a number.

Personally I like domainsite.com, I have purchased several domains with them, and there support is quite good as they do reply to you in time. :bunny:

It is looking increasingly like a total write off. The database backup is having problems restoring, and it's generally not going well.

Any reason you went with a windows host oppsed to a linux host.
Your problem maybe that windows host as MSSQL rather then MySQL and i beleive that would present problems importing one to the other

It has got mySQL 4 and mySQL 5 so thats ok. I'me restoring again via a different method and so far it seems to be going ok (apart from attachments)
I might go for the impex to a fresh install method though, as I have no idea what mods I had installed, especially as some of them I did myself so haven't got install clicks to guide me with them.

Good news, I got it all back up and running again, minus some of the hacks, and the style. Apart from that, the only thing I actually lost was about 2 weeks worth of posts (ie the ones since my backup). I didn't lose any members though as my user table was still mainly intact although rather messed up with my old host.
Just waiting for them to release my domain name then I can get the name servers changed, but for the meantime a redirect and a temp URL are doing the job.

I use powervps.com for my server, 1and1.com for the domain host.
Kerry-Anne, what are you looking to spend per month? You don't really want to run on Windows, do you? :(

I'm paying £40 for the year so really doubt I can get it cheaper than that. Plus it works fine for the size of my site. If I have massive growth then I'll look into something else, but as it stands, this is just fine.

Woo-Hoo!
My Domain has finally caught up with me after many hours spent yelling at the old host to get them to release it to 123-REG.
It's been a tough couple of weeks, but finally it is all nicely resolved

Agreed. Go daddy is pretty good for domain names but for hosting, steer well away.
may i suggest next time you look for hosting peter you might want to try Streamline.net since you have full control of domains bought from them and they offer very good hosting plans.
and good luck with your move!
