I installed the product, everything seems to be fine but I cannot find were I should change the administrator permissions. When I go to usergroup manager...edit administrators there are no options to set for abouttoday. I'm using vb3.6. Any ideas what I miss?

You might want to re-upload the files to your FTP, something might be missing. Normally you can change all permissions within the usergroup area.

In the standard calendar I can choose to post events that last a couple of days. Is it somehow possible to do this also for the abouttoday events? It would give me a great option to provide the users with some website news.

has anyone created a batch file for histroical events...I was hoping someone had done a more global batch file of events as currently i don't have any on there. Please someone do one as an addition for this hack!

also when you create a thread from an rss link is there a way to increase the maximum number of characters as I currently get a link to the story and half a sentance pertaining to the story.. can we increase this or change it so it either the link on its own and nothing else or a configurable limit of characters for the body of the message

ubblite
08-20-2006, 08:31 PM
@xfaethorx

Are you referring to the thread title posted or the actual contents in the RSS feed? If it's the RSS feed, you can't change that part as you have to go with what the provider has and in that case I'd select a different RSS feed which contains more text.

Sorry to bump, but no one knows about the preview article thing with it linking to "more" and actually displaying correctly instead of just cut off parts etc or odd behavior when you set a limit and show more then 1 article?

ubblite
08-26-2006, 12:13 AM
@Mysticales

Not sure what you mean but if I understand you correctly it depends on the feed as some display differently than others, which doesn't have anything to do with AboutToday. What is the XML to the feed you are referring to? Maybe you have a link to your site showing how it cuts part off as I'm not sure what you mean.

<a href="http://www.darkmystics.com/forums/abouttoday.php?do=rss&id=3" target="_blank">http://www.darkmystics.com/forums/ab...hp?do=rss&id=3</a>

I have a maximum of 1500 length set, 3 articles to show.

Now "Sometimes" it formats ok, sometimes it may give me a good partial article for the 1st and 2nd one, but the 3rd one may be all crumpled, then if you also look at the "links" that are shown, sometimes the url is messed up on things.

Basically lets say this... like the RSS Bot we all know about that makes posts, that one takes a arcticle, posts part of it, and sets rest to the "more" which clicks back to the source article.

Basically... looking for it to parse the articles better, say maybe give "x" chars per article then cut it off and link to the source. Vs one global length modifier.

This way I could do 5, 10 articles shown, whatever, and it would only show a preview of the article then link them to the full story.

Hey I am having a issue, just went to fully put this in for my users and well... ForumHome and the main RSS feeds are not showing anymore. I could delete them and they get removed, but if I add a new feed, it does not show up in the home page of abouttoday.php

I DID check the SQL DB, it is putting the feed info there just fine from adminCP.

My "Guess" it has something to do with the SEO url rewrite, which is a htaccess file and so on.

Any suggestions what I can do to get feeds showing again?

Hello Everyone,

Well I gotta say that this is a pretty cool addition, however I am finding the spacing at the top a bit of an issue (see attachment).

Does anyone know how to delete atleast a line of spacing at the top. Possible just deleting a <br> or something like that?

Any help would be appreciated.

That might be from your navbar template.

But yea.. would be nice to get my feeds showing again. >.< Had uninstalled and reuploaded it all again.. so not sure where the fix could be.

Ok I think I found out.. seems our other site staff did something with the RSS feeds again.. making them useless it looks... Have to get on them about it.

Which left one issue tho... seems when I did "Force Update" now, it redirects it to a bad url does a /./abouttoday.php

Which that part I can fix if I rename all the ./abouttoday.php in the file to remove the ./

But not sure if it was set that way for a reason or not.. not to mention still wondering if SEO and abouttoday conflict some still.

Hello,

No my navbar is great everywhere else. I don't think it is that. Are you talking about the histtd_navbar in abouttoday templates?

I looked through every Abouttoday template and could not find the spacing fix.

Good luck with your project.

Is there anyone else that may know how to fix the spacing problem?

The "Maximum Length" property is, I'm afraid, fairly stupid. Right now, it just yanks the first x characters from the feed. This can mean that tags are cut in the middle, etc. I think that's why your formatting looks so bad. I may need to re-look how I do that. Maybe strip all the tags first, then add the "more" at the beginning of the feed. I think that would solve the problems you're are seeing.

Well, it is simple! I really need to get in here and clean up my code some. For now, to fix this until I can release a full update, do this:

In abouttoday.php

FIND (around line 1748):
$dmain .= "<br /><br /><table width=\"".$stylevar['tablewidth']."\">
<tr align=\"center\">
<td class=\"thead\" width=\"100%\">".$dl->titlerss."</td></tr></table>";

REPLACE with (remove the breaks):
$dmain .= "<table width=\"".$stylevar['tablewidth']."\">
<tr align=\"center\">
<td class=\"thead\" width=\"100%\">".$dl->titlerss."</td></tr></table>";

I should have all this in templates and will in the next version.

I suspect you are victim to what is hitting a lot of others - CNN is screwing with its feeds!

For example, "Top Stories" (http://rss.cnn.com/rss/cnn_topstories.rss) works correctly, outputing the XML. Here's a little pic of how the page looks. That's what one would expect.
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/

But, "Space" (http://rss.cnn.com/rss/cnn_space.rss) is messed up, linking to Feedburner instead of outputing the XML.

Here's how the "Space" page looks:

I've sent CNN an email asking about this. I'll post any response I get.

Thank You,

Nuguru :)When you load the AboutToday.php page, it does check to see if any of the feeds need updated. If you site isn't very busy, ie the feeds aren't getting updated very often via the vb scheduled tasks, then loading the page could be slow as the feeds update. Otherwise, it should load fairly fast.

Thanks for the login info. You are up and running!

I made the following changes to your settings:

Under AboutToday -> Settings, I changed "Display RSS Feeds in "Today's Events"?" to YES. This makes a summary of the feeds appear at the bottom of forumhome. EDIT: I set this back to "NO" after I re-read your message and saw you don't want those to display.
Under AboutToday -> RSS Feeds, I modified the two feeds you have by changing "Display this Feed in "Today's Events"?" to YES. This tells the feed to appear in the summary RSS feeds at the bottom of forumhome.
Under AboutToday -> RSS Feeds, I modified the two feeds you have by changing "Include this Feed in $myfeeds variable?" to YES. This tells the feed to be read for your vba page.
Under AboutToday -> RSS Feeds, I modified the two feeds you have changing "Direct Link to Feed?" to NO. This way, when someone clicks on the link in vba or at the bottom of forumhome, they are taken to the abouttoday page instead of leaving your site and going directly to the story on another site. You may want it the way it was but I wanted to be sure you understood what that does.

Hi there,

at first: great plugin!

I got one question: Is it possible to show all feed postings in $myfeeds without dividing them into an additional <td>?

Example:
- rss1feed item
- rss2feed item
- rss1feed item
- rss3feed item

All in one table and one table column sorted by date. If it's possible, what part of the code do I have to change to prevent the forming of an additional column?

Thanks a lot!

Awesome hack, just what I was looking for to clean up my RSS feeds.

I have a couple of questions. How can I move the column that lists the RSS feeds to the right of the feed display? I already have a left hand column and it looks weird with 2 lefthand columns and then the main content.

Also, is there a way to make the RSS feeds show by default rather than the events section?

Thanks! You'd have to modify the templates. I plan to really make some changes next week. I'll see if I can make that an option.
Also, is there a way to make the RSS feeds show by default rather than the events section?
If you aren't using the local events, set "Disable Local Events?" to Yes in AboutToday -> Settings. NOTE - "can view disabled AboutToday" over-rides this! So, if you are an admin with "Can View Disabled" permissions, you will still see the local events!!

Also, is there a setting to expand the window for the RSS feeds summary? I was able to change the template but it looked as though there was a setting, but I couldn't find it.

When you load the AboutToday.php page, it does check to see if any of the feeds need updated. If you site isn't very busy, ie the feeds aren't getting updated very often via the vb scheduled tasks, then loading the page could be slow as the feeds update. Otherwise, it should load fairly fast.

What is considered updating often? My page is loading slowly. and I have about 20 feeds. I have the feed check every 60 minutes. Any other ways to speed this up?

Total noob question probably, but what do the $myfeeds variables do?The $myfeeds variables let you place summary information from your RSS feeds on ANY page and ANY place you want if that page is vb powered (ie global.php is called). Here is a good example of what you can do: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1007391&postcount=215

The RSS feeds are updated by the vb scheduler. Also, when the AboutToday page is loaded, a check is run. The question is really how busy is your forum. The scheduled task will only run if folks are visiting your site. If not, then the feeds are probably being updated when abouttoday.php is called. There's not much of a way to speed that up. Instead, you may need to increase the update time until the site has more hits.

If instead, your site does have a lot of traffic ... check each feed to make sure the url is still valid. A bad url could slow down the update process.

Change the 180 to a higher number to make the window wider. (Yes, I need to get that number more easily configured!)

Please follow what I've already recommended. 1) Set your feed refreshes much higher. For a site that small, I'd go to at least 120 minutes. 2) Check each feed to make sure that each url is still valid.

Once you do that, if abouttoday.php still loads slowly, send me an vb admin login and password (via PM) and I'll check it out.

Oh, I thought you meant increase the frequency. I'll give this a try. Thanks for your quick support!
Be sure to check the validity of each feed too! Also, you may want to stagger the frequency. For example, if you have an news source that is updated often, set that to 60 minutes. If you have another site that is updated only daily, set that to a higher number, like 360 or so minutes.

In my next release, I'll probably only have feeds updated via scheduled tasks so that user's don't notice any delay in these kinds of situations.

Your solution helped, but I still see it going slow sometime and faster at others. I'll tinker around with the settings a bit more.

A scheduled task would be awesome. Thanks for this great hack!

I installed you RSS feed mod & everything works beutifully, Im VERY pleased with your work. I ran into one problem tho & was wondering if you could help me with it. Basically, everything works great until I try to create a thread from the feed itself to open a discussion in the forums. I end up getting this error:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: verify_bs_opponent() in /home/virtual/site1/fst/var/www/html/streetz/includes/visionscripts/psionic_bsh/threadfpdata_presave.phpon line 3

when I go to line 3 of that php file it reads:

$bsh_status = verify_bs_opponent($this->registry->GPC['bsh_opponent']);

I contacted VisionScripts about the error & they asked me to contact the coder of the hack first so thats what Im doing. Thanks alot for any info.

I really should have called that "columns" across. If you set it to two and you have two feeds assigned to $myfeeds, you'd get this:

If you had it set to 1, you'd get:

I don't know what the product is but apparently they've had you change a vbulletin file. The create threads feature in abouttoday uses the datamanager. For it to fail, it sounds like you've modified (or the VisionScript program) has modified a file used to create threads.

I'm afraid the error clearly belongs to them, as it is being caused by a call to one of their functions (verify_bs_opponent). What you need to find out is what file contains the function that is being called, then I can help you with placing an include for that file.

Hey cyber, I contacted vision scripts & this is what the response was:

Ok. Please tell him to place the following code before initializing the datamanager:

if (file_exists(DIR . './includes/visionscripts/psionic_bsh/newthread_start.php'))
{
require(DIR . './includes/visionscripts/psionic_bsh/newthread_start.php');
}

That file contains the needed function, and it's not going to obstruct the functionality of his hack while allowing for the functionality of the battle hack.

Can you please let me know any info to get it working correctly. Thanks.

Okay, in abouttoday.php, look for this around line 100:

require_once(DIR . '/includes/functions_newpost.php'); /* included to build editor for description */
require_once(DIR . '/includes/functions.php'); /* included to strip bbcode */

Add the visionscript code BELOW that.

In ./includes/cron/cron_abouttoday.php, look for this around line 24:

require_once('./includes/class_abouttoday.php');
require_once('./includes/functions_wysiwyg.php');

Add the visionscript code BELOW that.

We could place it more exactly so it's not always called but this will ensure the job gets done (I hope!)

For CodeRed and others! Here is an example page that shows how one could use the $myfeedsdetail variable to create a custom news page.

In the admincp -> AboutToday -> Settings, set "Allow $myfeedsdetail to display?" to "Yes".

Now, under AboutToday -> RSS Feeds, edit the feed you are interested in displaying, setting "Include this Feed in $myfeedsdetail variable?" to "Yes".

Place the attached testme.php file in your forums directory. Done!

(CodeRed - in your situation, I turned off "Use RSS image?" for the feed you wanted. I think it looks better that way. You may want to try that too)

This may have been answered before but is their a way to get it to display on the right side of the forums instead of the bottom?

Here is a detailed example I did for showing the feeds under the navbar. You would use the same logic expect you'd want the myfeeds variable set to 1 (so the items are listed in a single column) and then place $myfeeds in your right hand column.

**********************************************

I'm going to make some of the feed summaries show on one forum under the navbar. I think that would be a good example to help everyone realize some of what they can do with this mod.

The end result is going to be this. I've selected two feeds to show at the top of the Main Forum using the $myfeeds variable:

http://brentandmary.net/images/abouttoday/forumwith-rss.gif

On other forums, we'd won't see the feeds:

http://brentandmary.net/images/abouttoday/forumwithout-rss.gif

Here are the steps:

In admincp->abouttoday->settings, change the "How many rows across for $myfeeds variable?" to two.

http://brentandmary.net/images/abouttoday/myfeeds-rows.gif

For the two RSS Feeds you want to display, in admincp->abouttoday->RSS Feeds, set "Include this Feed in $myfeeds variable?" to "Yes"

http://brentandmary.net/images/abouttoday/myfeeds.gif

The final step is to place the $myfeeds variable in the navbar template. We'll place it all the way at the bottom of the template with a conditional to only appear on the main forum (id of 2)

http://brentandmary.net/images/abouttoday/navbar.gif

Done!

ALSO - if you don't want the feeds at the bottom set admicn -> AboutToday -> Settings, "Display RSS Feeds in "Today's Events"?" to "No".

Fantastic hack, excellent work! Works like a charm.

I have one question. When it actually creates the thread based off of the RSS feeds I'm wondering if I can get the RSS Feed Name to show on that thread?

In some instances i combine sources into a forum for automatic news posting and it would be helpful if i could put the source (Rss feed name) on the thread itself by the link to the whole article.

Thanks again if you can help me w/ how to do this

Hey guys,

I seem to have a problem with the automatic retrieval of RSS feeds, I need to do it manually with Force RSS feed updates. Even if I run the cron file directly it doesn't update.

I am running Vbulletin 3.5.4,
does anyone have any ideas? I must add that the rest of my cron's are running perfectly.

Regards,
Titan

When you run the cron file directly (via scheduled tasks in the admincp) what does the log file show?

Hey guys,
I'm trying to get this up and running on my 3.5.1. I'm following the instructions to the T, I upload the files to the FTP, but right after i upload the xml file in Product manager, it "crashes" my site - noone can log in or out, and part of the database (all of my calendar events and users) become unretriavable. I closed the Admin CP and couldn't log back in, my site was pretty much hosed. I found a way to disable all custom plugins/products through editting config.php so I was able to log back in and uninstall abouttoday, which brought my site back up.

Anyone had a similar experience? Is there something I'm doing wrong? Any ideas?

This product sounds like an awesome mod and I'd really love to use it, and from what I'm reading in this thread it hasn't caused anyone such instabillity.

I hope it's just something trivial I'm overlooking during the installation and someone here can point it out to me.

Thanks!!

That's odd. The product file hasn't been changed in many months (sorry about that!) so it's very stable. I'd try downloading the zip file of the product again then re-uploading the files to your server. Make sure you upload the files in text mode. If you want to PM me a vb admin user name and password along with ftp info for your site, I'll check it out for you.

Yes, Just go to Admincp -> AboutToday -> RSS Feeds

Then scroll down to EDIT a Feed, Pick the sports feed and hit ok. Then scroll down and where there is a ZERO, you'll need to put the forum number that is related to SPORTS.

If you're not sure, go to your Forum and hover your pointer over the thread, the number is at the end of the URL.

When i got to the homepage... abouttoday.php it's black and I can't see the readings or the links. But at the bottom of my forums it's the right color. Some one wanna point me into the right direction for changing the background? I'm searching the php file now.

EDIT: Scratch that for some reason it's the right color now.

Now my problem is i've tried to put $myfeeds in certain forumids and it's not working :(

Just a quick question..

Is there a way to get the images to show up properly in a feed when it creates a thread for it?

All it gives me in the link, to the image, which does work. IF i edit the link, then the pic shows up fine then.

Anyhow, just wondering if their was a fix, or if its just the way the feed is.

The feeds that appear under "Today's Events" are not controlled via the myfeeds variables. (I plan to update that so that you can control the layout there better.) Yes, it is. If you have 3.6.x and your goal is to merely have threads created off of RSS feeds, you don't really need this product.

If you want to maintain your own "Today in History/Sports/Jokes/etc" database this is your hack. Also, if you want a page that summarizes all the current feeds without adding threads this is your hack. Or, if you want to be able to display selected feeds on any page on your site, this is your hack!

Thanks:) . Once quick problem. Whenever I create a thread for a certain feed, what'sdisplayed is the link to the story and under the link "URL=". What is this URL= thing about? When the feed is created into a thread, any html img tags are converted into bbcode IMG tags. I find that the feed image tags tend to contain dynamic url's. Unless you have set vbulletin to allow dynamic img tags (admincp -> vbulletin options -> Message Posting and Editing Options -> Allow Dynamic URL for IMG Tags), vbulletin will convert the dymanic bbcode IMG tags to bbcode URL tags. The bad thing is ... that converion from an <img> tag to the bbcode url tag doesn't seem to work well sometimes creating the broken URL tags. Try turning on "Allow Dynamic URL for IMG Tags" and see if that helps.

Also, I'm pretty new to RSS feeds. So, does an RSS feed infringe copyrights; or do I have to ask the owner of the site I want a feed from to acquire it?As far as I know, you don't need to contact the feeding site. I do think you should leave a link to the actual article in the feed. vb3.6.x includes thread creation off of feeds so I feel the vb folks would have checked this out before adding the feature.

Here is an example - From the rss feed; http://rss.slashdot.org/Slashdot/slashdot
Everything You Know About Disks Is Wrong

modapi writes "Google's wasn't the best storage paper at FAST '07. Another, more provocative paper looking at real-world results from 100,000 disk drives got the 'Best Paper' award. Bianca Schroeder, of CMU's Parallel Data Lab, submitted Disk failures in the real world: What does an MTTF of 1,000,000 hours mean to you? The paper crushes a number of (what we now know to be) myths about disks such as vendor MTBF validity, 'consumer' vs. 'enterprise' drive reliability (spoiler: no difference), and RAID 5 assumptions. StorageMojo has a good summary of the paper's key points."

What is posted in my forums is:

I would suggest you re-upload all the AboutToday files then from the admincp, import the product file product-abouttoday.xml (Manage Products - Add/Import Product). When you import the product-abouttoday.xml file, be sure "Allow Overwrite" is set to Yes.

Great Mod!:)

I have around 20 different RSS feeds and have it set where a thread is created when a person chooses to talk about that feed.

When I want to create a thread for the feed a majority of the time I get a message saying "Redirecting" rather than "Your thread has been created!"

Once I "Force RSS Update" it will then create the thread, but only after I force the update.

Is there a way to fix this agonizing problem, to where whenever I create the thread, it will be created and I won't have to "Force RSS Update" every time?

Note: I didn't have this problem when I had around 7-12 feeds.

Some questions:

1 - Where is the template defined for displaying the feed content on the abouttoday.php page? I would like to move the [Start/Join Discussion] button to the bottom of the cell.
figured it out - see below

2 - On the Home page "Upcoming Events", is it possible to display the feed headlines in multiple columns? Two or maybe three cols would be nice. Most headlines are short and punchy and they don't need all that room.

3 - Is there a way for an admin to skip over some items in a feed, like a news article that's off-topic?

4 - What is the necessity of "Force Feeds Update"? Can't that be a query in admincp on a feed-by-feed basis?

5 - I would like to move the admincp menu for "About Today" next to the RSS Feeds menu item. Got a quick way to do that?

6 - Abouttoday page seems to default to "List View" and I prefer "Summary View". Can there be a way to force this in AT's admincp?

Some minor Suggestions:

1 - Preview Feed button (like vB's RSS Manager has)

2 - Replace the Edit Feed and Delete Feed blocks with a Feed list and Add/Edit/Delete buttons

3 - Optionally allow title-less feed items to be skipped.

4 - When editing an existing RSS Feed, the button at the bottom of the form ought to say "Save Feed" not "Edit Feed".

5 - In the Admincp > About Today > Settings > Reason Section is Disabled, "maintenance" is spelled wrong.

6 - The "Get Feed Now" button doesn't really "get" the feed. I'm guessing it just displays what is in the cache. Rename it "Display Articles". OR you could add real "Get Feed Now" functionality to that button.

Some Major Suggestions

1 - When clicking a [Start a Discussion] button (to start a new thread), it would be nice to optionally allow the user to specify the forum where he wants the new thread started. It could be a simple form with a forum drop down list AND a small edit area where he can append his (optional) remarks below the feed content.

2 - And while I'm dreaming, I would like to be able to have 2 of these apps on my site. One for news feeds and one for opinion feeds. Short of tweaking all the base files to avoid variable overlaps and database conflicts, it would be nice if this could do it automatically.
OR
3 - Short of multiple instances of AT, implementing your Category concept for rss feeds could achieve nearly the same result. But I'd like to be able to display each category of feeds separately on forumhome.

Feedburner Problems

Have a couple RSS2 feeds that abouttoday doesn't seem to want to parse. The vB RSS Manager does parse them properly. (I was using a bot before to post threads in my forums from these feeds). Any suggestions or fixes?

Update: I'm guessing the issue is Feedburner as I see others here are having a problem too. Both IE and vB RSS Mgr handle them just fine.

I tried experimenting with the available feedburner links and for one feed I was able to find a working alternative feedburner feed address that worked. For the other, no luck. The problem feed (which is only offered in feedburner format):
http://feeds.feedburner.com/wdtprs/ZDys (G-rated)

One useful tip: you can submit a blog url to feedburner and it will scan the code for other feed types and give you their url. That helped me in another case.

Of course, the best solution is for abouttoday to parse fb feeds regardless of the format. :D
You outclass VB on handling the other feeds.

General Feeds Problem:

I have seen a couple situations where the article display on abouttoday gets messed up.
(See attached graphic)

Since the articles can contain upper chars and other content oddities, I assume that is what is causing this...but that's just a guess. :confused:

First article is fine.
Second displays above the table (missing table tags; it's just sitting in an unformatted part of the table).
<br />He cites St. Thomas Aquinas to defend abortion.</li></ul></td></tr>

Let?s Stand with Cardinal Mahony<br />If Fabian had an ounce of honesty, he would have left the Church long before he lent support to murder of the unborn. If he were a man, he would cast away his apparent fidelity to Christ before he set his hand to betraying </li></ul></td></tr></table></td></tr></table>
Article "#3" and beyond are not in the html.

This is another case where vB handles the feed without a problem.

Any ideas??

About half way done reading the comments in here. <<phew>>

Congratulations on such a great add-on and the wonderful support. :up:

I see most of my concerns have been mentioned before, so just count my comments as checkmarks on the "ideas" list. ;)

RE: the broken article displays, at least one of them is due to the double quotes issue. I will try your fix (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1188563&postcount=688).

I have another that breaks on this line: "Amigos de los Ni?os"

The ? causes the rest of the article and the rest of the feed to disappear. :eek:

I can send you more info if you need it.

RE: the broken article displays, at least one of them is due to the double quotes issue. I will try your fix (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1188563&postcount=688).I guess the problem I am seeing is a variation that hasn't been addressed yet. The article/feed is broken when I'm looking at a particular feed in abouttoday.php.

Removed "html_entity_decode" but that didn't have any visible affect on the article display.
Went the extra mile and did:
1 - deleted feed with double quotes.
2 - forced update
3 - updated abouttoday.php with your fix
4 - added same feed (with double quotes)
5 - forced update

Display in abouttoday.php Summary View was the same, i.e., the article terminated at the first double quote.

And just to be clear, these uni-sex ;) double quotes (") are okay and these directional quotes (“ and ”) are not.
Not sure what characters these (“ and ”) are, perhaps Unicode 201C and 201D?

I also have some weirdness like Let?€™s displayed in the articles.
It is in the feed as Let’s (a right single quote?) and vB RSS Mgr displays it as Let’s (also a right single quote?).

Any suggestions or pointers?

This is the last hurdle before I can release this for use on our forums.
A multi-byte(?) character in one article can screwup not only AT's handling of the article, but AT's handling of its feed (and on occasion, a neighboring feed as well).

I didn't like the "Talk About It" button at the end of headline because different headline lengths made the button's position look random.

I wanted to move the "Talk About It" button to the bottom-right of the article cell in abouttoday.php. That way, when displaying multiple articles from a feed, all the buttons would line up neatly.

The Talk ABout It button is defined in template histtd_talkit_bit and called in abouttoday.php via $talkitlink at about line 1975.

First remove $talkitlink from its present position next to the title:

OLD:
$dmainx .= "<tr valign=\"top\"><td class=\"alt1\" valign=\"top\" align=\"left\" width=\"100%\"><ul><li><a href=\"" . $rss_channel["ITEMS"][$i]["LINK"] . "\" target=\"_blank\">" .$rss_channel["ITEMS"][$i]["TITLE"]. "</a>".$talkitlink;
NEW:
$dmainx .= "<tr valign=\"top\"><td class=\"alt1\" valign=\"top\" align=\"left\" width=\"100%\"><ul><li><a href=\"" . $rss_channel["ITEMS"][$i]["LINK"] . "\" target=\"_blank\">" .$rss_channel["ITEMS"][$i]["TITLE"]. "</a>";

And move it to a new position at about line 1682

OLD:
$dmainx .= "<br />".iif($maxlengthevent>0,substr($rss_channel["ITEMS"][$i]["DESCRIPTION"],0,$maxlengthevent)." ...[<a href=\"" . $rss_channel["ITEMS"][$i]["LINK"] . "\" target=\"_blank\">more</a>]",$rss_channel["ITEMS"][$i]["DESCRIPTION"]) . "</li></ul></td></tr>";

NEW:
$dmainx .= "<br />".iif($maxlengthevent>0,substr($rss_channel["ITEMS"][$i]["DESCRIPTION"],0,$maxlengthevent)." ...[<a href=\"" . $rss_channel["ITEMS"][$i]["LINK"] . "\" target=\"_blank\">more</a>]",$rss_channel["ITEMS"][$i]["DESCRIPTION"]) . "</li></ul><div align=\"RIGHT\">$talkitlink</div></td></tr>";

where RIGHT can be LEFT or CENTER also.

In the final, I also took out the ul and li tags, but that's just my preference. :cool:

The result is much cleaner looking to my eye.

Thanks for the detailed comments. I really need to recode a lot of this. As you can see, it's been a long time since I did an update. Now, just to find some time!

Thoughts?At what point do you see that error? If it's for a specific feed, what's the feed? If on install, I'd suggest you re-download the zip file, extract it, and re-upload all the files to your server and re-import the product.

If I may be so bold, I would suggest that the next priority/release should be:

1 - Handle feeds well
This includes "odd" double byte characters in feeds (e.g., “, ”, ?).

This is so critical, I'd ask that this be done before anything else is touched. Make this change and AT becomes instantly useable.

One of your feeds is providing invalid data. Take the url of each feed and pull it up in your browser. The bad feed should become evident. You can also disable a feed in turn, force an RSS Update as you disable each one, until the error stops.

I think I understand what you want. Try changing the value of "Number of RSS SUMMARY events to display?" in admincp -> RSS Feeds for the feed in question. You many need to do a "Force RSS Update" to see the result.

I changed the name of the "Product Title" to "NewsRoom", so why does it still say "abouttoday"? Is there a way to make the Last Activity say "NewsRoom" instead?

Yes, in the admincp -> Plugin Manager. Edit the AboutToday plugins online_location_unknown and online_location_process to get the wording you want.

When I use this as a vBa column 200px wide, the text does not wrap and there is empty space on the left-nor will it interact with custom css
Any way to get the text to wrap?
Or to control the CSS in order to modify font color?

The problem is in how the style sheet is apply the padding to the list that the feeds are in.

Here's a fix for now. In the file abouttoday.php, around line 1564 AND 1568

FIND:
$dtodayx = "<ul class='smallfont' ul class='smallfont'>

REPLACE WITH:
$dtodayx = "<ul class='smallfont' ul class='smallfont' style=\"margin-left:-20px\">

Do the same thing in the file includes/cron/cron_abouttoday.php on lines 273 AND 277. You may need to adjust the value of margin-left to get the optimum look for your board. You may be able to modify it so your custom CSS is used too. Let me know how it goes!

Note that once you make this change, you'll need to do a manual refresh (Force RSS Update from abouttoday.php) of the feeds to see the result.

not sure what happened but this stopped working on our site, sort of. It still shows up but the RSS feeds no longer update. Everything stopped updating on April 19th. We updated from 3.5.x to 3.6.5 around April 15th and I was updating templates for a week or two later.

I checked the RSS addies and all seem to be fine. I deleted one of the feeds and tried to add it back but things aren't showing up like before.

Sorry for the spotty descriptions. Any ideas?

I think I figured out what you need to do. One of your feeds (for example) is http://rss.crash.net/crash_18.xml. If you enter that url, it brings up http://rss1.mediafed.com/feed/crash/BRITISH_SUPERBIKES. If you enter THAT url (in the abouttoday rss setup) as the url for your feed, it works!

I've fixed the three feeds you had. All is well!

I had this working fine before, but in the last several weeks its started getting 406 errors when I click on the "Talk About It" link. I don't believe I've changed anything.

This error (HTTP 406 Not Acceptable) means that Internet Explorer was able to receive information from the website you visited, but the information was not in a format that Internet Explorer can display.

And then on one of the feeds, I get a different error when clicking the Talk About It link.
