I have 4 questions:

The display of the RSS feeds on forumhome begin immediately after the calendar events, with no line spacing between the last calendar event and the title of the first RSS feed. Can you tell me where I'd edit to place a line break between the two? I was hoping that this would help make the fact that these are RSS feed links set off and stand out more.

For the CNN feed I am not seeing the buttons to create a topic from each of the feeds. I am using Fox and Yahoo feeds in addition to CNN and the buttons for those feeds are displaying properly. Any ideas as to why this is or have I missed something here?

I saw this mentioned here once already: The font size on forumhome does not match the font size for the calendar events, it is larger. Is there a way to reduce it?

And last: Is there any way to eliminate some of the line spacing between RSS feeds as displayed on forumhome? Sort of tighten it up and have it use less display space? For instance, take this:

For the CNN feed I am not seeing the buttons to create a topic from each of the feeds. I am using Fox and Yahoo feeds in addition to CNN and the buttons for those feeds are displaying properly. Any ideas as to why this is or have I missed something here?
Let me get the easy one first then I'll get the rest later today. For the "Talk About It" button to appear:

AdminCP->AboutToday->RssFeeds

In the Add feeds area, third option from the bottom you will see a box where you can put a forum number in. Set that to the forum you want each feed to be posted in. That will cause the buttons to appear so members can post them.

Duh! OK, dumb question, I could've sworn I checked that. :rolleyes:

BTW: the feed is functioning perfectly with vB Advanced, just a couple of minor setting changes needed in vBA and a couple of radio butons to click in AboutToday's panel and it was a piece of cake after following the steps for the add-on template setup.

Two of the feeds are giving errors for an invalid character. http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/rss/nonstandard_rss.xml and http://www.superchevy.com/rss/nonstandard_rss.xml have problems. In the attached pic, see the funny looking question mark?

That's blowing up the program. I'm going to work on a better way to handle this error over the weekend. I need to have it skip that feed and send the admin an email about the problem instead of having the whole program die. For now, if you delete those feeds, you'll be back in business until I can improve the error handling.

Great mod! Just couple of things though, i have set to auto create new threads, which it did, but those threads only show up for me in the top x stats mod and the latest threads mod. They don't appear as a new thread on the forumhome or actually in the forum itself! And the userid that posts the RSS threads hstill has a 0 post count. Am i missing something here?

Also, if i have about today disabled on forumhome, how can i force the rss to update...or does it happen automagicly? :) Using latest stable version of vB 3.5.4 and vbseo. TIA

Ok, this is an awesome idea. I installed it and followed the instructions. I have everything setup as you suggested and changed the usergrp permissions for admin so i can see it.

At the bottom of my page i can now see, under upcomming events for the next 5 days, i renamed it to "In the news"

There are no RSS feeds listed. So i click on the "in the new" and end up with the options section where i can manage, force add etc. I double click on the yahoo RSS feed and nothing happens. I force the feed and nothing happens.

What is going on?

When the scheduled task "Hourly Cleanup #1" runs, a hook into that from AboutToday updates any feeds that have not been updated within the time specified by the individual feed. So, although you can set a feed to update more often than once an hour, it will really update no more than once an hour. If you really want it to run more often than that, I can tell you what to do.

The deleting of old news articles with 0 replies would be cool. I have one user account that pulls only RSS feeds so if it's easier to delete old threads that the user creates that would work too. Another option would be to delete news articles once the links no longer work.

that means one of the feeds is not working properly anymore. Go through each feed, making a small change for that feed like changing the number of items to display from 4 to 5. When you save the changes to the problem feed, you'll get the error in the admincp. Then delete the feed and try doing a force update.

Do you mean to have it display somewhere on a page besides abouttoday.php? If yes, you could do this with some conditional logic. See my post prior to this one and just warp the $myfeeddetails in template logic to test for the style. I don't have an example handy but I'll post one when I get time.

The image links are already converted into [IMG] tags. However ... see the earlier discussion reprinted below.

When the feed is created into a thread, any html img tags are converted into bbcode IMG tags. I find that the feed image tags tend to contain dynamic url's. Unless you have set vbulletin to allow dynamic img tags (admincp -> vbulletin options -> Message Posting and Editing Options -> Allow Dynamic URL for IMG Tags), vbulletin will convert the dymanic bbcode IMG tags to bbcode URL tags.

Correct. Vb states "This can prevent malicious use of the [IMG] tag." I'm not sure how malicious such use could be but I do set it to "Yes" on my boards.

Yes, I actually have that ready but I want to include a few more enhancements before the next release. If you want to add it manually, make the following changes to abouttoday.php

FIND (on or about line 1239)

The feeds are automatically updated whenever the scheduled task "Hourly Cleanup 1" is run. On a busy board that will run once an hour. However, if you are trying the product on a test board, the updates may be much less frequent, depending on how much activity you are generating on the test board. That's because even though the scheduled task is suppose to run once an hour, it will first wait for any scheduled tasks before it to run before it runs (items like birthday emails, daily summaries, etc). Each hit to your site will run one tasks that is ready to be run.

So on a test board where you are the only person accessing the site, if you go to bed, get up in the morning, and pull up your forum, the feeds will not be updated. In fact, you'll probably need to hit the board 5 or 6 times until "Hourly Cleanup 1" gets it's turn to run.

Now, if you are on a very busy board ... that's a different story! Let me know which one it is and we'll proceed from there.

Built in support to use either fopen OR cURL for fetching RSS Feeds. This has been modified to automatically check for cURL and use it if available, otherwise use fopen.
Cleaned up formating in "Today's Events" section so that the font size is the same as events pulled from the calendar.
Moved the automatic update of RSS Feeds from a hook into "Hourly Cleanup #1" to it's own scheduled task called "AboutToday". This is set to run every 15 minutes by default.
Modified how poorly formatted feeds are handled so that one bad feed won't cause the feeds to error out.
Post count will be incremented when threads are started via AboutToday.

You don't have the version 2.0.3 files loaded on your server. I'm positive abouttoday.php is version 2.0.2. If you go to this url http://www.friendskorner.com/forum/abouttoday.php?do=rss, you get an error about field 'desc'. That's a field in 2.0.2 that no longer exists in 2.0.3.

Is there a setting that I need to check to make it increment posts? I just did a forced RSS update and it hasnt updated the post count (there was at least 1 thread post). I'm also assuming that previous threads wont count towards the post count?

Theres an option to update user postcounts from the maintenance section on the forum.
Make sure you make note of the warning on there!

Even with the RSS feeder not having an incremented post count, the posts were still adding to the sites overall postcount. Just not the users post count.

Is there no way at all to extract that magic post count number? Grrr :(

If that's the case, you should be able to just set the forum's settings to "no" for "Count Posts Made in this Forum Towards User Post Counts".

What about setting a variable (would it have to be in the database?)

Called $rssposts or something, and in the same way that the users postcount is incremented for each post to increment the $rssposts variable also?

To account for the threads already posted I can just give the variable the current number to start with?

Sounds like you need to uninstall then do a reinstall making sure you use the ver 2.0.3 files.

After you did the ver 2.0.3 install, do you see a scheduled task titled "About Today"? That's the main item to check for. It's not really a question of having too many; it's a question of how busy your board is. Like a said, if it's a test board or a board with little activity, you will need to simulate higher activity to really get the scheduled tasks to run on time.

Right, I asked for a bit of help on a forum about incrementing a number in the database each time the RSS posts, and this is the help I got back -

To create the table - (I'm using 'forum_' as for my tables)

then this in the code for the postcounts -

If you want to fiddle with this more, you may want to look at the threads table instead. When you install AboutToday, a field called histtd_threadid is added to the thread table. When a thread is created by AboutToday (either by a user manually or by the auto creation process), that field is populated. If you counted the number of rows where that field has a value, it would give you the number of posts done via the AboutToday program. Something like:

$abouttodayposts = $db->num_rows($db->query_read("SELECT histtd_threadid FROM `" . TABLE_PREFIX . "thread` WHERE histtd_threadid NOT LIKE """));

NOTE: if you uninstall and reinstall AboutToday, that field is dropped then readded so any threads created before the reinstall would no longer have that field populated.

I upgraded to ver 2.03 and my feeds are still not auto updating. They do update when I do it manually. I remember reading in the 25 pages someplace that a site with low traffic will not auto update for some reason. Can you re-post the fix or tell me what I can do to get the auto update to work.

BUT ... the scheduled tasks are run sequentially each time a vb page is loaded. So, if your board goes for 2 hours with no hits, no scheduled tasks will run.

For the next release, I may include a file that can be set to run from unix cron ... but I haven't decided if it's really worth the trouble or not.

Yes, my site does not currently get a lot of activity. So it doesn't update as expected. I did test the cron job and it does work it also works when done manually. Is there no easy way to schedule an update for those of us with low activity sites?

Okay, here is a product file for you to test. It adds a plugin that will hide the posts auto-created by the AboutToday userid when the "New Posts" or "Today's Posts" searches are used. Download and unzip the file, then import the product.

Once that is done, go into admincp->About Today->Settings. Look for the option pictured below and set it to 'Yes'. Let me know how it goes!

oh ... that code is hardcoded buried deep, deep, deep down. If you really want to take a crack at it, change the template 'histtd_talkit_bit'. You will have to also make the changes in cron_abouttoday.php. (Search for histtd_talkit_bit in that file)

and then where ever it was looking for TITLE in cron I changed title to varname.

and it installed and it's running. I have no idea if everything will blow up now :( I'll test it and post results hehe

Google allows you to add a feed for any keyword, keywords, phrases, etc. Plus it pulls the news from all kinds of sources including the ones I listed above. All the URL's are the same except for the keywords you want to pull from so you could easily add multiple feeds without even getting the URL from google. Just edit the URL yourself.

This feed pulls news for "California" related subjects.

I was doing the same thing with Google - customizing each feed manually and then I'd import the RSS into AboutToday. The only thing I don't like about Google feeds is that each story contains more links to the same story, which take up too much space. Really cool app but I am having a little trouble getting items posted. I no doubt have something set wrong somewhere.

I removed that block of code
and then where ever it was looking for TITLE in cron I changed title to varname.

and it installed and it's running. I have no idea if everything will blow up now :( I'll test it and post results hehe

This is a really nice tool.

Two suggestions I'd have are-

1) ability to annotate before posting a feed item. That way you could add comments.

2) ability to select the forum when creating a thread. An item from Yahoo Entertainment for example could go in any number of forums on an entertainment based site.

I never seen anything like that from this product. I'd recommend uninstalling it and deleting the files. If all is well, load the files again from a fresh download of the product and try importing again.

Include this Feed in $myfeeds variable? Each feed I have added yes to.

Yet they still appear in today events forum home as one column.

Also how do I get "todays events" box to appear on top of "currently active users" Its to far down on the page at the moment would like it further up.

Sorry for these beginner questions, but everyone was a beginner at one point.

Seems like there should have been something from ~10:30pm to 6am, though..Remember, since the updates are via the vbulletin scheduled tasks, they only run if you have activity on the board. So, if you are using a test board or a board with low activity, the feeds may not update as often as you think they will. I'm looking at creating a file you can run from cron but don't have it ready yet.

Yet they still appear in today events forum home as one column. The $myfeeds variables will not change how the feeds show on forum home. That's not there purpose. There purpose is to allow you to create a variable (that contains the feed information) that you can then place anywhere on your site.

If you get that error when you add a feed in admincp, that means there is a problem with the feed. You should delete it and readd it. If you still get that error, there is something wrong with the feed. You can post the feed url here if you want me to look at it.

When the feeds are set to zero, that means they think they've never been updated so they will update immediately.

Sometimes the feeds themselves will contain an invalid (poor xml) entry. When that site updates it's feed, the problem often goes away. So ... just wait and see for now.

1 is the correct setting for the number of feeds. That will give you a column of feeds. The problem is in how the style sheet is apply the padding to the list that the feeds are in.

Here's a fix for now. In the file abouttoday.php, around line 1564 AND 1568

FIND:
$dtodayx = "<ul class='smallfont' ul class='smallfont'>

REPLACE WITH:
$dtodayx = "<ul class='smallfont' ul class='smallfont' style=\"margin-left:-20px\">

Do the same thing in the file includes/cron/cron_abouttoday.php on lines 273 AND 277. You may need to adjust the value of margin-left to get the optimum look for your board.

I'm using ArticleBot to bring RSS feeds as new threads/posts to my forum area. From those posts, the first few words appear on the right hand column under "PC101 Tech News (http://www.pc101.com/)" BUT, I'm not liking how it's the same information repeated! So....

Does the AboutToday hack allow me to put an RSS feed into the forum area about topics "A,B and C" and then put RSS feeds to the right column about topics "X, Y and Z". Obviously, I'm wanting to make what's in the forum different from what's in the column.

maybe you can look at it to do integrationI installed the "Rules And User Agreement" on my board and everything still works fine. I do only have one test rule so maybe it's something with one of your rules. The only thing I can think of you to try at this point it to record the rules you have, delete or disable them, and see what happens. Then add each rule back until it breaks.

because of some of us work with utf-8 and we take the RSS content from site that work with windows-1255 (for example)
so we get a gibberish content from themI can try to look into this more but to be honest I have very little experience with checking or manipulating the character type.

I'm using ArticleBot to bring RSS feeds as new threads/posts to my forum area. From those posts, the first few words appear on the right hand column under "PC101 Tech News (http://www.pc101.com/)" BUT, I'm not liking how it's the same information repeated! So....

I don't think it can really do what you want. But here's what it can do. You can have the items from RSS Feed A listed in the right column. Then you can have the items from RSS Feed B create threads in a specificed forum. However, you cannot have RSS Feed A list items in the right column that are different from the items that RSS Feed A would post in a forum as a new thread.

My site allows guests to post replies to registered users threads. My only problem is that guests can use the Talk about it button to create threads and I want to prevent this. I only want registered users to be able to create threads from RSS data.

Any help on how to solve this?

The "Talk About It" button follows the permissions that are set for that usergroup for the forum in question. If you have the forum permissions for that usergroup in that forum set to "No" for "Can Post Threads", then guests should not be able to create a new thread using the "Talk About It" button.

It's almost never going to be the complete story. CNN in particular is bad about having feeds with the title, a link to the story, and a description that is just "Read full story for latest details", which sucks!

There isn't really an easy way to do that right now. If you review this post: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1036505&postcount=433, it contains info on the unordered list that the feed summaries are contained in. You could tinker with that (adding font commands to the style element) to see if you get what you want.

I installed this and the RSS feeds show up when I'm logged in as admin but they don't show up when I log in as a normal user. Any idea how to fix this? I'm on 2.0.4 and VB 3.5.4

Did you change usergroup permissions?

Couple more ideas to help you here (cause you really do need to fix this our your won't be able to change any usergroup permissions)

1. Check you includes/xml folder for any xml files associated with the "Profile Comments" system. Remove any if you find them then rebuild your bitfields.

2. Trick the system! Add the field vbspacecomments back into the usergroup table. (ALTER TABLE usergroup ADD vbspacecomments INT( 10 ) UNSIGNED DEFAULT '0' NOT NULL)

[This isn't an issue caused by AboutToday. I don't want first time readers to be confused and think it is or was.]

Is it possible, with some template changes, to get multiple feed results on one page? Example. Currently you click on feed1 and you get feed1 results, then you click on feed2 and you get feed2 results.

Is it possible to have a page with feed1 in one table and feed2 in another and so on?

Question, I wanna use this on my forums to show our sites news. However, I only want it to display 3 summary items. (Which thats no problem)

HOWEVER, I only want it to display like a partial news of the article. Like if I have it set to show 3 news articles that were posted, I only want the summery of each article to only show maybe 200 chars. (Kinda like the Maximum length thing)

However.. if I do that... it doesnt seem to work fully.... It seems to apply the maximum length thing to all 3 articles as if it was part of one limit.

I want it where I can show the latest 3 article news posted. Then a short summary of whats included in each article, then it would cut the "full" news out and say [More] which would link it to the full article.

Right now, if I set the Maximum length it seems to give me the [More] and cut off the article, however.. its applying it wrong it seems.. as the 1 article shows fine, but 2nd one would be even less.. and 3rd one would have nothing to show as a preview of the news at all.

If im making sense, is there a idea for this? I just want to show a preview of the news article posted, have the 3 latest articles shown a summary of. Then it would just in that summary preview link to the main full article, can this be done?

Make sure you have class_abouttoday.php and cron_abouttoday.php loaded in the folders where they should be.
