Ok so I have this installed and working perfectly but my only question is this now... When I go to my Google Sitemaps page it asks me to Add a Sitemap for my site... I'm assuming I need a URL or something to give it to my site map? What is the URL?

lindmar ,
make sure that you have set 0777 permissions to data/ folder.
Yellow Slider ,
although files are physically stored in vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder, you can still access them via your forums root using rewrite rules in .htaccess (as described in installation instructions)
pumpiniron ,
sitemap URL to submit to Google is:
http://yourforumsroot/sitemap_index.xml.gz

iojam,
Thanks for the link, I submitted it to google. What is the link to the Yahoo sitemap that I have to manually submit each time?

When making a scheduled task, is it necessary to include the day of month, hour and minute? Is so, what is suggested? Also, what should be placed in the log-phrase box?

I get the same as Linmar.
First time the script ran, it was fine. Second time, all seems OK except the execution time doubled and the cpanel cron email report had 11 Mb of:

To answer my own problem - all the files in /data need to be 666, and for some reason my ftp program would only change half of them (an error to do with the file having an incorrect designator). Deleted and re-uploaded /data and chmod to 666 fixed it.

Installed script, and I saw index files being created, also downloaded by Google. Found google webmaster page and signed and looked at my stats. website was last crawled 7 days ago. I also manually uploaded my site index file, which was downloaded by google few minutes ;)
(I also added .htaccess pages for all my directories)
my forums/directories are created like this www.mysite.com/portal/forums/
So I have 1 .htaccess file under each of the folder roots
www.mysite.com and www.mysite.com/portal and www.mysite.com/portal/forums and each .htaccess file has its own redirect, so it will work under each folder.
When will Google actually crawl my new pages? or did I do something wrong?
In my understanding when index file is being downloaded it does not mean pages have been crawled...correct?
So what is the appx time google will crawl pages after being installed this mod? (And does this mod require google webmaster account)

piniron,
Yahoo sitemap is located at http://yourforumsroot/urllist.txt.gz
Snake,
it seem to wokr fine now :)
Trana,
you can manually submit your sitemap to Yahoo once and check if yahoo downloads it.
saab340 ,
you can find more details on Google sitemaps here: https://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/docs/en/protocol.html

Google says that I have ERRORS in my site map.
I rebuilt my map by going into my scheduled tasks. The site map seems to stop and IE says the page is done, but there is only 13 files created, there used to be many more.
Google suggested it was an error on file 13 which is exactly where the sitemap rebuild hangs/stops.
I have unisnstalled the modification, redownloaded it and re-uploaded it to no change, it still throws up:

I am lost. Ever sinds I moved servers the site map does no longer work. ( did a 3.6.2 upgrade right after the move BTW.
The site maps get generated. That seems to work fine. I can see them in the data directory. It's just that I can't get Yahoo or google to the sitemaps.
My forum is located in www.mydomain.com/forum/
The sitemaps can not be downloaded from www.mydomain.com/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz or www.mydomain.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz
How do I solve this?

alfaowner,
you should increase max_execution_time php option to be able to generate full sitemap in case if it stops during execution.
Alfa1,
make sure that you have rewrite rules setup in .htaccess file as described in installation instructions.
cykelmyggen,
you can manually submit google sitemap at http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/siteoverview

I've probably skimmed by the answer a million times but I can not see it. I realize it is not necessary to submit to mysites on google webmaster tools but I am sort of fanatical about it. No matter what file I place for the sitemap, it shows an error. I am using a subforum. myvbulletin.mysite.com
What should I do?

Try running the scheduled task manually (adminCP --> Scheduled Tasks --> Scheduled Task Manager --> Click on Run Now for the VBSEO Task)
...when I do it it completes the sitemap generation, but throws a seemingly infinite number of gzwrite() errors. Are you getting those?
ConqSoft
10-30-2006, 06:53 PM
That could be related to file/directory permissions. Check those.
Also, execute it from the vBSEO Sitemap menu instead of directly on the scheduled task. Executing the scheduled task directly while you are logged into AdminCP will run it with Admin permissions, and include any hidden forums you may have.

hello all
I have a question which i hope can be answered
i don't mean to create any controversies regarding the 2 SEO creators
I'm using the Zoints SEO mod.
The question is:
Will VBseo sitemap generator work well with Zoints SEO mod?
I mean:
With the Zoints SEO mod that re-writes the urls,
Will VBSeo Sitemaps generator, generate the sitemaps with the urls re-written by Zoints SEO?
and has anyone tried it yet?
Thanks!

If you are having trouble, but really want to get a sitemap for google and yahoo, use this program here. (here.) It is totally free, and it knock's out the url's that can't be reached......it is a very useful program, but if you have a large site, it take's a few hour's to get the sitemap built....

Thats not a good idea if you have any content above your /forum directory (i.e. in the root). Google will not index your site properly. I had the exact same issue and lost a ton of rank for 2 months until I changed the sitemap on Google to point to the root directory.

Works great, but I have one small Question.
1.I can Manually upload the site maps from home or forums but the date folder I can not with it chk mod 777.
2. Also should I submit to Google and yahoo the zip files or decompress them.
3. I assume it over writes the existing site maps so there is always a updated one.
With Google and yahoo it will look in the same place for the site map........Yes
It is creating the site maps in the data folder, but having page error or 401 error when Google or yahoo try to find it.
as I sad I have it che mod 777 and can upload them from Google and yahoo.
Sorry as I can not find were this Question was answered as there are 76 pages and I made it to 50 before posting here.............

if you enable vbseo_sm_vba.php module, it will include all vBa pages automatically.
dholt,
1. there is no need to move sitemap files from data/ folder, you should use mod_rewrite rules as described in installation instructions for this.
2. .gz compressed sitemaps are supported, you should not uncompress them.
3. sitemaps are automatically updated if you created scheduled task in vB admincp as described.

please install the latest version of Sitemap Generator (this code has been updated).

caliman,
SE bots logging only works on boards with vBSEO installed, make sure that it is enabled in your vbseocp.
Just checked, it's set to yes, yet I haven't had anything logged since July. :surprised:

Couple of things I noticed. This does run well on a 3.6.4 board. Great mod by the way. However, the documentation is a little lacking.
Therefore, I'll post what I found to be a pain for me to search for:
When you setup your CRON via the control panel, you must set the new cron job option "Log Entries" otherwise it will not log in the admincp at all.
When you have run a successful creation and are going to submit it to Google, you must have a site setup for http://www.your-domain.com/forum/.
When you submit your sitemap for spidering you must tell google that it is located at http://www.your-domain.com/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz (your mod_rewrite needs to be working properly and in the /forum/ directory .htaccess file properly to work.
For those of us who are using vBAdvanced CMPS you MUST make one very big change after activating the vbseo_sm_vba.php addon in the admincp Options panel: Find the following code in your /forum/vbseo_sitemap/addon/vbseo_sm_vba.php file: $vba_url = $vbseo_vars['bburl'] . '/'; Replace that with the following: $vba_url = ''; otherwise your root links will look like this: http://www.your-domain.com/forum/http://www.your-domain.com/index.php?s=blah and as we all know that will give you a big old hairy 404.
While I say that this is a wonderful modification that does work on 3.6.4, the documentation should be updated and the code on the vba module fixed to avoid any further issues with people giving up in frustration on getting this thing to work. This information took me well over 6 hours to wade through to find the fixes. I would have preferred to not have had to waste my time like that if at all possible. Thus, I post this in the hopes that someone else does not waste theirs needlessly.
Just my 2pennies. Take it with a grain of salt.
I do have one question though. How does Google know via the auto-notification that it is *my* sitemap that it is being notified about since there is no place for me to add a link or other information to send it to? Just curious is all...

You are actually supposed to create the sitemap for the topmost level.. ie, root, rather than /forums/. The .htaccess does the magic part, and google sees the files as being in root, rather than /forums/vbseo_sitemap/data/.
Google then knows that is the sitemap to update, as it comes from that domain. (To the best of my knowledge). :)

Kall,
Cloudrunner's way is the only way I have got this to work, and is the way the .htaccess is written to work. Google doesn't seem to mind either.

After reading 60 of the 90+ pages here I gave up! Can someone help me with the file created for Yahoo? I was able to get the file for Google and see it at
http://biker-talk.com/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz
so I know that the .htaccess is set correctly. However I can see the file created for Yahoo. I've tried looking for both /forum/sitemap.txt.gz and also up a level. I can however see it under /forum/vbseo_sitemap/data/ via FTP.
Anyone know why I can't see/access the file for Yahoo under the forum directory, while I can access the file used for Google?
BTW, I'm running vB 3.6.4 and not running any of the other vBseo or any other addon product.

Alright folks, here it is. The definative [HOWTO] on getting this to work with vBeulltin 3.6.4 with vBAdvanced CMPS installed and the root directory instead of /forum/. This is step by step from modification to installation to notifying Google and Yahoo. I hope this helps some folks out.
Ignore the installation instructions given in the archive as it will not work for you very well if you are running vBAdvanced CMPS!
In your /vbseo_sitemap/ directory edit the file "index.php".
Find the following code: define('VBSEO_SMDIR', dirname(__FILE__));Add below it the following code and modify it to your server's forum location: define('DIR', '/home/yourwebsite/public_html/forum'); Then find the following code: chdir('../');Replace it with this: chdir(DIR);
Save and close "index.php".
In your /vbseo_sitemap/ directory edit the file "vbseo_sitemap.php".
Find the following code: define('DIR', dirname(__FILE__).'/../'); Replace it with the following code and modify it to your server's forum location: define('DIR', '/home/yourwebsite/public_html/forum'); Then find the following code: chdir(dirname(__FILE__).'/../'); and replace it with this: chdir(DIR);
Save and close "vbseo_sitemap.php".
In your /vbseo_sitemap/ directory edit the file "vbseo_sitemap_functions.php".
Find the following code around line 466: 'url'=>$vbseo_vars['bburl'] . '/' .$sm_filename, and replace it with this: 'url'=>$vboptions['homeurl'] . '/' .$sm_filename, making sure to have the 'homeurl' defined in your vBulletin Admincp->Options->Sitename / URL / Contact details->Homepage URL as your root directory, ie.: http://www.your-site.com
Save and close "vbseo_sitemap_functions.php".
In your /vbseo_sitemap/addons/ directory edit the file "vbseo_sm_vba.php":
Find the following code: $vba_url = $vbseo_vars['bburl'].'/'; Replace that with the following: $vba_url = '';.
Save and close "vbseo_sm_vba.php".
Upload your .htaccess file to your webroot directory.
/home/yoursite/public_html/.htaccess
Upload the now modified vbseo_sitemap directory to your webroot directory.
/home/yoursite/public_html/vbseo_sitemap/
CHMOD your /vbseo_sitemap/data/ directory to 777.
Import the product xml that came with this modification by going to AdminCP->Plugins & Products->Manage Products->[Add/Import Product].
Go to your AdminCP->Options page and select vBSEO Google/Yahoo Sitemap Generator and fill out the options according to the instructions for the modification.
Make sure to put vbseo_sm_vba.php in the Addons Generator Modules section or your vBAdvanced pages will not be included in the sitemap.
Save your Options.
Create a new vB Cron Job by going to AdminCP->Scheduled Tasks->Add New Scheduled Task and input the following settings (See Attachment 1):
Varname: sitemaps
Title: vBSEO - Create Google/Yahoo Sitemap
Description: Creates a sitemap for google sitemaps.
Log Phrase: vBSEO - Create Google/Yahoo Sitemap
Day of the Week: *
Day of the Month: *

Filename: ../vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_sitemap.php
Product: vBSEO :: Sitemap Generator
vBulletin Default: No
Run this new scheduled task for the first time. There should not be any errors listed.
Once your scheduled task has run successfully it is now time to submit your sitemap(s) to Google.
Login to https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/siteoverview
Create a new site listing for your web-root (http://www.your-site.com) if you have not done so already and get it verified.
Click the link "Manage *yoursite*"
Click "Sitemaps"
Click "Add a Sitemap"
Select "Add General Web Sitemap"
In the resulting input box put the path to your new sitemap xml index document.
http://www.yoursite.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz
You MUST use this address otherwise it will not work right.
Click "Add Web Sitemap"
In a few minutes (It may take as long as an hour to get the spider to your site and have google check your files) Google will spider the file and then check and parse it. Check back to https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/siteoverview to make sure no errors occured in the parsing of the files. I am still waiting to make sure that the yahoo portion of this is working. When it comes back good I'll post specifics on it as well.
Again, These are the steps I took to get it working with my 3.6.4 and vBAdvanced CMPS. I'm certain there are other methods, but this seemed the easiest for me, and if it helps to alleviate issues for only one more person then I am happy.

I installed this product on 3.6.4 with no problems whatsoever,
I have installed vbulletin in /forum folder and I'm also running vbadvanced in the root,
to get this to work properly there's only one change that had to be done in the .htaccess file. You need to add these lines to your .htaccess file in your public_html root not your forum root,
public_html/.htaccess file should have these two lines:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(sitemap.*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ forum/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
if you have installed your vbulletin in any other folder just replace that with "forum" in the line above.
If you have installed your vbulletin forum in your public_html root then you don't need any modifications to be made. the included .htaccess file will work just fine.
when you go to google to add your site you need to add the domain and not the domain + forum folder, so yours will look like this:
http://www.yourdomain.com
again do not add the "/forum" to the end of this address.
Now you wanna add your site map enter this line but replace "yourdomain.com" with your own address:
http://www.yourdomain.com/sitemap_1.xml.gz
when google searches for that file in that address your .htaccess file will redirect its request to the appropriate location which is
http://www.yourdomain.com/forum/vbseo_sitemap/sitemap_1.xml.gz
I hope this helps clear out some of the confusion out there and maybe the writers can add this bit to their description on the first post if it's valid.
also would help to mention that this works for 3.6.x as well,
Thank you for sharing this wonderful mod.

http://www.yourdomain.com/forum/vbseo_sitemap/sitemap_1.xml.gz
Just a clarification the filename *should* be sitemap_index.xml.gz
The reason is that if you set your URL amount to split at say 20,000 links (default option) then you will have up to three files, sitemap_1.xml.gz, sitemap_2.xml.gz and sitemap_3.xml.gz if you have more than 20,000 URLs in your sitemap up to a total of the 50,000 URLs allowed by Google.
The sitemap_index.xml.gz tells google where to find the rest of the files after the split has occured. As well, even if you only have one file, it will still point google to the correct file location.

12-19-2006, 12:50 AM
Is this true?
Yes, but only if you put vbseo_sitemap folder off of your /forum/ directory.
i.e. /forum/vbseo_sitemap/
if you use Cloudrunner's setup then no, it does not need that change.
The remaining part is incorrect as Cloudrunner pointed out. It should point to sitemap_index.xml.gz. You will experience no problems with sitemap_1.xml.gz, as long as you set you do not have multiple files to upload.
On a different note - this unfortunatelly does not work for Y! as when the Y! tries to grap
http://www.yoursite.com/vbseo_sitemap/data/sitemap.txt.gz
It gets redirected to
http://www.yoursite.com/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1
Of course, if you rename the file sitemap.txt.gz (to say yahoo.txt.gz) and move it to root (or at least out of the vbseo_sitemap folder), than submit that file - Y! will happily accept it.
I think...
Finally, there is a problem with using vBAdvanced pages.
That is, when following Cloudrunner's notes, regular vBA pages are submitted without the root URL
For example:
<url>
<loc>index.php?pg=bmr_calc</loc>
<priority>1</priority>
<lastmod>2006-12-17T19:32:05+00:00</lastmod>
<changefreq>daily</changefreq>
</url>
As you can see the root is missing. Everywhere else it is proper.

Yes, but only if you put vbseo_sitemap folder off of your /forum/ directory.
i.e. /forum/vbseo_sitemap/
That's how the original author has instructed you to install this hack.
putting the vbseo_sitemap forum inside your vbroot which in my case is /forum
The remaining part is incorrect as Cloudrunner pointed out. It should point to sitemap_index.xml.gz. You will experience no problems with sitemap_1.xml.gz, as long as you set you do not have multiple files to upload.
Yes only thing that needs to be changed is the name of the file as cloudrunner has mentioned. however if you have anything less than the number of maximum links set in the option then you will only have one file and the above will work just fine. works for my forum as it's new and has around 15000 links in the sitemap.
On a different note - this unfortunatelly does not work for Y! as when the Y! tries to grap
http://www.yoursite.com/vbseo_sitemap/data/sitemap.txt.gz

Of course, if you rename the file sitemap.txt.gz (to say yahoo.txt.gz) and move it to root (or at least out of the vbseo_sitemap folder), than submit that file - Y! will happily accept it.
I disagree, it's working flawlessly for me and Y! has no problem getting the file.
if you have set ur .htaccess as I mentioned in my prev post every request for a file with the word sitemap will be redirected to /forum/vbseo_sitemap/ folder where the file is actually located and therefore google or Yahoo would not have any problems getting the file. no need to put the file in the root.

Your site homeurl has not been declared if this is the case I believe. I would have to test it out to be sure, but the call for the url prefix comes from $vboptions['homeurl']. check to see that the home url (http://www.yoursite.com) is declared in your options panel in the admincp. If it is I'll look a little deeper into that issue.

Google supports gzip compression for sitemaps, what exactly is the error you get?
CP,
It could be that the error is really because you are submitting /forums/sitemap_index.xml.gz, when it is supposed to be www.domain.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz (has to be at he top level - the .htaccess file makes the file appear to be in root.)

i kept getting a 404 error when trying to submit it to google, after having moved it to my top level domain.
I had to remove the line from my htaccess file in order for it to stop giving me the 404 error.
Once i removed that line it worked fine.
could someone explain to me what that line was since i know nothing of htaccess files and regex.
Please read my post 2 above yours.. it is explained there. :)

The .htaccess file that you are required to place in /root/ is what 'tricks' google into thinking that the files ARE located in the root, where they HAVE to be for Google Sitemaps.

Yes, this modification is fully 3.6.x compatible.
No, you don't need to be running vBSEO for it to work.
Running vBSEO extends this modification by allowing you to track Search Engine bot visits.

You can definitely confirm it is functioning just by looking at the files it creates. Whether it is "working" by getting your site better indexed by the search engines, that's open for some debate, but by and large it helps a great deal.
I am noticing that its effectiveness seems to have waned in the past few months. When I first installed this, Google would send dozens of searchbots to my site each day to crawl the latest additions to the sitemap. I'd have a top 5 hit on google for any specific text in a thread title within a day or two of the original posting on my site.
But lately, even though Google downloads the new sitemap at least once per day (can check that in the logs and also by logging in to your webmaster account at Google), by also looking at the Track Guests mod I can see that it only sends 1 or 2 searchbots to my site per day (other than the adsense bots), and the new pages aren't getting indexed nearly as quickly. In fact, Yahoo is now sending dozens (sometimes hundreds) of bots to my site based on their grabbing that same sitemap, and it also appears that more of my visitors are now coming to me via Yahoo search than Google. I still think this is a great tool, but I wish Google used the files with the same vigor that they used to.

My experience is the same. I use the full-price VBSEO package and a few months after installation I had 200,000 pages indexed on Google. Now, after they changed their system I dropped to only 60,000 or so pages listed. Page ranking dropped from 6/10 to 4/10 too.

01-22-2007, 07:49 PM
I bought the 'full' VBSEO package but decided not to install it. My biggest worry was how to change back if I decided, for whatever reason, to remove it. I'm told it can be set up so that taking it out won't be a problem. Last year I grossed almost US$70K from my main site (which I consider small, but it's a good 'niche' technical web site) so the cost wasn't a factor at all. Most of the feedback I found when I perused many 'web master' forums researching was that for a mature site it isn't of much, if any, 'help'.
If I was setting up a new forum I'd use it, probably. But the bottom line is VBSEO isn't a 'magic bullet' any more than a site map is. Content, inbound non-reciprocal links, and length of time online are the major factors IMHO. Even page rank is of little significance these days. I also think Google now understands the url name issue and is placing less weight on the url name.
As to the number of pages indexed, I don't believe that's all that important. What is important is visitor statistics. As long as I see an increase in visitors most months I'm a happy camper.
EDIT ADD: As a disclaimer, I haven't installed this mod/hack. I did 'subscribe' to this thread to monitor it. Like VBSEO, I think site maps are vastly over rated. Content, inbound non-reciprocal links (but not from link farms or 'reciprocal', or related, agreements {such as 'post for post' or 'link for link' exchanges}), and length of time online rule!

Yahoo says that to submit a url list your file must be named "urllist.txt" or "urllist.txt.gz"
Just thought I'd share it with everyone.
EDIT #1: IOJAM -->
Thnx. I've done all that was listed in post #1354 (I know that number off by heart now!!! lol). I haven't got a clue if it all works as supposed, just that the files ARE being created and contain some stuff. If the BOTS don't like what's in my sitemaps, then bugger them.! I can only try, eh!?
EDIT #2: Google Sitemaps Error-->
Google Sitemaps said that my URL didn't exist, and after a while I realised that I hadn't stuck the .htaccess file in the right place... don't know about other ppl, but I had to stick the .htaccess file in the very root of my domain (the bit where no one gets a look in, unless you're admin).
EDIT #3: Google Sitemaps Error (part 2)-->
Carrying on from Edit #2, google decided that something was still wrong with the sitemap_index.xml.gz file. Google doesn't like what's written in this file, so I've pointed Google to the sitemap_1.xml.gz file instead.. no problems there.! But, the bigger problem was then with the sitemap_1.xml.gz file, that the vBAdvanced index page wasn't listed correctly in the xml file. To fix this, I had to nip into the vBAdvanced CMPS control panel in the VB ADMIN page, and in the MODULE SETTINGS under CMPS URL --> I had to write the FULL address of where the CMPS index is located. This has resolved all problems now. It's all funky and groovy, and is working like a dream.
Great work ,but I want to know if it's free to use or not?

Does one usually need to restart apache for it to read the .htaccess file? I've triple-checked things, (using cloudrunner's guide with VBA and /forum directory), and Google still gives me a 404...
If I try to access sitemap.txt.gz directly (www.mysite.com/sitemap.txt.gz) it also gives me a 404. The .htaccess is uploaded exactly as provided in the mod, to my www root. I've confirmed mod_rewrite is installed.
FIXED: I needed to have "AllowOverride All" added to the directory directive, in my virtualhost container in httpd.conf, to instruct it to consider .htaccess files.

kontrabass

Just a clarification the filename *should* be sitemap_index.xml.gz
The reason is that if you set your URL amount to split at say 20,000 links (default option) then you will have up to three files, sitemap_1.xml.gz, sitemap_2.xml.gz and sitemap_3.xml.gz if you have more than 20,000 URLs in your sitemap up to a total of the 50,000 URLs allowed by Google.
The sitemap_index.xml.gz tells google where to find the rest of the files after the split has occured. As well, even if you only have one file, it will still point google to the correct file location.
It also appears that if no modifications are made except to the .htaccess as you have instructed, the sitemap_index.xml.gz file will point to the child maps incorrectly (uses /forum/sitemap_1.xml.gz instead of siteroot/sitemap_1.xml.gz)

I cannot hardcode this line with the explicit address everytime the sitemaps are created, and seems a bit pointless to do this if the sitemaps mod automates the process, anyway.

It's my understanding that Yahoo now accepts the same Sitemaps XML feed as Google. Does anyone know if that means Yahoo will utilize the same exact "../sitemap_index.xml.gz" file as an index to drill down to the other XML sitemap files, or do I need to submit those as well?
Soon after submitting that file to Yahoo I was crawled, so now I just need to see if they will accept this.

lighttpd has its own rewrite rules format.
Please try the following:
url.rewrite-once = ( "^/(sitemap.*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)" => "/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1" )
Please note that rewrite rules should be added to lighttpd.conf (Lighttpd configuration file).
Should i mod the rewrite rule you typed like this?
url.rewrite-once = ( "^/(sitemap.*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)" => "myfullserverpath/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1" )
I have tried to leave it the way you typed and changed it to the full serverpath i neither works. Do i need to restart or reload the .conf file or is it updated live by lighttpd?

It's only in the Sitemap_Index file that the location of the Sitemap_1 file isn't explicitly listed. The rest of the links are listed in the Sitemap_1 file with complete addresses (ie, http://www.myplace.co.uk/forum/whateverfile....), but in the Index file the address is only listed as "/sitemap_1.xml.gz" (ie, without the http://www.myplace.co.uk/ part of the address) - google can't find this Sitemap_1.xml.gz by looking at my Sitemap_index.xml.gz file.

OK i have this installed and i think working. I entered the control panel of it http://mysite/forums/vbseo_sitemap/
And clicked the run sitemap generator. All is well, it creates 3 files called -
Index File sitemap_index.xml.gz
Sitemap File #1 sitemap_1.xml.gz (7,423 URLs, 40.88Kb) 1,436.77Kb uncompressed
Text Format File sitemap.txt.gz (27.81Kb)
And i can access both sitemap_1.xml.gz and sitemap_index.xml.gz by going to http://mysite/forums/sitemap_index.xml.gz or http://mysite/forums/sitemap_1.xml.gz
So i've submitted http://mysite/forums/sitemap_index.xml.gz in my google sitemaps interface (i've turned the option of to automatically notify google) and assume everything is ready to go.
However i cannot get the sitemap.txt.gz redirect to work at all. I've tried http://mysite/forums/sitemap.txt.gz and http://mysite/forums/sitemap.txt and neither will show, forcing a 404 and a redirect (cos i trap 404's). However the sitemap.txt.gz IS in the data directory, so currently i can't submit to yahoo.
Heres my .htaccess and this is installed in my forum root
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(sitemap.*\.(xml\.gz|txt))$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
Any suggestions ?

02-10-2007, 07:22 PM
for our install of the cmps addon I had to set:
$vba_url = 'http://oursite.com';
Since our cmps lives at the top level and our forums live in a subdirectory at
http://oursite.com/forums/
Also, since the forums live in a subdirectory, our rerwrite at the top level had to look like:
RewriteRule ^(sitemap.*\.(xml\.gz|txt))$ forums/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
RewriteRule ^(forums/sitemap.*\.(xml\.gz|txt))$ forums/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
The sitemap_index generates xml with submap urls that include /forums/ so we had to account for that with second line.

shaynehammy
02-14-2007, 07:34 AM
I did exactly as you said. I'm just a little confused as to how the gz files move from vbseo_sitemap/data to vbseo_sitemap/ Do we manually have to move them ourselves?
Edit. Another question. Getting this error from Google
General HTTP error: 404 not found
We encountered an error while trying to access your Sitemap. Please ensure your Sitemap follows our guidelines and can be accessed at the location you provided and then resubmit.
Trying to add the sitemap http://www.thechiefbaboon.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz
I definitely added my top domain to google as my forum is installed under /forums. I edited .htacess to include "forums" in it as you said above. Anyone any ideas please?

I have had the same problem.. Is there any way to have this submit these maps to the root instead of the data directory??
Actually i do get something pointing my browser at
http://mysite/forums/sitemap.txt
I get Sitemap file not found printed on screen. Ironically, as i say, the sitemap.txt.gz is in the data directory. So whats that all about ?
I did exactly as you said. I'm just a little confused as to how the gz files move from vbseo_sitemap/data to vbseo_sitemap/ Do we manually have to move them ourselves?
Although files are stored in vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder, they are accessed as http://youforumsroot/sitemap_index.xml.gz using mod_rewrite rules.
Make sure that you uploaded .htaccess file and your server supports mod_rewrite.

Hello, I don't have vBSEO but I installed another hack that makes my URLs like thread123.html
Is it possible for me to modify code or settings to adjust URLs like that?
****
Edit: I just found it. Changing vbseo_sitemap_functions just worked!

I have everything as you have it in your instructions and on accessing mysite/sitemap_index.xml.gz i see the google sitemap xml displayed (my forums are in a subforum of forums/ ).
However as expressed before, doing the same with mysite//sitemap.txt gets a Sitemap file not found message printed yet i can access the sitemap.txt.gz at mysite/forums/vbseo_sitemap/data/

I updated my PHP server to the newest version 5.2.1 several days ago, and the mod stopped working. When I run the task it just displays blank pages.
I've tried re-upload all the php files, but it doesn't help.
What can I do? Please do me a favor.

After searching thru this whole entire thread I could not find the RIGHT information to submit the information to YAHOO you must include the .gz
http://www.YOURSITEURL/sitemap.txt.gz
Great hack runs awesome with 3.6.4 very easy to install

vbSEO itself does a ton of other things, the most obvious being the URL rewriting. The sitemap is a free add-on which just handles sitemap generation.
Go to their website for more info...

I'm running php 4.x.x, and my server does support mod re-write. I have VB 3.6.4
I also tried all 3 .htaccess templates listed in this thread too, quad's worked.
Below is the htaccess file I currently have loaded in my public html, and I used quadinfotech's suggestions, which worked!
I uploaded: http://www.mysite.com/sitemap_1.xml.gz to http://www.mysite.com

I'm having some issues with vbseo sitemap. i've installed the plugin in my admincp, protected it with a password since i want to run it manually but when I run the vbseo_sitemap.php , it does create a sitemap but here's what I got
[homepage] [2,373.8Kb mem used] [0s (+0)]
[SECTION START] forumdisplay [2,373.8Kb mem used] [0s (+0)]
[forumdisplay] forum_id: 1, total threads: 0, pages: 1 [2,373.9Kb mem used] [0s (+0)]
[forumdisplay] forum_id: 2, total threads: 0, pages: 1 [2,373.9Kb mem used] [0s (+0)]
any more lines.
the ideea is: in forum_id:1 , I have threads, not 0 , because it's not an empty forum. what made vbseo_sitemap to think the forum is empty ?

Ugh, I just realized it's not automatically submitting for yahoo now :(
I had to play with the sitemap about 7 times to get it to finally work for google, and through my trial and error I got it to work for yahoo once, but don't remember what I did.
Based on the above information in my previous post, why would this not be working for yahoo, but working fine for yahoo?
I have all my information in the AdminCP settings correct I think, with the only thing I want to double check on is my Sitemap Files URL which I have listed as :
./forums/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_sitemap.php
I've also attached my VBSEO Sitemap report showing it once worked for yahoo, but now doesn't. For some reason I think the only time I got it to work for Yahoo was when the .htaccess file was in the forums folder...but I don't remember now :(
Any help would be appreciated.

the moment I FTP the .htaccess file, the entire /forums directory fails with an IIS error. is there anyway at all to get this thing to work without needing the .htaccess file, or is there a workaround? Isn't .htaccess a unix thing? My website is hosted in IIS on Win 2003.

IIS doesn't support .htaccess files. You'll need ISAPI_Rewrite to handle the rewrite rules.

Yes. If you're not on a dedicated server, you will have to contact your host.

Google allows up to 50,000 URLs per file.
vBSEO Sitemap will create multiple files if you have more URLs than the number you have set as your limit. That's why you submit the sitemap_index.xml.gz to Google, since that index will list any/all sitemaps that you have created.

Hello!
I am a big vbseo fan. I just installed vbseo with mucho help from their team.
As for this sitemap thing...
I have installed it, and I think this works. But since I use IIS, the .htaccess files don't exactly work. Do they?
Can somebody confirm that it is working for me? http://www.snitchseeker.com/vbseo_sitemap/index.php
Or are there special instructions for Windows users with IIS?
Also, I understand there is a newer version. It looks much more complicated to install with some includes files etc. What is new?
Thanks!

You should set up a password for your sitemap interface immediately. You don't want anyone to be able to access that.
You also need to upgrade to 1.7 (available for download on vbseo.com) as Oleg mentioned, since the old version won't work correctly with vBSEO. To upgrade, you just need to upload the new files and install the updated Product file. Not sure what you mean by include files/etc... It's an easy process.

Hi again,
Anyone successful with this --> clicky click (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1172185&postcount=1429)<--
Basically, the domain name isn't being written in the INDEX XML file that points to the Sitemap1 file, but the filename is being written... (e.g. /sitemap_1.xml.gz (or, whatever it is))
The problem will be eventually when there are more than 50'000 whatevers in the XML file... that's it, it won't work past that.
Any help WILL be greatly received.
Thanks

StepOnFrog,
you can modify your vbseo_sitemap_functions.php file, find:
'url'=>$vbseo_vars['bburl'] . '/' .$sm_filename,
replace with:
'url'=>'http://www.domain.com/' .$sm_filename,
KrisP,
you should manually add it to your webmaster account.

you should add "http://yourforumsroot/" as a new site in webmaster account and then submit "http://yourforumsroot/sitemap_index.xml.gz" to it.
gzip compression is supported by google.

OK, thanks - but I can see its not already in the root so I have to copy it manually from the data library - wouldn't it be easier if the scheduled task just placed it in the root automatically each time its updated? I have to move it from the data library to the root each time its updated right ?
Hi KrisP,
It's not really IN the root.. the .htaccess makes anyone visiting it SEE it as being in the root.

I changed web hotel and now I get Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /index.php on this server.
To give an example I found out that changing
ErrorDocument 404 /index.php
to
ErrorDocument 404 http://www.mydomain.dk/index.php
solved the problem for that line, but
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(sitemap.*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
is still causing the forbidden error
changing to
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(sitemap.*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ http://www.mydomain.dk/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
doesnt help - so what does the "full path version" of the rewrite look like ?

Hello,
Im Newbie so be gentle with me :)
I have a VB site located under my html site (linked via a menu)
Example
http://www.mysite.com
http://www.mysite.com/forum
Im using GSiteCrawler to generate a sitemap for my html and this excellent mod for my VB site
I have a couple of questions that you may be able to help me with.
The VBSEO SiteMap is in effect located here http://www.mysite.com/forum
The other sitemap is here http://www.mysite.com
For better SE results am I best combining the two of them?
I ask as I can only submit one sitemap using the Google Webmaster Tools
Many Thanks

I removed // from this line:
