Yes, if one is included in the zip file then that one should do the trick.

Hi,

as i have written: When vBSEO Installed is off, it runs very well.
Runtime: 18.94 s

When i switch vBSEO Installed on, the vbseo_sitemap.php Page is loading m immediately until [SECTION START] showthread [2,423.1Kb mem used] [0s (+0)].

The Browser says "ready" and nothing happen, also when i wait for a while.

Since installing this I can't see what people are viewing in the who's online. It now just says viewing thread or viewing forum. How can I change this? Also, where is chmod and how do you edit it as I have no idea what it is
"vBSEO Google/Yahoo Sitemap Generator for vBulletin 3.5.x & vBulletin 3.0.x" has no onpage hooks at all and can't affect how you forums forntend is functioning. :)

CHMOD operation can be done using the most of FTP client software.

P.S Also, does this interfere with vBranking as I also have that installed. Thanks
It supports only the original vB dynamic URLs and the URLs created by vBSEO.

Task is setup to run at 2am, now I understand that it will run after the first visit after 2am, however, this morning it ran at 2:17am and 3:33am. Why would it run twice?

Perhaps you have two vB tasks configured OR someone executed the sitemap generation *manually*?

how I will know that it works?

Explanation in details :)
1. Open your "vbseo_sitemap/" page
2. Create the sitemap files using "Run Sitemap Generator" link
3. At the "Show Reports List" check details and the sitemap generation process
4. Ensure that "Google Notify" column shows "Yes"
5. Try downloading http://yourdomain.com/forums/sitemap_1.xml.gz file to ensure is accessable for googlebot.

Try to access the sitemap URL with your browser. If it opens successfully, your host might have had issues when googlebot attempted to download the sitemap.

iojam thank you for this great work..
I was wondering some of things about this hack..

My site stats as follows,
VB:3.5.1 Threads: 82,388, Posts: 1,320,020, Members: 139,435
Google PR: 5
Indexed Pages in Google: 500.000 (not included members)
(Once we update to vb 3.5, google has become more friendly)

If I install this hack,
Is it going to increase server load?
Estimatedly, how many pages would this help to be cached daily?
After this, are robots just going to visit the site maps?
Is it going to help earnng outbound links?

If the qestions so silly, please excuse me for my limited seo knowledge..

iojam

turkforum,

googlebot downloads your sitemap file(s) shortly after the submission. As for crawling/indexing of the pages included into sitemap, Google doesn't guarantee this (and of course we don't either ;) ).
From Google Sitemaps FAQ (http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/docs/en/faq.html):
Will Google crawl and index all of the URLs in my Sitemap?

We don't guarantee that we'll crawl or index all of your URLs. However, we use the data in your Sitemap to learn about your site's structure, which will allow us to improve our crawler schedule and do a better job crawling your site in the future. In most cases, webmasters will benefit from Sitemap submission, and in no case will you be penalized for it.

Are we talking about two different things? A vbseo Google sitemap, and vbseo rewrites.

A Google sitemap certainly helps Google to find your threads, and so can decrease your server load, as you are directing Google to visit specific pages more or less often. The sitemap is generated as often as you request it - either by cron, scheduled tasks or manually. There is only server load created at that instant.

(Once we update to vb 3.5, google has become more friendly) - yes, vb3.5 included many seo orientated changes, a lot of which were at my instigation. But vbulletin didnt finish the job. vbseo rewrites plus some onpage optimization, plus getting suffucient links - gives what I consider a completed seo of a forum.

Is it going to increase server load? -vbseo rewrites does increase server load, and on some servers and large forums this has been an issue. But with large forums some rewrites can be turned off, and tweaks made to get load to acceptable levels.

Estimatedly, how many pages would this help to be cached daily? - never any gaurantees about anything. But when you have clean url's, no duplicates, etc at least Google/yahoo are given the opportunity to find url's easier.

After this, are robots just going to visit the site maps? Google uses the sitemaps as a url list to then visit the actual url's. It also spiders url's that are not on the sitemaps, url's that it finds via normal spidering around the web.

Is it going to help earnng outbound links? - if your pages are able to be found on Google/Yahoo, then you are more likely to get people linking to you. So sitemaps will help pages get cached faster, and if they are seo'ed well etc then they should rank well...

Now, it is yet to be seen how it helps the forum. How can we measure the results and see if the sitemap is really working?

iojam
11-21-2005, 07:40 AM
caliman,

it is ready in a new vBSEO Sitemap Generator v1.3 :)
# 11/21/2005 - Version 1.3 Released
(1) FIX: Authentication issue on .../vbseo_sitemap/index.php when forums are closed.
(2) UPDATE: "Spider Activity Log in your Forums" report added. If you have our vBSEO (2.2.1 or greater) Plugin installed, this feature will allow you to log spider activity on your forum. Then it can be automatically displayed within your Sitemap reports (found at vbroot/vbseo_sitemap/ on your forum once you install).

as explained in https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=819674&postcount=160 :
you could manually move the files from vbseo_sitemap/data/ to your forums root after the generation if your site doesn't support mod_rewrite.

Thank Conq.

Just to be clear, does this mean I don't need to overwrite my existing plugin with the new one? EDIT - NEVERMIND - I imported it over old 1.2 version. Just seems to be an omission. Everything works. Thanks!

Upgrade Instructions (Version 1.x to 1.3)

(1) Upload all new PHP files for version 1.3 to the vbseo_sitemap folder, overwriting the existing ones.
(2) Change the .htaccess directives to the 1.3 version provided.
(3) IF you are using the cron, update the cron command to the 1.3 version provided.

About Step 3.. I am using a scheduled task that goes to './vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_sitemap.php' -- this remains the same right?

Hope this hasnet been asked before but with this step:

C. Open your 'vbroot/.htaccess' file and enter the following code:

Code:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(sitemap.*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

Does this need to be at the top of the file or doesnt it matter?

Put it at the top and see if it works, if it doesn't, try somewhere else :) Surely it will work :)

It may depend on other rewrite rules you have in .htaccess, but in most case it will work as the first line right after "RewriteEngine on".

It is possible that your PHP configuration doesn't allow scripts to run for "long time" and interrupts them. You can still setup a system cron job for sitemap generator (as described in installation instructions).

question:

since yesterday we've found crazy URLs in our BOT Activity Log...

archive/index.php/t-%3Cwbr/f-36.html
archive/index.php/t-<wbr/f-12.html
archive/index.php/t-<wbr/f-56.html

What's the hell is this??? Other entries are okay like:

archive/index.php/f-25.html
archive/index.php/f-58.html

Where do the "<wbr" -entries come from? Any hints?

Thanks,

Couple of questions

I use vB 3.0.9 here.

I upload the folder to my forums folder and Chmod the folder called Data to 777. I opened opened up the .htaccess file in my forums folder and added the code. I then added the command to Scheduled Task manager to run every 2 hours.

I then opened up the vbseo_sm_config30x.php file and changed the number 1 to 0 in the:

// Run from vB Scheduled Tasks Manager ONLY
'vbseo_sm_crononly' => '0',

I then tested it by manually running the Task Manager and all went well. I even got an email telling me it was generated.

Here is were I'm confused. It looks like the files were generated in the data folder, not in the forum folder. Is that right?

Also, were do you get this site map code from that you have to enter in the vbseo_sm_config30x.php file. Do you have to register with Google and Yahoo to there sitemap to get the code you enter there.

Also what URL if I do, do I submit, as the files being generated are in the data folder, not the forums folder

-------------------------------
EDIT

Err, I take that back: Its here: http://www.garybolton.co.uk/vb/vbseo_sitemap/

But were do I get the code from though?

Gary Bolton,

Here is were I'm confused. It looks like the files were generated in the data folder, not in the forum folder. Is that right?
Yes. Files are physically located in "vbseo_sitemap/data/" folder, but are accesses from your forums root (using the rewriterules you added to .htaccess)
Also, were do you get this site map code from that you have to enter in the vbseo_sm_config30x.php file. Do you have to register with Google and Yahoo to there sitemap to get the code you enter there.It is not required to register at Google to use Sitemap Generator. The 'vbseo_sm_runcode' setting in vbseo_sm_config30x.php just allows you to restrict access to "vbseo_sitemap/" interface.

Also what URL if I do, do I submit, as the files being generated are in the data folder, not the forums folderThe sitemap URLs to submit link to your forums root:
yourforumsroot/sitemap_index.xml.gz
yourforumsroot/sitemap_1.xml.gz
etc

Clanshosting,

please make sure to set write permission for vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder as described in installation instructions.

Just a note...I was having that exact same problem as Clanshosting. Now...I hate to admit it but the problem was that I had not created a "data" folder in the vbseo_sitemap folder. For some of us, the instructions need to be EXACT. :) Nowhere in the install did I see where I was supposed to create a data folder.

Hi Don,

thanks for the note. There is an empty "data/" folder included in archive, but probably it was not extracted in your case.

We will put a placeholder file into this folder for the next version to ensure it is extracted in all cases.

Thanks again for reporting! :)

Working VERY WELL now and this is a great addition. I do have the problem submitting to Yahoo though. I have it set at 20,000 but still timing out. I'm trying to submit sitemap.txt.gz, is that correct?

If you uploaded the 'vbseo_sitemap' folder, the data folder was contained within it. Im guessing you created a 'vbseo_sitemap' yourself and uploaded the files, instead of just uploading the whole 'vbseo_sitemap' folder.

No...I uploaded the folder just as it extracted from the download. The data folder was not in it. I just opened the zip file that I downloaded here again just to be sure and it does not contain the data folder.

Yes, the correct file is sitemap.txt.gz (it contains ALL URLs though - 20,000 split applies to Google sitemap only).
Please try to resubmit the sitemap to Yahoo a few times - it is known that timeouts may happen there with large sitemaps.

Woah... why are my excluded forums still in the generated sitemaps? And why are showpost's and members in there when I've excluded those too?

Uninstall until my mod forums are excluded... and yes I've put in the forumId's seperated by spaces.

You must have manually ran it from the Task Scheduler. It runs under your login when you do that. When the actual task runs at night, it will run as a guest. You can manually run it from the Sitemap interface and it will only include those forums that guests can view.

As for showposts and members, as long as you turned those options off in the AdminCP settings for this plugin, they shouldn't be included.

Speaking of place holders, I'd like to see a blank index.php in each folder. I added mine by hand.

Yup, I did that :)

So I have to run it using the runcode thing? And never by pressing Run Now in the Scheduled Tasks pane?

They are turned off in the AdminCp settings, but post re-writing is still enabled in vbSEO itself. Does it use the vbSEO settings? Or the ones in the AdminCp?

Code:

RewriteRule ^(sitemap.*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

Rubal,

The workaround for you is to move all *.xml.gz files from vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder to vbroot/ (the only downside is that you will not be able to see the downloads log in this case).

Also, if your IIS server has ISAPI_Rewrite module support, you can transfer mod_rewrite rules to it.

Interesting, I suppose that Google produced the same verification filename for any webmaster account?
Although I cannot reproduce this now - perhaps Google has it fixed already.

Thanks for sharing!

Edit: Ah, or is it about server-side 404 error handling? I believe that Google has been checked this during verification a while ago already :)

If i set Include Show Post Pages to Yes to include show post pages in sitemaps (showpost.php) it creates invalid links (the threadid is missing) like these:

http://www.XXX.com/forum/showpost.php?p=&amp;postcount=1
http://www.XXX.com/forum/showpost.php?p=&amp;postcount=2
http://www.XXX.com/forum/showpost.php?p=&amp;postcount=3
etc...

does it happen to ALL showpost links or to the specific ones only?
Also, what about other links?

EvilHawk
11-29-2005, 02:08 PM
It happens to all!

I have also noticed that the archive links are like this /forum/archive/index.php:t- instead of /forum/archive/index.php/t- !

edit: The archive links are easily fixed by changing the VBSEO_SLASH_METHOD at vbseo_sitemap_functions.php ;)

I have also noticed that at the Yahoo txt version the links have the html entity &amp; instead of & like this example =forumdisplay.php?f=106&amp;page=19

* EvilHawk clicks install and votes for HotM ;)

How do you add aol.com in your list and varify it? Don't you have to upload a file to AOL.com domain and then google varifies it for you?

[Sorry if this issue has already been addressed... I tried searching this thread first for 'email' but didn't see my problem]

Is anybody else getting multiple emails when it runs? Last night I got emails at 3:19am, 3:30am, and again at 4:39am. The processing times on them are different so I know it's not the same email going out multiple times.

In my scheduled tasks it only appears once for hour 3 (no minutes).

Thoughts? :o

Thanks,

EvilHawk,

does it happen to ALL showpost links or to the specific ones only?
Also, what about other links?

I have this bug too now that I looked.

$thread_row does not contain $thread_row['postid'] it seems when passed.

In vbseo_sitemaps_functions.php find...

function vbseo_url_post($thread_row, $post_row, $postcount = 1)
{
global $vbseo_vars;

return $vbseo_vars['bburl'] . '/' .
(VBSEO_ON&&VBSEO_REWRITE_SHOWPOST ? vbseo_post_url_row($thread_row, $post_row, $postcount) :
'showpost.php?p='.$thread_row['postid'].'&amp;postcount='.$postcount);
}

Change $thread_row to $post_row

function vbseo_url_post($thread_row, $post_row, $postcount = 1)
{
global $vbseo_vars;

return $vbseo_vars['bburl'] . '/' .
(VBSEO_ON&&VBSEO_REWRITE_SHOWPOST ? vbseo_post_url_row($thread_row, $post_row, $postcount) :
'showpost.php?p='.$post_row['postid'].'&amp;postcount='.$postcount);
}

This fix is only for non-vbseo installs. I don't use vbseo so I dunno if there is more work to do or not here.

Okay...maybe I found the problem. As usual, it is probably the result of not completely reading the instructions. I had it set to run once per night but had the minutes still set to *. So...I suppose it was trying to run every minute of that hour. I'll find out tonight and maybe this will help somebody else who is having the same problem.

i have a question about it. I installed it and its looking great.

I wanted to ask some questions about it:

I created sitemap and submit it to google

First question here : For adding sitemaps to google, it requires valid google account. But the script is only pinging google. So will it also work? or must i also add my sitemap manually by using my google account.

Second question: At my forum guests can see thread titles but when they want to read its posts, it asks for login info. So must i enable showthread and showposts functions or must i disable them?

Third Question: I submitted it to google and it said downloaded 1 hour ago but at script there is a show sitemap download log and when i click it there is nothing displayed.But google says i downloaded it 1 hour ago. Why it isnt displaying?

Fourth Question: I opened sitemap_index.xml.gz file and its written in it like :

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
- <sitemapindex xmlns="http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap/0.84" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap/0.84 http://http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap/0.84/siteindex.xsd">

<sitemap>http://www.example.com/forum/sitemap_4.xml.gz</sitemap>
</sitemapindex>

but there is no sitemap under forum. the sitemaps are in forum/vbseo_sitemap/data folder.

fifth and last question : Google give an error llike :

http://www.example.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9821&page=2 URL not under Sitemap path
http://www.example.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9856 URL not under Sitemap path
http://www.example.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9963 URL not under Sitemap path

When i click the link for more info there is written like :

https://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/docs/en/protocol.html#sitemapLocation

its long but you can find it at that link shortly its meaning:

Sitemaps cant contain files at different locations from sitemap file.

So why is google giving url not under sitemap path error?

my forum is under example.com/forum

and sitemap folder is example.com/forum/vbseo_sitemaps/data

bonjurkes,
First question here : For adding sitemaps to google, it requires valid google account. But the script is only pinging google. So will it also work? or must i also add my sitemap manually by using my google account.

The google webmaster account submission is optional (although still a good idea to track sitemap status)

Second question: At my forum guests can see threads but when they want to read its content, it asks for login info. So must i enable showthread and showposts functions or must i disable them?You should definitely consider to allow showthread content reading for the guests (and so for SE bots), otherwise there is not so much to index at your site for search engines.

Third Question: I submitted it to google and it said downloaded 1 hour ago but at script there is a show sitemap download log and when i click it there is nothing displayed.But google says i downloaded it 1 hour ago. Why it isnt displaying?
I suppose you've submitted the sitemap files as forumsroot/vbseo_sitemap/data/sitemap_X.xml.gz, while the correct URL is forumsroot/sitemap_X.xml.gz.

yes i submit it like forumsroot/vbseo_sitemap/data/sitemap_X.xml.gz

bcs the script is creating sitemap files in data folder not in forumsroot

While google xml sitemap protocol requires to urlencode the parameters, the text sitemap has no this requirement.

Same here. I get several emails. With it set on 20000 URLs...does it break it down and submit several in 20000 URL blocks or just once?

DonDon, make sure your minutes are explicitly set to "0" (or some other number).... I didn't realize that the minutes defaulted to "*" instead of "0" so when I created my task and set the hour to "3" I didn't change the minutes. Whoops. :o

Very dumb question I am sure but:

Is the sitemap supposed to look like this?

Loco Macheen,

Please make sure that you have no '*' for hours/minutes in the vB scheduler for the Sitemap Generator task.

If you disabled the product in the admincp, but left the vB scheduler task in place, it will continue to work.

Don,

that's right, having '*' means to run EVERY minute. It should be set to 0 (or whatever specific value :) ).
ooh.. i think this was my issue..

Just installed, and everything seemed to go without a hitch. Created first sitemap via scheduled task manager, the files showed up correctly, and when I look at the reports everything looks fine; it appears that it submitted the ping to google to come grab it.

But I then went in and looked at the xml files themselves, and there are hundreds, if not thousands, of broken links that are created in the sitemap. Many of them are of the Showpost variety, but the archive ones don't seem to work either. Here's an example of one of the listings:

<url>
<loc>http://www.MYFORUMS.com/forums/showpost.php?p=&amp;postcount=3</loc>
<priority>0.3</priority>
<lastmod>2005-12-10T04:25:27+00:00</lastmod>
<changefreq>yearly</changefreq>
</url>

It just has the "&amp;" after the p, not the actual post number. There are hundreds of these, repeats, with postcounts starting over at 1.

The showthread links look fine; when I copy them from the XML file and post them in a browser they work great.

All of the archive links appear to be futzed up. Here is what they look like:

http://www.MYFORUMS.com/forums/archive/index.php:t-5381.html

None of them work when pasted into a browser. I'm going to disable showpost, archive, and re-run sitemap, but am I doing something wrong or is there a bug?

I'm running version 3.5.2, and I don't have vBSEO installed.

Worked fine with Google BUT for Yahoo created a file of over 110MB now when I upload this file to yahoo it gives me timeout. Any solution ?

Totti,

well ... i doubt 110MB, here it Text Format File sitemap.txt.gz (832.49Kb)Earlier version of Sitemap Generator has generated plain text file (that's why it was so large), current one supports gzip compression to reduce file size.

but same with the timeout ... any solution found, yet?Please try to resubmit the sitemap several times - it happened to me to get timeouts for big sitemaps, but at the 5th try (or so) it has been successful.

no way ... tried it 20 times ... :D

But how come the path in the overview points to vb root while the genrated file are in the root/vbseo_sitemap/data dir, which is forbidden for yahoo anyway?

p.s.: i removed all but a thousand lines from the txt and uploaded it as txt ... yahoo still didn't want it :D

It works because "root sitemap URLs" are rewritten with mod_rewrite directives in .htaccess. :)

p.s.: i removed all but a thousand lines from the txt and uploaded it as txt ... yahoo still didn't want it You should try to pack it back to gzip after removing the part, because plain text sitemap are WAY bigger and you will get timeouts for them.

Am confused about the new feature "Addons". Can someone elaborate what files we put there? Also, what are addons? Are plugins and extensions addons?

iojam
12-12-2005, 12:30 AM
By "addons" we mean here a separate files that can be uploaded to your vbseo_sitemap/addons/ folder to add links to non-vB pages into sitemap (like pages created by vB hacks).

An example addon (for basic vbadvanced pages) is included with Sitemap Generator v1.5.

aacircle
12-12-2005, 12:37 AM
So I could add 1 text file that contains all my other non vb urls?

iojam
12-12-2005, 12:43 AM
The "additional URLs in text file" option was available in early versions of Sitemap Generator (you could simply manually put the links into vbseo_sitemap/extra-urls.txt file for that).
But the new "addons" feature allows to generate non-vB URLs dynamically when sitemap is created.

Here is the difference :)

aacircle
12-12-2005, 12:52 AM
Thanks for your reply iojam.

Hmm... interesting. But not sure how to dynamically add non-vb urls. Is there a module or some addon that is required that then picks up all non-vb urls? Or is it now all built-in into the package.

iojam
12-12-2005, 01:02 AM
Nope, this feature allows YOU to create the code that will be executed during sitemap generation to add non-vB URLs into sitemap.

It is useful to create addons "per vB mod" and it is also assumed that these Sitemap Generator "addon" modules can be shared between users. Does it make sense? :)

If you have the sitemap generator for non-vb urls you can still use the simultaniously with vBSEO Google/Yahoo Sitemap Generator - they will just supplement each other.
If you prefer to create own addon for vBSEO Sitemap Generator, you can use addons/vbseo_sm_vba.php file as an example on how to do it.

Hope this email doesn't cause you too much stress...

You can try to open the sitemap files in the browser to check if they are accessed correctly.

Also you have to submit sitemap.txt.gz to Yahoo manually.

I'd hate to throw a wet blanket on this party. But considering that up till now the sitemaps have been of no use with all the bad URLs if ShowPost was included, should this be in beta till we get all the bugs worked out?

Alot of people are putting their seo eggs in this basket and so far ALOT of us have all sent bad site maps to google. I'm not happy about that to be honest.

And what about the yahoo! URLs? My research says use URL encoding. Other research says no encoding. What is the authority on this change?

This is not an add on where you say oh so what, the user just sees a non bold text where there should be bold, we'll fix it soon. These are things that should have been 100% from the get go!

Thank god the code aint encoded, because the few bugs I have fixed in advance myself would never have been addressable.

Are we at production level here now or what? I don't like the idea that an SEO expert is playing with my sitemaps to learn!

dagger77,

the vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder should NOT be accessed directly. All sitemap files are downloaded using forumsroot/ path (it works using mod_rewrite rules in .htaccess). That was discussed several times in this thread :) , for instance
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=845857&postcount=394

kall,

Quick question: Should it be submitting for http://www.nzboards.com/ or http://www.nzboards.com/forums ?

In case when sitemap contains only forums URLs, it's fine to keep it in forums/ subfolder.

But if you will include non-vB URLs linking to the root (using "extra-urls.txt" or addons), then sitemap files should reside in the root.

I'm not looking for a pissing match here, so don't stir the pot.

If you are so good with your eyes, next time look for some of the bugs to be fixed before having a bunch of us submit broken sitemap files.

I have chipped in and helped with this hacks bugs and I'm glad I did. But don't give me a broken toy and tell me an expert made it when as a meer amature I have to find and fix bugs. When you call yourself and "expert" you have to wear the lable and perform like one.

I'm asking a legitimate question. Is this expert coded work done or not? I say not and I'd like to see it fixed in a more timely manner in the future. This is a very serious part of a websites existance one is playing with here. It's not to be taken lightly. Worse it raises the question of the quality of the closed code in other products.

I'm trying to look out for the vBSEO coders here, not insult them. But I WILL call them to the mat on quality and timelyness since they are experts and should know the drill.

@noppid:

Unfortunately, we completed a fix but it was not uploaded to the site in a timely fashion. The bug in the showpost URLs has been corrected. FYI This issue results in having a small number of showpost links repeated multiple times, which is not a big problem and is similar to having "showpost" pages disabled.

Note: The code is now updated here with the bug fix.

We are at production level. However, bugs are a fact of life in the software development lifecycle. As in the past, we will continue to do our best to provide fast upgrades whenever an issue (large or small) is identified.

Thank-you for being the first to alert us to this issue.

As for Yahoo sitemaps, we have not found any documentation indicating that the URLs need to be URL encoded. However, Yahoo just updated its sitemap format (http://submit.search.yahoo.com/free/request/). They accept either RSS or single URL submissions. So, we are now working on upgrading the plugin.

Unfortunately, we completed a fix but it was not uploaded to the site in a timely fashion. The bug in the showpost URLs has been corrected. I totally disagree with your assessment of the number of URLs affected. It was not a few, it was ALL vB showpost URLs. But it's fixed, water under the bridge.

You're doing good. But you have a bigger responsibility here then the average hacker. It's great to see the code up to date. Asking this to happen faster and more accuartly may seem like being a pain in the A**, but it's necessary that we be dilligent when we hack what will affect folks in the SERPs.

Thanks for the reply and a great hack. I'm glad to see you taking this critisism professionally.

Ryan,
403 Forbidden Error when I submit to Yahoo.

Please make sure that you have the correct mod_rewrite rule entered in .htaccess (it was slightly changed in one of previous versions).

You will see every sitemap download request in your vbseo_sitemap/ interface (both Google and Yahoo downloads).

Everything installed ok but yahoo and google cant find the sitemaps.....They are there in the data folder....How do i know my .htaccess is redirecting them properly?See here http://www.toonsunited.com/vb/vbseo_sitemap but when i look there has been no downloads of the files.I logged into google and submitted the sitemap manually, and it reported google tried to download the site map but gave the Error that it couldnt be found!

theodonnells,

it seems that .htaccess rewrite rule doesn't work correctly at your host. You can check that by entering the sitemap URL in browser:
http://www.toonsunited.com/vb/sitemap_index.xml.gz

Please make sure that .htaccess entry is inserted correctly in /vb/.htaccess and mod_rewrite is supported by your server.
Also try to add the following directive in .htaccess before the RewriteRule line (which is required in some configurations):
RewriteBase /vb/

Hi!

Thanks for making this available. I appreciate your work. :)

Ive got one question, though... does google still take advantage of the sitemaps this mod creates even though theyre buried under a few subdirectories?

I read this at Google, which got me a little concerned:

The location of a Sitemap file determines the set of URLs that can be included in that Sitemap. A Sitemap file located at http://example.com/catalog/sitemap.gz can include any URLs starting with http://example.com/catalog/ but can not include URLs starting with http://example.com/images/.

If you have the permission to change http://example.org/path/sitemap.gz, it is safe to assume that you also have permission to provide information for URLs with the prefix http://example.org/path/. Examples of URLs considered valid in http://example.com/catalog/sitemap.gz include:

http://example.com/catalog/show?item=23
http://example.com/catalog/show?item=233&user=3453

URLs not considered valid in http://example.com/catalog/sitemap.gz include:

http://example.com/image/show?item=23
http://example.com/image/show?item=233&user=3453
https://example.com/catalog/page1.html

URLs that are not considered valid are dropped from further consideration. It is strongly recommended that you place your Sitemap at the root directory of your web server. For example, if your web server is at example.com, then your Sitemap index file would be at http://example.com/sitemap.gz. In certain cases, you may need to produce different Sitemaps for different paths e.g. if security permissions in your organization compartmentalize write access to different directories.

So if this mod is generating sitemaps in example.com/forum/vbseo/data/, does Google still consider URL's in the sitemaps for higher directories valid?

Sorry if im missing something simple. :ninja:

iojam

Julian,

lighttpd has its own rewrite rules format.
Please try the following:

url.rewrite-once = ( "^/(sitemap.*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)" => "/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1" )

Please note that rewrite rules should be added to lighttpd.conf (Lighttpd configuration file).

Can anyone point me to the fix for the Yahoo Forbidden error? This is a long thread and I can't find the fix with a search. Thank you...
I'd need more details on the error:

- If you mean "Yahoo timeouts", you'll probably need to try it several times until it is submitted successfully
- If Yahoo reports they're unable to download the sitemap because of a "Forbidden error", you should check the rewrite rules in .htaccess and try accesing the sitemap file using the browser to check if it works correctly.

Btw, I just submitted your Yahoo sitemap (http://www.80sxchange.com/forums/sitemap.txt.gz) without errors. :)

what's the difference between this one and the $150 one form their site?

This is (as the name suggests) a Sitemap generator.

'The $150 one on their site' is vBSEO, the vBulletin Search Engine Optimisation product.

Taking a leaf from another poster's book, I will now paste my thoughts about it.

vBSEO can rewrite ALL of the dynamic urls on your forum. Custom rewrite rules give me the ability to choose whether to call payments.php "purchase.html", "/products/", or "purplemonkeydonut.htm" if I want...all through an easy to manage Control Panel.

It also cleans up html, removing comment code and whitespace, and along with the automatic 'add image dimension attributes' to all images, makes your pages load faster.

The addition of rel="nofollow" to the URLS that you choose, plus the 'force forumroot as homepage' (makes www.site.com/forums/index.php become www.site.com/forums/) allows you to filter PageRank towards the more imortant parts of your site and avoid "pagerank leakage".

ukbill69,

vBSEO Google/Yahoo Sitemap Generator does not have the sql code you posted and it has no database modification code in the xml installer. It also never refers to attachments and has no "forums/" defaults.

I suppose this cannot be related to the sitemap generator and suggest you to check other mods/changes to find the reason of problem.

the urls you should submit to Google are:
http://www.world-trance.com/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz
http://www.world-trance.com/forum/sitemap_1.xml.gz

These files are located in vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder and are working from forumsroot/ because you've added the mod_rewrite rule to .htaccess. This is the most frequently asked question in this thread. :)

The permissions requirement can be met by either allowing write access to "everyone" (chmod 0777 for data/ folder) or to assign the owner attribute to the one used to run php scripts.

You set the limit in the AdminCP options that are created by this product. It defaults to limiting to 50,000 per file.

It is really a good idea to upgrade PHP on your server as there was many improvements and fixes implemented since 4.2.0.

there is no specific timeframe defined by Google for this, but you may manually add all individual sitemap file URLs to your Google Webmaster Account (http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/siteoverview) to speed it up - they will be downloaded immediately in this case.

I installed this today and it created the xml files just fine but I have it set to build txt files for Yahoo also, but it's not making them - any ideas?

Nevermind, I'm an idiot - I went in and checked that that file in fact did not exist. I accidentally used the new product file with the older other files. DOH. Thanks anyway!

I time out when submitting the sitemap to Yahoo.

Should I unzip the sitemap.txt.gz file and submit it?

Also, there is 2 boxes for submission on Yahoo. The first is for a feed and the second is for a single page. Which one should I use for my sitemap submittal?

Thanks,

Hello VegasMack,

you should use compressed (sitemap.txt.gz) sitemap version and submit it to the "input feed" box on Yahoo submission page.

Please try to resubmit it multiple times - it is known that timeouts happen at Yahoo often for large sitemaps.

Hi,

just a little hint ...

I've installed it and it works well, except the rewrite ... I've tried many things and finally, after reading the whole thread,

RewriteBase /

did it for me ...

Thank you Kai,

I posted this suggestion here already (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=848013&postcount=422) but it could be easily missed within pages :)

We will include this hint into the FAQ :)

... but I have still another problem:

This ist my "*.txt.gz"-file:

http://www.portugalforum.de/sitemap.txt.gz

But this is not compressed ... it's just a text file.

Correct?

Yahoo always gives me timeouts ...

Kai,

it is compressed (but uncompressed by your browser on-the-fly), the same with xml.gz files.

As for Yahoo submission timeouts - I just submitted the sitemap URL you posted successfully :) (the suggestion is to re-submit it multiple times if you receive timeout message).

... but there must be a difference between the xml.gz-files and the txt.gz-files, because Opera (8.5 Build 7700) shows the xml-file but downloads the txt-file ...

... and I've tried to submit the file about 20 or 30 times ...

Keep trying to submit, and it will. It can take many tries.
