I can see on the horizon where the large social networking companies will charge for increased data from their API's. There is no downside for them, large companies will pay and they will get rid of all the bandwidth leechers, which are hard to monetize.

I can see it happening too. Akin to Netflix's deal with Comcast and Verizon.

The real problem now is the API rate limit that FaceBook imposed months ago. The modification could add caching, which will help, but if the user has exceeded their rate limit (via another modification) then synching will stop until the rate limit criteria is met. I can see this as a real pain to support, with users complaining that it does not work.
I am afraid many FaceBook mods might have to be home-brewed until this situation is ironed out.

Very true. Facebook's api has changed alot which is causing a lot of pain.
A 2.0 version is currently in development and will be released within the month
